Anti-War YouTube 'Vet' Admits He Is Faker
September 21, 2007 3:11 PM
A Washington man, whose claims to have slaughtered civilians as a U.S. Army Ranger in Iraq were seen by millions on YouTube, admitted in federal court in Seattle today that he was a fake and a liar.
Jesse Adam Macbeth, 23, pleaded guilty to charges he faked his war record.
"He was in the Army for 40 days before he was kicked out of boot camp for being unfit," said U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Sullivan. "He was never in Iraq."

Macbeth's story of killing men and women as they left a Baghdad mosque included claims that he was a U.S. Army Ranger and had received the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in combat in Iraq.
His interview was translated into Arabic and distributed in the Middle East, said the U.S. attorney.
"Macbeth's lies fueled hostility to our servicemen in Iraq and here at home," Sullivan said.
THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS
Federal prosecutors and investigators with the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Veterans Affairs say they are in the midst of a crackdown on phony heroes.
"The phony war hero phenomenon plagues the American landscape and tarnishes the service of thousands of veterans who have served honorable," said Douglas Carver, special agent in charge of the VA's inspector general operation in the west.
World News Video: Phony War Vets
In another recent case, investigators uncovered a man who posed as a U.S. Marine Chaplain, officiating at the weddings and funerals of Marines.
Reggie Lee Buddle, 59, of Puyallup, Wash., was sentenced to two years of probation in July after pleading guilty to charges he wore a Marine Captain's uniform and insignia.
Buddle, who never served in the Marines, participated in an opening ceremony of the Washington state Senate last year, delivering the opening prayer.
Macbeth, the phony U.S. soldier who claimed to have committed atrocities, was sentenced to five months in jail.
He told the judge today he wanted to apologize to "the real American heroes."
He said he lied about his military record in order to get money and treatment from the VA hospital.

As a member of the military, I think this loser needs to be shipped to Iraq, dumped in the middle of no where, and be left to fend for himself. What a disgrace and a pathetic excuse for an american.

ABC is framing this as another example of the “phony war hero” phenomenon, which it isn’t. While scummy and pathetic, civilians who impersonate troops to steal the glory of the uniform at least aren’t besmirching the service. This guy faked his record so that he could sell the image of a tainted uniform. Throw the book at him.

The things that he has mentioned have certainly gone on to wide extent in Iraq but he should be given a high powered BB gun and a luminous balaclava and be sent to Iraq to get some experience that he can later truthfully relate!

Why blame the left for this polyp? I'm a liberal who served in the Navy and I'm damned proud of it. People like this jerk are in it for their 15 minutes of fame. Throw them in jail permanantly. They don't deserve the freedom earned by the blood of others.

The sad thing is that people believe this garbage and when presented with the real truth, they choose not to believe it. I spent 23 years in the U.S. Armed Forces, and this "couldn't hack it, wanna be" gets 5 months in jail, come on get real. Give him 5 months in a Iraqi jail and then see what he says about the U.S.A

Bush doesn't have a Vietnam record Ronnieray. Never claimed to.
But thanks for playing "All Bush, All the Time." Poorly.

This is a serious mental condition and can and obviously did cause serious damage to our national moral and physical injury on the battle field troops. I believe something must be done to protect ourselves and service personnel from individuals to organizations such as Move on.org from spreading their untruths. Be it monetary or imprisonment penalties for the knowingly person who obviously spread lies concerning their personal life’s activities that affected the nation or the battle.
Posted by: Williamwfh | Sep 21, 2007 6:18:35 PM
You must mean John Kerry's faked Vietnam record, who should be held accountable right alongside this jerk who is personally responsible for additional deaths of our soldiers, and all for nothing more than political advantage.
Throw him away.

I am sick and tired of the slams against the 'liberal-left'. I am a liberal and damn proud of it. I am also damn proud of our military and support them 100%. My brother, my brother-in-law, and my boss are all either active or reserve soldiers. I am against our military being used in this illegal, immoral war, a war that was based on falsehood and continues being supported by falsehoods.
Why is it that when I say 'Bring our soldiers home' I'm suddenly anti-military?
Posted by: Sharktattoo | Sep 21, 2007 6:20:46 PM

(2) I was only playing "footsies with the officer
(3) There are weapons of mass destruction
(4) We will prosecute who ever leaked the name of the CIA operative
(5) Jessica who?
Anyways, hang the guy for spreading lies, impersonating a war vet and causing undue harm to every soldiers serving in Iraq.

Posted by: Maximeliano | Sep 21, 2007 7:25:18 PM
"Why is it that when I say 'Bring our soldiers home' I'm suddenly anti-military?"
Because the military has a job to do, one that they all volunteered to do. For YOU to presume to demand to bring them home instead of having them actually do that job, is no kind of support.
You have the notion that they are children that need your protection. They aren't and they don't; and I say that as one of them. You owe them the respect they've earned, not your patronizing, insulting 'protection'.
If you are anti the military's mission, you are anti-military, case closed, end of discussion, and regardless of who's in your family.

Fortunately, this is America. And as Americans, we have EVERY RIGHT TO QUESTION THE CIVILIAN LEADERS WHO ABUSE THE MILITARY THROUGH THEIR INCOMPETENCE. Like the NeoCons and Bush Jr. who manipulated and tweaked this whole thing and ignored all the SMART generals...and now have completely screwed the pooch. How dare you question my patriotism...maybe you need to read the Declaration of Independence and Constitution again. They were WRITTEN by people who questioned - and didn't blindly follow - authority.

Hereby second Batfink's post. Over the years I've encountered a variety of wannbe war heroes from all walks of life. They are usually discoverable by myself and other vets within a few minutes of conversation - but unfortunately often not by a more general audience. As a former door gunner with the Marines in Nam, I am highly offended by any twerp who claims to be something they're not.

To those of you who are ignorant of the facts, or are just plain left-wing progressive liars: GWB was in the National Guard and did not serve in Vietnam. To say he was a "fake Vietnam vet" is just plain stupid. Maybe you have mistaken him for Sen. Kerry. Three bactine treated scratches, three Purple Hearts and four short month on active duty in Nam. Now there's a fake!

"And as Americans, we have EVERY RIGHT TO QUESTION THE CIVILIAN LEADERS"
Nobody's saying you don't. But joining a debate isn't risk-free to one's reputation, and shouldn't be. You can say whatever you want about our leadership. But others have every right to conclude that you're dishonest, just plain wrong, completely ignorant, crazy, possesed of the life experience of a 6 year old, willfully morally obtuse, an America-hater, or all of the above. We also have every right to take you for a complete idiot if you sound like one.
If you can't live with that, my advice would be to keep your opinions to yourself. Refuse, and you'll likely be hearing the opinions of lots of other people as entitled to theirs as you are to yours. And guess what: they might just make a much more convincing case than you do.

Setting the record straight:
I am a Democrat, but I am a moderate and not a liberal so I think that allows me to see things more clearly. On the supposed illegal and immoral war in Iraq lets\'s pause a moment and look back in history. We went into Iraq in 1991 to force them to withdraw from Kuwait. The agreements made which ended the conflict required that Iraq conduct itself in certain ways. Iraq agreed but began violating the agreement as soon as the bulk of our forces left. They refused to cooperate with the UN inspectors, they refused to obey UN resolutions and they continuously fired on our aircraft that was enforcing the no fly zones. Clinton was president during this time and he ordered bombing on several different occasions to try and force Iran to comply. The UN inspectors were convinced and they convinced several world leaders that Iraq was continuing the weapons of mass destruction program the had in place prior to the first gulf was. President Clinton was convinced that these programs were still in effect and stated this in more than one speech he gave. President Clinton would have invaded Iraq just as President Bush did had he been President when the Islamists attacked us on Sept 11. The people who claim Bush lied and people died would not be saying this about President Clinton had it happened on his watch. The ultra liberal left has done irrepairable damage to this country abroad by all the lies that they have generated. They lay it at the feet of the current president because they hate him so and their hatred is destroying us all. I hate President bush, I wish he had never been elected but I shudder to think what America would be like if either Al Gore or John Kerrey had been elected in his place, and I absolutely refuse to disgrace America by complaining about the President of the United States to any foreign audience or to publically make condemning statements that are picked up by a liberal media and broadcast to the world which bring shame and condemnation on our country and ultimately onto ourselves.

Well said, Ron! I agree with everything you said, with the exception of hating President Bush. I feel he has acted in the best interests of the citizens of the U.S. on Iraq, but has utterly failed us on our borders. He is selling us out on the immigration crisis.
As for this Macbeth yoyo, it's a shame the military did away with the firing squad!

Sharktattoo: Right there with you brother. I used to be a flight medic in the Air Force reserve and I now train others to do the job; I've seen the effects of this war up close and personal. I am also a liberal and it ticks me off to no end when I hear fat, lazy, slobs call liberals America-haters. Until they get off their fat butts and do something to EARN it, they have no grounds whatsoever to tell me I hate America. I wore a flag on my left shoulder long before 9/11 made it a fashion statement.

Elaine: "ABC is framing this as another example of the “phony war hero” phenomenon, which it isn’t. While scummy and pathetic, civilians who impersonate troops to steal the glory of the uniform at least aren’t besmirching the service." As a former AF flight medic I couldn't disagree with you more (with the exception of the scummy and pathetic part). How does this $&%#$^ NOT fall under the category of "phony war hero"? He faked having recieved the Purple Heart and PTSD to get money from the VA. I earned the medals I have. I earned my flight hours the hard way. I take it VERY personally when some clown like this portrays himself as a soldier. His actions VERY MUCH besmirch the service; his lies denigrate the service and sacrifice of those who have served.
Posted by: J | Sep 21, 2007 10:12:37 PM
This guy wouldn't have gotten anywhere if it weren't for the liberal left eating these types of lies up so they can make our Military look bad. It's the liberals who have been telling lies for the past six years, not Bush. It's a shame American's are so gullible and too lazy to check out the facts for themselves. If the democrats win in 2008 America will be finished. The democrats are as much enemies to America as are the terrorists.
Posted by: Robert Moon | Sep 21, 2007 10:43:39 PM
Failure to secure the border and his attempts to establish a North American Union is the reason I hate Bush. I support him on the war. This is a war we cannot survive losing. We have been paying the price for failure of resolve in Vietnam Lebanon and Somalia. That is part of the reason the mess in Iraq has lasted so long along with the antiwar sentiment voiced in this country. The world thinks the United States doesn't have the stomach for a prolonged war. The terrorist feel if they can hang on just a little longer and inflict a few more casualitys more that we will tuck our tails and run. Know what? If the Democrat party has their way that is exactly what will happen. We Democrats snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory in Vietnam, they will do the same in Iraq if they can but I wont be one of them then. We have been told that if we pull out of Iraq before the job is done the terroristd will follow us home. The anti war people laugh at this but... if it was to happen it will be Bush's fault, you can bet on that. The ultra liberal group called General Petraeus a liar and a traitor. If you think of yourself as a liberal and damn proud of it you will be thought of as they are, corrupt unprincibled perhaps even a traitor to your country. If that doesn't set well with you maybe you aren't as liberal as you think. Certainly move on doesn't have any respect for the military nor do they support our troops. The general is one of our troops also.

To Gordon Betts:
Why blame the left? Besides Macbeth, since September 11th, I can name the following people who have attacked the US military, the US presidency and/or the United States: Micah Wright,Jimmy Massey, Scott Thomas Beachamp.
1) Micah Wright falsely claimed to be a Ranger who witnessed atrocities commited by the US military in Panama. He routinely appeared at antiwar rallies and universities to talk about how evil the US government was and the things that he witness. Guess what? He never served in the military.
2) Jimmy Massey claimed that that Marines routinely killed Iraqi civilans purposely. Not only did he state this at antiwar rallies, but he also testified to this in the courts of Canada. However, a reporter named Ron Harris was embedded with the Marines at the time that these "war crimes" happened denies any such incidents happened.
3) Scott Thomas Beachamp has articles in the New Republic attacking the military. It turns out that the articles are all false.
What do these people have in common? They all lean left. Additionally, they are attacking the military, the president and the country with lies. These people are not like the average fake veterans who want either glory (like former congressman Strangefellow) or benefits (like the gallery of stooges in this article). Macbeth, Massey, Wright, and Beachamp have consciously decided to destroy the reputation of the United States government and military, both within and without the country. All four come from the political left. (Notice I said Left and not Liberal; they are different animals. John Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt were liberals; these four "men" are not.)

He reminds me of John Kerry, Murftha they all made up stories about war that was pure BS, Murftha basicaly called the Marine Hadifa murderers on false made evidence by TERRORISTS! I think both Kerry and Murtha are unfit as soldiers and human beings, I hope the throw the book at this other creep and the two creep senators! Just remember Kerry the disgraced Viet Nam soldier went the the Senate in 1972 with another so called soldier at told them about atrosities about burning villages shooting civilians etc, it turns out the so called soldier was never in Viet Nam or the Military he was PURE BS and the MEDIA BOUGHT IT HOOK LINE AND SINKER , and never thought about a backround check on him, Kerry who was the Viet Congs best friend knew this guy was a fraud, and Kerry is now a distructive digracefull, anti America, pro terrorist US senator, he is no better that the guy who lied who was deemed unfit, I think Kerry and Murtha all should be removed because they are low life lying excuses of human debris, I know Kerry committed treason in 1972. and Murftha should be removed because he is a worthless human being!
You ever wonder why Carter gave Kerry his honorable discharge papers in 1978, he was Dishonorable discharged in 1972 for conduct un becoming as an officer, with all his Anti America, Anti war Pro communist crap?
This unfit soldier who lied the MEDIA was the first to praise him for coming out without one shred of evidence this guy was real! We know who are Americans and who are not. GOP American, Demoncraps and the Media are anti American pro terrorists, surrender monkeys, commy Hippies stil living in 1969! Yes I question all the Democrats Patriotism, their Allience is with our enemies not the USA! Shame on the Media and the DEMONCRAP party!

In most cases like this I am very upset at this kind of behavior. However, in this one particular case I remember how bad and actually how silly his "testimony" was.
I also remember his sister posting in an on line forum shortly after the video came out that her brother was mentally unfit and was not a malicious person as a rule. She was trying to find him. I believe her.
This guy needs psychiatric help along with his punishment. He should make another video telling how he lied and get it translated, too. Then get some help. Perhaps in the future he will never do anything this heinous again.

My father served in Vietnam, where he was wounded in action & received the Purple Heart. He also served in Desert Storm.
My father served his country PROUDLY for 30 plus years & yet, it seem's the retirees/families are the "low man" on the list. While the people in this story have received monetary compensation-medical services-benefits that, they DID NOT earn, my father fights to get what he is entitled to as a Vet.
Where is the respect they deserve? The benefits they were promised when they joined? Serve your country for 20 plus years, and you are supposed to get the best available medical care/benefits. But, yet, when both of my parents try to do this, they are the last people considered. While I do support/believe that the Active-Duty soldier's are important, what about the Veterans & their families that came before them?
It's way past time to step-up America & support the Troops, both current & past!

Of course, at that time, nobody will admit to having either bought or peddled those lies, but that's the way it always turns out for liberals with no honor. This is the beginning concerning these fakers, sent the money back, and broke the deal after discovering that some 25 of their nonfiction books in the Special Forces/LRP/LRRP/Ranger genre were writing BS war tales according to the US National Archive records. One nonfiction author, inside all of his books claimed he earned 2 Silver Stars and 2 Purple Hearts for the same day's combat! A military impossibility, but only non-military types would believe such nonsense. Linderer posted a forged DD214 on a blog site and these authors gave me and my family hell for years. Now, watch them sweat it.

How is that? Is it an article of conservative faith that nobody ever dishonored the uniform? John Kerry was in the Navy, too, until he was dishonorably discharged. How does the fact that you have a true believer who was once a General shake the worldview that American elected leaders ought not be anti-American scum?
Me, I hope you do get him on the bill. It'd be fun. But frankly, so would pretty much anyone else in the running, so I'm not worried we'll miss out on the fun. It will be extremely entertaining political theater, whatever else it is.

If this has nothing with politics, why did Jesse Macbeth, Micah Wright, Jimmy Massey, and Scott Thomas Beachamp claim that they saw or particpated in war crimes that never happened? Why did these people go to the media repeatedly with their false stories? Why did they go to antiwar protests, usually as the "voice of conscious" of the "truth" about the US military? At least two of these "men", MacBeth and Massey, are members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, a political group.

I am a Vietnam ERA vet. I make note of the ERA part because I never served in Vietnam, the war ended while I was in training. I did a short Navy stint, then 2 years in the California Army National Guard. The only decorations I ever earned were a marksmanship badge and a Cal ARNG service ribbon. For the uninitiated, that is earned simply by signing your name on the dotted line and serving one day honorably. Because of the time frame, I didn't even qualify for the US Service medal/ribbon.
Having said that, when I help at funerals for the American Legion (the only time that I use any military decorations) I wear ONLY that to which I am entitled. Many of the veterans that I help bury were real heroes and I could never belittle or disgrace their valid service by pretending to have served and sacrificed at the level which they did.
My father was a Korean War vet, my stepfather was a WWII vet. Their combat medals, discharge certificates, and funeral flags are proudly displayed in cases in my home office. They earned them through their blood, sweat and tears. I display these mementos to honor them. To wear them when they were not earned should be a crime with harsh penalties.
Admiral Jeremy Boorda, Chief of Navel Operations under Bill Clinton, committed suicide when he was investigated for wearing the "V for Valor under combat" enhancement on his Navy Achievement and Navy Commendation medals. Although Adm Elmo Zumwaldt said that he was entitled to them, the Board for Correction of Navel Records, the final arbitrator of these matters, disagreed. The point is that Adm Boorda, a highly decorated sailor who worked his way from the enlisted ranks all the way to the top spot in the Navy, realized how serious even this small amount of padding to his record could be, and took his own life out of shame. He was much more honorable than these fakes who wear the decorations without having served. If they had any honor at all, they should follow Adm Boorda's example

J, first off, what I posted was copied from Hotair But I agree with the sentiment. Allow me to explain.
Your typical fake war vet will go arround telling people he is or was in the military because he knows that most people give respect and honor for that. So he seeks to steal the honor he has not earned. The typical faker will say "I served honorably" and expect to be given the respect due to an honorable veteran. The faker steals honor from the military because he sees it as honorable.
That isn't what Jesse McBeth did. He portrayed himself as a vetran and said that he killed innocent Iraqis in order to SMEAR the military. He never tried to portray himself as an honorable vet. He deliberately tried to portray himself as a dishonorable vet inorder to bring disgrace upon the military.
This is what you said about yourself:
"I earned the medals I have. I earned my flight hours the hard way. I take it VERY personally when some clown like this portrays himself as a soldier. [...] his lies denigrate the service and sacrifice of those who have served.
"
All this is true, which is why a faker will try to steal what you have, which is honor and respect. So a faker will pretend to be like you, because he sees you have something of value.
If Jesse had impersonated you, he would have instead said that while serving, he had killed innocent men, women, and children, defiled their corpses, and looted their mosques. And that all of his/your comrades had done the same thing. Why? Because Jesse isn't trying to steal your honor and respect. He is trying to destroy and denigrate it.
A faker tries to steal miltary honor.
Jesse tried to destroy it.

Hillary takes the White House in '08. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in James' house on that day. I've never acutally seen anyone go insane before, but in his case I'd have to say it's quite well deserved. ;)

Good to see that the complete collapse of the conservative agenda is taking it's toll. Meanwhile, the White House and Congress will belong to the Dems in '08. Hope your glorious memories of the "Permament Republican Majority" will keep you and the other failures warm. ROFL

I believe this guy actually told the truth. The rightwing govt made him recant his story. He is a hero!
Posted by: Bub | Sep 22, 2007 6:01:32 PM
There sure are a few right-wing psycho-nuts on these boards. I wonder why with an registration number of 100,000 members why the Young Republicans don't join the service??? The only people joining are from small-towns with no opportunities, criminals who need waivers and high school dropouts. You think if these lying sacks of crap would join then there wouldn't be a reason for the Army to have to enlist dropouts and criminals.

"John Kerry was honorably discharged. "
By Jimmy Carter. 5+ years years later. So -- during the intervening years, was he discharged other than honorable, or was he just AWOL for 5+ years?
Take a better look at where you get your own news, lady.

Hey James...your incoherent ranting makes me think you've been eating a few thousand of Rush Limbaugh's Oxycontin.

"If this has nothing with politics, why did Jesse Macbeth, Micah Wright, Jimmy Massey, and Scott Thomas Beachamp claim that they saw or particpated in war crimes that never happened?" 1) I'm talking about this particular case.
2) People say all sorts of things. That's why you have to keep an independent mind and think things through for yourself vs. simply assuming one political stripe is more pure than the other and feeding at the trough of the loud-mouths extremists from both sides.

Oh geesh, now we see the after affects of the Swiftboat ads. Lies repeated are believed!
Actually, I think it started with The US "will not participate in nation building" and "I'm a uniter not a divider." Now, who was it that said that?

How did this clown get past the front door of the VA in the first place?I'm retired Navy with 20 years honorable service and I need a truck load of paperwork just to get someone to talk to me.

Well I know A vitnam vet that come home after serving in Tanks and told A USAF General he picked up a rifel in vitnam so he wanted the Army Rifelmans Badge and the General got it for him.

"Oh geesh, now we see the after affects of the Swiftboat ads. Lies repeated are believed!"
Sure: Go with that. Because everyone knows that when someone lies about you in a presidential campaign, the smart thing to do would NEVER be to simply release the records that prove it.
