Gun Store Temporarily Removes Web Site

April 18, 2007 7:44 PM

Gun_website_nr The gun store which sold the guns Cho used to kill 32 people at Virginia Tech has replaced its Web site with a one-page statement, apparently in response to an avalanche of angry messages sent in by visitors.

"To those of you who came here to send hateful emails -- you are entitled to your opinion, no matter how misguided and inappropriate it may be," the note from "all of us at Roanoke Firearms" stated.

"How many of you called the company who sold Timothy McVeigh the diesel fuel or fertilizer used to make the bomb in Oklahoma City, or the company who rented him the Ryder truck?"

The statement thanked visitors who sent encouraging messages to the store. "[W]e appreciate your concern, kindness, and goodwill. We are as troubled by this trajedy [sic] as much as anyone," except for those who lost friends and loved ones in the tragic event, the worst campus shooting in U.S. history.

The store rejected calls to ban firearms, asking rhetorically, "If we ban silverware, do you think there would be no more obesity?"

"“One individual bears the responsibility for the heinous acts committed at Virginia Tech, and that is Cho Seung-Hui," reads the statement, referring to the student identified as the culprit for Monday's mass murder. "If you think otherwise, you have not thought this through."

Cho was the fifth murderer to purchase his weapons at Roanoke Firearms, according to the store's owner. On Monday, he told ABC News "there was just no reason  for me not to have sold him the gun."

The ATF cleared this nut for the purchase of the gun using the NICS (National Criminal Background Check System) before giving the store owner the ok to sell him this gun. Point the finger at the U.S.Dept of Justice for letting this injustice happen

Yeah right, Dale - had he been previously conficted of a crime? It was a FAIRLY isolated incident...nothing could have prevented this. Wish I were wrong, but I'm not...

Jazz - He was previously found to be mentally ill in Dec 05. This would disqualify him from being allowed to purchase the firearms according to question 11F on BATF form 4473. He lied on the form and the BATF didn't catch it either. The BATF told the gun store owner he could sell the weapon. However, I do agree with you that no amount of laws or domestic police state could have prevented what happened.

The news this a.m. indicates that this nut-job was emulating characters from a movie. Where are the Brady-bunch anti-gun zealots on banning movies that depict violence? The silence is deafening.

Unlike the feeble-minded banter with respect to gun control, I don't see or hear Brian Ross and the mainstream media calling for these types of movies to be banned or for the Majority Left Congress to regulate the 1st Amendment...

I guess this is just another inconvenient truth?

As of last night the ATF pounced upon the gun shop seeking his records (form 4473), guess what within seconds he produced Chos form which was sent to the NICS along with the approval from them. They then locked the shop and spent 4 hrs. combing the store for a crime or infringement of a law or rules. Where is Janet Reno when a law abiding citizen is present.

This is a travesty. I feel bad for the store owner.

Bob - very well written. I couldn't have said it myself.

Gun owners should unite and purchase massive amounts of firearms from Roanoke Firearms for the next year. Support this company with our money.

Being a Va Tech grad and a gun shop owner. That is the worst nightmare ever imaginable come true. Blaming the shop owner is as mistaken as blaming the dinosaurs for the oil, and the inventor of plastics.
My heart goes out to the victims, family and friends. Being a surviver of the shootings at Lake Braddock HS in 1982.(Fairfax)
The right to keep and bare arms..to protect ones self against this sort of thing is number one.

I have always said to these people who want to take away a persons rights in being able to defend oneself and others, that " I would rather be armed and have a chance to kill a person like this then to just die as a defenseless victim of his crime" again the other side cannot see this, but put a rapist or gang banger doing rapes/crimes in their neighborhood and gun sales go up, why is this.. people know when the time comes waiting for the police to show is a lot of time is wasted, if you have enough time to be to make the call. Most of the gun sales during crimes like this are to women wanting to protect themselves, good for them.
I am old enough to remember the watts riots and the police telling everyone to protect themselves and not rely on them.. I agree, if law abiding Americans want guns its there right those who don't their choice. enough said the strong have always protected the weak they should be so lucky.

If you want to send a message to the Democrats and Repuplicans, letting them know they must not take away your right to own the means of self-defense, then Vote Libertarian.

Wow, William, you sure getting off the subject!!! maybe thought you were on a different subject without looking what we are opining about. this is about gun control and gun laws, even if I agree with you its about the gun dealer getting the shaft from the ATF and the liberals trying to shove another law down our throats. But to hit send three times? once is enough to make your point. Maybe you could add something to this post? I myself think the liberals are more like the Tories of the American Revolution it fits there style "Hooray for King George " they would say, I say wheres the "TEA Boat" its time!!!

even if he was unable to purchase a gun do you guys honestly think he wouldn't be able to obtain one

the preventative maintenance needed to start at home with his family and what looks like middle school when he bacame a target subjected to a hostile environment

everyone did nothing so the problem escalated
we cant pass the buck, the store owner had no responsiblity let alone any previous history with the customer how in the hell was he to know what would come of one's actions

Posted by: tania | Apr 23, 2007 6:49:16 PM

Tania, the gun stores responsibility was to follow the law, in this case having Cho fill out the form (4473)from the ATF, the US Justice Dept. & office of the ATF. They did not catch his lie, by them not doing a through check ie. local law enforcement which would of popped up on the stalking charges and being in court for mental problems he wouldn't of gotten the gun.
Again we have well enough laws to control things in this country the problem is any money goes into a general fund and distributed in places the politicians wish to spend it. Spending money on the mentally ill is "not" what they are willing to try and fix. What this country needs is a law requiring the money taxed for a specific bill does not go into the "General Fund" to be spent elsewhere. Our Social Security funds are a example with so much money that Congress tapped into it with IOU's and cannot repay leaving us all eating pet food at 62( I hope it's not tainted)Their Social Security funds are not tied to this pot, so they don't give a rats --- about us, they get theirs.
"Long live our Representation".
Send a message and Vote Independent scare them all.

What lie? when the facts were in front of the store owner! Not only did he purchase two guns, he purchased 200 rounds of ammo, and 12 clips for the .22 and 8 clips for the 9mm. At what point do you get suspicious? as a gun shop owner? Cho fired 177 rounds killing 32.

Posted by: JB | Apr 26, 2007 5:50:15 PM

Had Cool-Aid lately JB? Cho purchased the 9mm and a box of 50 rounds from the first gun store and waited for the US Justice Dept. to give him the ok to pay for the gun, the 22 pistol he ordered off of the Internet, he chose a different store to have the gun shipped too, having filled out the 4473 form at the second gun store and waited, the Justice Dept. approved the gun sale of this second gun as the state law requires you to wait 30 days there before the next purchase, this is at store #2.

I don't know what a clip is maybe you are referring to a magazine? Cho made these purchases off of the Internet and these are not controlled by the state, example in Calif. you can only purchase a 10 round magazine here, maybe not so in other states, but in all there is no back ground check for these purchases.

Ammo? most states you have to show a drivers license for the purchase, and records are kept (200 rounds), in all it still points back to the Justice Dept for not doing a through check as the law requires.

The gun store did as the law required of him to do to the "T", it is sad having to know selling a gun and this happened, makes you sick, just make the person doing the crime the responsible person for it he is the one pulling the trigger not you or I and especially not the gun dealer.

Oh...so sad just to talk about Cho…. lets remember the victims, start writing your Legislator to get these types people off the streets and into a hospitals with care, keep the money out of the General fund so it can not be spent elsewhere and hold the authorities responsible for him and others slipping through the cracks from now on. Crime means Big MONEY in our system think about it..... Cops, jails, lawyers, judges, prisons who pays for this the tax payer! if there was a zero tolerance for crime would fewer of the above be so yes a lot of jobs would disappear and people would be safer.

Dale:You dont know me , so dont assume, I belong to a type of people(Cool-Aid drinkers). This is why Cho did what he did, because of name calling bull like you. Obviously a republican.Try comming up with something on your own , instead of what Billy O`Really says.

Posted by: JB | Apr 27, 2007 11:57:48 AM

BJ; same here you don't know me ether, I gather my information from many forms found though Gov and private sources, Cho filled out the form and answered the questions "NO". The point I ‘m making is this system Local, State and the Federal should of had data on him, all these records now magically appear "after" the fact, I don't think so, fact is if the bureaucracy didn’t do their jobs or this system using the "Brady Bill" would’ve caught and refused his purchase.

The citizens who purchase guns or weapons of any type and do so legally through gun laws and the “ATF” checks, also shouldn’t be burdened with bureaucrats who are suppose to check for criminals and nut cases, if the system fails as it will again we are doomed to re-visit this again and again, with yet another gun law not addressing this weak bureaucracy who’s only answer is to add another law without addressing the lack of check enforcement.

When the Brady Bill was put together a sticking point was the records; The NRA didn’t want the records kept after 10 days of the approval of purchase, to get the Bill through the federal Government gave approved of the 10 days sticking point, after the passage the Dept of Justice refused to destroy the records and now have a huge data base on gun owners, but not on criminals gee I wonder why. The State’s Legislative branch need to close the cracks in back ground check above the citizen level, when the courts insist Cho to do so ordered, then it’s on his record! Holding the citizen to blame for obeying the laws for crimes they have not committed is nonsensical.

A Conservative Independent; who’s neither right or left. Looking inside the box from the outside you have a better view!
