In a Hurry to Make Rockets: Two South Carolina Speeders Possessed 'Destructive Device'

August 06, 2007 12:36 PM

Inahurrytom_mn Two Egyptian nationals stopped for speeding in South Carolina Saturday evening were carrying precursor chemicals, used in improvised bomb-making as well in as model rocketry, lengths of plastic pipe and twists of hobby fuse, and model rocket launchers, according to investigators.

The speeding stop resulted in a complete shutdown of the highway for about 10 hours and the arrest of the two men on local charges of possession of a destructive device. No link to terrorism has been found.

When stopped along I-76 at 6 p.m., about seven miles from a U.S. Navy weapons station, the driver, who said he was a hydro-engineering major at South Florida University, told a deputy he was carrying explosives. When a bomb technician and additional officers arrived, the driver stated he and his passenger were using the materials to make homemade rockets.

The highway was shut down for a large portion of the evening, as bomb robots, bomb technicians and federal investigators began a careful examination of the vehicle's contents and continued questioning the two men at the scene through 2 a.m. The military facility houses the U.S. Consolidated Naval Brig, where enemy combatants have been held.

The two men have been held since their arrest in the Berkeley County Jail on charges of "possession of a destructive device," however neither local officials nor the FBI had indicated any link to terrorism.

In the vehicle, investigators say they found potassium chlorate and sugar, which when combined with a catalyst create what has been dubbed "instant fire" releasing heat, flames and smoke in a spectacular fashion. As a result, they are used in making fireworks and as a fuel for model rockets.

In addition a can of gasoline, PVC pipe, four hobby store brand rocket launchers and hobby store brand fuses were found, investigators said. The four PVC pipes contained an unknown substance. Also taken into evidence was a laptop computer, a GPS unit and Trac cellular telephones. The laptop computer was sent to the FBI lab at Quantico for analysis.

Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

What took so long for the story to run? CNN has it listed under news section Law with the title "Two held after South Carolina traffic stop". Not very interesting with a title like that.
Why are the words "Possible TerroristS" not used in either title. That is what these two guys will turn out to be, but then again, we will never know because not one media will follow up.

#1) Why were they in this country in the first place?, #2) Did there really need to be a shutdown of an entire highway for TEN hours?

Posted by: informedone | Aug 6, 2007 2:55:55 PM

These two are going to be named terrorists any way so there's no real point to mention it in the article.More and more are our liberties going to be taken away. Just watch and wait.

CNN and Fox News had this Saturday night

Why were they in the country? Why are you or anyone else in this country? I think this could very well be an over reaction by law enforcement......Just because these guys are from Egypt, do they not have a right to do a university science project?

Gee, maybe they aren't guilty of anything more than really bad judgment. Maybe they are budding terrorists - but that's what our legal system is for - sorting out the guilty from the innocent. In addition to "Possible Terrorists" the headline could have read "Possible Hobbyists"...

just about any household item can be used as a precursor i mean they found sugar and potassium chlorate which can be found on any corner, you can build a rocket out of hobby rocket supplies (which have actually propellants in them). Lets not use another racecard because they are arab or egyptians, they are engineering students if you goto texas im sure youll find alot worse things going on than homemade rockets. This story is an asbolute joke that why they are smiling in the picture they know nothing can be done. Here goes news pointing figures at more arabs

I agree with the comments above. Something is truly fishy about this story. Typically, the main-stream-media has been eager to get these types of stories out front real early. However, in this case, the media appears to be asleep at the switch.

My guess is that there is much more to this story than meets the eye. Perhaps an ongoing investigation??? Also, the story above does not discuss the fact that one of these Egyptian guys was trying to destroy the laptop when they were pulled over.

It took them so long because nothing became of this story. They werent' scary "evil doers". You're so quick to judge just because the article hangs on the words terrosit, bomb, naval weapons base, etc. So now if this was a white dad and his son in the same situation, you cant tell me the outcome wouldn't have been different!
LJ- #1 they have just as much right to be here as your ancestors who came here and wiped out an entire race of native americans. #2, Sure they did, they had to make headlines down there to keep people paranoid that they're gonna "follow us home"! But our good ole' boys caught em!! Your ignorance is what makes me ashamed to call myself an American. Kiss your freedoms goodbye.

Sorry to say but it is these type of individuals that "Fit the Profile" and ruin it for people of middle eastern decent to live truelyy freee in this great nation. If these guys are guilty then they must be treated as any other Domestic Terrorists. These guys don't sound like they were out to light sparkelers on the 4th of July.

I wouldn't rush to fast to judgment on these men.

It sounds like they are just a couple of guys who enjoy rockets for a hobby.....

ABC seems to be changing the story from other networks. One is from Egypt, one is from Kuwait. Both are students and therefore are here legally on student visas. Just because someone is from an eastern country doesn't make him a terrorist. Having the materials to make fireworks or a rocket doesn't make him a terrorist either. Thirty years ago my brother made homemade fireworks (they weren't very exciting) but he wasn't a terrorist. The two men cooperated with the police, from the beginning, even telling police they had fireworks in the trunk. Now here comes ABC "new" trying to sensationalize it by saying in the headline they were in a hurry to make rockets. And what's the big deal with them being 7 miles away from a Navy installation? Where I live, EVERYTHING is less than seven miles from a Navy installation!

Nothing in this story indicates any proof that these guys were doing anything but building model rockets? Why were they arrested? Seems like it was just because they were Egyptian?

Posted by: rlawrence | Aug 6, 2007 4:10:09 PM

I think it was a good idea not to make the leap to terrorism when you read the complete story. They are Egyptian and probably Muslim, but the story leans well into the realm of innocent model rocketry. I mean the FBI is on the scene and they are ruling terrorism out. From what I have read, I am going to agree with them. When you start screaming terrorism just because Muslims are involved is the very reason despicable groups like CAIR are in business. This just sounds like some dumb college students.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 6, 2007 4:16:22 PM

What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? Last time I checked, having a hobby was not against the law. And so far, nothing has been released linking these two men to any terrorist organizations. Suspicious, maybe...but get the facts first.

Note the beards. Not exactly a cool look. And, Jihadis tend to have beards. The one on the left does not have the characteristic mark on the forehead that comes with excessive Muslim prayer (Zawahiri has the mark). I cannot tell whether the one on the right has the mark.

Something about their demeanor in the arrest photos is troubling to me. If you were a resident alien Muslim who had been pulled over for speeding, had incendiary/explosive materials in your car, and had just watched the police shut down the highway for hours while they investigated your car - would you be giddy?

Posted by: Brian | Aug 6, 2007 4:28:15 PM

A few years back, I was really into model rocketry. If I had been stopped back then with some of the stuff that I required for my passion with todays environment, I'd now be classified as a terrorist.

Are we becoming so fearful that our future Einstein's and Goddard's will now be considered terrorist and their studies will be surpressed.

Posted by: Roy | Aug 6, 2007 4:33:03 PM

Wow JM, leave the legal system to sort out the Terrorist from the innocent? Just like the Duke Rape case, huh? Sorry, I just don't have a lot of faith in our system.

Those DA are out to get a little glory for themselves. Even if it means ruining an innocent persons life to get it.

It is funny to me that so many "science projects" are taking place lately.
