'The Bishop' Bomber Suspect Arrested in Iowa
April 25, 2007 8:48 AM
Federal agents arrested a 42-year-old former postal worker in Dubuque, Iowa, this morning who they say mailed threatening letters and unarmed bombs to Midwest investment firms, calling himself "The Bishop."
Authorities told ABC News John Patrick Tomkins was taken into custody at first light this morning at his home in Dubuque.
"The Bishop" was the name used by the person who had been sending threatening letters and unarmed pipe bombs since 2005, according to homeland security officials. Two bombs were sent to investment firms in Kansas City and Chicago.
Read the Criminal Complaint Against John Patrick Tomkins.
Investigators say they were led to Tomkins through handwriting analysis and the purchase of bomb-making materials with a credit card they say was linked to him.
"The Bishop" also mailed a picture that had a car door in the background, identified as belonging to a 1990 to 1995 Chevy Lumina. Tompkins had been seen driving a 1993 Chevy Lumina, according to law enforcement officials.
Officials had sent out national alerts about "The Bishop," comparing him to the Unabomber, whose mail bombs killed three people and terrorized the country into the early 1990's. No one was injured by any of "The Bishop's" packages.
"The Bishop's" first letters, in 2005, demanded that targeted companies take steps to move certain stocks to a specific price, often $6.66.
Officials said the unarmed pipe bomb sent by "The Bishop" to Perkins, Wolf, McDonnell & Co. of Chicago, included a letter that said, "The only reason you're alive is I didn't attach one wire. There's nothing the police or anybody can do, so don't contact them."

Must ban the postal system. Only way to stop a guy like this.

"The Bishop"? "$6.66"? Some kind of religious nut.
I(NSH)MO all religious people are nutz, this one is much nuttier.

All religious people are nuts? Hm? Guess, perhaps, athiests can be nuts too,i.e. Hitler, Stalin, Mao- provided for the vast majority of homicidal "nutty" behavior FYI JimmyJay. Last time I was in a church, they were talking about love and peace and tolerance of all people, and yes, obedience to God who, according to the Bible, loves us and wants whats best for us. Its a top seller and a great read, check it out, lots of good "book clubs" that study it and discuss it, aka churches. Peace.

Religious people are definitely wacky

Actually Brian, Hitler often talked about believing in god. And, the deaths attributed to Stalin and Mao, while horrific, pale in comparision to the murders perpetrated by religious zealots.

Brian, thank you for taking a stand for all us. Point well made.
The religious nuts.

If you knew the Jesus I knew, you would not say those things about religious nuts!! The problem is, the media only portrays the insane people who call themselves christians. They give all of us REAL christians a bad name.

pro-brian's got it right. just because someone says they're a Christian doesn't mean they are one. i could say i was a tree or a squirrel and that wouldn't make a difference... same goes with Christians. and yes, this bomber guy is definately a nut...

Hitler wasn't an atheist. He claimed throughout his life that he was a Catholic, and although some commentators suggest that he was more of a Teutonic mystic, he certainly wasn't an atheist. He wrote time and time again about how he was doing God's work, and a famous Nazi belt buckle has the words "Gott mit uns" ("God with us") on it. These are simple facts and are not subject to much in the way of interpretation.
The sine qua non of this kind of thing, though, is probably not religion per se, but rather a devotion to a strong ideology that is beyond respect for individuals. Religion is just one such ideology. Marxism is another.
Nevertheless, I would find religious apologists more convincing if they were more interested in telling the truth.

You need to get over yourselves and stop talking about things that you don't fully understand. The word bishop is much more than just a religious word. So maybe you should look at the more in depth possible meanings that this could be about. It may have nothing at all to do with religion. And unless any of you knew these people Hitler, Stalin and so forth personally. You really have no right to say what you think that believed in. And since none of you wrote the bible either. Leave it out of this.

Wow, a story about a guy who is sending bombs through the mail and that becomes a debate about religion. Give me a break, this is not about religion, it is about federal crimes and potential injury to victims if one of his devices went off.

Maybe this guy should have sent flowers instead? They usually always get the point across better than pipe bombs.

They have to attack it somehow. somewhere, anywhere! As if what they say makes it real.

Jesus was okay, just a little 'Preachy'...

Why this article turned into a religious debate I do not know. Shouldn't we be talking about what a nut this guy is? I mean who even knows whether he has a religion. Just b/c he called himself a bishop and referenced 666 makes him a Christian? Maybe he's just a nut.

Unbelievable...you're right on the money!

We're on the subject, he wanted stock prices at $6.66. A number associated with Satan according to the religious people. Hey let's ride bikes! I like sunshine...oops, let me take my Ritalin.

He was just mentally disturbed. If he was using religion as an excuse, it was just what he decided to obsess about. He could have picked peanut butter and made his excuse. I'm suprised no one is making jokes about him being a postal worker.
Posted by: D | Apr 25, 2007 1:29:14 PM
Religion is irrelevant here, people! The point is that this guy lived 4 blocks from me and apparently was NUTS - religious or not! That's a scary scenario. And, to correct you, he wasn't a postal worker. He was CONTRACTED to work as a rural carrier for a year, but was never actually employed by the USPS. I'm greatful he never took his plans to the next level - what a scary jurk!

I have to agree with D. Not only is the nut 4 blocks from her. he is also right behind the High School. Now that is scarry.
