Al Qaeda Cell in the U.S. Or On Its Way, According to New Intel
July 10, 2007 6:30 PM
Senior U.S. intelligence officials tell ABC News new intelligence suggests a small al Qaeda cell is on its way to the United States, or may already be here.
The White House has convened an urgent multi-agency meeting for Thursday afternoon to deal with the new threat.
THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS
Top intelligence and law enforcement officials have been told to assemble in the Situation Room to report on:
--what steps can be taken to minimize or counter the threat,
--and what steps are being taken to harden security for government buildings and personnel.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the Chicago Tribune editorial board on Tuesday he had "a gut feeling" that an attack was coming.
"We do worry about whether they are rebuilding their capabilities," Chertoff said. "We strike at them; we degrade them; but they rebuild."
"It suggests they have information that the cell or cells coming this direction want to attack a government facility," Brad Garrett, a former FBI agent and ABC News consultant, said.
Law enforcement officials say the recent failed attacks in London have provided important new clues about possible tactics.
Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage.
And officials say the London attackers' use of the Internet left important clues that are being used to decode other e-mails that had initially been deemed unimportant but are now taking on new significance.
A senior administration official said the level of concern of a new terror attack is now higher than it has been in some time, and the meeting this week in the situation room is one of a number that have been convened in light of the new intelligence and what happened in London.

"World News" closer between Charles Gibson and Brian Ross:
Charles Gibson: The obvious question, Brian, is how hard and how specific is the intelligence?
Brian Ross: Not hard, but good. It's being taken very seriously, in connection with increased chatter, e-mail traffic back and forth, the attacks in London, and a general concern, as Secretary Chertoff said today, that summer seems to be a time that al Qaeda likes to attack.
Charles Gibson: And there's been a bunch of tapes that have been coming from al Qaeda lately.
Brian Ross: In fact, Zawahri put out his eighth tape today and says he had easy access to the Internet, and he threatened new attacks against London.
Charles Gibson: Once was the day when this intelligence came in, they would raise the level of concern going to a different color.
Brian Ross: The concern, now, by doing that and not telling Americans what they can do, where the attack is coming, serves no useful purpose.
_______________________________________
White House response:
After the attempted terrorist attacks in the U.K., the U.S. government convened meetings to discuss the situation -- that is what citizens should expect. There is no credible evidence of an imminent threat, however, and counter-terrorism officials regularly meet -- that is not unusual. We are taking all threats seriously and working to ensure we can keep the terrorists from striking at innocent people.

Just a ratings scare story is all it is.

little rabbits....Where's the CREDIBLE EVIDENCE ?????
Posted by: Leprkin | Jul 10, 2007 6:51:15 PM
Sure, the report was probably put together by the Bush administration in an effort to take away more of our civil rights. Nothing this president does would surprise me. Yeah, look it's a terrorist... now let us record your phone calls and emails. Bush sucks!

Suspicious timing, anyone? Based on all the crap that has come out on this adminstration in the last few weeks, the cynic in me sees this as yet another attempt by the administration to scare and distract the American public from the real issues at home and abroad: GW's own party deserting his position on the war, the Libby fiasco, the ex-surgeon general's statements about politics trumping science, the billions we are pouring into the war each month, etc.

1. close the borders. no one gets in.
2. if you love this country, then fight for this country. otherwise get out.
3. if you want a life in this country, earn it. get a job.
4. if you want to be protected from harm. earn it. get a job. there's more than one way to get a job.
5. if you want to vote, earn it. become a citizen. then get a job.
6. if you want to keep this country going so that you can be free. earn it.
7. if you don't like the laws, vote to have them changed.
8. everyone better get their heads out of the sand, because it's gonna take us to make things better in this country.
9. As for the administration...if you would make an effort at minding our own country's business instead of trying to rule the world, maybe terrorist crap this wouldn't happen. All you're doing is being a bully to rest of the world. If another country has issues, they should be responsible for taking care of it. Hell, we have to solve our own issues when something happens to us. I don't ever see another country coming to aide when there is a flood or earthquake or such.
Anyone else agree ???
Oh and by the way... a word to the terrorists... There was a Japanese Officer during the attack on Pearl Harbor that said he was worried that they just woke a sleeping giant after the attack had happened. Learn a lesson from history. Why test the patience of the only country in the world that used nukes on foreign soil ? is it so hard to learn something like that ?
Posted by: Todd | Jul 10, 2007 6:58:04 PM
It may be that the Bush Goverment in order to reestablish some credibility has created this threat over the people and make the people of this country to live in a constant fear of a terrorist attack that may never happens again, if this is the case, then we are waesting our resources with so many airports check points and invading people phones calls.

Do we need another attack in order to CLOSE THE BORDERS?
I'm sorry, but the only people who should be allowed in the United States are people who are born in the United States.
Drastic times call for drastic measures.

Maybe the $12 billion a month being spent on the Iraq debacle would be better securing our own borders and hiring more police.
Posted by: Wendy | Jul 10, 2007 7:04:12 PM
Sounds like things aren't going Bush and Cheney's way so it's time for scare tactics again! You know it's real funny Al-Qaeda wasn't even in Iraq til Bush started his war there. Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein hated each other...and saddam had most insurgents at bay at the corner of Iraq. Who are these insurgents...they are not all Al_Qaeda...I read only 2% were Al-Qaeda..We should impeah these monsters....Bring our soldiers home....and watch it all disappear

It is time to END this war, but crushing them once and for all, enough. IF they dare attack us again on this soil, libs watch out, shock and awe will have a whole new meaning..Give them hell W. Americans WAKE UP

Time for Bush to take another three month vacation at his rancho, like he did when he was specifically warned about 9/11.
Posted by: wilder5121 | Jul 10, 2007 7:10:46 PM
What is it going to take for us to close our borders? This is ridiculous. Any other country would never put up with this crap. It's time we start focusing on our own country's problems and stop jumping in to help other countries who beg for our help and then thumb their noses at us after we've given it. We are rapidly becoming a laughingstock around the world. And to Jurist...I'm with you all the way!! Enough is enough.

Posted by: DXO | Jul 10, 2007 7:14:12 PM
leprkin and jurist have said it all. I never saw a President so hell-bent on this war. He was in my neck of the woods today (Cleveland) and I couldn't believe some of his comments. When are people going to wake up to the fact that he is and has been pushing his own personal agenda since he took office. Sick of this administration and can't believe he was voted in for the second term. Canada is looking better and better!

Remember that little bill that Mr. Bush signed in May that states he can take over the government in a national emergency? Of course not, the MSM didn't cover it. Bet he puts that into effect. Puts the elections on hold perhaps. I knew this was coming as soon as I heard that he signed that bill. Maybe Brian can find the bill. Why else would Bush sign something like that in to law unless he intended to use it?
Posted by: fubarw | Jul 10, 2007 7:16:25 PM
and so now the bush administration and its head - the back end of a donkey who calls himself the decider - will decide that it is too dangerous to hold elections and will declare himself president(?) for life and if you think that's a farfetched theory, think again.
Posted by: Louise Hyson | Jul 10, 2007 7:16:50 PM
It is sad that they pushed this to the media, and Brian accepted the story without considering that, regardless of the veracity, it was a timed release to deflect the current cycle of very bad Iraq/GOP defections news.
Does anyone in public life have the ability to speak to the truth about the way these terror threat stories are timed?
Sad, Sad, Sad, but your gonna be fine....
Posted by: blogofacowboy | Jul 10, 2007 7:21:55 PM
I am so sick of the anti-american jerks that frequent and post comments on this web site.
If the media/gov't reports potential terror then it is a grand conspiracy/scare tactic. On the other hand, if the media/gov't does not warn about an attack and something happens then it is used to show unprepared we are and how the gov't/media is incompetent.
Grow up morons! Future attacks are inevitable. It is not a scare tactic!
I find it sickening for those Americans who live in their small and quiet towns and cities (e.g., on the left coast) who have not been touched by terror to any degree to constantly preach about how the war on terror is a joke. Easy to say when you don't live in or near a city with a giant bullseye on it (i.e., NYC or DC).

Boy, on it's way from where? If we had our borders secure this would not be an issue, however; this damn administration cant get it's head out of its butt to see that the threat, if any, is not in Iraq, it's here and we need to start securing our borders, putting more cops on the street and start funding our efforts here, not in Iraq.
If anything were to happen here, our police agencies can't afford the equipment or staff to do anything about it. Basically we are screwed! Thanks Bush, you're the best.

This government is a joke. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this country as much as the next patriot, but we as Americans deserve better. It's really sad. Where is Jack Bauer when you need him?!?

I swear most of these people we are getting in office are coming from the pond scum underneath the deepest pit of dirt.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Take it how you will, but war is war and politics are politics we are chin-deep in each.
We could close the borders, but that won't change the focus on terrorist activities only immigration. We could just pull out of Iraq immediately or drop a nuke on them, but then what? Perhaps if those who make the decisions and rules could answer that....
Posted by: Tina | Jul 10, 2007 7:27:39 PM
Close the borders? Yeah right. Yes we can do what we can, but it's impossible to "close the borders". Are we going to patrol and watch all 12,000 miles of border? Above and below ground? Can't be done. And sooner or later there will be another terrorist attack - the Bush administration has done nothing to prevent it. Not only have they made the threat worse, but they blew hundreds of billions doing it. Money that could have been spent or realistic security - e.g., port security.
Posted by: johno | Jul 10, 2007 7:28:42 PM
This is news? It would be naive to think a cell isn't already here. Several have already struck here so this should be no surprise. We even have American citizens (Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, Unibomber - presumably) who are terrorists.

What are you talking about? Putting the elections on hold? The elections are a year and a half away sister!
This is a real threat. AND It is really timed within a window of a few days, to benefit the administration.
For some reason they (and apparently ABC News) care nothing for their own failing credibility, even when people like Carol and Todd go crazy hating nuts over it.
And the other guy who blames Clinton for terrorism? Dude you are nothing more than proof that this shallow thinking manipulation of media works!

So, they waited & re-planed to do it with air planes! They did it!

Shucks, they didn't even have a meeting after they got the memo: "Osama bin Laden Determined to Strike in US".
After that memo, they just went back to golf and "clearing brush" with a pat on the head of the person who delivered the memo and a brusk "You've covered yourself, now get out" (from GWB). No meetings or anything.
And THESE people we're supposed to trust to protect us? PUH-LEASE.

Call me a cynic, but these alarmist "news" stories are counterproductive. Terrorists are trying to hit us each and every day and making it an "exclusive" news story is akin to stating, in bold typeface splashed across the front page, that years of research have determined that our lives are finite. Really?!?! Tell us something we don't already know.
Far as I'm concerned, this is yet another example of "senior intelligence" trying to bring "the People" back to the days when we, "the People," found Bush and Cheney somewhat remotely competent.
What fools we were to believe in this sham of an administration!
Posted by: Deputy_Bob | Jul 10, 2007 7:37:46 PM
You can be sure the "Senior U.S. intelligence officials" are not actually in the intelligence business, but are croneys of Cheney or Rumsfeld (forgotten, but not gone) who are stove-piping and cherry-picking the facts to suit their plans and then feeding the toxic sludge to ABC so they can put it out there as "truth" without so much as a "why should we believe YOU, NOW?"

You people all make me sick. Why don't you do something for your country instead of sitting at home on your sofa complaining about the president. You aren't in oversees fighting. I don't think you will hear any of the soldiers who are complaining about the president. If you really want to blame someone, why not go back and start from the time it started while Clinton was in office. Bush had just become president when 9 11 happened. Clinton being too busy with his women didn't protect the country nor did his goverment. At least Bush knows what's out there and he's trying to do something about it and all for a country that has idiots sitting on their chairs at home safe and secure, belittleing everything he does. I'm surprised he don't just say to hell with it and let you take care of yourself. But I don't think any of the armed services would be there with you in that case. Grow up. Support your country and the president that we elected.

Well, if the Dems would have given us a candidate who has both a backbone AND common sense, then we Bush would have been gone. I thought Obama was going to save us all and unite us, but he only wants to run for the hills when threatened (he thinks this is Sweden), and Hillary? Please, we had a Clinton and two Bushes- can't we move on America? We can do better.
Why has America forgotten 9/11 and the innocent victims of Islamic extremism? They want you dead, America, so if you want to appease them, look the other way and pretend it is 1960. Citizens have been buying bottled water for over five years now. [I ran out of money for duck tape].
We've been watching the terror alert scale go up and down and up and down. Bin Laden is still in hiding. Al Qaeda has entered Iraq, since the conflict there started and our troops are still dying in Iraq, Therefore, this news does not surprise me.

Were off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of OZ, because because because....because of the idiot silly stuff he does......Come on Toto, you can pull away the curtain now and see Cheney manipulating the Bushmeiseter. What a fraud and what timing too...

To all you cynics out there..remember 911. Hope you dont think these guys all packed up and went back to the hills.Look what Timothy McVea was able to pull off. I think these guys are as smart as he was.

What scares me is not whether this story is true - I doubt that it is. What scares me is the fact that someone has the goal of scaring Americans into feeling they will soon be under attack. Is that to cover some impending domestic plot that will then be conveniently blamed on al Qaeda (and then linked to Iran)?
We're getting tired of these games. Scare, fake "attack", "retaliatory" attack. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Just remember folks, this sick administration can allow an incident to happen (may not even be Al Queida) just to try and prove the threat is real. There is nothing too low for them to do - so beware! They need a diversion because the blogs are 90% anti this administration and they need to hone in on us. They want Congress to get off their backs too, so voila, they create a threat. How convenient!

It's the Dems fault, this wouldnt be happening if Bush's ratings weren't in the toilet. If there is an attack you can bet that Bush/Cheney/Rove is in back of it.That's the only way they can control the ignorant masses.

CLOSE OU8R BORDERS !
OUR COUNTRY HAS BECOME TO FREE !!
Posted by: Stormy | Jul 10, 2007 7:56:10 PM
America, America, America! What have you become? Foreign policy bordering on international armed robbery. Health care that is really sickness care. Debt, personal and public, the highest per capita worldwide. Education that isn't. Crumbling transportation infrastructure. Honorable military personnel led by a moron C.I.C., and three branches of government that are so corrupt as to beggar belief. And now, "booga-booga, big bad al-Qaeda's gonna getcha" to divert your sound-bite attention span away from W's woes. Surely you can see where you're heading?

Well, here we go again. Telling the general public that the intel suggests a great big BOOM! Annie, get yer gun!
(What do we do, keep a sharp eye out for them turbans and the bearded guys?)
I do not believe what the CIA does has been overall beneficial to the USA.
It has become an arm of the political machine that serves the interests of big oil and politicians.
Since 9/11/01, about 26,000 of our citizens have been killed by Mexicans and illegals who came in through Mexico, some who flee south to escape the authorities!! That doesn't even count the thousands who have been raped, robbed, beat up, and the 90% of the Columbian cocaine DEA said was coming in through back packs on their "mules". Desert Vision reported 6 backpacks with heroin were confiscated on the border recently. The lethal drug cartels are firing high powered rifles at our people, and Mexican military helps them come across the border. If we took a cleaning crew to clean up their trail of garbage, it would take 15 miles of dump trucks reportedly. OBL said it would be easy to cross the border. WHY? This isn't a racism issue, this is a common sense counter-terrorism issue. Instead, 150 BP agents were sent to help Iraq secure its borders. Our NG's have been told to stand down and run away when Mexican militias come a callin.
Why don't we have any senior intel official in Homeland Security alerting us about that threat? Heard any good intel lately, boys?

I love ABC's BS. It doesn't matter if it's true, Dick Cheney told us to print it!
You nutcases calling for the border to be closed are complete cowards. Name one other nation on earth with closed borders, besides North Korea. Sounds like paradise, right? You people are freaks.

If it's such an urgent and dire warning, why wait until Thursday? Will there be photo-ops Thursday? Does Dubya have a fundraiser he has to attend like he did during Katrina? And does this mean that THIS time, Bush will cancel his month-long August vacation and actually DO HIS JOB?????? Sure would be nice if we had secure borders about this time, eh?
Posted by: Mary | Jul 10, 2007 7:58:03 PM
Did Cheney provide you with this intellegence?
WH must want to get Iraq out of the news...
"fight them there so we don't fight them here..." yeah right.
BTW, why the hell is BIN LADEN still alive???
Posted by: Matt, AL | Jul 10, 2007 7:58:30 PM
Steve W...I'm guessing Americans will wise up around the same time you learn to properly conjugate a verb. Regardless of your feeling about W, does anyone really doubt that members of the ROP (religion of peace) are currently plotting another attack on U.S. soil?
Posted by: Dave | Jul 10, 2007 7:59:17 PM
Screw it. I'm not going to live my life in fear. If I am going to get blown to hell, make it before I pay anymore bills.
Posted by: dee | Jul 10, 2007 8:01:37 PM
We already know that a huge terror attack on a major infrastructure will happen so that the '08 elections will be influenced. The Republicans have nothing left but lies and terror, and WILL allow it, or bring it on themselves. I don't recognize America anymore. England had IRA, and they didn't act like complete morons.
Posted by: harriett | Jul 10, 2007 8:04:33 PM
How stupid is ABC???
This is just the Bushies againtrying to change the conversation from Iraq to terrorism... "We the People" have been lied to by Bush and his henchmen for 7 years and I think I can safely say that this intelligence is bogus.
If the threat was imminent why would they wait until Thursday to meet? "It's the News Cycle stupid!"
Posted by: Frank | Jul 10, 2007 8:05:50 PM
All you liberal anti-Bush SPs on this blog can kiss my foot. I hope the next Al Qaeda hit here takes you all with it. Get a clue you hopeless morons. Half of you can't even spell words correctly.
Posted by: Jon | Jul 10, 2007 8:08:18 PM
I really hate this administration. They will stop at nothing to divert your attention from all the negativity regarding this administration on the blogs. So big alert and your meeting is Thursday PM? Oh Hurry now!!! I wouldn't put it past them to have some incident just to manipulate the law to their selfish goals. It is so time to amass the people together and take this regime down - the hard way!
Posted by: JLW | Jul 10, 2007 8:08:21 PM
No other news source has as of yet come out with this threat!
Posted by: JLW | Jul 10, 2007 8:17:25 PM
JLW, among others: question.
Why does the little donkey party focus so much on only negative aspects of the GWOT? Is it to distract us from the incompetence and poorly guided leadership ability of the people that occupy the positions of leadership but have no hope of living up to the titles of their offices?
Posted by: John F L | Jul 10, 2007 8:25:58 PM
Mr. Jones is accurate. In regards to our President; most people are using him as a scapegoat to vent their fears and anger. I don't agree with everything he does or doesn't do (who does with any human?) but he has more courage to keep his stand than most of us and I pray for him.

Who ever is advocating dropping the bomb, forget it. We dont have the guts to drop the bomb again! Besides if we nuke the Middle East where are we going to get the oil to keep our economy running? Not to mention China, and the Russians, and even our 'friends' won't like their oil supply irradiated. Unfortunately, Bush has us fighting the wrong war. Iran who will undoubtably get nukes is the real threat! They are fighting a war by proxy against us in Iraq already. I mean how many Iranian advisors or their emmisary Hezbollah members must we catch before we realize they are already at war with us?!
Posted by: Ray | Jul 10, 2007 8:33:08 PM
Oh Gee Whiz! Is this the latest ploy to frighten the little children. How long and how many Americans' have demanded a secure and defended border???
Then we are told we have to be PC! Then we are told we cannot profile! Get real politicians and drive-by media. And we support our troops, but we do not support politicians who play games with our lives.
Posted by: Anne Hans | Jul 10, 2007 8:34:09 PM
I DO NOT BELIEVE IT- BUSH JUST WANTS TO KEEP THE TROOPS THERE LONGER, IS THIS NOT SO OBVIOUS, JUST LIKE HOW THE STORY OF THIS THREAT WAS FOLLOWED BY A SEGMENT ON TROOP WITHDRAWAL, WAKE UP PEOPLE WE ARE BEING SPOON FED!!!!!

The other day I posted a comment on another article about the terrorist, middle east and the lack of faith in this administration. I was concerned that this administration my choose to take a giant step in order to unite us or distract us. I hope this isn't it.
