Afghanistan: U.S. Forces Attack Suspected al Qaeda Hideout
March 03, 2007 3:12 PM
For the past two days, U.S. and NATO forces have been conducting a major attack against a compound in a remote area of eastern Afghanistan where Osama bin Laden or another senior al Qaeda leader may be hiding, ABC News has learned.
According to eyewitnesses and local reporters in Kunar province, coalition forces launched a fierce attack on a small enclave in the village of Mandaghel, approximately 17 miles from the border with Pakistan on Friday afternoon. Warplanes pounded the positions; U.S. special forces and Afghan National Army soldiers moved in shortly afterwards.
The assault appeared to meet stiff resistance from militants at the compound. Heavy artillery and gunfire could be heard for hours, local witnesses said. A handful of civilians were reportedly wounded in the strike. Though sealed off from outside access, the area now appears to be under coalition control.
U.S. officials declined to identify who the operation was targeting, but indicated they were after a "High Value Target" (HVT). Official sources would not rule out that al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden himself was the intended target. Afghan officials said the target could be another senior ranking al Qaeda leader.
The coalition, which generally refuses to discuss ongoing operations, declined to make an official comment.

According to a local official, the compound under attack belongs to an Islamic militant and suspected drug trafficker named Haji Aminullah.
The area of Kunar province is known as a stronghold of Wahabbists, followers of the strict sect of Sunni Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia, according to Barnett Rubin, senior fellow at New York University. Since the 1980s, the area has been a haven for Arab militants, including Osama bin Laden.

It has been a terrorist hideout since the 1980s. And today we attack it. Something is wrong with this picture.

Funny that neither CNN, Reuters, AP, FOX, UPI, Agence France, etc., are not reporting any type of report re. pursuit or attack on a possible bin laden or high-value target hideout. Looks like ABC might have jumped the gun, or else all of the other major networks are asleep...hhhmmmm.

The CIA made Bin Laden. The present occupant of the Naval Obsrvatory and the former Sec. of Defense hatched the 9/11 plot so you folks could scream for revenge with daisy cutters almost 6 years later.
How is that all going for you?

i hope the hvt is the doctor he is the new terriost leader for aq.Osama was done with the first daisey cutters at tora bora i believe.never forget that tragic day

Just say one thing. Remember the Alamo, Remember the Maine, Remember Pearl Harbor, and last but not least Remember 9-11. Let us all realize the Congress can not fight a war as Viet Nam. Get the Press out and let our boys do what they are trained to do and that is WIN.

WHY WHY WHY Did 9/11 happen?
Why were they so angry to do that?
WHY WHY WHY can't noeone catch, kill or bring to justice BL with all the technology we have today, yet we can find someone else hiding in a dirt hole underground?
Could it be that catching or killing BL would have no real benefit for the US?.. Or that he is too elusive?
Is that why we have set our eyes (or had our eyes shifted to) IRAQ - What did IRAQ have to do with BL or 9/11. ..... Nothing much really when you look back?....But IRAQ had some good oils on the subject!

I wonder if this attack is linked to the capture of the Taliban No 3 last week?
In which case it is more likely to be Mullah Omar than Osama Bin Laden. Which is no bad thing either way.
If it was Bin Laden I think we would have had Georgie boy in the Rose Garden, don't you think.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. The US has become a society of warmongers led by darkness at the top.

this news item is the ONLY item on
the topic. An extensive search at
google news tells me so.
There are no ABC follow-ups on
this news item. Has this item
anything to do with a rating of
some sort ?
Dubious reporting ?
I am leaning toward that
assumption...

as an arm chair observer in the WOT I would say hold to your shorts in 2007. Let's review the facts quickly. Khalid told the group to hold off on attacks and regroup and reorganize a few years back. Al Qaida does just that. Many years have passed since 9/11. in summary, the VP just flew to Pakistan in early spring, the market is going nuts, gas is back up, attacks are on the rise. Remember the U.S. is fighting a group has been at war for over a long time. It is tooooo bad we take a MC Donalds approach to battle! They have patience, we just open another line!
hold on to your shorts...stay safe and prepare your tivo.

it about time we hear some good news.
Posted by: howard | Mar 4, 2007 1:21:00 PM
How about an update from ABC on the story. We have heard nothing from the other networks.

I heard that Haliburton was installing an underground pipeline from Iraq to Bush's ranch in Texas and when Bush's term is over he's going to "retire" to his ranch and discover oil and pump Iraq dry. That's how we're going to get all that oil that we are supposed to be stealing from Iraq. Or was that a Batman movie I was watching?

Thankfully our soldiers will fight the good fight despite the ramblings and delusions of the starry eyed conspiracy theorists .
One to 1 1/2 percent of the population has schizophrenia as evident in some of these postings. No sense in getting upset about it, they can't help believing these far fetched theories. The USA is in the right, and will prevail. Its not about Democrats and Republicans, we are Americans first.

Yes, and the truth is it doesn't matter a whit. The Taliban and Al QAEDA not only control 90 Percent of the country, there is a tidal wave of heroin suddenly hitting Europe and America as they buy the arms that will send NATO packing. Bush lost the war way back in Tora Bora. Why don't you ABC people ever tell America the truth about it. IN FACT WHY DON'T ANY MAJOR NETWORKS REPORT REAL NEWS? I'm sick of hearing what color Anna Nicoles toenails were, what kid
Madonna is adopting next, watching the 1st lady read to neonates, and all stations carrying exactly the same stories.
Russia Today in Moscow carries more news in 10 minutes than you dp all week. And fhsy criticize Putin more jn a week than you have Bush in 7 years.

I wonder how long your president G.W.Bush can keep ignoring the voice of the senat, the voice of the parliament, the voice of the people, the voice of common sense to continue to chase shadows, like a dog chasing its own tail! With god whispering in one ear and money whispering in the other, I'm not surprised he can't hear all the bull he is talking.
And about Bin Laden! Well, who cares if he is dead or alive? Don't we all CREATE our reality (quantum-reality!) in our heads ... so HE IS ALIVE... As alive as Mohammed, Hitler, Saddam, Nero, Alexander, Mao...
As long as we talk about them they live in their legends, good or bad... John Lennon will live forever, so will Elvis, Lincoln, Dr.King, and so many others...
Well, there are only a few things that keep the US from falling apart: the flag and the emotions it inspires in both civilians and soldiers... and A COMMON OUTSIDE ENNEMY. It distracts from trouble, lies, conspiracies, cover-ups inside FOCUSING ATTENTION OUTSIDE!
Don't let yourselves be fooled!

Coalition forces must have the greeen light to do whatever it takes and with whatever it needs to get it done. Let's turn up the world wide heat on finding him and his merry men. al Qaeda must be eliminated at all costs.

i think that we need to remember 911 get the enemy. they dont deserve to live after what they did to our country >__<

Stopping Afghanistan drug trafficking is the same as killing the population slowly...culturally, economically, and physically due to insufficient ariable land
Drug traffic in Afghanistan is more a part of the culture than Islam. Providing drugs is thousands of years old...at least as far back as records go. Only the silk road traffic and being the capital of conquerors ever competed with drugs as economic support. The Khans passed away. The British killed the silk road with sailing ships and introduced opium to the world.
The British should be the ones made to "put this old dog out of its misery".

Except for 9-11, all of these incidents occured on the watch
of our two Presidents, President
Bill and President Hillary Clinton. Shame on them for being
so very stupid, ignorant and dumb.
And now she wants to become our
very first four term President,
God save our country!!!!
