Spanish Terror Group Targets Tour de France

July 25, 2007 5:32 PM

Spanishterror_mn The Basque separatist group, ETA, was behind the two explosions today along the Tour de France route in northern Spain, Spanish intelligence sources tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The small explosions caused no injuries when they were detonated along kilometer 51,450, about half a mile inside the Spanish border.

At the time of the blasts, the main part of the race had passed, and the rest of the riders passed a half-hour later without any interruptions or problems.

Blotter Summer Terror Reigns in Spain: Cease-fire Ends, Bomb Campaign Expected

The explosions followed a telephone bomb threat and only caused small rock slides.

As previously reported on the Blotter, the terror group called off its March 2006 cease-fire with Spain and declared it was resuming its violent campaign for independence last month.

Just more than two weeks after that, Spanish authorities seized a carload of explosives with a "manual on bomb making written in the Basque language" inside Spain's border, apparently showing the terror group was making good on its promise to step up its campaign for independence.

Despite the explosions, Tour de France, a favored target of the ETA, was once again embroiled in controversy when a second rider in as many days failed his doping test.

Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

Glad that the leaders were past before the bombs went off. We'd hate to have the outcome of this race effected by the terrorist. But if the guy who's in 51st place get's blown up, no big loss. ;-)

Are we tired yet of using the word "terrorist" in place of criminal, yet? I am.
Wouldn't "potential Spanish criminals" be a little more realistic in this story? It seems that everyone and anyone that intends someone else harm or plans a disruption in any public event in any country in the world anymore is called a "terrorist" while people murder people every day (especially here in the US) and they are simply criminals. What makes the difference? My God, people...They were criminals before 9/11 and in most cases I believe that's what they are now. 9/11 was an awesome criminal act. But I don't think that the world was shaken to the point that basic language changed. Sure there are terrorists and there are criminals. But not all criminals are terrorists simply because all terrorist do criminal things.

The Tour has become a spectacle of stupidity, anyway.

No one should show up for it next year, at all, so the French can have their "winner" they so crave.

Charlemagne, the method that ETA has used over past 50 years has been a long term campaign of fear and intimidation to further their political agenda, which is to have their own separate territory in what is now northern Spain. They have murdered 900 people in their attempt to reach their goal.

They are defined as a terrorist organization by the European Union, the United States, and the United Nations.

I think that the term "criminal" is a much broader term, and that terrorists are themselves criminals who are defined in a more narrow sense by their methodology and ambitions...

It was obvious to me this would happen. Seeing the amount of Orange shirts out there on the TV and Basque Flags. I also noticed the words "AZANZA" on the road which means "NOISE" in Basque and all I could think of were the sound of bombs. I wish we could have our Basque Country back again without being violent. Although our 7 provinces are in 2 different countries, we are still one nation with the first language in Europe, the highest concentration of O- blood in the world, and a proud heritage and strong people. We are still Basque (not French or Spanish). We have our own TV station and are somewhat autonomous but until Basque prisoners are brought home to the Basque Country this will continue to happen. I am proud to be Basque.

Criminials, commit crimes in 1 steal money, 2 blackmail people into paying protection, kiddnapp for ransom.
Terrorist commit shocking attacks on average people to cause terrror to publicise their cause. They want to terrorize the public. Terrorist are not after money, or jewels, or Art.
