White House, FBI Agents Race to Disrupt 'Summer of '07' Threat
July 11, 2007 2:18 PM
Senior law enforcement officials said today that the growing signs of a "Summer of '07" terror attack on the U.S. have led the FBI to dispatch dozens of agents to track down new leads across the country.
The threat has also led the White House to begin a weekly meeting of senior law enforcement and intelligence officials.
The group met last Friday and will meet tomorrow in the White House Situation Room at 1 p.m., according to the officials.
Blotter Al Qaeda Cell in the U.S. Or On Its Way, According to New Intel
The White House has described the meeting as "not urgent" and "regular," but law enforcement officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com the new weekly sessions, to be held every Thursday, were designed specifically to counter the summer threat.
"The Thursday meetings will be regular, but the first one is tomorrow," said one official.
Dozens of FBI agents have been given a two-week deadline to run down more than 700 leads on an FBI "worry list," developed in the wake of the failed attacks in London and Glasgow. The list includes some 100 specific leads in the New York area, senior law enforcement officials also told ABCNews.com.
Although the White House says there is no credible, imminent threat to the United States, the origin of the intelligence that a small group of al Qaeda terrorists was headed to the United States came from a credible intelligence source, who in the past has been reliable, officials said.
The source of the intelligence specified the small cell was traveling from Pakistan.
The new threat comes as FBI agents were already trying to sort through a mountain of e-mails, jihadist message board postings, telephone intercepts and human source intelligence, in an effort to pluck an intelligence gem from the background of "chatter" louder than has been heard in any recent summer season.
There is so much terrorist "noise" that some agents and officers have already dubbed June and July a "summer of chatter."
Agents also have been running down financial leads and telephone records that could have linked several members of the recent failed London and Glasgow, Scotland incendiary bomb plots to North America.
Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

The mistrust of the current administration is so high now that I wouldn't be surprised if people blame THEM for any attack. Shame.

"Weekly Meetings"? doesn't sound like a good way to handle urgent terrorist threats.
Posted by: Padme | Jul 11, 2007 3:13:52 PM
Some will worry that the administration might help along an attack. But, much more likely possible false flag operations by a opportunistic 3rd party group (perhaps a splinter cell within a U.S. government agency or contractor) intended to bolster Republican support, contract acquisition, or related purposes. I hope that good investigators will consider this possibility. Especially, considering the Anthrax terrorists are still out there...

Hmm? Terror alert in the wake of failing Bush support. Coincidence or are they just playing on our fears to gain support once again?
Posted by: Fedup | Jul 11, 2007 3:46:49 PM
Whatever the cause of the announcement , better safe that sorry. But if we get hit because in six years they did not secure our borders, then they should be held criminally accountable and prosecuted.
Posted by: Andy | Jul 11, 2007 4:02:51 PM
I agree with Fedup. Mighty big coincidence that the fear machine is starting again when support for Bush is dwindling.
The problem with this admin is, they have no credibility. We have been fed so much bull that you can't believe anything anymore.
I think that is a danger to our security. It causes apathy.
Posted by: jPoz | Jul 11, 2007 4:04:29 PM
We should have been having "regular" meetings all along, don't candy coat the facts. I believe the American people can handle the truth, what a concept that would be!

I'm amazed that people put politics before national security. Some day intel will be unclassified and you people will learn. anyone look at the communist history? the same type of "mistrust" talk was going on. When that intel was unclassified what happened? oh yea... all the threats were as real as they were portrayed. Do you really think the Feds are going to let their citizens know every little detail? NO... enjoy your freedom while you can
Peace...

Fedup - I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think there are indeed attacks in plan from our enemies, but I find it somewhat amusing how this all falls upon us as a crisis - right at the time when Bush's numbers are low and he is losing his stand with Congress over extending the war in Iraq... Our government has a lot to answer for! I can't wait until November 08 - when OUR voices will be heard once and for all!

Doctor said, "The mistrust of the current administration is so high now that I wouldn't be surprised if people blame THEM for any attack."
You need to GOOGLE 'Operation Northwoods'. A rogue group in the US military planned EXTENSIVE terror attacks against US targets, and then planned to blame those attacks on Cuba to foment support against them. History tells us rouge parts of our government, i.e. a small group of people with the will and the necessary secrecy mechanisms, will kill their own people in order to promote an agenda.

I AM A VOTING 30 YEAR REPUBLICAN, BUT NO MORE. THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION IS SO DISHONEST THEY CAN'T BE TRUSTED. THEY WOULD INVITE AN ATTACK JUST TO KEEP THE NEWS OFF OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION. WITH OUR OPEN BORDERS WE SHOULD OF ALREADY HAD SERVERAL ATTACKS.

Bush's ratings??? Who cares about his ratings, he sure doesnt, it's his last term folks, he's done after this... I'm thankfull that we have not had an attack since 9/11. So what ever our feds are doing seems to be working... Only the weak fall into the scare tactics, and then if you are scared the terrorists have wone. What happened to proud, vigilant Americans????? This country has turned into a bunch of weaklings all suing over getting a hang nail at mc donanlds... It's WE the people that our destroying our own country and our rights, not to mention our poloticians that cant accomplish a single thing... time to stand up and break free of this folks... only WE the people can do it... After reading all of the posts to this thread, I have the ultimate solution to our problems. We should arm all of our Nukes, fire the ICBMs straight up and allow them to rain down on our own cities. America has become too stupid to govern itself.

Fedups comments are more of a "Crackup." Why would Bush try to bolster his numbers. He's a lame duck whether you like him or not. I think that it's not a coincidence that we have had no attacks since 2001 (thanks to all of the hard work of the CIA, FBI, military, and even the President who is the Commander-in-Chief). The same cannot be said in Spain, England, Bali, etc. I think it's ashame that we have lost respect for the position of President (no matter the party).

it's amazing.
for the past 3 years, the left takes every opportunity they can to thwart, obstruct, and hamper our nation's ability to defend itself
whether its attempting to shut down a terrorist prison in guatanamo, stop our ability to interrogate terrorists, kill programs designed to spy on terrorist communications ...etc etc...
those who hate the bush administration will stop at nothing in their attempt to pull it down. most shockingly they are putting our nation in danger.
this threat is real. the enemy is committed to killing our people, and is active in their planning.
and each time one of you posters obfuscates the threat by pointing to bush, or administration distrust or hatred, you are purposefully diminishing our ability to defend ourselves.
You are aiding and abetting the enemy
Shame on you

That's right Walt. That horrible media, which Bush planted in those vehicles when the war began, are reporting bogus things. I mean, at first, when they started reporting and it looked good for Bush they were great. But after a while, when they had the nerve to say things might not be all peachy? Well, they went bad. We're not having issues after all. It's all some bogus press thing.

IMO, these "warnings" originate from the real terrorists - factions close to, and part of the US security, military and intelligence apparatus. The media is complicit as well. Judging by the previous responses, people are beginning to overcome their naïveté in this regard. Our country has been hijacked by the military/industrial complex. al-Qaeada is a construct of the CIA and always has been.

I am so sick of IDIOTS saying how they dont believe that they think the announcement of a terror threat is legitimate because they think it is a plot by Bush to help his image. That is RIDICULOUS!! How in the heck does it help his image to say "Oh, well get ready for another attack"?! Answer: it does'nt. We as Americans should all be ticked off that we still even have to worry about terrorist!
Posted by: William Baker | Jul 11, 2007 7:14:45 PM
Republicans do not own defense and the troops! Bush is ending their lives with his own narrow minded and self serving policies. Bring back the black dress and the competent cabinet members and sound decision making that came along with it. What an absurdly frightning time we live in. THING conservatives...if you liked Ronald Reagan would he have EVER borrowed money from COMMUNIST china to go after COMMUNIST russia? We are borrowing BILLIONS from china to go after a country that had significantly less terror camps before we went in than we do now.

We have not had an attack since 9/11/2001. I am frankly suprised by that. It tells me that the Patriot Act works and our intelligence system is working. Of course, when the first attack does occur, some of the idiots who are leaving comments on this site will blame America and President Bush instead of facing the reality that millions of people in the world wanted to kill us before the Iraq war, and they still do.

As Bushco increasingly finds itself cornered like a wounded animal with GOP defections, sagging public support for the war, corruption charges and the lowest ratings for any presidency.inc since Richard Nixon's demise, I find it chilling that they are pulling out the FEAR CARD once again. This president and his co-conspirators have no respect for the rule of law and have referred to the constitution as a "godamned piece of paper." Beware the invocation of presidential powers to delay or void elections in this country. War with Iran or a terrorist strike on american soil (Gulf of Tonkin, anyone?) would set the ball in motion. Impeach Bush and Cheney now before it's too late.
Posted by: Jessica | Jul 11, 2007 7:34:08 PM
Obviously a ploy by the democratic congress, not GWB.... Their approval ratings are nearing "single" digits with absolutely no 'positive' legislation on the horizon! An attack on the 'homeland', depending on its severity, would be this failed congress' bumper sticker of "bringing the military home to protect its OWN homeland". The failed democratic congress and the media will successfully convince the American people that once again GWB is the blame. An attack could get the democratic-controlled congress' approval ratings back in the 40's........

More Pre-Fabricated Fear…
Chertoff has a “gut feeling” about a terrorist attack this summer? You don’t suppose it could be from those illegal aliens he’s letting into the country unchecked? Or is it the new “ 911” false flag operation designed to give Bush an excuse to use that new executive order that lets him become a full blown dictator…
Why is easy to read these guys? Could be they have a vast track record of lies and con jobs?
It could be a long hot summer.
Posted by: marco | Jul 11, 2007 7:43:12 PM
I agree with Dane Breitzig. His comment was true. Bush is on his way out and he does not really care about his ratings. The fact of the matter is that it has been almost 6 years since we were attacked and if there is one thing that the administration has done, it is keeping us safe. There have been many instances were plots were stopped were stopped. I do not agree with everything that Bush is doing but he has kept us safe. We need to keep in mind that the enemy we face does not wear a uniform and it is easier for them to operate when people distrust their government and want their President to fail just because of his party affiliation. We should all maintain a high state of vigilance and support our leaders and our soldiers. If , in our darkest hour, we do not, our country will fall. I love my country and everyone in it too much to see that happen.

Whether you trust this administration or not it would be wise to realize that America and it's interests were a target of Islamic terrorism long before Bush. Remember the Marines in Beirut? That was 1983 for crying out loud. 9/11 is the worst hit on a long time line, but it wasn't the first.
We'd better get our head and ** wired in the same direction or we're going to end up losers in a war that no non Muslim can afford to loose.
Whether you like Bush or not is not all that important. We need to stop all this hate and discontent among ourselves and save it for the folks who would love nothing more than to see a world without a US in it.
I don't care if the next leader has an R or a D beside his name, but he better be a dammned fine leader. I just don't see any of this in this current group of meglamaniacs who have made it known they want to be our next president.
We'd better stop putting up with mediocrity and incompetence and signal the political parties that we're not going to support just any old hack they throw up there.

"A" (there is more than one)definition of Fascism is when ordinary people no longer have the freedom or ability to determine what is true, or not. It is easy to fabricate the truth when the average citizen is paralyzed by the complexity of their daily lives - it all reduces to what we have in common: Nationality. A nationalist agenda feeds off of preoccupation with fear and works to solidify its' justifications by protecting "America for Americans," - Terror, immigration, healthcare, wars, outsourcing, port security, etc.
During Bush's tenure, I do not see any indication that ordinary citizens are able to tell truth from lies - now or in the past. Nor have I seen any personal accountability in those watchers who are charged with "watching the watchmen."

Does anyone find it a bit strange that the last episode of 9/11 came at a moment in time when the dollar index was sucking pond water. Have you been watching the dollar index as of late.We are on our 3rd strike with the dollar as of late and its in the 9th inning.. Guys its all about money and the dollar not about George's ratings. The Fed's and Politicos need an excuse when it falls through the floor and the enemy shall strike at the opportune time to collapse the US Dollar... There goes the neighborhood! Wake up .... We Americans are too busy playing with ipods and nintendo to see the real truth behind this show!

So far President Bush has done a good job of keeping us safe, which we NEVER thank him or give him credit for.
I don't know how he's done it with the borders open and with so many people over-staying their visas. Obviously there are terrorists among those people.
I'm trying not to dwell on Chertoff's warning, but it's pretty hard not to think about it here and there throughout the day.
I hope that people will take it SERIOUSLY and report anything that they see which doesn't seem right or that gives them the slightest feeling of uncertainty.

The level of ignorance displayed in some of these emails is truly disturbing.
The message from 'cbmm' deserves a response. First, apparently you never learned in your lefty foreign policy seminar in college that over 100 million people died because of communism in the last century. If you think the fight against communism was about fantasy, then I invite you to leave the bad old U.S. and go live with Putin in Russia. Ask Mr. Putin to declassify his files. If Russia is too cold for you and if you are little afraid of the KGB, then I invite you to go to to live under Mr. Castro in Cuba. And don't forget to ask him to declassify as well.
Next, to those of you who think that the warnings and preparations concerning potential terrorist attacks are only about politics, I suppose 9/11 wasn't enough to convince you otherwise.
Wake up people, the radical elements in the Muslim world want to create a Universal Ummah Wahida -- or global community run by Islamic law where the 'unbelievers' are made subject to the sword of Islam. Wake up people, the Cold War isn't over either. Just read what good old Mr. Putin is saying...

Many of these comments indeed prove that America will have to be hit again before some people will believe the threat from terrorists are real. Some promise to blame Bush is we are hit again, and yet these same folks refuse to give him a bit credit for no further hits in the past six years. Much of this is thanks to the constant degregation of the President by the Democrats and their handmaidens in the propaganda media.

Mass hysteria seems to pervade both the right and the left in your country. Take a deep breath everyone. Let democracy work without the histrionics. No 911-level attacks, no impeachment, no revolution or counter-revolution. My advice - turn off your computers for two weeks and take a camping trip, read a good novel, or meditate.

Not sure quite what to think. Barely a day goes by without reading about another NATO (re: US) airstrike in Afghanistan that kills a sizeable number of civilians because a war against al-Qaeda became a war against the Taliban while Bin Laden still runs loose, so I am willing to believe that the brutalities of the occupation of Afghanistan along with the notorious ones associated with Iraq, has increased the possibility of a terror attack on the US. I mean, really, how many people do you think that you can kill, torture, detain, rape and displace, before some of them decide, maybe, we ought launch an attack upon the ones who did this to us where they live? On the other hand, it is quite plausible that a terror attack would be allowed to go forward, one that could otherwise be stopped, in an attempt to create public sentiment for an attack upon Iran. And, then, finally, there's just the domestic political expediency factor, Bush trying to improve his status, and the status of the Republicans, by playing the fear card yet again. So, not really sure what to think.
Posted by: Richard Estes | Jul 11, 2007 8:20:43 PM
If the present administration has no credibility on terror, the previous administration was demonstrably out to lunch and the current democratic leadership has their heads in the sand with their rear ends up and targeted for missles and roadside bombs. Then they will whine and snivel and blame the present administration, when in reality the are the leading cheering section for the terrorists. Anything to gain power, no matter how many die. The end justifies the means. Especially if it is our young men and women in the military dying. They are in DC all protected by the FBI and the present administration. As for impeaching Bush and Cheney, just throw my money down a rat hole. It is purely pay back for the impeachment proceedings of the last White House occupant. I will work day and night so he does not ever go into the White House again. Enough Said.

Bush is so dumb that al qaeda is as strong in Afghanistan now as it was pre-9/11.
Really. THat was what the military reported today. Search google.
Bush first let bin laden get away (he farmed out the job to capture him to 3rd rate foreign troops on the take so he could use our troops for iraq). He then left way too few troops to actually fight AQ and the Taliban holdouts (again because he needed them to find WMD in Iraq...opps).
He has lied every step of the way. He is lying now. Guts can lie with impunity.

Bush has had nearly 6 years to secure the borders and done ...NOTHING! This Administration has gone after Islamofascists abroad while doing nothing to keep them from sneaking across our porous southern border. To suppose that terrorists will attack us ONLY in the war theater of OUR choosing is idiotic in the extreme. The threat is REAL that terrorists will attack us HERE. Here's what SHOULD HAVE happened after 9/11: immediately close our borders to Muslims who originate from countries where Christians and Jews are not even allowed to practice their faith FREELY and OPENLY! After all, if THEY discriminate on the basis of religion, then WE CAN TOO!! Indeed, let them keep their damned oil. At $70 per barrel, there's almost infinite reserves in Canada that I'm sure Canadians would willingly sell to us -- if for no reason other than that Canadians wouldn't mind becoming filthy rich. Better that the Canadians become rich from oil than that we keep sending so many billions to the Mideast, where the money is funding our own destruction by hate-filled fascists!

Americans are in a dangerous state of denial. Did we learn nothing from history. Winston Churchill was vilified and called a war monger for his trying to warn the British that Hitler was a dangerous sociopath and bent on conquering the world. We have millions of muslims telling us they are going to destroy us and Ben Laden has permission to kill 50 million Americans. And we do not believe them? The news media cannot see beyond politics and their favorite target is Bush. And all you idiots out there buy into this. When our cities begin to be destroyed and our economy with it and all you jokers are standing around wringing your hands and looking to the government to come rescue you. What then? If you knew more about history you would know that Roosevelt and Churchill had to secretly meet to prepare the country to defend itself against Hitler because the liberals refused to believe Hitler was a threat. Bush is a great president but it will take history and the passage of time to recognize that. If we have a history. If Ben Laden succeeds then civilization as we have known it will cease to exist.

I thought we were fighting 'em in Iraq, so we wouldn't have to fight 'em over here...How come we didn't finish the fight in Afghanistan?

While I agree that crying Wolf can be overdone, you people who express suspicion that the "evil" Bush would sound the alarm when his "poll numbers are down" may have a hard time explaining why this hasn't happened any other time in the last several years, while Bush's poll numbers have been chronically down. It's not an election year, either, and as mentioned above, Bush will not be running for President ever again.
Looked at another way, is there ANY time in the last few years LESS opportunistic to express concern about increased terror risk?

Unfortunately, I must agree with Peter. The evidence for the deliberate demolition of WTC-1, WTC-2 and, most particularly, WTC-7 is compelling. And it's not likely that guys working out of caves did that, though they may have done the plane hijackings. The lack of terrorist attacks in the U.S. since 911 (and the follow-on anthrax attacks) could indicate a super-efficient law enforcement effort, but it could also indicate that the 911 attack was, in fact, controlled by the highest elements of the U.S. government, military and intelligence.
And time is getting short for a hit on Iran.

With some of these conspiracy theories on this board, it's no wonder that the Islamic fundamentalists celebrated when the Democrats took Congress right alongside these whacky liberals.
Most liberals know deep down that their freedom and prosperity rely on the very people they hate (the military, business, etc.) This hatred is derived from their own cowardness and utter lack of ability. Most of them (not all) are sad people who create little value in today's society and need to feel empowered by creating conspiracies and denouncing courageous people.

Heed the words out of the mouths of the jihadists themselves, for they are truly convicted to achieving their ultimate goal, Sharia law ruling, their caliphate stretching across the oceans....usher in Armageddon.
You better realize and be prepared to do whatever is necessary.

To quote Terry Goodkind: "...to the people in the United States Intelligence Community who, for decades, have valiantly fought to preserve life and liberty, while being ridiculed, condemned, demonized, and shackled by the jackals of evil."

The above batch of comments is evidence that the public school system has totally failed. The people here except for a blessed few, believe that the new York Times tells the truth and all the clone stories by the rest of the media are true. They also believe that The President of The United States has been plotting against the country he leads. After the next attack some of the posters here may not be here. Will those left fight the enemy or blame thier own people? Where is Rod Serling? DO Do Do Do Do Do Do Do

Nothing would guarantee an attack more than appearing weak in Iraq. The quicker we turn tail and run out of there, the quicker we get hit again.

Lets hope the terrorists don't attack on a Friday. They'd have to wait a whole week to have a meeting on the attack!
What a bunch of clowns!

The people that serve in our Govt and Military are our neighbors, friends and family members....I can't fathom how politics can blind you to point of stupidity. Maybe your friends, family and neighbors would scheme to kill thousands of innocent Americans but I can't think on any of mine that would. Get real!

I always have to laugh when I hear an administration member, i.e. Dick, say that the fact we haven't been attacked since 9/11 is proof that their strategy is working. The simple reality, which you can freely find with some internet searching, is that al-Queda has no interest in attacking the USA right now. Straight out of their plan book is their primary strategy of attacking our (primarily European) allies, in order to weaken international support for the US. This is why there have been numerous attacks in Europe since 9/11 and none here. When they decide it's time, no doubt they will have no problem staging another attack in THIS country, with the utter incompetence of our federal government. I really resent the fact that I have to surrender my God- and constitutionally-granted civil liberties because the government is too incompetent to do a simple job.

It is patently obvious that the new battleground ought to be the tribal region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, and soon. We hear repeated references to that region as being a safe haven for those scumbag terrorists, yet amazingly we hear nothing about plans to wipe them out over there. Just what are we waiting for? Obviously the Pakistani troops, with their truce as to the "tribal leaders," will not be purging that area so someone else needs to. I believe the report about Al Queada reconstituting there - now what are we going to do about it? The lack of information in response to that question is infuriating and, in and of itself, terrifying.
