'Too Fat to Be Real' Marine Pleads Guilty
February 01, 2007 1:31 PM
A St. Louis businessman, who was exposed because he was too fat to be a real Marine, has pled guilty to a federal charge he wore military medals he neither earned nor was awarded.
"By posing as a military serviceman, Mr. Weilbacher has dishonored those who have made real sacrifices serving our country," U.S. Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway said after the hearing.
As previously reported on "The Blotter," Michael Weilbacher, 48, was arrested while attending a local Marine Corps League meeting. Federal authorities said they were tipped off to Weilbacher's charade by those who had spotted him in early November at the Marine Corps Annual Birthday Ball, wearing several distinguished medals, including the Navy Cross, the Marine Corps' second highest medal.
THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS
"He was wearing the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars and just about every medal in the book," Major William G. Dragan, who had attended the ball, told ABC News.
"He boasted of getting his Navy Cross by leading a secret mission against drug cartels in Colombia, which seemed very strange to me," Dragan also said.

Plus, Dragan recalled Weilbacher boasting a substantial girth. "He is massively overweight, something like 400 pounds, and yet he claimed he had just left the Marines, which did not add up because he could have never met USMC physical standards."
Weilbacher initially pled not guilty in December. But federal authorities say there is no record of Weilbacher ever serving in the Marines.
"In the time since Mr. Weilbacher was originally charged, Congress passed the Stolen Valor Act, making this crime a felony, instead of a misdemeanor," U.S. Attorney Hanaway said of Weilbacher's guilty plea.
As such, Weilbacher now faces a penalty of six months and/or a fine of $5,000. His sentencing is scheduled for April 13, 2007.
Of today's proceedings, Weilbacher's attorney Scott Rosenblum said his client had "completely and totally accepted his responsibility."

Why would this man want to be something he's NOT?
What did think he would gain from this?
How would he like it, if someone pertented to be him and said they made his bussiness what it is today?

MY DAUGHTERS DAD DID HIS PART IN THE ARMY AND THE ARMY RESERVES AND I MYSELF DID DUTY IN THE ARMY RESERVES FOR 16 YEARS AND TO HAVE SOMEONE DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT ESPECIALLY TO ALL OF OUR SERVICE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SERVED THIS COUNTRY ALIVE OR GONE. HE SHOULD GET A BUNCH OF COMMUNITY SERVICE AND A BIGGER FINE!

I have one to top this: On a singles website, there was a man posing as a full bird Marine Corps Colonel. He even went so far as to display photos of a Marine in combat gear, and a Marine color guard, stating that the photos were of himself. Being a former woman marine, I contacted MCHQ to verify whether this man ever served in my Marine Corps. The answer was a negative; no Marine every served with his name.

Well, if he wanted to be a marine so bad, maybe his punishment should be going through Marine Basic Training until he gets all 400 pounds off, then ship him off to Iraq.

Jail is to good for this guy. Send him to Marine boot camp for 6 months. If he makes it he's free to go. If not bury him in a prison cementery where nobody will care.
I earned my medals while in Vietnam. I paid the price for them . Let this scum bag pay for his life with the Marines.

This guy is a joke. Why does he even make it into the news. I agree with Derek, let him do some Boot Camp and get rid of his lard!!

Yeah, this story deserves a LOT of attention. How about... reporting on the $2.3 TRILLION dollars that the Pentagon cannot account for?
Sep. 10, 2001:
"According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions," Rumsfeld admitted.
$2.3 trillion — that's $8,000 for every man, woman and child in America. To understand how the Pentagon can lose track of trillions, consider the case of one military accountant who tried to find out what happened to a mere $300 million.

This is in Reply to Eric,
It is obvious that you have never had the honor to serve your country. I have spent the last 8 years serving in the Navy, and what this man did was a total and complete discrase to the millions of man and women that has wore a uniform for this country from the Revolutionary War to the current war on terror. And to give him only a max of 6 months and $5000 fine, well I agree with everyone else. Let him keep the money and send him through boot camp for 6 months. Then maybe he will know what it is like to accually earn the honor to wear that uniform. And when he is done send him to Iraq so he can earn all those medals that he proudly displayed. And maybe then he will know what it is like to serve his country.
One last thing, maybe you should go through what the rest of us have, maybe then you will know what its like and not open your mouth on some stupid thing that was written almost 6 years ago.

I work with a jackass who claims to have served in the corps on active duty in Viet Nam. He as born in 1969. As a former jarhead myself he makes my skin crawl.

This is in Reply to Al,
Attacking Eric for asking a very pertinent and still unanswered question is disgusting and unpatriotic.

John...
Eric's comment was neither pertinent to the story, nor timely, as that statement was made years ago.
What is truly disgusting are ignorant idealogues who turn every story into a way to bash someone in our government. If you want to have yourself a little poltical rant...there are places that eat that up.

The guy has self worth problems. As disgracefull as it is, he hurt no one but himself. Maybe we should throw everyone who tries to elevate themselbes in Jail. He lied! Let's throw all liers in Jail. Punishment in place of needed help is the discrace. This kick'em when they're down attitude needs to change!!!

I JUST GOT OUT OF THE MARINES 6 MONTHS AGO, AND I'VE TALKED TO A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT SAY THEY R A FORMER MARINE. AND WHEN I HAVE ASKED THEM QUESTIONS ABOUT THERE SERVICE, THERE ASNWERS DIDN'T ADD UP, I BUSTED MY ASS IN IRAQ WHEN THE WAR FIRST BEGAN, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THAT WENT, PEOPLE LIKE HIM R JEALOUS BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME A U.S. MARINE. IF I WERE TO EVER MEET THIS GUY HE WOULD NOT BE A HAPPY CAMPER, I EARNED MY MEDALS AND HE DIDN'T, SO YEAH U COULD SAY THERES A LOT OF ANGRY MARINES OUT THERE
Posted by: TOBIN | Feb 3, 2007 6:13:56 PM
He insulted the whole Armed Forces, past, present, and future. He wants to be a Marine, let him be tried by a military court and serve his time in a military prison...if only.
I'm sure plenty of thieves and defrauders have self-worth issues. That does not grant such persons a free pass on stealing that to which they are not entitled. They're not called Medals of Honor for nothin'.

Are you kidding me, I mean the first thought that came to my mind was, "Is this an early April fools joke?" I have served 7 years in the military, and this is just disgusting to me. I have seen some foneys and fake people but by far this is the worste. I hope the court deals with him and gives him a sentence he will never forget, and make him understand that the real world in the military isn't just a story and a uniform. Alot of paperwork is involved. I know my deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan is on paper, so this to me is an outrage. Because I am a Marine, he just wore Proud uniform that he is way out of physical standards to even dream about, that makes all the civilians look at us who seen him in public and say to other people, "Marines actually let people look like that?" Thats an embarrassment to me and my service, How dare him!
Posted by: Brandon | Feb 3, 2007 9:15:09 PM
He is a discusting fat body... No jelly donuts for him.
Posted by: Feklarrr | Feb 4, 2007 12:45:15 PM
I think the fat scum bag should not even get the honor to say the Word Marine. No. It would be an honor to him to even attend Marine Corps boot camp. I say he needs to serve life in Prison, after all when I earned the Title, Marine I earned it for the rest of my life. On behalf of anyone that has served and earned a medal in the armed forces in the past and or present, I say give him life with hard labor, work Mr. fat boy to death.

i had to comen on this because there is no way u can fake being a marine. As a marine myself there are somethings all marines know and as u can see its easyt to pick out phonys. he deserves a harsh punishment for dishonring the Core
Posted by: suham | Feb 4, 2007 8:21:34 PM
