Exclusive: Curveball, the Defector Whose Lies Led to War

March 13, 2007 1:46 PM

Curveball_abc_nr_1The Iraqi defector known as Curveball, whose fabricated stories of "mobile biological weapons labs" helped lead the U.S. to war four years ago, is still being protected by the German intelligence service, an ABC News investigation has found.

Intelligence sources, who provided ABCNews.com with the first known photo of the man, say he has been resettled in a small town near the Munich headquarters of the German service, which has continued to honor its original commitment made when he fled Iraq in 1999.

Curveball's false tales became the centerpiece of Secretary of State Colin Powell's speech before the United Nations in February 2003, even though he was considered an "unstable, immature and unreliable" source by some senior officials at the CIA.

Powell told ABC News he is "angry and disappointed" that he was never told the CIA had doubts about the reliability of the source.

"I spent four days at CIA headquarters, and they told me they had this nailed," Powell said.

Behind the scenes at the CIA, however, a former senior official says he was trying to keep the Curveball information out of the Powell speech.

Drumheller_book_cover_1"People died because of this," said Tyler Drumheller, the former chief of European operations at the CIA, who has written about it in a new book, "On the Brink." "All off this one little guy who all he wanted to do was stay in Germany."

Drumheller says he personally redacted all references to Curveball material in an advance draft of the Powell speech.

"We said, 'This is from Curveball. Don't use this,'" Drumheller says.  Powell says neither he nor his chief of staff Col. Larry Wilkerson was ever told of any doubts about Curveball.

"In fact, it was the exact opposite," Wilkerson told ABC News. "Never from anyone did we even hear the word 'Curveball,' let alone any expression of doubt in what Secretary Powell was presenting with regard to the biological labs," Wilkerson said.

Drumheller also says he met personally with the then-deputy director of the CIA, John McLaughlin, to raise questions about the reliability of Curveball, well before the Powell speech.

"And John said, 'Oh my, I hope not. You know this is all we have,' and I said, 'This can't be all we have.' I said, 'There must be another, there must be something else.' And he said, 'No, this is really the only tangible thing we have.'"

McLaughlin adamantly denies any such meeting or warning from Drumheller and also denies knowing that Drumheller had attempted to redact the Curveball portions of Powell's speech.

"This man never came into my office, sat down, looked me in the eye and made a case that Curveball was a fabricator. That didn't happen," McLaughlin, now retired, told ABC News.

The CIA has since issued an official "burn notice" formally retracting more than 100 intelligence reports based on his information.

Don't try and figure out who is lying because, most likely, they are all lying. These are politicians and elitist career government people who don't REALLY care about the facts nor about who died first and who will be last to die.

cherry picking intelligence to justify a war is lying...

I wonder what the percentage of democrats and independents versus republicans posted thoughts about this article. Not that it should matter what affiliation one belongs to… The WAR in Iraq was more about removing dictatorship, installing a pseudo democracy to gain some sort of economic stronghold in the region. The truth could hit the world right in the face and we'd never know it. Lies and deception is the name of the political game, has been and will always be...

It's amazing that we went to war on the word of 1 person who defected from Iraq. He was so afraid to get deported that he would have said anything to keep himself in our good graces.

You can also see the lead up to the Iranian war that will be started sometime in April. One of there generals is said to have been kidnapped or defected while visiting Turkey, smells familiar? This guy will be put out there to show the world that Iran is behind everything bad happening in Iraq and the world. Which will give the administration it's reason to attack Iran.

There is 21 months left in GWB term. With two wars going the way of vietnam, he needs a win for his legacy. What will happen is he's looking for any thin reason to attack Iran so he could say that it was in self-defense of the troops. You don't put close to 3 carrier groups out in the gulf unless you are about to use them.

When you combine curveball with screwball (Dick Cheney) and eightball (W Bush)and sleezeball (Karl Rove)you have the perfect formula for a nutball...

Can you say political skapegoat? Does anyone really think we went to war over what one single person said? I can't believe the govt. thinks we're that gullable.. then again knowing the intelligence of the average person, I'll bet lots of people are this gullable... I'm frightened for the future.

...good stuff abc. now, follow with articles CONNECTING motive for these lies WITH the benefiting parties: war-profiteers and GOP strategists. THEN the 29% wake up and we can moven on

...and haliburton moves to dubai...on the other hand as far as the administration is concerned I doubt they are smart enough to form a conspiracy, its more of a miasma of arrogance and stupidity swimming in a dream of milk and honey. This is all Rumsfeld and Cheney's doing, Bush is completely disconnected and fatalistically a dreamer.

I personally find it appauling how the Media somehow manages to associate every problem in this country with the Bush Administration and/or the Republican Party. And the story about "Curveball", what the heck is that? The Media portrayed his story like the Bush Administration couyldn't wait to go to war and this was just the excuse they needed. I dare any one person who thinks that they have a damn good reason to believe that Bush jumped the gun and didn't take any thought to peaceful talks before heading to war to come to my house and argue with me. Shame on you all for thinking that anyone could just run off to war like that. The Media should be ashamed of itself for being one sided like this. The Media acts like a child when it points fingers at the Bush Administration for every problem on the evening news.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that ABC didn't post this letter. Why? You ask? Because they are one sided and and don't post letters that support Bush because that would make them look bad and then they might lose viewers. WOW! What a shocker! The Media is only posting bad blogs about Bush because they are one sided! Shame on the American Media in general. Shame!

I like abc news, but was it April Fool's Day today! One, you and I both know that Colin Powell was tricked or forced to do the stupid thing he did at the UN. Next, the Curveball-this is an old, old story that makes abc news look goofy, gullible and either searching for news on a slow day or following a memo from the White House.

You could have done us a big favor by doing some investigative reporting on Haliburton's new venture. Will they move their offices to a tax haven and expect the US government to defend them and the people involved?

Posted by: Patrick | Mar 13, 2007 7:33:03 PM

Incompedence got a new name:
George W Bush and his gang! Come to think of it, incompendence is only part of what we have in the White House. They are vicious, intolerant, above the law, and so revengeful. How could they send Colin Powell to the UN with such lies? How did we elect that lot? They are starting to make Nixon look like a novice!

Posted by: S K Hays | Mar 13, 2007 7:50:22 PM

And to think of all of those men and women, all those sons and daughters, all those parents who lost their precious children!
For what, more political lies, more political gain? The shame is the ones who should be held accountable like any other terrorist criminals will not be! The loss of life and love is irreplaceable, disgusting and its a shame we the people are not even that anymore, we are just numbers in a political game!

Who do you people think you are? Why do you listen to the evening news and then blurt out your opinion? This quote is my example; "Kinda, sorta sounds like the United States Intelligence Services are not too intelligent!!!". Who are you bud? Where did you kinda, sorta hear your news? Oh yeah, ABC!!!
Why don't you do your own homework instead of listening to everything that the news says("Kinda, sorta sounds like...")??!! The Media is just as corrupted as you say the Bush Administration. The Media is here to tell us the facts, and so far, I only hear a lopsided opinion. Shame on the Media!

Wake up America!

If it wouldn't be for the so called liberal media we wouldn't hear anything about this.

While curveball's tales of mobile biological weapons labs may not have been proven true, it is interesting that General Georges Sada, who was an air vice marshal in the Iraqi military, and an advisor to Saddam Hussein has written a book, also about the chemical weapons of mass destruction. After a natural disaster in Syria in 2002, the president of Syria asked for help from Iraq and Jordan. Iraqi commercial airliners, posing as relief supplies, with seats removed, were loaded with chemicals and equipment, and sent to Syria for safekeeping, in a total of 56 sorties, effectively hiding the WMDs.

People will believe what they want to believe. Georgie presented "the facts" to the American people as a matter of fact and the American people wanted to believe this was true (I never onece believed it). Georgie wanted the quick easy "war" that would unite the nation and the business interests in the USA wanted Hussein out of power and a friendly puppet government put in so that they could be the ones to open and exploit the resources. Maybe if things had gone more "their way" maybe you would have seen/saw Halliburton move their headquarters to Baghdad. Never ever underestimate the business interest that 'did not mind' the half truths and fabrications ..."If" those half truths and fabrications served their own busness agendas. The facts of Iraq were pretty well known. You had a desert country of 19 million (very hungry) with no fly zones (British and American planes everyday) in the north and south and you had very porous sanctions in place. "They" (administration) never even bothered to look for a person/persons that could back up the story ( chemical labs)...they believed what they wanted to believe and they went with it and they sold the public on it. This is not the first time and it will not be the last time. Collin Powell..grow up and be a man. Pointing fingers and saying "its not my fault" is the argument of a kid. You are a man of great power and are well respected (by some I guess) and with that power comes responsibility. This "mistake" is partly your fault.

"Curveball" was a defector proffered up by Ahmed Chalabi of the Iraqi National Congress in 1999 after being asked by members of the CIA if he knew of anyone in Iraq who could provide intelligence regarding Saddam's WMD. Ahmed Chalabi on the CIA payroll receiving roughly $30 million each year was more than willing to help out his buddies in Washington D.C.

Instead of defecting directly to the United States, “Curveball” turned up in Germany, where the BND debriefs him. The Intel “Curveball” provided ends up not just at CIA but also at Rumsfeld's Department of Defense’s, Office of Special Plans (OSP), managed by Mr. William Luti. At OSP, the “Curveball” intelligence is used as slam dunk evidence that Saddam is building chemical weapons in mobile trucks and trains.

A staff member at OSP, Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski (USAF, Retired), details the data manipulation in her article "The Next Pentagon Papers" how this crowd at OSP inflated the “Curveball” and other intelligence to justify the war. By 2002, not only the CIA Director George Tenet but the folks at OSP were aware from the German BND and the CIA Chief of Operations in Europe, Tyler Drumheller that “Curveball” was a phony and the Intelligence he provided was phony. Director Tenet suppressed the CIA analyst memo’s and emails reporting this problem with “Curveball.” and informed State Department Head Colin Powell that the Intel was good. To this day, Tenet and his deputy deny the sworn testimony of analysts and Drumheller that they knew “Curveball” was a phony and his Intel was inflated.

I believe that there were CIA analysts who agreed and disagreed with the WMD factory theory like every other theory; most likely, the majority disagreed--except for Paul, Dick, Karl, Donald, George (CIA), and George.

The issue here is "cherry-picking" data and "yes- men".

Another explanation? -Fear factor. Remember "Rummy's" threat DoD staff: "Loose lips sink ships!" As, he made his top general a sitting duck and played "father-knows-best" with most of the pentagon down to one-stars. What hypocracy!

Or, consider "Scooter's" silver-bullet story. Or, Alberto's (what's his code-name?) "Yes, some mistakes were made" story. When covert CIA operatives are endangered and federal prosecutors are fired to prevent justice, it is high time for Americans to stop crying foul & vote more courageous Americans in office.

Posted by: Rod | Mar 13, 2007 10:53:15 PM

Curveball made the UN, the French, the Israelis and all other intel agencies say Saddam had WMD?

Did he provide the satellite photos of moved WMD components at Iraqi facilities?

Did he provide the audio intercepts of Iraqi officers talking about special weapons?

Or maybe he's the one who made Bill Clinton and his entire administration call Saddam's WMD's a threat.

No, it must have been the yet to be fully explained WMD's that Saddam had and were accounted for by the UN during the 90's that must have been "destroyed" or buried somewhere.

Lies that led to war...try your liberal BS somewhere else. Your auidence isn't as dumb as you'd like.
