Look-alike Arrested Twice; Close But No Bin Laden
April 30, 2007 9:54 AM
An Afghan tribesman with an uncanny resemblance to Osama bin Laden has now been arrested twice, both times following reported sightings and massive manhunts for the al Qaeda leader, Pakistani intelligence officials tell ABC News.
Over six feet tall and with the same angular nose as bin Laden, Sher Akbar comes from an Afghan village, Bagh e Metal, in an area where U.S. officials believe bin Laden has been hiding.
Bin Laden is believed to be six feet four inches to six feet six inches tall and weigh 160 pounds. He is 50 years old.
The most recent arrest of bin Laden's near-twin came after Afghani officials reported informants saw bin Laden moving across the border into Pakistan, near the town of Chitral.
"We arrested this man as a result of this investigation, but it's not who you might think it is," a senior Pakistani intelligence official told ABC News, providing a photograph to make his point.

The official said an extensive investigation involving Pakistani and U.S. intelligence officers found that the look-alike has no connection to bin Laden, but that local residents had tried to collect rewards based on Akhbar's resemblance to bin Laden.
The United States has offered a $25 million reward for information that leads to the location of bin Laden.

I wonder how many people are to comment about Liberal boogeymen on this post.

I just wanted to add a tid bit that usually accompanies all ABC News reporting:
This is President Bush's fault...Everything that is and ever has been wrong with the world or the U.S. is President Bush's fault...
Posted by: jim jones | Apr 30, 2007 10:34:07 AM
really? what are the odds that someone who looks that much like ubl would live in the same area that ubl is reported to be hiding out?
Posted by: elizabeth | Apr 30, 2007 10:35:31 AM
he should be used to capture the rest of the gang,am sure this bloke can be used somehow.
Posted by: FADI | Apr 30, 2007 10:37:17 AM
Yes, but was he on the Washington DC madam's list...!?
Posted by: Ron | Apr 30, 2007 10:40:41 AM
Remember when we took ABC seriously? Perhaps that was a mistake.
But if Roseanne can replace Rosie on The View, can this poor sap replace UBL and finally get the $25 million?
Inquiring minds need to know...

Save the United States, repeal the 12th amendment.

Some people need to understand that there is a war going on and that is the justification. We will not win because the United States is not willing to do what it takes. We have to destroy their will to fight. The only way to do this is through Harsh Actions.

This guy's going to Gitmo sooner or later.
Posted by: jdoe | Apr 30, 2007 11:04:04 AM
Bill Clinton had several chances to arrest the Osama Bin Laden look-a-like but never took any action...
Posted by: Phil McCracken | Apr 30, 2007 11:06:44 AM
i am reading all of these blogs and i can't beleive the imaturity of the responses given. i thought this was a serious news site. so the guy looks like bin laden. we captured sadam, we'll get bin laden too.
Posted by: sv | Apr 30, 2007 11:18:18 AM
I'm surprised Bin Laden hasn't used this guy to his advantage.. Or is he? Funny he is arrested at a time when UBL is believed to be moving around.. Great Decoy.. Kinda like Saddams look a likes..
Posted by: STEELHED | Apr 30, 2007 11:32:18 AM
Hollywood should snap this guy up for the next Bin Laden movie of the week.
Posted by: Scott | Apr 30, 2007 11:43:04 AM
Guys, this is actually an encouraging story. At least the military is acting on leads and that "informants" are telling officials that they have seen bin Laden. Obviously this story is just fluff and is meant to be funny, but a positive can b e seen from this. The military is looking for him, and he will be caught one day.
Posted by: B | Apr 30, 2007 11:44:28 AM
Put him in Gitmo and he'll end up believing he's Osama Bin Laden--it's work before for other suspects. Then, Bush can declare victory that indeed the Big Fish is caught and anything that happens afterwards is just a sign of more victory.

What is the point of this story?
The point is that the entire intelligence community was probably chasing this dude all along ("saw bin Laden moving across the border into Pakistan"). News travels fast. The three letter agencies will listen to anyone. I wouldn't be surprised if their 'guess' as to where he is changes to a completely different part of the globe. . . probably in search of another look alike.

I wonder if anybody has considered the possibility that Bin-Laden got plastic surgery to look different and this guy REALLY WAS HIM!
Posted by: Robert Nunemaker | Apr 30, 2007 11:59:01 AM
We had something similar here in Detroit. Two men, with the same name, born on the same day at the same hospital. One a career criminal, the other an innocent guy who has been arrested 7 or 8 times by mistake
Posted by: Mike Lombardini | Apr 30, 2007 12:01:17 PM
I wonder how many times we have paid the 25mil, and then discovered how stupid we were? oh yeh, we don't make mistakes cause we are 'mericans.
Oh say can you see by the dawns early lighhhhhhhhh....
Oops I kinda got teared up thinkin on 'us'.
Posted by: howdy | Apr 30, 2007 12:03:07 PM
Ha. You cant make this stuff up......! This is more entertaining to read these posts that to watch anything on TV.......keep it coming...........

Its pretty sad when a country with as many weapons as the USA cannot catch a simple construction worker.
You can spend billions on war and oil exploits but cannot track down a religious man.

Isn't this profiling? Where is the ACLU? Haha.
Posted by: UBL | Apr 30, 2007 1:41:32 PM
You think the guy would figure it out and maybe shave or lose the turbin. If I live in the same region as the most wanted man on the face of the earth, I think I would do everything in my power not to look like him. We all know Bin Laden is hanging out in France. Don't worry France, you sit back and relax we will capture all the terrorist. No seriously, sit there and do nothing.
Posted by: Dotson | Apr 30, 2007 2:09:51 PM
When you consider how many 'enemy combatants' are detained in Gitmo without being charged with any crime, it's a wonder this guy wasn't head indefinitely the FIRST time he was picked up. And just how did he prove he wasn't OBL? That type of information, just like the locations of the WMD, will nenver be told to the American public because we can't be trusted with such, according to Big Brother.
Posted by: mike | Apr 30, 2007 2:15:20 PM
Simple advice for the Bin Laden look alike ... Shave the beard! It's a simple fix.
Posted by: Bryan | Apr 30, 2007 2:25:11 PM
bin Laden uses this guy as the canary in the coalmine. When people come looking for the terrorist they find this guy first which is exactly the way Bin Laden designed it. He then knows who is looking for him.
Posted by: almc logistics | Apr 30, 2007 2:43:20 PM
We should hire this guy to star in propaganda films we can leak to the middle east with him saying "the jihad is over, let peace reign". It would probably work!
Posted by: paul | Apr 30, 2007 3:00:44 PM
Wow. I wonder if the Bin-Laden look alike knows how much money he could be making as a standup comedian on American TV?
He wouldn't even have to learn English they could just used subtitles or an interpreter.
Posted by: Dennis Garwitz | Apr 30, 2007 3:04:39 PM
This story only PROVES that the war on terror is working! If you can come close to catching an Osama look alike then it only means GWB is winning the war on terror.
Posted by: Zach | Apr 30, 2007 3:17:13 PM
Wow... it definitely looks more like Bin Laden than the guy in the infamous (fake) Bin Laden 9/11 "confession" video.
Posted by: Sean | Apr 30, 2007 3:21:35 PM
This guy could probably get away with cashing Osama's CIA paycheck.
Posted by: Bob | Apr 30, 2007 3:38:09 PM
Bin Laden's whereabouts,
logically, a person with immense wealth,
a person with a broad family network, a person with medical needs. It is obvious to me, he is in Saudi Arabia with the full knowledge of the House of Saud. carrying on his terroist plans with their total support and knowledge

The REWARD MONEY explains it all. They should keep his biometric records stored just in case there's another misunderstanding.

makes you wonder if we could have actually caught the real bin laden had we not been so busy spreading democracy in iraq with bombs and hangings. but seriously, i think this guy has a good shot at the next ABC made for tv movie concerning terrorism!
Posted by: camus | Apr 30, 2007 4:38:17 PM
Here's a crazy idea - Even though you look just like the subject of an international man-hunt, whatever you do, don't ever even think of, say, SHAVING THE BEARD and maybe NOT DRESSING JUST LIKE HIM!
Posted by: Taylor | Apr 30, 2007 5:36:17 PM
Haha! I love the 2nd comment on here from Jim Jones.....the republicans will soon follow with their reply that somehow this is Clinton's fault...anything that is wrong is always traced backed to Clinton.......

UBL is now ELVIS!
Posted by: Gothen | Apr 30, 2007 6:28:17 PM
withdraw our troops and send all of United State's prisoners on life sentences there and give them a chance to find this guy? In fact, let's play fire with fire and maybe we can create "Americanized" sleeper cells in Iraq. It'd be a lot cheaper.
Posted by: Thinking outside the box | Apr 30, 2007 6:28:44 PM
how about we send him to new york to be a guest host on the view until we catch the real obl...

Posted by: Pedro | Apr 30, 2007 6:50:26 PM
bin Laden is DEAD, folks.......He died from kidney failure. All this is for is to keep the Americans busy while our govt sells us out to Mexico & forms the North American Union.
:/

Anybody cared to check if Bin Laden had a second ID card that says "Sher Akbar"? You know, just in case...
Posted by: meunierc | Apr 30, 2007 8:07:36 PM
Bush could probably arrest him and convince half of this country it's the real deal. Fox would be all over that.
Posted by: Marc | Apr 30, 2007 8:22:25 PM
I saw Bin Laden coming out of the Public Eye rib joint in Memphis with Elvis. He went down to Chickasaw County in Mississippi and is hiding out with the big E down there.
Posted by: JackTR | Apr 30, 2007 8:24:13 PM
If I were him, I'd shave.
Posted by: Ben | Apr 30, 2007 8:39:00 PM
The CIA should plant this guy in Iran. It will give George Bush an excuse to invade the place.

Please, posters, do a little research on where Bush 43 got his money to fund Arbusto Oil in Texas. If you do you will find that he got it from the Bin Laden family of Saudi Arabia. His daddy, Bush 41, got his money to start Zapata Oil from the Saudi Family - I meand THE Saudi family. Check it out - you'll see this is true. The Bush's don't wand Osama to be found. While your doing your research, you will discover also that Osama was/is a CIA operative and was chosen by the CIA to head the Taliban and Taliban was funded by American British banks, so they could keep Russia from invading. If you are laughing about these claims - it is because you haven't yet done the research.

How insensitive to suggest that a man whose regional variant of Islam probably dictates that he not cut his beard should ignore his faith and cut that beard to avoid arrest!
Don't you think by now somebody has circulated a set of Bin Laden's fingerprints to international law enforcement agencies so they can confirm whether the arrestee is really him?
I should think Shek Akbar is glad he wasn't killed by an armed surveillance drone or shot at long distance. At least law enforcement took steps to confirm his identity. The man may himself support Bin Laden's arrest!
Posted by: Sue | Apr 30, 2007 11:30:28 PM
"funny" story. The poor guy must have been in a shock ! Anyway, looking UBL overthere is just ridiculous as everyone knows he is enjoying good time by his swimming pool in Florida (at the expense of US taxpayers of course !)
Posted by: Aymeric | May 1, 2007 6:43:55 AM
That guy looks NOTHING like UBL.
Posted by: Jazz | May 1, 2007 5:47:15 PM
Shaving his beard would just get the guy in bigger trouble. It's probably a religious requirement that he keep it or at least a big enough cultural thing that shaving it would make it look like he's hiding something. Maybe he should wear a hunter orange robe with NOT BIN LADEN written big across it. I'm sure he is being used to disguise Bin Laden's true movements. My guess is unwittingly because I'm sure they've investigated his family and friends thoroughly and accounted for every pul.

I agree with the comments about this dude possibly being used by Bin Laden as a canary in the coal mine. Once this guy is nabbed, Bin Laden knows that The Man is in the area. Like Saddam (or Princess Amidala), using decoys can definitely help you out.
My favorite comment is this one though... "We should hire this guy to star in propaganda films we can leak to the middle east with him saying "the jihad is over, let peace reign". It would probably work!" -- ROFL!!

US Americans need to understand there is no war. There can be a war between nations; there can't be a war against terrorists. The more people you kill, the more people willing to kill an american. This "war" has nothing to do with your security, it is about power, oil, money and expansionism. Don't be stupid!
