U.S.: 'No Options off the Table' to Target AQ in Pakistan

July 18, 2007 6:32 PM

Usnooptionso_mn U.S. officials are mapping out new options of how to deal with what appears to be the gravest threat facing the United States: the resurgence of al Qaeda in Pakistan.

President Bush's top counterterrorism advisor told Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America" today that the U.S. does not rule out sending in American soldiers if Pakistan allows the safe haven to continue.

"The answer...is what we want to do is work with our Pakistani partners," Frances Townsend said in response to Diane Sawyer's question about sending U.S. troops into the tribal areas. "But the president's been very clear. There are no options off the table because job No. 1 is protecting the American people, and nothing will get in our way."

But Pakistani officials reiterated today that U.S. troops are not and would not be welcome there.

And U.S. officials say they have little confidence that the Pakistani army will do the job.

"It's gone in half-hearted, and it's been ineffective," said Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer who now works at The Brookings Institution. "I think part of the problem is that a good part of the army and the intelligence services are actually sympathetic to the Islamic extremists."

The options for U.S. military action are limited in Pakistan, which boasts the same vast, rugged areas that have bogged down U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

But U.S. analysts do not rule out a pinpoint strike if there was hard intelligence on the location of Osama bin Laden or his top deputies.

"There are obviously certain risks you take if you undertake that kind of operation," Bob Grenier, a former CIA official who now works with the global security firm Kroll, said, "but that is something which is quite feasible. If we're talking about denying a safe haven, that's a very different thing."

Officials say hundreds of terrorists have been trained and dispatched for attacks against the U.S. and Europe from that safe haven.

As the Blotter on ABCNews.com reported last week, senior law enforcement and intelligence officials had "multiple and credible" reports that an al Qaeda terror cell may be on its way to the United States or could already be in the country.

So Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer says about the Pakistani army "It's gone in half-hearted, and it's been ineffective," ? So what about the American army/navy and airforce etc... who went in full-hearted and armed to the teeth against Al-Qaeda? Has IT been effective?

Saeb-

I guarantee you we are killing Al Qaeda guys at a 20-1 ratio over our guys. They dont fight - they use our respect for life against us, because they have none. The only way they kill anyone is by blowing something up. If they ever do conquer a country (unlikely) they will get crushed. If the US ever decides that it should fight the same way as Al Qaeda does - AQ will be smushed.

Of course there are scumbags in the Pakistani army and intelligence services that are sympathetic to Islamic fanatics. Those people need to start being assassinated.

The kill ratio in Afghanistan is probably higher than 20-1, but anyway, something in Pakistan is going to pop soon, good or bad...

The only way to kill al Qaeda is to just do it. If the Pakistani army wishes to take part in defending their AQ extremist brothers, then send them all to meet Allah.

If the US army(The strongest army in the world) can not defeat the Taliban, then how is the Pakistan army going to do it?

Posted by: Chris | Jul 19, 2007 4:01:52 PM

By getting out a gigantic can of Raid and spraying the entire Waziristan frontier region...

Posted by: Jazz | Jul 19, 2007 6:56:48 PM

...then spray a case of Raid on Washington, DC and watch democracy really flourish in America.

Pakistan could have had the situation under control by now. But does it really want to?
Time the US did things alittle differently.
Go in and get them even in Pakistan. It would save lives.

Eliminate the AQ from the world mape . No permission from any quarter is necessary . It is the call of the time.

Imagine... It's 1947. Tojo is alive and well, since the US responded to the Japanese attack by invading Spain.

President Truman's top counter-Imperial Japan advisor says: "The answer...is what we want to do is work with our Filipino partners..."

What a sad, sick joke we're all living through.

Obliterate the tribal regions. If they want to live amongst terrorists and harbor them, they can die along side them. If the Pakistani Army fires on US troops, kill them too. Why is it that Bush's bravado is nowhere to be found when, for perhaps the first time, it could actually be useful instead of harmful.

What happens if Musharraf falls? Who would take over? Who would control Pakistan's nuclear weapons? Would the 'sympathizers' of the extremists distribute these nuke weapons to Al-Qaeda? We could be in a pre-WW III phase if that nightmare scenario comes to pass

Posted by: Yohanes | Jul 21, 2007 1:53:47 PM

US must go into the tribal areas of Pakistan and root out AQ and Talibaan from there. Pakistani army and Pakistani Intelligence Service ISI, will help AQ and Talibaan but US must confront them as well. If US keeps on "outsourcing" the job of root outing AQ and Talibaan to Pakistani army, then US will never ever get AQ and Talibaan. US must be prepared to accept heavy casualties as well, since that region is rugged, harsh terrain and full of mountains and hideouts perfect for gurrilla warfare and for AQ and Talibaan it's their home, they know each and every terrain there. They are well trained in gurrilla warfare, well prepared, well equipped by Dubai, UAE, Quatar and Saudi's oil money. They are masters in gurrilla warfare so US must be very cautious in confronting them. Let Pakistani army do the heavy job of actually fighting on the ground and let US provide the material, technological logistical and tactical, support. Let AQ and Talibaan kill Pakistani army soldeirs and let Pakistani army soldires kill AQ and Talibaan. US must provide all sorts of logistical, technical and tactical support but US must go in there and let Pakistani army do the heavy lifting job. Same should be appiled to Lebanon as well. Let Lebanese army kill Hesbollah terrorists and let Hesbollah terrorists kill Lebanese army soldiers. US and Sovereign Jewish State of Israel, keep a watch from sidelines and provide all support.

Yet again, the USA is threatening to violste the sovereignty of another nation. This is what got the USA into the mess it is in and all the other messes - the inability to mind its own business. Let's say that USA troops go into Pakistan. Thst will motivate the radicals to attack the US forces with the same devices as are being used to kill them in Iraq. So there will be another bloodbath and a war of attrition and more body bags sent home to the USA. Furthermore, Musharraf is on shaky ground at the moment and if he consents to the USA putting troops onto Pakistani soil, he could be deposed and a radical loony could become President and be in control of Pakistan's nuclear weapons. Just imagine Islamic radicals in charge of a nuclear arsenal. You can almost be guaranteed that Al Qaeda will get some of them then. The USA never ever learns - it stumbles from one catastrophe to another. However the ramifications from a US attack on Pakistani soil could open up a can of worms that will possibly result in a nuclear device being exploded in New York or Los Angeles.

So, the US should never have attacked Japan to protect it's security? Anyway, if the US takes action inside Pakistan, it will be with the "cooperation" of Mooshie...

Intel reports that are deemed "unclassifed" are filled with conjecture and now much meat. If the US Public was made aware of more of the intel reports there would be wide spread panic in a lot of cities. Remember afetr 9-11 people started buying gums and wanted to take up arms agains Al Qaeda? What happened to those supporters? Maybe they have forgotten?

Sending troops to Pakistan is NOT ENOUGH!!! We need to send Bombers and Cruise Missiles

Posted by: Jerry M | Jul 24, 2007 3:53:02 PM

US Intellegence agencies' inaccurate and pliable(read as directed by the US government Policy)reports have by now become legendary, What with WMD etc in Iraq and all. I often wonder about following:-
a. If they the whereabouts of AQ leadership in Pakistan, why dont they tell the Pakistani government and then see what is done about it? if these are mere speculations then, they better shut up.
b. What has US forces achieved in Afghanistan (beyond muncipal limits of Kabul) that they claim to want to achieve on Pakistani side of border?
c. If they really want to limit supposed infiltration of AQ elements from Pakistan, then why dont they agree to the most obvious way to do it,i.e. seal the border with a fence? Remember India has already done that along the length of Pakistani border and, Israel is in the course of building a wall to keep out Palestinians. Or is it that the US wants to keep the door open for their eventual assault on a sovereign nation?
