Top Al Qaeda Leader Captured
April 27, 2007 11:06 AM
A top al Qaeda leader has been detained and captured, the Pentagon announced this morning.
Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi is described as al Qaeda's top operational planner in Afghanistan. He was also reportedly planning an assassination attempt on Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf.
Officials say he was responsible for several attempted assassinations, including previous attempts on the life of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and cross-border attacks on coalition forces in Afghanistan. He has long-standing ties to the Taliban that go back to the 1990s and acted as a liaison between al Qaeda and the Taliban.
Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi was captured by the CIA as he was attempting to travel back to his native country, Iraq. He was going to Iraq, officials say, to "manage" al Qaeda's operations, including plots on Western interests outside of Iraq.
He was captured by the CIA in late 2006 and held at a secret CIA detention facility until this week, when he was transferred to Gitmo and Department of Defense custody.

During his time with the CIA, Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi was interrogated and revealed useful information about al Qaeda plots, which, officials say, have been disrupted as a result.
Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi had met with al Qaeda members in Iran, officials also said.

Good counterpoint to the cowardly Democrat "surrender now" election plank. Al Queda is out to kill us and we are engaging them, pursing them and capturing them. (I'd just as soon we killed them as soon as we got what we can out of them as they are ruined and unrecoverable human beings.) To me, surrender is not an acceptable choice. Its them or us.

I cannot believe how many illiterate people there are in this country. How can anyone take these comments seriously when you can't even express yourself correctly? Whomever it was that said "the dumbing down of America" hit the nail squarely on the head. Sometimes I am ashamed to call myself an American.

It's good that this report was delayed in getting out to the public. Otherwise, the Democrats and the ACLU would have been yelling because this guy was denied silk pajamas and a soft bed and nobody would have gotten any worthwhile information out of him. Let our Intelligence Community and our Military do their job. That's what we pay them for. War is not a pretty thing and never has been. But you don't handle depraved killers with kid gloves. Treat these people like normal human beings and they'll slit your throat the first time you turn your back on them.

Hard to fight terrorists with the Liberal Socialist Democrat's telling them the "War Is Lost" and "We Surrender, You Win", message. Why do Liberal Socialist Democrats hate our military I will never know. A real mystery.

I'm betting as the election gets closer we will see more and more "top Al Qaeda leader" announcements of capture. This administration will politically drag victories into the news as needed to remain in power. The Bush administration has stuck our sons and daughters in the middle of someone else’s civil war and the American people are not happy about it.

"He was captured by the CIA in late 2006" So if this is the case then why is it so bad right now? Republicans will be riding this one high. We lied about Pat but hay we got this guy, what have the dems done?
Open your eyes people, troops are still being killed, this does not matter at all.

This comes as great news that we captured another Cell leader. The reason we are just now releasing this information, is because we have gotten all that we can out of this guy and we did not want to tip off the terrorists and ruin their "attempted plots". The comment about our President flying sorties in the mainland is retarded. Apples and oranges. He is doing much more to combat terrorism than any Democrat would. They want tuck tail and retreat like in Vietnam.

This is good news. I don't understand why some people use this good news as a platform to attack Democrats, though. Hopefully they will get Bin Laden soon, also.

Bin Laden is long dead in Tora Bora.

My response to Chris is "Probably not." The bill up for approval is to withdraw substantial amounts of COMBAT troops. The US military won't disappear from Iraq anytime soon, and neither will intel forces.
And Bill, it's been posted already, but what does anybody's combat military service (or lack thereof) have ANYTHING to do with their ability to execute public policy?

Intersting timing, just when GW is about to veto the Dems withdrawl bill.
Wonder if they did the waterboard torture in that secret prison?
And if anybody really thinks that this is the beginning of the end to terrorism, think again. We got rid of Saddam and that hasn't stopped anything. The result was actually increased terrorist attacks.
Iraq is a civil war and staying in Iraq for however long isn't going to change the face of terrorism or the civil war. As long as there are fanatics in this world, as long as there are people who want control or countries, as long as there are political extremist, terroism is not going away.

somehow, i KNEW those sneaky republicans were going to pull some al-quaeda operative out of their ears to justify the inevitable bush veto of this withdrawal resolution. they've probably had this guy hanging out in tahiti, waiting for a cell phone call from cheney for months, if not years now. they called him in for backup! how transparent. the american public, for the most part, is NOT dumber than our president!

Caught in 2006. CIA had to get the truth or just lies from these terorrist, all that were caught on the battle feild. Unfortunatly the terorrist are whom our intelligence believe and acted upon. We were attacked on a Republicans watch, dont ever forget that!

So he is a major in Saddam's army and has been working with the Taliban and Al Qaeda for 20 years. Just another "no connection" between Saddam and Al Qaeda. Bwahahahahahaha.

Leaving Iraq has nothing to do with the “cutting and running” slogan Republicans like to throw out when ever they are loosing an argument. Our kids are dying trying to keep the peace in a country intent on destroying itself. The only thing that will stop this war is the people in the REGION saying enough is enough. The countries SURROUNDING IRAQ can stop it. We are only being used as an excuse by extremist religious leaders to recruit other parents kids into killing themselves and ours. As long as we are there and the region allows it to happen, this war will be never ending. There are people all over the world that believe we have handled this wrong. As much as I love this country (and yes, Democrats love this country too) we need to admit our mistake and correct it. Capture as many Al Qaeda as we can but get out of Iraq. Maybe other contries will start helping us instead of enabling them.

It's always good news when a terrorist is stopped, but it was not the GOP that caught him. It was the CIA working on behalf of all Americans. Also with regard to W'S military service lets not forget that this brave man is the first president in American history to go AWOL and amazingly his records disappeared. Wow what a guy...

"He has long-standing ties to the Taliban that go back to the 1990s and acted as a liaison between al Qaeda and the Taliban." and "he was attempting to travel back to his native country, Iraq."
Hmmmm? Anyone recall the Democrats anti-war talking point that al-Qaida was not in Iraq prior to 2003? I do believe this turns that argument upside down..don't you?

Great! They got him and a dozen other "master minds" behind AQ in the last 6 years.
Bring the troops home now.
Mission accomplished!

Dave,
Can we please stop with the never ending jabs at our President by smearing his service to his country?
If you've never earned your Private Pilot License, Instrument rating, Commercial and ATP tickets plus a JET rating, downplaying W's accomplishments by besmirching his service to his country is disingenuous and one can argue, un-American. I'm a fighter pilot and let me tell ya, earning your wings is no small feat!
Capturing this scum bag is great news for the country and the world. I have flown many missions over Iraq, in both wars, PLUS, the No-Fly Zones, hence I know what I'm talking about! The world's intelligence communities were unanimous in their analysis that Sadaam had weapons of mass destruction. Additionally, he violated 17 UN resolutions after we killed his army in DESSERT STORM. This was more than enough transgressions for us to whack his now dead ass at any time we wanted to.
May I ask those here on this message board to do us in the military a HUGE favor? Please stop with the rants that W lied, that this war is being fought over oil, etc., etc. My team mates and I are eliminating those who have sworn to kill us where ever they may be. I have seen them up close and personal, and the threat is real! The never ending rhetoric back here is only giving these scum bags a bigger head! Now, I don't mind that, it makes for an easier target, but it truly does embolden them!
Thanks.
