Husband of Charged Academic Worries She Could Be Subject to Harsh Interrogation Techniques

May 31, 2007 2:21 PM

Husband_of_char_mn_2The Iranian authorities use interrogation techniques such as intimidation, threats and blindfolding, said the husband of a detained American academic, and he is very worried that his wife could be subjected to these tactics.

Shaul Bakhash, the husband of Haleh Esfandiari, who was charged with spying by Iranian authorities, said he has not spoken to his wife since her detention and is concerned about her mental and physical condition.

She has been allowed to make phone calls to her mother in Tehran a few times a week, said her husband. He said that nothing of substance is discussed on the calls, and that despite the brevity of the calls, her mother looks forward to them every day.

"Her mother in Tehran is ecstatic," said Bakhash. "She hangs on them so much."

The colleagues of Esfandiari pleaded today for her release.

"Haleh is innocent. She should be set free," said Lee Hamilton, director of the Woodrow Wilson Center where Esfandiari works.

Esfandiari is one of four Americans currently detained in Iran. The others are Parnaz Azima, a Radio Farda journalist, Kian Tajbakhsh, a scholar with the Soros Foundation's Open Society Institute, and Ali Shakeri, confirmed by the State Department for the first time today as being detained by Iranian authorities.

Deputy State Department spokesman Tom Casey said the string of detentions are part of a "disturbing pattern."

Esfandiari's troubles began as she drove to the airport in Tehran to catch a flight back to her home in Washington, D.C., after visiting her ailing mother. According to her family, she was robbed at knifepoint by masked men who took her bags and passport.

When she went to get a new passport, she was pulled aside at the passport office and subjected to lengthy interrogations by Iran's Ministry of Intelligence. Those interrogations continued for several weeks.

A Feb. 20 letter by Wilson Center Director Lee Hamilton to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad requesting Esfandiari's release was not answered.

Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

Knowing the current political climate in that region why anyone would go there is way beyond me.

Ski, the story indicates it was because she went to see her ailing mother...I'd go to Cambodia in 1976 to see mine...

BUT, of course, she's the one who assumed 100% of the risk, so her and her husband can in no way be the least bit surprised...

intimidation, threats, and blindfolding...sounds like US interrogation techniques...are we sure we're not confusing Tehran with Guantanamo here?

Jazz, I did read that and your point is taken.

Posted by: skidog | May 31, 2007 3:46:44 PM

Is this Guantanamo?
If it is, she'll eat better then she would in Tehran. You MORON!!!!!
ABC News! you and your editors should be drawn and quartered. Or shoot!

Shoot no waterboarding or shock torture, sounds better than what we do.

It's such a shame the US has lost the moral high ground here. I'm not comparing what is happening in 'Gitmo' with how this poor woman is being treated. I'm just making the point that 'Gitmo' has stuffed your credibility on the subject of unlawful imprisonment. And that is a crying shame.

Anericans only notice what happens to your people. If you want to know what she could expect, google Zahra Kazemi... I can't believe it hasn't been referenced once in any of the news reports on this...

One must be really stupid to put ones self in such a situation. Sorry, I can't feel for this person.

Posted by: Steve | Jun 1, 2007 7:34:16 PM

It's pretty lawful imprisonment, actually...better than getting shot dead on the battlefield...

I'd rather have some shmuck stuck in a gitmo cell, getting 3 meals a day, than blowing up the C train on my way to work...

boo hoo...

Posted by: Jazz | Jun 3, 2007 8:32:39 AM

Perhaps you've only witnessed terrorism from afar, empulse; perhaps not.

I'm not completely sure that any of the gitmo prisoners are guilty of anything. I'm also not sure that they aren't. I don't work in that profession...

I'm saying that perhaps, there ARE guests of gitmo who, up to the point of their capture, only wanted you dead...

IF that were the case, wouldn't you want these people detained or shot dead? If not, that's your right, but why?

...and the name calling, h.u.y.a. stuff is just childish...pretty lame...

wow, robbed at knife point. The last thing you would expect is to be accused and interrogated for such a long period of time. I'm sorry for her husband that seems to have not been able to talk to her personally.

lie lie lie that is the story since 9/11.
who is going to say the truth?

yordoshbek, whoever knows the truth should speak the truth...

What happens at Gitmo, stays at Gitmo. Ive seen worse hazing at LSU than what happened there. If somebody knew if the U.S was going to be hit with another suicide attack..id hold the waterhose myself if it meant protecting the lives of americans and even the liberals who side with and protect our enemies (since vietnam) Remember the 4 american contractors who were tortured, burned to death, and hung up on a bridge while iraqis were chanting below? Or our enemies decapitating americans on video for all to see? Wait, the left want to go after the nudie photos..the humanity!

Anyone who is familiar with Iranian interrogation techniques for women knows that it routinely includes rape and gang rape along with other heinous actions. A woman recently died as a result of rape with a foreign object which ruptured some internal organs. (I don't recall her name but a quick Google search will give you her case and more sadly). Last time I checked the individuals at Gitmo were being fed, given Koran to read, receiving medical care etc. Nobody to my knowledge at Gitmo has died from being gang raped with the permission of the govt. as an "interrogation" technique!
Given a choice, she would probably prefer waterboarding to the alternative!

What in the hell is the matter with ABC? It appears this network is becoming more and more like the Faux News channel every day, beating the drums for war.

Posted by: Rocky | Jun 12, 2007 8:51:33 AM

Rocky, this is not a faux story - Esfandiari will likely be indicted by the end of this week by the Iranian government. How big a story is this, exactly? Dunno, but it is what it is...
