'John School' for Scandal
May 04, 2007 10:44 AM
As part of a crackdown on prostitution, the Justice Department is spending $25 million on "John Schools," allowing men caught in prostitution investigations to avoid criminal charges and public exposure.
Wives and girlfriends never need to know.
Instead in at least six major cities around the country, the men attend a three to six-hour course, where they are instructed on the dangers and harms of prostitution by former prostitutes, prosecutors and health officials.

"This program is offered to help keep your record clean," prosecutor Marisa Mercandetti told a group of men this week at a John school called "Project Respect" run by the District Attorney's Office in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The men pay a $250 fee, and the arrest is stricken from their record if they are not caught soliciting a prostitute again within six months.
In Brooklyn, prostitutes are also offered a six-week rehabilitative program to help get them off the streets.

But in many parts of the United States, programs for women arrested on prostitution charges don't exist, a discrepancy in punishment that is all too common, says Dr. Melissa Farley, the director of the Prostitution Research and Education Center in San Francisco.
"What usually happens in prostitution stings is that the women are arrested. The women are incarcerated. The women are taken out in handcuffs," says Farley. "The men who buy and use women in prostitution slowly and quietly slink off."
Dr. Farley says that while "John schools" could be considered a form of punishment, they still perpetuate the idea the crime is worse for the women selling than for the men buying. "It's too minor a penalty for an act that I consider a human rights violation," she says. Dr. Farley says that usually a John will receive the same treatment as a jaywalker.
But in Brooklyn, prosecutors say they are equally as tough on the Johns as they are on the prostitutes. They say the John schools help curb the demand side of the prostitution business.
"The DA believes that an effective way to deal with the ever growing problem of prostitution was to focus on the demand: the men paying for sex, the 'Johns,' which is all of you here tonight," prosecutor Mercandetti told the men attending class this week.
During the five-hour presentation, the men listen to former prostitutes tell their stories of abuse and degradation, watch slide shows with graphic examples of sexually transmitted diseases and are reminded that solicitation of prostitution, while a misdemeanor, is still against the law.
"No one here is your lawyer. We have not been retained to help you with any legal matters," warned Assistant District Attorney Mercandetti. "You only have one opportunity to take this program. You only have one chance. The next time you're arrested for patronizing a prostitute, there will be no program offered. You only have one chance from removing this charge from your record, and if you should commit this crime again, you will go to trial, and it will be a public trial."
We want to teach you "respect for women, respect for the law, respect for the communities in which you were arrested and respect for yourselves and your family," she told them.
The Kings County Sex Crimes Unit Chief Rhonnie Jaus says that in Brooklyn there is a very low recidivism rate for offenders who attend the school. Out of 2,000 participants, only nine have returned. "The Johns program is an alternative to incarceration," she says.
Dr. Farley says it is important to establish that prostitution is not a "victimless crime" as is often the perception. "Prostitution usually involves the appearance of consent. For the woman who's being bought, it's an acting job," she says. "You don't go into prostitution and risk HIV, rape and sexual assault just in order to go to a spa or get your nails done. There are more compelling factors, like economic need and a history of sexual abuse, that lead women into escort, or any other prostitution."

This doesn't sound right........... So, will they also start having drug addict schools and only arrest the sellers? Notice this is conducted by the Justice Department and will not notify wives or girlfriends.
We need to see more of that list before they sweep it under the rug.

I think it's a good idea to let John's visit a John school. Most of these guys don't have a clue about women and need to meet some women who was in the escort biz and who can tell them the truth about it. Add some human trafficking victims to the
calculation and it is clear that visiting
escorts is like visiting a slave brothel.
Remember, we abolished slavery and Pimps and Madams are often nothing better than slaveholders.
The least Johns can do to is to visit a John school to get tl learn the other side of the coin.
Also, read some escort review boards online. They are always fun to read.
Here the perfomrance ot the meat trade gets evaluated according to performance.
It's called "quality control", after all
it also pressures women to do more than
they might have done wothout the review
boards. Another way to control women are
escort review boards.
I am sure the ladies here have outstanding reviews written at the
local escort review board.
Have fun! :-)

This is all well and good but as my mother used to tell me "A stiff one has no conscience" so I don't know how much good this going to do. Are the taxpayers paying for this???? Isn't this along the lines of what the Catholic Church did to "treat" their pedophile priests? Didn't work either. This is just another way for the johns to get off scot free and sweep it all under the rug while the prostitutes get jail time.

Exactly.
Who are we kidding! These guys are leaving "John School" laughing and saying, "Whew, I got off on that one!" What a joke.
Prostitution should be a misdemeanor, while Solicitation of Prostitution and Pimping should be felonies. They are hate crimes in my view.
Most prostitutes find their way into prostitution because they mistakingly think it's the best way (or a temporary way) to support themselves and their children. They don't do it because they like it - it's economics for them.
Prostitutes are the ones who ought to get free school! Job training school!

So a woman can legally consent to:
1.) Be filmed having sex with a stranger without a condom for payment.
2.) Take off her clothes in a strip club for payment.
3.) Surrogate a child for payment.
4.) Sell her pet's (if she has one) time for breeding.
but she cannot consentually have sex with a stranger for payment? I am not disputing that many of those who turn to that industry are doing so for economic reasons and don't enjoy it, but similar could be said for many lower class workers who take nasty, low paying jobs just to survive. Who are we to say a woman cannot have sex for money? It may have made sense to try before antibiotics, condoms, and birth control, but now it makes more sense to regulate it like certain counties in Nevada, to require prophylactic use and regular testing.
Trying to enforce laws of this nature just forces the whole situation underground and creates black markets which are very hard to properly govern.

This is a very incomplete report. Most programs are restoitive justice programs and completely self sufficient with some or all of the funding going for services for women and girls. There are over 30 similar programs throughout the country. Research is showing that men who are arrested do not displace and the program reduces recidivism. Many programs are run by survivors of the sex trade. The money from the program in one area of the US funds a full safe house for women, in many other areas, it pays for full specturm counseling services for women and children so damaged by the sex industry. Demand reduction no matter what strategy is used should always be a policy and on the forfront. Take Germany and the Ntherlands for example, they are recruiting areas for men, they have leaglized prostitution and are the two largest receiving countries IN THE WORLD FOR TRAFFICKED WOMEN. Increase the demand and increase the supply, usually young vulnerable girls and women. Who is vulnerable to fill the demand------any woman or girl-period. it is a 20 to 30 billion dollar industry that fuels organized crime syndicates. Men like Tobias pay those billions of dollars, one dollar at a time, and we collude!!!!!

How DARE you say "Your wife never needs to know". Should they know when to be TESTED for STD's or AIDS!
Thanks for nothing!

"Take Germany and the Netherlands for example, they are recruiting areas for men, they have leaglized prostitution and are the two largest receiving countries IN THE WORLD FOR TRAFFICKED WOMEN."
This is utterly untrue. Thailand has a far, far bigger sex trafficking industry than the Netherlands or Germany. China also has a larger sex trade.
The biggest ally of antiprostitution laws aside from religion is ignorance like this. The "Amsterdam model" really shows farily conclusively that legalization in that country has coincided with a significant reduction in sexually related crimes.

You need to study more!!! The Red Thread (a 15 yr old organization providing condoms in the Amsterdam red light district)and the Green Party in both Germany and Amsterdam are the ones that admit that THEY are now the largest receiving countires of trafficked women. These are direct quotes from the Head of the Green party in Germany. In Amsterdam, the Red Thread and the Head of the Greens stated, "there is no longer legalized prostitution in Amsterdam, It is all illegal." Both contries are looking at demand reduction stategies-Amsterdam more with more aggresstion. They have even called for abolition-big SHOCK and AWE. I know this is disappointing but "out of the mouth of babes." They are living it.

Wow, so if a politically affiliated orgasnization says something is true, it must be. Seems like odd logic.
The Green Party is not some official sex trafficking police force. Remember to count political agendas in when you find your sources. You need to be in thailand for about five minutes to see your first street walker. In Amsterdam and Germany, street walking is illegal and enforced. In thailand, it is somewhat illegal and almost never enforced. Not to mention that Thailand has more lower class citizens than Germany and Netherland combined have people, and it also has a much less sophisticated po0lice force than Germany or the Netherlands, so a black market is going to go longer unchecked in Thailand. It is a simple matter of economics from a human trafficker's point of view.
Even assuming, though, that you were correct, an unenforceable ban against all prostitution is not a solution against human trafficking. It would be similar to solve illegal gun sales and alcohol sales by banning guns and alcohol.
As far as Amsterdam having illegal prostitution, if that is true, their police force must be the dumbest anywhere. I have been there within the past few months and seen the "meat market" of their red light district first hand. They do not hide anything about their intentions to prostitute.
Now, if you mean it is illegal outside of the red light district, that is true, and it always has been, as far as I know.
Still the numbers from HRI and other similar organizations show fairly conclusively that legalized prostitution significantly reduces sexual crime rates.

Easy to say you have the biggest house on the block if you have never walked around the block...
send the Red Thread to Thailand for a year... they'll change their mind quickly.

I THINK THE JOHN'S SHOULD BE PUBLICLY HUMILIATED. AND THERE WIVES OR GIRLFRIENDS SHOULD BE NOTIFIED. WHY SHOULD THEY GET OFF SO EASY. WHAT THEY DID IS DISGUSTING.
Posted by: DAWN TERRY | May 7, 2007 11:52:29 PM
I think that if they have wives then they could still be notified.
If the guy is single and the girl is single then I don't see a much bigger moral issue than a typical week of activities at a Spring Break outing. Use a condom and try not to be careless and I am not sure why the law comes into it.
I see it for street walkers, because you don't want your kids seeing that. But if I am single and I call an escort and I go over to her place , I think that should be ok by the law.

"In Amsterdam, the Red Thread and the Head of the Greens stated, "there is no longer legalized prostitution in Amsterdam, It is all illegal.""
Here is a quote from the Red Thread's website: "Since October 2000 it is legal to operate a brothel, provided the owners and managers comply with labour regulations and to the conditions that local authorities set for obtaining a licence."
I think it is you who should read a bit more, and you can start here:
