'Brilliant' Identity Theft Scheme Targets Child Porn Buyers
June 15, 2007 10:48 AM
A ring of European cybercriminals has devised an ingenious scheme that steals the credit card information of Internet buyers of child pornography, law enforcement sources say.
Officials call it a "brilliant" system because victims rarely complain for fear of being identified as a child porn purchaser.
Authorities say an ongoing investigation centers around an east European crime ring that operates numerous child pornography Web sites.
When a person attempts to purchase access to the sites, they are directed to a bogus payment processor page and instructed to enter their credit card information, including CVC code and expiration date.
Investigators say the criminal ring uses the credit card information to purchase new child pornography domain names and ISP hosting spaces.
When victims discover the fraud, instead of reporting it to law enforcement, they typically just pay the charge and report the card lost or stolen, officials say.
Targeting international child pornography and cybercrime rings has become a growing priority for U.S. law enforcement.
"Part of our work is to secure our nation's boundaries, and we see making the Internet safe as an important component of that," said Pat Reilly, spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In a recent high-profile case, the leaders of a Belarus-based child pornography and money laundering enterprise were brought to justice after being lured by undercover law enforcement agents to western European countries with extradition treaties with the U.S. The ICE-led investigation resulted in the arrest of more than 1,200 individuals worldwide.

This is one scheme that law enforcement should ignore and let the child molesters get what is coming to them.

I agreee!!!!!!

Except that the stolen funds are going to finance further exploitation...

Please re-read the article. The scammers are already running child porn sites, and they are using the stolen IDs to create more.
Posted by: jb | Jun 15, 2007 1:03:20 PM
The main problem is that these criminals could use ANYONE's credit card information gotten from any random internet source and attach it to their schemes. Then innocent people would be caught up in the mess, and it would appear they purchased pornography or set up a website, but in fact they had not. That is why you cannot just assume the people being victimized here are 'child molesters'. They may very well be innocent people that were dragged into the situation by virtue of their credit card number being used without their permission.

Let's me get this straight. You would rather see child molesters walking the streets with a little bit less money than have them in jail where they can do no harm? Pretty simple thinking if you ask me.

Purchasing child porn doesn't mean you're a molestor, there is a subtle difference.
Posted by: anonymous | Jun 15, 2007 1:28:56 PM
the russian mafia gas scam in california netted thousands of credit card information from pump card readers that was then passed on to blank cards to purchase more gas from other stations which then sold the stolen gas to unsuspecting customers who then had there card info stolen as well.
many of these cards wound up somehow making online purchases in eastern block nations via the internet.
buying gas in omaha or boston, can get you a life sentence when your card gets hi-jacked. pay with cash.

If your paying for child porn you are paying someone to molest a child so you can watch. You are a molester.
Posted by: anonymous | Jun 15, 2007 1:53:18 PM
I don't unerstand why Law enforcement agencies don't run the same scam. Get the perverts and put them in prison.
These perverts by attempting to purchase child pornography are feeding the industry which means children are abused

Don't tell Bush, he might try and start a war in Eastern Europe
Posted by: James Martinez | Jun 15, 2007 2:57:29 PM
Maybe Bush should start the war on illegal aliens instead of welcoming them with open arms.
Posted by: bodabing | Jun 15, 2007 3:11:17 PM
as the saying goes, 'What Comes around Goes around" these people are getting exactly what's coming. This seems to be a step up from selling fake pirated DVDs.

Bush already started that war James,, its called the 'War on Drugs'. Ever since the US (pharms through the DEA)got Mexico involved in fighting that war, the people have been fleeing to this side in hopes of escaping the violence. I kinda skimmed those topics about Mexican officals finding severed heads in their government offices too..
Off topic sorry, just wanted to say, I LOVE the idea of this kind of justice, right or wrong. BUT,,, if these folks get their ID's stolen and lose their credit (justice served IMO) what exactly does everyone think that will push these sick minds to do in order to maintain their own comfort levels? (financially) My guess would be go steal mine or your identity. Not sure if this should be ignored or not.... good in theory but. Oh heck, Iv seen 3 articles today about ID info being stolen from states, governement offices and even the IRS loosing hundreds of computers to theft with ID info on them. The whole ID/Credit system is falling apart globally by the look of it. I feel a dark age coming on ack..

This really is a brilliant way of catching these creeps that are turned on by our children. Instead of common thieves coming up with and using the idea (that apparently works) i think our law enforcement agencies should have a similar program in place to catch these creeps. I also give a high 5 to the Dateline stings that captured 100's of would-be child molesters. Every state should have both these kinds of programs in place nationwide. It would help save 1000's of young lives from being destroyed.....

So let me get this start, they steal info from unsuspecting child porn watchers and make more child porno sites. I don't see how that is justice in anyway. They are feeding back into the smut that the law enforcement is trying to control.

Good crooks. Run the child molesters into bankruptcy.
Posted by: yankee | Jun 15, 2007 6:02:03 PM
Air should be illegal if these pedophiles breathe it. I threw out a housemate four years ago for non-payment of rent and stealing from me. He is now doing three years to life, with mandatory life on parole here in Colorado, for sexual assault on a child. Yes, he was into kiddie porn, too. I don't approve at all of what the crooks did with the stolen money, but the thought of human cockroaches like my ex-housemate getting ripped off and being unable to go to police warms my heart.

why didn't i think of this!

Hopefully, someday in the future; torture, and the death penalty will be the consequences of being a pedophile.
Posted by: mike | Jun 15, 2007 10:02:36 PM
This may end up stopping child porn on the internet, a pediphile can't win.

Is there a reason (other than ratings) that you are sharing this information publicly? Your "ingenious/brilliant scheme" seems to have been exposed to the public. Do you think that you would catch MORE criminals if you didn't "leak" your information to the press to boost your ratings? SOME criminals in the world are not stupid (they're likely the ones you should watch out for). The Internet is wide open - why would you "spill" this information all over the net in such a way????
Posted by: CSilver | Jun 18, 2007 12:13:55 AM
Csilver - my bet would be that the people being arrested are way down the pecking order in the gangs and the real villans are still living in luxury. The real answer probably lies in improving technology and banking security - something which is possible -witness trials of hardware dongles for internet bank access in the UK - but expensive for the banks. Until the cost of theft exceeds the cost of protection then don't expect much improvement.
Posted by: Kiwijonathan | Jun 18, 2007 7:14:25 AM
Oh, come ON, already. This is more than absurd; it is insulting!
Yeah, secret teams of bombers headed for the US and UK are announced to a room full of potential spies and infiltrators so they can be conveniently reported on to the sheep, I mean the citizens.
Posted by: Jim | Jun 18, 2007 9:44:56 PM
Hmmm! These thieves should be given a job at Interpol/the FBI! Let's sic them on al Quaeda!

AMEN to the death penalty for these Child Porn SICKOS
How DARE anyone hurt a child!!
It makes me fumin' mad.

If a pedophile steals someone elses card and uses it, then the wrong person is victimized by this scam.
Posted by: Lisa | Jun 22, 2007 4:49:20 PM
All of the above responses are--to my mind--VERY VINDICTIVE; it's easy to understand why. What is NOT understood is the reason for people's behavior to look at the stuff---whether it be 'kiddie porn' or other. It is indicative to me of a personality that DESPERATELY needs treatment and deep
compassion. I don't hear ONE WORD OF THAT expressed above. Do you want them DEAD??
Posted by: Robert Twynham | Jun 22, 2007 6:44:21 PM
I posted my comment above. The pedophiles without doubt, are people with a psycho-sexual illness. would you kill anyone else in this society of a similar crime? I hope not. To my mind, what's needed is the righting of wrongs, and an enormous amount of COMPASSION and understanding..WHY did this happen--to begin with?? It's an illness.
Posted by: Robert Twynham | Jun 22, 2007 6:55:05 PM
Robert, yes these people probably have an illness, but that in no way excuses their crimes, nor does it mean that compassion and understanding is called for. It's a fact that the majority of sexual child abusers do not benefit from rehabilitation attempts. I'm glad there are people out there like you who are willing to help abusers stop molesting children, but you'll be fighting an almost impossible uphill battle in that regard. The rest of us will just call them what they are - the lowest form of criminal and deserving of extreme punishment.
