Reign of Scandals Slow to End, GOPers Worry

February 09, 2007 11:48 AM

Ap_comp_rep_070209_nr House Republicans worry the long storm of congressional scandals may not be over for them, news out of Washington indicates.

Facing a federal investigation into a pair of his real estate deals, Rep. Gary Miller, R-Calif., went before a group of his fellow GOP members Wednesday to declare his innocence, according to "The Hill" newspaper, which has detailed his troubles for months.

Federal prosecutors are probing whether Miller failed to pay taxes on income from land deals.  His spokesman, Scott Toussaint, told ABC News the charges were "entirely incorrect."

"Congressman Miller is tired of all the rumor and innuendo," Toussaint said. "He spoke before the Republican conference to personally assure his colleagues that these charges are baseless and have no merit whatsoever."

Also of reported concern to Republicans is a federal investigation into Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif. The probe, an offshoot of the Randy "Duke" Cunningham scandal, was first reported last July. "The Los Angeles Times" revealed that prosecutors suspect Lewis of steering millions in taxpayer money to clients of favored lobbyists.

The congressman's office did not return a call for comment, but he has previously denied the charges.

An investigation into another serving House Republican is showing signs of renewed activity. New documents have been handed over to a grand jury in the case of Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Calif., who's facing scrutiny for misusing his influence to pump up the value of land he owned and later sold, according to California's Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

Calvert's office declined to comment today; in the past he has denied wrongdoing in the affair.

All this after the republicans were propped up by "FAUX" News and Ruperts machine, Rev.Moon and his "whitewashinton times" shill rag, radio wackos like "HUSH BIMBO", Bill "OREALLY", "SHUN" Hannity and the terrorist Michael Savage Weiner, so it has to make you wonder how deep is the slime if all these ALL-STARS have been covering for fine republicans like these?

Please remind me about the article you have written / published about the real estate deals of Senator Reid of Nevada?

Posted by: Donald H. Parnell, Sr. | Feb 9, 2007 1:16:29 PM

Yes, thank you Donald. Unfortunately, Harry Reid gets a free pass on corruption (he is a democrat if you didn't know).

Sandy Berger also gets a free pass (supported by the Clintons).

If you want unbiased and objective reporting. Go somewhere else.

I am from NV, I better than others, know how underreported Harry Greid's scandals are.

Justin! I am so glad you haven't disappeared. I'm a huge fan. So, you went over to the dark side, huh?

What's going on with the Curt Weldon investigation? No leaks from the grand jury?

I can't wait to hear more about how attractive, fortyish, blonde real estate agent-turned-lobbyist, Cecilia Grimes "lobbied" Rep. Curt Weldon.

ABC doesn't need journalistic integrity.

Their competition is Katie Couric. Hahaha!

And thats the problem with America. We bring ourselves down to our competition, instead of pressing on, keeping all ethics, moral, and integrity.

ABC has lost it. They are now MoveOn.org's 'cousin'.

It is apparent that the GOP needs some house cleaning and I expect the same of the Democrat party is true also. I am neither, but rather Independent. I lean toward conservatism so I would normally vote Republican.

I think it is hard for any politician to reach national prominence with clean hands. I personally think there are just too many back office deals on the way to Congress or the White House that need to be made with the "right" people making most any candidate compromised.

That being said, the GOP is the party that has sought to project itself as the party that takes the "so-called moral high ground". Some in the party show that to be doubtful.

As things stand right now with the possible exception of John McCain I may vote for Hillary Clinton next year. That is something that I would consider unthinkable a year ago.

The Repubs have had 6 years of investigative/subpoena/ethics committee control. If Reid is as corrupt as you claim, where are the investigations? The indictments?? Don't even bother to answer. They're probably in the same black hole vortex as the criminal convictions of Bill and Hillary Clinton for their manufactured Whitewater "crimes." Go peddle your faux outrage on some right-wing blogs where your know-nothingness will be saluted by a bunch of equally know-nothing compatriots.

haha, you're so right!! yeehaw!! wasn't 'path to 9/11' awesome!! i wish i could give you a high-5!!!

These "Republican" scandals surely won't leave the public eye with Brian Ross on the case for the Democrats. Way to go, Brian! You are a good lap dog.

As we all know, only the Republicans participate in scandalous behavior in Washington D.C. Give me a break!

These sad (and pathetic) political times remind me of that Who song "Won't get fooled again." It goes something like this (in pertinent part):

Meet the old boss, same as the old boss...

Wake up America, the age of the main-stream media has passed! There is no such thing as unbiased news. IT IS ALL SPIN...and ABC is a masterful in their spinning...it just goes round and round and round and round...

Posted by: jim jones | Feb 9, 2007 4:44:16 PM

"wasn't 'path to 9/11' awesome!!"

Yes it was, though I remember how ABC was forced to edit out several minutes of it, because it made Sandy Berger look the rat-bag bureaucrat that he is.

The Clinton's forced the Sandy Berger episodes off of the the movie. ABC Censored the movie. You may, thankfully, still see these deleted shots on youtube.

Also, there is a reason none of you have ever seen the twin towers fall on the ABC network in the last several years.

They refuse to show the towers coming down, because it gives sympathy to the war on terror.

They refuse to mention any scandal involving Sandy Berger or Harry Reid, or Harry Reid's involvement with Jack Abrahamoff (conveniently).

Balanced? Fair? Objective? Or paid?

Posted by: JelloBiafra | Feb 9, 2007 5:14:15 PM

To krazeeinjun:

Educate yourself, since ABC won't do it for you.

You call us "knownothings", yet you admit you know nothing about any Harry Reid scandals (including taking $68,000 from Jack Abrahamoff FROM INDIAN GAMING CASINOS).

You transpose your own inadequacies onto others. This is an obvious liberal issue that you can only solve for yourself.

You can ask anyone the question, "Who has taken money from Jack Abrahamoff and his associates."

Most people who read only the MSM would NEVER say Harry Reid, even though he is in the THICK of it. (and majority leader I might mention, which puts him under a microscope, welll... maybe if he was a republican...)

Thank you for playing.

Hey Jello,
How many Sandy Bergers does it take to make one Duke Cunningham?
How many Sandy Bergers does it take to make one Bob Ney?
How many Sandy Bergers does it take to make one Mark Foley?

You have proof of the Reid-Abrahamoff connection? Or are still to busy barfing up LAST YEARS GOP talking points. You may want to check your fax.

When are these Brainwashed morons going to go away???

The Republicans have raped this country for the last six years and hardly even pretended to be innocent. The VP actually believes that the OVP is a fourth branch of government exempt from oversight and the Pres will soon be taking us into Iran for the fun of it. These slimy congressman have nodded and smiled while this crap has been going on while lining their own packets.

Do you honestly believe that Fox wouldn't be reporting daily on Harry Reid if they had something to say?

Please... Murdoch admitted that he and Fox tried to influence the war.

If this media is so liberally biased, how come we have to put up with inane front page stories about astronauts and diapers and dead playmates when Thousands are dying in Iraq and the Libby trial is showing just how sleazy the VP is.

I was a Republican, but with a net worth under $100 million in stolen funds, I am not represented by them anymore.

High Five!

Posted by: JelloBiafra | Feb 9, 2007 6:07:27 PM

crazeeinjun, you got it right. Hey Parnell, the Reid story was covered on this blotter too. Pay attention. How about asking for coverage on how Bush is replacing several federal prosecuters who, among other things, investigated and convicted Duke Cunningham and are closing in on Rep Lewis for ripping off the tax payers with neo-con cronies who will protect the republican party and its supporters at the expense of the American people? And Bush gave himself this power by slipping in a clause in the unpatriot act to bypass senate review. No that is not slimy at all. Oh and what a conspiracy that ABC isn't showing the tape of the towers falling over SIX years ago. Like we all haven't seen it a thousand times. Oh yeah, that is real bias. Quite a delusional world ya'll live in.

By the way, frodaddy you were on the mark too.

Holly cow!!! How funny to see how you poor old Republicans are "FREAKING OUT" because the dirty laundry is flapping in the breeze. Throw a little more mud why don't cha? But remember, it's like spitting into the wind.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

Lies, lies, and more lies from the wacko ultra-right. Here's the scoop from Media Matters, a research and information center:

"Gingrich falsely claimed Reid took money from Abramoff
Summary: On Fox, Newt Gingrich falsely accused Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of taking money from former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and asserted that this made it more difficult for Democrats to charge Republicans with perpetuating a "culture of corruption."
During Fox Broadcasting Co.'s January 31 special coverage of the State of the Union address, Fox News political contributor and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-GA) falsely accused Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) of taking money from former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and asserted that this would compromise the ability of the Democrats to charge Republicans with a "culture of corruption."

Gingrich's claim regarding money he said "Reid took from Abramoff" has no apparent basis in fact. As Media Matters for America has previously noted, a Center for Responsive Politics breakdown of Abramoff's donations shows that Abramoff made contributions only to Repubicans, not Democrats."

Thanks Sean and remember to tell all the republicans you can find that don't run and cover their ears...Ignoring the FACTS have never ever changed the FACTS...the republicans are going to collapse so far that libertarians, greens, independents, and even 5 percenters may have stronger candidates emerge to run against the strong re-emergence of the DEMOCRATS...ala Jim Webb who really should have clobbered the bushbaby when he had the chance...GOD what a golden glove moment that would have been...credit Jim Webb for holding back the punch as I think he has a more crushing blow to deliver at the proper time...ought to make jim jones and jellobrains shake violently...YA THINK...
