Federal Probe of Congressman Ends, Lawyers Say

June 06, 2007 5:55 PM

Federal_probe_o_mn A Justice Department probe into allegations a former Republican congressman engaged in sexually harassing behavior with minors has ended, according to the lawmaker and his lawyers.

The eight-month investigation reportedly focused on a 1996 trip to the Grand Canyon former Congressman Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., took with his sister and two teenaged former pages.

Last fall, one of the pages complained to a reporter of "fawning, petting and touching" by the congressman during the trip and said he was "creeped out" by it.

Sources say the investigation later expanded to cover other allegations. Kolbe maintained all the allegations against him were untrue.

In a statement released by his lawyers, Kolbe said he was "thankful" for the Justice Department's "objective review" of the matter. Its decision to close the investigation was "powerful evidence" that the allegations against him were wrong, Kolbe said.

The Justice Department referred inquiries to the Arizona U.S. Attorney's Office.  A spokesman there declined to comment on the matter.

Kolbe spent more than $120,000 from his old campaign war chest on legal bills during the course of the investigation, public records show.

The false charges were useful for the 2006 election and account for the size of the Democratic victory. The information was around for more than a year before, but the public release was timed just before the election to influence it. The Democrats can outsmart Karl Rove sometimes, but not often.

It's interesting that the Justice Department didn't release findings, and had no comment. The investigation just "ended".

I want a report about what they found.

I think having women in office have dumbed down the politics! Everything has to be touchy/feely!
