New Taliban Leader Had Been in Afghan Custody; Released in Hostage Deal
June 20, 2007 12:01 PM
The Taliban military commander who led the "graduation ceremony" for 300 suicide bombers was one of five men released from an Afghanistan prison earlier this year in exchange for a kidnapped Italian journalist.
On the tape, Dadullah, whose notoriously brutal brother was killed by the U.S. last month, introduces and congratulates new teams of suicide bombers as he sends them off to conduct suicide missions in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Germany.
"These Americans, Canadians, British and Germans come here to Afghanistan from faraway places," Dadullah says on the tape. "Why shouldn't we go after them?"
THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS
Dadullah has been quite busy since his release. He reportedly organized the deal to obtain his brother's dead body for burial in exchange for the release of four medical workers.
Dadullah also received a condolence letter from Osama bin Laden following the death of his brother.
Journalist Daniel Mastrogiacomo was kidnapped along with his interpreter and driver by Taliban fighters in early March.
A hostage trade was negotiated, in part by an Italian-run hospital organization, for his release in exchange for the release of five senior Taliban commanders that were in the custody of the Afghan federal government.
The deal was harshly criticized at the time, and protests took place in front of the Italian-run hospital.
Mastrogiacomo's driver and interpreter, who were not included in the exchange, were both beheaded.
Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

When Daniel Mastrogiacomo was released in exhange for the freedom of Dadullah, among others, I said that was a big mistake. Why even negotiate with these guys? The Italians screwed up by pushing the deal, and letting this guy out (did they think he was just going to go get a job at the local tea shop after being freed?)
When somebody says, "I am going to kill you", do not negotiate with them; it does more harm than good...

Leave it to the bleeding heart Liberals, they would all be released....unreal, people just don't get it. We need Fred for pres...not Hilary...GOD HELP US

Boy, sure looks like Italy has egg on its face!

The only way to deal with those Islamic extremist is death to all of them and every single blood line and off springs. Doesn't anybody understand they all want us dead or under their sword? Let the CIA or the U.S. Military torture them to save a thousand of American, so what's the big deal if we torture those jihadist, I think we should let the Chinese do the torturing for the U.S. they do a better job.

I am sick of sacrificing the lives of Americans for these ungrateful people in the middle east. Enough already. Lets bring our children home and let them kill each other.

All the Western Europeans - Spanish, Italians, French, and Germans - have already surrendered to the terrorists.

Why did Bin Laden have to send his condolences?? Didn't this dumdullah dude die "for the cause"? Wouldn't he be considered a martyr or does he have to strap a bomb to himself and kill himself for that to happen?
BIG dummies.
Posted by: Enn Eff | Jun 20, 2007 2:19:49 PM
Andy, it's a bit more complicated than that, and I think you know it...the US withdrew it's interests from Afghanistan after the Soviet pullout, and look what eventually transpired there...and ultimately transpired in Manhattan and Arlington.
Unfortunately, force and regional development is required to protect energy interests in the region. That's energy that YOU consume on a daily basis, and could not live without UNTIL the US loses it's dependency on this energy (petroleum).
oh well...

How pathetic are they that they just let him go.they should have known who he was!!!! And to the person named TRIANGE ONE..... We are not sacrificing any live 99.99% of the soldiers over there have said if we leave now we will be letting down our country and the people here who were helping. and it is not like they are made to join the millitary they choose to cuz they like it

Better get all the flight manifests from all over Europe and start questioning people with passports from or to any mideast countries starting with the kids up. Can't assume it is just Muslims or young men anymore who want to blow Americans up. The fact that Ali-C4 hasn't blown anyone up yet is a miracle.
Posted by: Bob | Jun 20, 2007 2:35:29 PM
Now exactly how is the liberal media responsible for this? Except maybe if these journalists are too stupid to realize that they are putting themselves in harms way if they go to these countries. If they go to those countries voluntarily and get kidnapped, it's their own fault. STAY OUT. DUH. Now we have a terrorist released from custody because of some idiot. Liberal, conservative or whatever, going there is DUMB DUMB DUMB.
Posted by: BigT | Jun 20, 2007 2:35:44 PM
I guess this guy is an extremist muslim because of the liberal media.
This extremist muslim looks at the US and sees and sees extremist right wing politics led by the Christians and supported by a kill-all the middle easterns militiary and he may as well be looking in the mirror...the only difference is the religion.

When you make a deal with the Devil - it comes back to bite you in the *##. Now when one of these "graduates" blows himself up - we can thank Italy.
Posted by: Gene | Jun 20, 2007 3:00:23 PM
Let's all write to George W Bush and ask him why we authorized the release of Dadullah? The Afgans wouldn't even fart without his approval.
Posted by: Chuck | Jun 20, 2007 3:00:39 PM
Seems the Italians are now reaping what they sowed.
Posted by: Jupmod | Jun 20, 2007 3:02:10 PM
If any news organization from any country are afraid of being kidnapped, don't go!! This is a great example that you can't negotiate with these animals. There goal is to Kill all of us or convert. The next time a journalist gets kidnapped, O-well--- wrong place, wrong time.
Just think, trade a journalist in a war zone for a known killer!!!!
Posted by: brian | Jun 20, 2007 3:11:15 PM
exchange a known killer for journalist. God help all of us, what's next a lawyer
Posted by: brian | Jun 20, 2007 3:13:29 PM
Did you guys get his statement of "These Americans, Canadians, British and Germans come here to Afghanistan from faraway places, Why shouldn't we go after them?"
Maybe the statement "We fight them over there so we won't have to fight them over here." is really incorrect. And we just to dumb to realize it.
Posted by: Roy | Jun 20, 2007 3:14:42 PM
As a fan of irony it would only be appropriate for the first wave of suicide bombers to hit Italy...
Posted by: triptriptripleb | Jun 20, 2007 3:14:55 PM
I am pretty sure that this was just a staged piece of propoganda. However, just in case I have pencilled 07/07/07 in my diary.
We'll find out then if I am right or wrong. If I am wrong, a lot of people are going to die because we allowed our political leaders in the US and the UK to takt their eye off the ball and invade Iraq before the job in Afghanistan was finished.
Posted by: Chris | Jun 20, 2007 3:30:15 PM
The best policy is to just kill them when we capture them, that way they can't bargain by kidnapping other and using them as barganing chips. I think we should also burn the bodies, since it offends them so much to have their dead burned (they believe they won't reach heaven if they are cremated), so maybe they will try to stop reaching heaven so bad by suicide bombing. We have to make it in such a way that they fear suicide bombing and death.

3 words>DROP>THE>BOMB!
Posted by: nick | Jun 20, 2007 3:51:08 PM
What does 07/07/07 have to do with this triptriptripleb? I think I missed something or is this just your thinking of the next most obvious date?
I think this whole thing is frightening that our homeland security department is taking this so lightly! five years ago they would have had every airport, bus station, train station, and sea port already on high alert at just a chrip from a radio in the middle east! Are we already so comfortable?
Posted by: Sean | Jun 20, 2007 4:00:05 PM
You all can whine like babies but this will never end, unless we understand that invading other countries and provoking them to attack us isn't the solution we are the aggressors making them come at us, we should defend ourselves here in our homeland(USA) and make peace with everyone around us not hate us, Wars will go on until we open our eyes and push ourselves out of the corner and make amend with the world instead of being the AGGressor.
Posted by: Jericho | Jun 20, 2007 4:09:38 PM
when we attack these lunatics we must do so without mercy or hesitation. please, these are uneducated fanatics who must br killed by the bushell. the US should utilize the largest FUEL-AIR bombs we can muster so when we drop them on a training camp they are all wiped out in one clean swoop - whether in pakistan or afganistan. lets take some old US missile submarines and outfit their missiles with massive F-A payloads. either we mean business or we dont!!!

livestock observer, maybe you can revise the "all of you" part...maybe you can also post something that's relevant here...
Posted by: Jazz | Jun 20, 2007 5:13:47 PM
hey, livestock. why dont you go spend some tourist dollars over in afganistan. when those lunatics catch you, dont bother screaming for mercy. you won't be heard over the gurgling of your blood from your carved throat or the cracking of your neck bones as they happily saw away chanting "god is great". i wonder what your facial expression would be as they held up your severed head. perhaps a look of surprise???
Posted by: james | Jun 20, 2007 5:18:49 PM
I like the comment about letting the Chinese deal with these Islamic lunatics. Remember Iraqi Al-qaeda didn't dare cutting off a Chinese hostage's head some time back? That's fear against fear. If the Chinese caught a terrorist not only they chop him up right on spot but they also behead 9 generations of his. Terrorize that!

All of you talk about the journalist being freed... but none of you talk about the afghan driver and translator.. why? were they not important? wouldn't any government have exchanged a prisoner for them? NO..NO,NO,NO!
I feel ashamed to be an american right now. We start wars that we can't fight, we kill people ( over a million people because of the two wars) and no one pays for it. not bush, not rumsfeild, not Rice, not Powell. why is that? This nation is the Great Babalon from the book of revelations. "Nations will drink from her cup and indulge in all the sins of men." Hmmmmm.....
ITS NOT GOD BLESS US... ITS MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON OUR SOULS!!!

The only way we are going to end this crisis of terrorism is to do the same thing to these people that Truman did to Japan. Until these people feel pain they will not understand. Ask the Japanese what they were going to do to Americans before the big drop. It's not pleasant, but only extremes will work in these cases. Yes some innocent die, but how many of our innocent must die first before something is really done. You cannot negociate with hate, you have to kill it.

They probably had to let him go so as not to hurt his feelings. Or worse - he could have been held as a result of . . . profiling! That sub human should be in hell with his brother slap dancing on hot coals.

Leftest again. Reading, I learned that Afghanistan as never known peace. In my 50 plus years of life, there has always been violence in the Middle East. I think is may be the result of tribalism in the past. I don't know. I'm sure some conservative drop out like Limbaugh knows. He knows more than god almighty. I don't understand hornet behavior. I have figured out kicking a nest of hornet will get me stung. I don't know why a white man isn't safe walking down some of the streets of Oakland a night. I don't walk those streets to prove my right to walk them. What did we think would happen in the Middle East if we invaded? If this guy isn't out trying to kill Americans, more American haters are being recruited daily. This is a good argument to invest the money we are wasting trying to bomb these people in to liking us and develop technologies to leave these people happy and isolated where they are free murder each other without our intervention. The best way to screw these folks is to cut them off. I don't care if they have running water, power, lights, schools or food. Conservatives won't spend money to make East LA, Washington DC or any other American city violence free. They think we can make the street of Baghdad safe.

you have got to be kidding me. Comparing the brutality done in the name of Allah to Christians or Jews for that matter is laughable. Even now, look at all the riots over rushdie being knighted because he wrote a book. how many anti-christian books have been written, especially recently - yet you don't hear Christians issuing fatwas and death threats. And look at all the anti-jewish stuff spouted every single day on Islamic media, yet amazingly the jews aren't taking to the streets and strapping on bomb belts. No in fact all Israel does is keep talking about the 'peace process' and the west keeps trying to send peace envoys. peace peace peace, thats all the west wants. while death death death is all the middle east muslims offer. The complete hypocrisy of the 'victim' stance that muslims like to take just blows my mind. do they truly not see the despairing depths of their own hypocrisy?

Question:
Why arent all you war mongers joining the military to carry out youer violent fantasies? Are you cowards? Or just trash talkers?
Posted by: Rush Limurger | Jun 21, 2007 10:57:00 AM
Aside from the warlords and the politicians, the people in these countries already live in a hellish atmosphere compared to what we are used to in America. Their only real hope is to die for their god and enter paradise. Making their lives more hellish only enforces their desire to die for their cause.
Posted by: Schuh | Jun 21, 2007 1:01:33 PM
Rush, there is a HUGE difference between being a "war monger" and being proactive and in charge of your own defense. I don't think that killing somebody who has threatened to kill you has anything to do with a "violent fantasy" The last time suicide bomber struck the US, I saw it with my own eyes...I breathed in the smell of toxins and dead people for months. Why would you want that to happen again?
And btw, what is the verb for monger, mong?! Let's go mong some war...yeah...yippeee...
Posted by: Jazz | Jun 21, 2007 1:36:02 PM
Jericho, you've got to be kidding. It seems as if you are saying "If we just stay home and all close our eyes, they'll go away". Do you really think they're going to leave us alone?
Do you really believe that 9/11 wasn't in the planning stages before GW got elected? Are you that naive?
Posted by: Disillusioned (former?) Republican | Jun 21, 2007 4:27:47 PM
Schuh, real hope lies in economic self-sufficiency and self determination (which is exactly what is being attempted in Afghanistan right now). This small segment of the population of that country does not want this type of progress, and wants to revert to a traditional, conservative theocracy...THAT will make the lives of most Afghans "hellish"...
Posted by: Jazz | Jun 22, 2007 12:20:00 PM
Why does the right wing always use these forems to spew hate for the "liberal media" and lefties ingeneral? Hello, this story is about Italians! Perhaps if you all stopped hating long enough to read and think you wouldn't have been duped into voting for a draft dodger instead of the war hero!
Posted by: born_7-4 | Jun 22, 2007 3:23:53 PM
Actually, born on the 4th, the story is about Italians, Americans, Canadians, British, Germans, and Afghans.
I agree with you, though..."conservatives" and "liberals" seem to have no better way to voice themselves than to verbally assault each other. UNTIL a common enemy attacks and kills a group that contains both, then they find that their differences are actually smaller than they had thought...
Posted by: Jazz | Jun 26, 2007 2:07:57 PM
Just reason enough to kill all these bastards on the battlefield. No prisoners. We cannot take a chance that some moron will release them. Kill them!!!!!!!
Posted by: Ed Stanowicz | Jun 26, 2007 2:59:43 PM
Right on Andy!!! Bring our people home from these countries who don't want us there anyway. Let them kill each other if that's what they want to do.
However, we must remember that should all our people come home, there are not enough job to support them and we have sent so much of our money to foreign places to help them that our government can't afford to pay our service people once they do come home.
Once again it's all about money. If we leave Iraq we won't get their oil. And I still have no clue why we are still in Afganistan. They have their own government now and it seems to be working pretty well. Why are we still interfering?
