FBI: Iraqis Being Smuggled Across the Rio Grande

July 17, 2007 3:11 PM

Brian Ross Reports:

Fbiiraqisbein_mn The FBI is investigating an alleged human smuggling operation based in Chaparral, N.M., that agents say is bringing "Iraqis and other Middle Eastern" individuals across the Rio Grande from Mexico.

An FBI intelligence report distributed by the Washington, D.C. Joint Terrorism Task Force, obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com, says the illegal ring has been bringing Iraqis across the border illegally for more than a year.

Border Patrol officials in the area said they were unaware of the specifics of the FBI's report, and federal prosecutors in New Mexico told ABCNews.com they had no current cases involving the illegal smuggling of Iraqis.

The FBI report, issued last week, says the smuggling organization "used to smuggle Mexicans, but decided to smuggle Iraqi or other Middle Eastern individuals because it was more lucrative." Each individual would be charged a fee of $20,000 to $25,000, according to the report.

The people to be smuggled would "gather at a house on the Mexican side of the border" and then cross the Rio Grande into the U.S., the report says.

"Unidentified individuals would then transport them to train stations in El Paso, Texas or Belen, New Mexico," according to the FBI document.

A spokesman in Albuquerque said the FBI had "no viable information" that could lead to a case.

Until recently, the United States has kept its doors all but shut to the estimated two million refugees fleeing the violence in Iraq. Until this year, the country had taken in fewer than 800 Iraqi refugees, according to the State Department. This May, the Bush administration pledged to resettle 7,000 Iraqi refugees here by the end of the year.

Just freaking lovely!

The last paragraph makes me shake my head in frustration at an otherwise useful story.

What on earth do you think Iraqis and other Middle Easterners sneaking into the US has to do with refugees fleeing violence in Iraq? Apples and oranges.

If Middle Easterners are coming all the way to Mexico and paying 25k to sneak across the US border, they're not coming for a career move. Get your head out of the sand.

This country is a joke!

Posted by: Truth | Jul 17, 2007 3:27:43 PM

Real nice. The smuggling of potential terrorists right under the nose of our brilliant commander in chief. Maybe Bush, McCain, and Ted Kennedy can explain all about the advantages of this special kind of "diversity."
One more 9/11 and I think this country will have had its fill of political correctness, naivety, and general stupidity & incompetence on the part of politicians and bureaucrats.

Posted by: Fedup | Jul 17, 2007 3:30:09 PM

We have known this has been going on for years now , yet you run this story as though it is a revaluation.
You should be using this space to demand a closure to the BORDER !!
PLEASE DO YOUR PART ON STOPPING THE NEXT ATTACK INSIDE OUR BORDER .This is by pardinson , "OUR" safety .

Posted by: justin case | Jul 17, 2007 3:30:57 PM

If one American is killed because George Bush and Michael Chertoff and the Congress and Senate have failed to secure our borders, they should be brought up on complicity to commit murder charges.

Posted by: Andy | Jul 17, 2007 3:31:21 PM

Brian Ross appears to be carrying the water for the Administration. Believe me that there are no Iraqis coming over the Mexican border. This is a ploy by the Bushies to set up the next false flag operation on US soil. The revolution is coming soon . . .

Posted by: Travis | Jul 17, 2007 3:31:44 PM

If we would have started building the fence on 9/12/01 we wouldn't have this problem. But because we're soft and cave in to every crybaby and special interest group we are vulnerable.

All the lefties and the hate America first crowd must be real proud of their accomplishment. The responsibility for the next attack rests squarely on their shoulders.

Posted by: Webo | Jul 17, 2007 3:32:39 PM

I think the FBI report goes a long way to substantiating the claim that AQ may use Iraqi AQ to attack in the US, and soon.

I don't understand how you manage to contrive the story into something about immigration and refugees from Iraq.

Posted by: Harry | Jul 17, 2007 3:33:24 PM

We need these Iraqis to perform tasks that Americans are not willing to do!

Posted by: nologic | Jul 17, 2007 3:33:53 PM

watch out...Ted Kennedy will head up a bill that will criminalize our persecution of these new hard-working citizens....to be politically correct we will have to call them....hmmmm "Terrorist-Americans"

Posted by: kevin | Jul 17, 2007 3:33:55 PM

As Soon as we loose a big city and or have another 911 the sooner we can get on with fixing the problem ...

They are just adding numbers to the army of the enemy within our borders, that's my 2 cents...

Posted by: Thefix | Jul 17, 2007 3:36:34 PM

This is a no brainer! We haven't or won't defend our borders what the hell do you think is going to happen. Of course terrorists are going to come across. Gee how did Bush drop the ball on this????

Posted by: Russ Chretien | Jul 17, 2007 3:36:37 PM

BUSH set this up??? are you a child or just completely dumb....The FBI made this report!!!!...all you conspiracy theorists need to forgive your daddy for not loving you enough and get over yourself......

Surprise, Surprise!
(only to the stupid politicians)!

Posted by: aiko | Jul 17, 2007 3:37:28 PM

This is precisely why George Bush must be impeached immediately. He doesn't care about the security of the united states.

I don't think the democrats have any answers but Bush has had almost 6 years since 9/11 to close the border. He has failed and violated the oath of his office. He must leave.

Posted by: deroy | Jul 17, 2007 3:37:47 PM

I cannot believe Mexican nationals are being smuggled into the United States! This is unheard of!

Posted by: Brian Bryant | Jul 17, 2007 3:38:33 PM

It concerns me greatly that the threat posed by al qaida to attack the U.S. isn't being taken seriously by American politicians. It seems to be politics as usual in Washington.

Posted by: D. Faica | Jul 17, 2007 3:38:33 PM

We in Texas have known about this for more than a year; its been on our LOCAL TV and LOCAL radio news reports. Last year, if I remember correctly, the executive branch tried to make the story "softly go away."

Posted by: Buck | Jul 17, 2007 3:42:22 PM

What happens when the Dems take office and we have another 9/11? Most likely... nothing different at all. Until we meet force with greater force, this will always be as it is.

This is a Nation allowed by GOD to be a place of REFUGE from Tyranny. It's the State Department that has reduced the numbers and added many years of WAITING to get into this country is the MAIN reason for this illegal immigration problem. SHAME on the State Department!

So this is not brain surgery - someone half way around the world could pick up any us national newspaper and figure out that across the Rio is the easiest way into the country. When are they going to get the border fixed? Oh that's right - it is better to take the fight to them in Iraq.

Good call veritas! I've been nervous about that possibility since Gulf War I. I wondered why Saddam never trained a thousand or so of his boys for this type of infiltration.

Only one solution tell everyone you know to vote nothing but 3rd party candidates for president and congress. Not even independents are trustworthy, vote a whole multitude of other 3rd party candidates to send a wake up call. God forbid there is another 9/11, if so..you will see vigilantism and a revolt that will make the Boston Tea Party look like sesame street.

How strange, as soon as Mr. Bush's (sic) (reputation) further drops, out comes yet another report of Illegal Immigration.
No proof, no smoking gun, just more Bush rhetoric.

Posted by: Stuart | Jul 17, 2007 3:48:17 PM

Having read these comments what comes to mind is the question of what's more scary? The outside threat of terrorism, or the inside threat of totalitarianism? People are calling to completely seal off the US borders? What, build a wall around the entire United States? Just the southern border, how about the Canadian border? Create a military police state? Anybody remember the Berlin Wall??? Is that what you want? Shoot anyone who tries to cross over??? Bring up Bush on murder charges??? In case you haven’t heard, Bush OK’d a plan to increase the Border Patrol numbers by 30,000. We already have the military deployed along the border. What more do you want, military check points on every road and highway in the US? Gee, we can be just like the old Soviet Union. Do you have your traveling permit and papers in order comrade??? You don’t mind if we search your vehicle at gunpoint do you, since you have nothing to hide???

Posted by: randy | Jul 17, 2007 3:48:51 PM

This is impossible. Everybody KNOWS that "We're fighting them over there so we won't have to fight them over here". So obviously, all the terrorists are over there, not here. This is just more liberal mainstream media...Rush and Sean told me so.

Posted by: wilder5121 | Jul 17, 2007 3:49:30 PM

The Border Patrol, there every day, are "unaware" of such a smuggling operation. Federal prosecutors in New Mexico have no such cases. The FBI in New Mexico has "no comment".

In the context of these past couple of weeks of totally unsubstantiated "booga booga" propaganda emanating from the oligarchs in Washington, it's clear that yet another false flag operation is in the works.

When did the former United States become a land of zombies willing to believe anything just because the government said so? When did transparent propaganda become confused with "news"?

Posted by: Rod | Jul 17, 2007 3:50:31 PM

SEAL OFF THE BORDERS. If Israel can do it and be successful, so can we. I'm afraid this country is headed for a civil war if our 'leaders' continue to sellout. We, the people, are getting fed up.

Posted by: Paige | Jul 17, 2007 3:51:03 PM

As a campaign worker for Bush in both elections, he has lost my support over this immigration nonsense! Wow. Middle easterners coming across the Mexican border. Who would have thought THAT would happen?! Until we secure our borders and start sending the criminals back to Mexico and wherever else they came from, we are fooling ourselves thinking that we have ANY Homeland "Security!" You want to come to the U.S.? Get in line in YOUR own country!

Posted by: Me | Jul 17, 2007 3:51:10 PM

Yay, something else to blame bush for. If I'm not mistaken, aren't most of the Democrats the ones who pushed to keep our borders open? I hope I am wrong because all these people wouldn't have anything to complain about.

Posted by: Dell | Jul 17, 2007 3:51:43 PM

How sad that congress battles among themselves while we are losing our borders. Sen. Reid and Sen. Kerry are blinded by anger and hate for Bush. I've always felt the USA could never be defeated by external powers - we will defeat ourselves from within. When is the last time the Reps and Dems worked together to accomplish anything important? The future looks grim.

Posted by: Bobo | Jul 17, 2007 3:52:31 PM

PUT UP A WALL!!!!!!! I'm so sick of all of this. Bush is horrible with his my way for everything. And now look.

Posted by: Dan | Jul 17, 2007 3:53:13 PM

As long as the Dept of Justice keeps putting Border Patrol Agents in jail for doing their jobs the bigger the problem gets. Homeland security is nothing but an empire building job creating government boondoggle organization to destroy this country. Living in southern New Mexico we see the results of these clowns. The Congress of this country abets this criminal endeavor. God help us all.

Posted by: Lyle Liesner | Jul 17, 2007 3:54:39 PM

Randy, 30,00 troops along the border is a joke when they're being arrested on a regular basis for doing their job! Their hands are tied just like our soldiers' hands are tied in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's for show, Randy. Bush has to look like he's doing something. He actually is seeking no borders - one continent. It's in the works. He's following in his Dad's footsteps. We have NO border patrol.

I love it when the gov't "fixes" things... We need to fire the whole gov't and start over. Everyone in the State & Federal Gov't should be kicked out, reorganize the 2 million Departments of Everything and elect new people that have half an ounce of common sense to run the show.

Had the Americans' rulers lived up to the reputation given them by their own Left, they would have taken the oil fields of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Iran, rather than tie themselves down in trying to reform broken countries. They would have made the turnover of Saudi wealth a condition for the Saudi "princes'" lives. They would have increased their wealth while impoverishing their enemies. They would have paid for their wars, their recovery from 9/11, and their border security from their new oil revenues, and they would have annexed OPEC's former power to their own.

That the Americans' rulers didn't take this course is evidence they're not the crafty men their Left says they are. Instead, their lack of flexibility impairs their prudence in defense of liberty.

4. Who wants a system where you have to inform a cell member you enforced a search warrant(duh--bye bye investigation!) Libs
5. Who worries about how we are perceived by our enemies? Libs
6. Who can name one American that has lost any rights of any kind due process to anti-terror policy? No one.
7. Who worries about terror suspects and their 'rights?' You guessed it.

First, Probably Bush and Neocons are lying to us to get support to stay in Iraq to "fight them over there, not here." Its all manipulation and lies. IF not, he is completely incompetent if this has been "going on for one year" and the border patrol knows less than Abc news. If THAT is the case, bush and cheney should be impeached. Word...
Remember -- in the end, when all is said and done, GW Bush will be nothing more than just a grease spot on the pages of history.

Posted by: bushgreasespot | Jul 17, 2007 4:01:04 PM

Let's not place all of the blame on Bush. It deserves to be placed on EVERY freaking political "leader" that is in power now. They are more interested in gaining votes for the next election that they could care less about this country and the safety of our families. They spend more time approving a pay raise for themselves than doing something about securing our borders. IT MAKES ME SICK. Why can't we have our own version of "The Great Wall of China"???????

Border control throughout the West is fast becoming an issue of national survival. How can we possibly continue to exist as long as we accept millions upon millions of 3rd world foreigners into our midsts each year? Do we have no interest in national and cultural survival?
The nations of the 3rd world MUST be forced to face the issues in their own countries. As long as the West serves as a relief valve the required societal pressures won't build to critical mass such that change can take place. It is in the best interest of the 3rd world as well as ourselves if we shut the doors.

Posted by: Eric | Jul 17, 2007 4:04:59 PM

"Border Patrol officials in the area said they were unaware of the specifics of the FBI's report"

Two words: "scare tactics"
Just another story to go along with Chertoff's gut feeling. Scare the people silly and then watch them give up everything to secure their safety. The freaking border patrol is unaware of this so called behavior. Show some evidence, until then this is nothing more than propaganda.

Posted by: jm | Jul 17, 2007 4:06:03 PM

Posted by: Tom | Jul 17, 2007 4:07:01 PM

I'm afraid the legacy of the Bush administration and the other Democrats might be another 9/11 that will be 3-4 times worse than the first one. While we spent hundreds of billions of dollars fighting terrorists in the Middle East, Bush and Congress left our back door open for the terrorists to walk in freely and then attempted to give amnesty to 12+ million, failed to secure the border, and virtually guaranteed that potential terrorists would be lost in the shuffle. Just great!

Posted by: Chris | Jul 17, 2007 4:08:01 PM

Liberals Dictionary:
Border fence: 1. A line in the sand used to create racial and ethnic drama...2. A structure that one can argue would never be used by terrorists, but if they do, they feel free to blame the people who tried to build it.

Please tell me someone didn't just say we can close off our borders as easily as Israel. Ask families of those killed by suicide bombers in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa how well "totally sealed borders" worked to save their loved ones. Have you considered the complexity of such a completely absurd thought, given geographic size disparities, greater relative oceanic borders, trade differential (i.e., infinitely greater port traffic) in the U.S.? Israel is 1/25 the size of Texas alone. Your comment only serves to illuminate the vast reactionary ignorance of they average American, and is an embarrassment to the rest of us who call ourselves Americans.

There was some finger pointing after that attack, but it could at least be argued no one could have seen it coming.

What's going to happen if an attack that everyone not only saw coming, but were begging their congress and president to prevent?

Posted by: dan | Jul 17, 2007 4:09:13 PM

We are geographically isolated from all the people that intend to do us harm. It is completely unfathomable to me that we act like we are powerless to control illegal entry into this country. Secure the borders (2 of them). Freeze immigration, prosecute illegal immigration, deport everyone that appears on a terrorist watch list, prosecute those that preach destruction of America and Americans (sorry PC people - that's a crime) etc. This is so insane it is pathetic. Mexico screams if we encroach 12 inches into their country. Why are we such wimps? We owe the world nothing. It seems everybody else comes first except for American citizens and we are being sold out. I just don't understand why.

Posted by: Too Blind to See? | Jul 17, 2007 4:13:25 PM

Unfortunately, it will take more terrorism in this country to move people to real action. Sad, isn't it? Americans, and I'm one of them, are too spoiled and apathetic to realize what's going on. They're asleep. Sad to say, but everyone will be awake when the terrorists, who surely are in this country already, strike, and strike again. Those peace-loving people, they.

Posted by: Julie | Jul 17, 2007 4:13:41 PM

Why would terrorist use the Mexican border to cross into America when they could just drive across the Canadian border?

Posted by: Matt | Jul 17, 2007 4:13:45 PM

I wonder if the politicians are getting a kick-back from the smugglers? Perhaps the smugglers have a lobby fest in D.C? Why else would they be dragging their feet? Seems like when politicians smell money these days it's like when sharks smell blood. Forget you - the electorate! They all are working to fill their own coffers.
How on earth do these same politicians keep getting re-elected over and over again when they keep doing stupid and wrong things against good, loyal and patriotic American citizens? When are we going to flat VOTE OUT all the incumbents? Lets do it this next election cycle!

I want Chertoff and Gonzalez fired - NOW! We have been screaming to the Bush administration to protect our borders and to enforce our immigration laws. But NO, Chertoff refuses to build the fence - only 13 miles have been built and that measley 13 miles is the wrong type - not a double fence as was designed. Attorney General Gonzalez not only does NOT prosecute those who violate our immigration laws, he uses illegal alien drug smugglers as witnesses against our Border Patrol Agents in order to shut them down and protect the illegal aliens and drug smugglers - and TERRORISTS SMUGGLERS!! Chertoff openly scoffs and said the job was too big. Chertoff should have been fired long ago - he is worse than Tom Ridge on border security and that is saying a lot. If the terrorists hit us, Bush, Gonzalez, and Chertoff must be held accountable for openly endangering our citizens and refusing to uphold our immigration laws. But, why wait?

People! THINK for a minute! Do you realize how many TONS OF DRUGS are smuggled across the border each year...cocaine, heroin and pot -- across both Mexico and Canada? And you think all of sudden we're going to stop the flow of people? Pul-eeze, wake up!! Our borders our porous and always have been. Just be prepared for the next attack and hope we can survive and strike back. It's going to be a long war.
