Iraqi-U.S. Smuggling Ring Busted in Peru

July 19, 2007 12:19 PM

Iraqiussmuggl_mn_4 A criminal ring attempting to smuggle Iraqis into the United States has been busted in Lima, Peru, U.S. law enforcement officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

At least 10 Iraqis have been arrested over the last month there, some as they prepared to board flights to Los Angeles.

U.S. officials said the Iraqis were found with stolen Dutch and German passports which had been altered.

Blotter FBI: Iraqis Being Smuggled Across the Rio Grande

"Peru has a growing problem," a U.S. official said. "It has become a center for people trying to enter the United States illegally."

Peruvian police became suspicious when it was determined that none of the Iraqis spoke Dutch or German.

Dutch and German citizens do not require visas to enter the United States.

U.S. officials say three Iraqis, two brothers and a sister, were arrested on June 21 at the Lima airport.

Seven others, including the alleged ringleader of the group, were arrested this week, Peruvian police Col. Roberto Lujan told the Associated Press in Lima.

The AP said it was not immediately clear whether those arrested were Iraqi Chaldean Christians who frequently try to enter the U.S., claiming they face persecution in Iraq. California is home to a sizable Chaldean community.

ABCNews.com reported earlier this week that the FBI had learned of another ring operating out of New Mexico that was smuggling Iraqis into the country across the Rio Grande River in New Mexico.

Why are they waisting the effort in smuggling them in. 2 easy ways in:

Have Bush bring you here as a "refugee"

or

just walk across the border from Mexico, oh wait, Mexico has stricter immigration laws than the U.S., they won't be able to get in there.

Go with option 1.

Even if these Iraqi's are Chaldeans, I think there is cause for some healthy skepticism here. Coming to the US may be more desireable, but we do not need to grant these people asylum. I don't think that Iraqis would be unsafe in Germany or the Netherlands. Because of the Iraq War, I think that it is a legitimate concern to consider that Iraqis seeking to enter the US may wish to do harm to US citizens. This is good police work.

The Peruvian police and immigration officials deserve our thanks and appreciation for catching these people. If they were legitimate refugees, they would be coming in with the blessings of the US government to programs established to help them resettle.

I don't see a problems here all they want to do is blow up a few buildings and make a new life for themselves.

I just got some sound from that picture of Brian Ross and he was saying, "yea, that's one with sausage and mushrooms and one plain with extra cheese."

Our whole system is a big steaming pile of ***. We waste our soldiers lives and our finances over in the Middle East and Israel. Those people will never get along. Their religious beliefs are too extreme. We need to protect our US borders from all illegal immigrants. I have found out that now Mexicans have taken over for the production of meth and distribution into the US. One very good reason to block the border and enforce our illegal immigrant rules even more.

Dutch and German citizens do not require visas to enter the United States, but everyone else in the world does. Very interesting.

Why is everyone missing the point? The Iraqi's being 'smuggled' aren't dangerous terrorists! They are part of the 2 MILLION people who have been displaced by the Iraq war.

I'm shocked by all the racist, xenophobic, mean-spirited comments above. These Iraqis are just coming here to blow things up and to put bombs on their table. We're a nation of immigrants!

Gov't needs to look at all borders not only Mexican border especially Canada border where terrorists come through. It doesn't make sense to let Iraqi's move here to seek a good life and our soldiers are dying ove there. How crazy is tha?

Are you sure?

Posted by: zee | Jul 19, 2007 4:12:51 PM

@ Eric - What about the people displaced by Katrina? Shouldn't we take of them first?

Posted by: Gerald | Jul 19, 2007 4:20:14 PM

You've all obviously missed reporter Todd Bensman's five-part investigative series about Arabs and Iraqis crossing the Texas/Mexico border. He went all the way to Damascus and Amman and followed them back over the borders. This ABC news report is nothing compared to what Bensman reported in The San Antonio Express News. This series ran in May.

Peruvian police has done fine job. The Iraqis should not be allowed in the US because they are offenderd on false passport. Law should take it own course.

Just remember, folks--you don't hear much about it in the press, but al Qaida and Hamas have at least one base of ops in the tri-country region of South America. South America is a huge problem for our security simply because our Southern Border is so unprotected.

I looked up the articles mentioned by Nem in the San Antonio Express News and by Todd Bensman and they do indeed make this report pale in comparison. People from Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon coming in via Guatemala, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador by the thousands. But the difference is that the Peruvian authorities did something about cracking down on ring leaders rather than just demanding bribes or busting the travelers and letting the smugglers continue their lucrative business. As was mentioned, however, the really bad guys are bankrolled and can easily get in. Some do it legally, like the doctors in the recent plots over in the UK.

Posted by: brooks osgood | Jul 22, 2007 1:16:44 PM

all the 9-11 perpetrators entered the country legally. all the racist above crying about the horrible illegal immigrants are well, racist.

and isnt it wonderful how we destroyed iraq and turned it into a terrorist training ground and anarchic killing zone with 2 million+ leaving everything behind and fleeing for their lives? and even iraqis that have already been thoroughly vetted, like the many translators for the army and other people working for us cant even escape to the US. another one of many black marks against the worst, most incompetent, most immoral, most criminal administration ever.

Ron-lets remember who is imoral!!!! Who was having oral sex in the whitehouse--Bill Clinton. Who is incompetent and didn't catch OBL 3 times--Bill Clinton. Who has 21 deaths of persons closley associeted with him-- Bill Clinton. Do your research prior to running your mouth.
