'Hustler' Call May Have Prompted Vitter Admission
July 10, 2007 1:26 PM
A call from Hustler magazine may have prompted a Louisiana Republican senator to expose his past with an escort service run by the so-called "D.C. Madam," the Blotter on ABCNews.com has learned.
Sen. David Vitter, R-La., sent a statement to the New Orleans bureau of the Associated Press late yesterday confirming that he had used the now-defunct Washington, D.C. escort service Pamela Martin and Associates, whose former proprietress, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, has come to be known as the D.C. Madam, thanks to her high-profile federal prosecution.
Last week, immediately following a judge's order, Palfrey turned over phone records for her service from 1993 to 2006 to Washington, D.C. investigative reporter and author Dan Moldea, with whom she is writing a book, Moldea told ABCNews.com.
According to Palfrey's lawyer, Vitter's number appeared on a February 2001 phone record, which his client had not previously shared with other news outlets, including ABC News.
Photos D.C. Madam Affair Unfolds
The next day, Moldea told ABCNews.com, he discovered a phone number connected to Vitter in the records.
Moldea, who also works as an investigator for Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, contacted Flynt with the information, he said. Flynt did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ABCNews.com.
Yesterday afternoon, a Hustler editor contacted Vitter's office to ask his connection to Palfrey's service.
Soon after, Vitter's office released its statement.
Vitter's office did not respond to requests for comment.
Earlier this year ABC News received and analyzed a portion of Palfrey's phone records that included calls between 2002 and 2006 but found no indication of Vitter having used the service. A new search of the records previously provided to ABC News against several numbers that have belonged to Vitter returned no matches.
Palfrey could not immediately be reached for comment.
The revelation of Hustler's involvement is not without irony. Vitter joined Congress by winning a House seat vacated by former Rep. Bob Livingston, R-La., in 1999. Livingston, a chief accuser of former President Bill Clinton during his Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, was forced to step down after Hustler magazine threatened to publish evidence of his own marital infidelity, which he admitted upon his resignation.
Flynt has announced he will hold a press conference Wednesday. According to a Flynt spokeswoman, the publisher is not planning to release any more names of former Palfrey clients, but she promised "more stuff" would come out then.

Funny how pornographers are only interested in taking down republicans. Are democrats really better off having the likes of Larry Flynt in their corner. Personally I prefer to cast my lots with falible republicans rather than amoral dems.

Ah, the bitter smell of hypocrisy in the morning sure makes the nostrils flare.
Posted by: Phillybits | Jul 10, 2007 1:56:16 PM
i guess this means we can look forward to two things very soon: 1. Rep. David "John" Vitter will resign for his indiscretion, just like he thought Clinton should (1998). 2. His wife, Wendy will perform a Lorena Bobbitt on him (2000). i wish them both the best in their respective endeavors. :o]

Hustler is really becoming a must-read magazine even without the erotic content. I've purchased the last couple of issues and I really have to say that it's become my favorite magazine because of the political angles covered and other well written articles. Now of course you may be thinking, "Yeah right... he reads it for the articles!" I'm an erotic photographer myself, so looking at nude women is something I do regularly. The articles and investigative reporting in Hustler really are top notch!

The Christian Right doesn't care if people lie to them. That's why there's no outrage over the Iraq War on the Christian Right. And that's why Vitter will probably not lose any support.

Kick Vitter's lying butt out!
Posted by: Thumper | Jul 10, 2007 2:12:54 PM
Hmmm. I read a report that in 2000 his wife told a news source she was more like Lorena Bobbit than Hillary Clinton and indicated what would happen to him. Now she seems to be a bit more like Hillary.
Hillary took hell over her "Stand by your man" comments. My guess is repubs will not want to bash this guys wife over this. They are a lot more civil with their own.

Either you have an incompetent staff or corrupt management. ABC News Should be ashamed they did not break this story when it was handed to them. Lets see them spin that.

I guess ABC crack investigating team could not un-earth what an unknown investigator for Hustler magazine could! I don't buy the assertion that ABC could not find a match earlier or today - I don't think ABC news tried hard enough to link teh phone records with anyone.

The idea of two same-sex partners living in a monogamous relationship wanting to get married has caused Senator Vitter much anguish. All this time I thought it was the "same-sex" part that bothered him; apparently it's the "monogamy" part.
Posted by: Hank Hury | Jul 10, 2007 3:23:19 PM
I believe Senator Vitter is truly sorry, he is sorry that he got caught!

I guess we'll never really hear the truth about the Cheney connection, either.

Which section of the Bible is it that describes "adultery", because apparently all these moral do gooders do not know where it's located. Ain't it grand they all find religion, forgiveness ET AL after they are caught? Gee do you think his or some other persons name on the list voted to Impeach Clinton. Oh, I know that's different because he got his oral sex in the White House and not at the MADAM'S BROTHEL.

Posted by: Mark | Jul 10, 2007 3:51:02 PM
I'd rather put my trust in people that can use and spell the word fallible.
I don't think it's a matter of Hustler targeting certain parties, it's just a lot better when the person is a huge hypocrite (see: Haggard, Ted)
Posted by: Danielle | Jul 10, 2007 3:51:34 PM
Larry Flynt is not politically aligned with either party - Hustler takes on hypocrites from both sides of the isle.
Posted by: shaverca | Jul 10, 2007 3:51:52 PM
I don't care, and I don't know anybody that cares. I have lived too long to expect politicians and other thieves to keep their toys in their pants. Of course, Washington is crawling with women who are attracted to all that power, so you'd have to be almost dead to resist it forever.
Posted by: TonyFacade | Jul 10, 2007 3:56:43 PM
Compared to all the old guys on the list, he is a prize, I bet he was a popular customer and as Tom Cruise says in Risky Business "Time of your Life." I think it is especially funny, that the Senator's wife scoffed at Hilary for not leaving Bill in 2000 and said if that was me, i would have acted like Lorraine Bobbit....whateva, yada yada yada...
Posted by: John | Jul 10, 2007 4:12:51 PM
It is my guess that Flynt has the goods on far more important people than sad, little David Vitter.
Posted by: John | Jul 10, 2007 4:21:55 PM
This of no surprise to me. The ones that mouth-off are typically the hypocrites. What are these so-called 'Family Values' I hear so much about anyway? I'm gay, been in a 25 year monogamous relationship and have 2 well-adjusted straight kids in college. Give me a break.
Posted by: fed-up | Jul 10, 2007 4:23:05 PM
It's not about attacking Democrats or Republicans here, it's about crooked politicians who pander to certain groups basing their politics on social causes such as the anti-gay stance that Mr. Vitter so vehemently took up as a "cause celebre", claiming that he was defending marriage. Well, this case has been around for months, did he really think that no one would find out. Why did he wait this long? I'm sure not only Republicans used the Madam's service, there are probably other Democrats or independents out there who still need to come out of the closet and say, hey I made a mistake, I used her services, I'm sorry... etc. and move on. The problem is, when such person claims to be for something, yet does the opposite. Hypocrite! This just shows you that you first need to defend marriage by making it tougher on those who seek divorce, those who commit adultery, those who fornicate, etc...once you fix that, maybe then you can have a saying on gay marriage.
Posted by: Dan di Palma | Jul 10, 2007 4:28:36 PM
Same old crap, another High and Mighty Republican who is fighting equal rights for gays because the Bible preaches that homosexuality is a sin. Well so is Adultery, in fact, its carved in stone, known as the 10 commandments. Such a hypocrite. I hope Hustler exposes them all. You know, the only laws written by God himself never addressed homosexuality, the perceived great evil against God loving American families as the Republicans put it. Do as I say, not as I do!!! The Republican motto for success.

This so closely parallels John Steinbeck's East of Eden, in which the character Kate is a madam who collects information on VIPs and hoards it to blackmail or destroy them later in life. Seems like a no-brainer of what VIPs should not do, even if they need to recall high school literature class! In the end, Kate kills herself. So shame on everyone, sheesh.

Why is it that ABC Couldn't find out the people on the list? I have personally been calling for them to publish the list ever since this story came out. Brian Ross is FALLIN DOWN ON THE JOB! He just CAN'T FIND OUT WHO IS ON THE LIST, I saw him on TV telling everyone that they "just couldn't find anyone of importance on that list. . . . Oh My Oh My! My head hurts!!!
Posted by: artist0122 | Jul 10, 2007 5:05:32 PM
To me it was and is very fishy that ABC news could had the records and said they checked it out for the American people and basically the DC madam was exagerating its importance and the big names that had used her service. If it wasn't for Hustler magazine the public would still not have gotten the real story. It just reinforces what I have long believed. Network news is compromised by the corporate owners and if the public really wants to get news they should do it on the Internet, C-SPAN, Democracy Now, not network tv.

The sweet hypocrisy is absolutely delicious.
So what that David Vitter preaches about the sanctity of marriage and abstinence. He isn't really talking about himself. He is talking about others and the stupid religious wackos who buy this crap
Posted by: vittersboyfriend | Jul 10, 2007 6:35:45 PM
Vitter ran on a 'Moral Issues" platform. He solicited a call girl, which is the same penalty as being a call girl. Of course, he will use his elitist connections and not serve any time or face any penalty. And, according to Vitter "God has Forgiven Me". How humble. I am sure he got an overnight priority Fedex straight from Heaven. And, what about the girl he abused? She would have to serve time if caught. These phony moralists will send non-violent offenders to prison for life for three strikes. It is about the Hypocracy. Bush offers no pardons in Texas, and his henchman Libby walks. Heck of a Job...

Ross,
If you had any integrity as a journalist, you'd fess up to what really happened behind the scenes at ABC and then resign—take some time off to think about your great journalistic sin. You sir, have no integrity if you allow your network to muzzle you from reporting the truth.
Palfrey was quoted as being upset that ABC punted on the biggest Beltway scandal of the year after you limited your findings to a bunch of people nobody heard of, like Andrew Tobias. Months later, we find out that Palfrey had good reason to be upset, you held back information. You aided the GOP instead of reporting the truth. You became a prime example of the Sovietization of the American media.
Forgive us if nobody believes the lame "dog-ate-my-homework" excuse that you weren't given the whole list. That's a lot of like the White House saying that they lost a whole bunch of e-mails.
The mainstream media—fast becoming the ministry of propoganda for this government—is the biggest problem in Washington if it's so spineless as to only report as ordered.

He had the nerve to seek pleasure from the Madam before, now he is a coward to claim that he has found God and is sorry. "falible republicans?" How about hypocrites who, with their ability to be blackmailed, have put our national security at risk. Married men with high level security positions should not visit escort services. They put themselves in a position to be compromised if they are a military or government official. Is that acceptable to you, Mr Republican?
Posted by: CaptainCrunch | Jul 10, 2007 11:48:52 PM
is this or is it not looney? republicans are "falible" (sic), but dems are "amoral." but then, maybe there really is a word "falible" and maybe it refers to someone who is capable of sexual transgressions but is not in the habit of parading himself as mr. righteous at the same time. it might not be admirable, but it sure beats hypocrisy anytime.

Hooray to Hustler! I liked what they did to uncover the hypocrites during the ridiculous Clinton impeachment, and I like what they did now. Seems they're the only ones uncovering such hypocrisy. Vitter is just another typical Republican preaching against everyone else's so called faults, while really having those faults themselves. This jerk Vitter should resign immediately and take his fellow Republicans and President Bush with him.

Come on, Larry - you've got to have something good on people a little higher up. I'll bet your investigator would sniff around Jeff Gannon a little if he/she was paid enough. Then we could find out more about the First Family values. That would be admirable, though very dangerous, reporting.

Why are only republicans being named. Have democrats been scrubbed from the list? C'mon. This is not a partisan problem. This is sick. Watch the likes of ABC News and other mainstream media will once agai nshow their bias by protecting Dem politicans. This why we - the center right majority - don't watch you. If you just reported it straight and balanced we'd watch. You could double your ratings but you won't because you forgot what journalism is really about - and it's not your personal politics.

IT'S THE CONDOMS...
I would like to see the media, bloggers and advocacy groups press Vitter on condom use...the sexual equivalent of "Did you inhale?"
Did he try to protect himself and his wife during his recreational sex? As a Catholic and staunch social conservative his voting record I assume is clearly against sex education, condom use and family planning for others...ie the poor, young and ignorant.
Such hypocrisy on safe sex vs abstinence and ignorance is a critical public health and policy issue. Such hypocritical voting has devastating consequences -- deadly and botched abortions, unwanted and abused children, loss of education, homelessness, poverty, HIV-AIDS and a host of other serious venereal diseases.
We should not let this teachable moment escape or be buried by the sensationalism of Vitter's escapades or BS about sin and contrition.

I don't care if there's a double standard here --although I don't agree there is. She's the head of the enterprise. Take her down. The dudes can suffer whatever their fate is by being exposed. Gay-basher = Gay
Fair and Balanced = Biased and Partisan
Supports Our Troops = Supports Walter Reed Cover-up
Pro-Marriage, Pro-Guns, Pro-Right-to-Life = Pro Guiliani
Hates Flip-Flop Kerry = Loves Romney
Stops Voter Fraud = Prevent Democrats from voting

Why are you making such a big deal about Senator David Vitter's so-called "sex scandal?" Who cares what he did in 2001? Is that the worst thing going on in the world today? I really don't need to know about it - that's between Senator Vitter and his wife. Sure is getting good publicity for a few people in the business, though!
What about what's happening right now in the state of Louisiana? I'm talking about issues such as unsafe and unfair working conditions for state workers, corruption, waste of resources, and an overall lack of accountability to the taxpayer by Louisiana state government.
I'm not talking about our elected officials, either – I'm talking the hired workers of state government, from the executives on down.
There are literally hundreds of departments, commissions and agencies, and that's too many. If state government is a business funded by us, the taxpayers, I say run it like a real business. Yes, much vital, important work is being done, but how long are we going to keep carrying the huge bloated bureaucracy that is sucking up billions of dollars?
And please tell me why is there so little reported about problems in state government in either the New Orleans Times-Picayune or the Baton Rouge Advocate. Stories about state health workers’ sick-outs to protest working conditions are squelched along with abuse of FEMA funds by state officials themselves. I’ve heard witness accounts of both myself.
Why don't we know, for example, why the state chose ICF Corporation to run the Road Home program? Isn't that our money they are spending? That's the real scandal right there if you ask me – why so much of the Road Home scandal is still a big secret. I’d like to know who doesn’t want Governor Blanco to say anymore than she has about Road Home and ICF.
I’ll bet some people are making money off Road Home, but it seems like the people the program is supposed to help are really unhappy with it, or so I have read. So what’s really happening – are we ever going to know? I guess we’re just supposed to keep buying the spin that they keep serving us, after all, we bought and paid for it already, anyway.

It is funny how you associate a pornographer as better than a man than just admitted to cheating on his wife with prostitutes. Then you justify it by saying he is a falible Republican. That is typical on the Republican side to be so hypocritical. Larry Flynt is Larry Flynt. He may be a pornographer but he has more moral character than a man that lies and hires prostitutes and at the same time smears others while preaching about family values. I trust someone with truth and honor, even a pornographer, over someone that is a hypocrite and fraud. What does honor mean to you? What about integrity? It is disgusting where the Republican party has gone and even more disgusting that our country has been taken down this road.

This just confirmed what I've believed since Brian Ross's non-story: ABC had the goods on Palfrey's high-profile customers and sat on the information to protect republicans. There is simply no other explanation for this. ABC knew about Vitter and who knows how many other Washington insiders who are on that list and sat on it.

Dames and Gents,
In times unprecedented and tinged with despair, it is appropriate to reflect on the founding of our great nation. It was not with George Washington, but with Brutus, and not the one who killed Caeser. There was another who rebelled against the tyrant monarchy of Rome, The Tarquins. He wrote the Roman Constitution that would stand for 500 years. His sons sided with the monarchy. The monarchy lost. So to punish his sons and found a perfect union, he immolated his own sons.
Machiavelli speaks fluently and voluminoulsy and voiciferously on this subject, in ‘The Discourses’, and yet is proved wrong on several counts by the miracle of America.

What is being uncovered now is only the tip of the iceberg. You can’t blame any political party for wrong doing. If you did we would have to eliminate both parties from the house. You would have to close down the CIA and FBI for participating in far more heinous crimes than a sexual affair. Bush and Clinton both had someone on their payroll to be “eliminators”. Of course provided by the CIA and trained by the CIA. If someone had the backbone to take a deep look into what is not “public knowledge”, you might uncover something far more interesting than an affair.
