Dem Fundraiser on the Lam -- Again

September 05, 2007 1:52 PM

Demfundraiser_mn Less than a week after turning himself in for a years-old arrest warrant, major Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu failed to appear for a bail hearing today, and a judge issued a new warrant for his arrest.

Since 2004, Hsu has contributed more than $250,000 to Democratic candidates and raised hundreds of thousands more from other donors, according to public records.

At the hearing, Hsu's lawyer, James Brosnahan, said he did not know where his client was.

Last week, Hsu turned himself in and posted a $2 million bail.

Hsu, an apparently wealthy apparel magnate, had pleaded no contest in 1992 for what authorities have called a Ponzi-like fraud scheme involving latex gloves that cost investors more than $1 million, but never showed for his sentencing hearing at the time.

By failing to show up for today's hearing, he will forfeit the $2 million. If he is caught, he will be held without bail, according to the court record.

Hsu, whose criminal past came to light last week as attention focused on his prodigious fundraising efforts for Democrats, was supposed to turn in his passport at today's hearing.

Brosnahan told the court he had sent a law clerk to New York to retrieve Hsu's passport, but it could not be found. Brosnahan did not immediately respond to a request for comment.  It is not known where Hsu is or if he has his passport with him.

Hsu reportedly raised well over $1 million for Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign by eliciting donations from others and giving generously from his own pockets. Questions have been raised in the last few days about many big contributions from Hsu's contributors, which appeared incommensurate with the modest incomes of the individuals and families who gave them.

While suspicious, no evidence has surfaced that any donations are illegal, and both Hsu and the Clinton campaign have denied wrongdoing. Last week, Clinton's presidential campaign canceled a fundraiser Hsu was slated to host, and said it would donate $23,000 to charity, the same amount that Hsu had personally given her.

Other candidates, including Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Joseph Biden, D-Del., have agreed to forward Hsu's contributions to charity as well. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., however, said he plans to keep $6,600 he received from Hsu because the donation was not illegal, his aide said.

Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

Perhaps they should check local parks to see if there is a body, ala Vince Foster (a law partner and personal acquaintance of Hillary Clinton.)

This Hsu/Clinton scandal never makes it to the regular mainstream news. Do people ever wonder why? The lib media double standard is glaring.

Interesting. All the people who post comments here about how Bush is the embodiment of evil and corruption are strangely silent on this story

How stupid are the voters in Rhode Island that stand for this nonsense from Patrick Kennedy? First he drives his car into the Capitol office building at 3am while "going to vote." Next, he goes to rehab saying that he is addicted to pills. Now, he refuses to give back money from a wanted felon. What's next, killing a young woman and then running away from the crime scene? Oh, I'm sorry that is Senator Kennedy.

I am glad to see that the "culture of corruption" in Washington has really improved since the democrat party took over...dah right!

Hey. Finally a scandal that doesn't involve any Republicans.

Too bad for the Republican propaganda machine that it doesn't involve any Democrats either.

This whole Hsu-and-the-Democrats saga is absolutely knee-slapping, double-me-over-with-laughter "Hillary-ous"! Hsu should stay in hiding until next year's Democrat National Convention, and then bring a big fat check to the nominee. Say, can Democrats actually hold their convention outside the United States? Just wondering....he-he-he!

"Never makes it to the regular mainstream news"? Did you happen to notice the big, fat, "ABC NEWS" logo at the top of the screen?

Blame the liberal media for this? Ridiculous. The real story and hopefully embarrassment is how ANY law enforcement agency in this country could let this situation ride for all these years and not look for him. Talk about hiding in plain site. There is no telling how much money he has funneled into and out of special interest projects for God who knows and for what country etc...What has happened in this county to our law enforcement looking for felons that skip...? I bet the check bounces unless it was certified. And to not have him surrender his passport the same day. Let me see Hsu is now in a country that the US doesn't have extradition policies with! STUPID AMERICANS. What ever political party a person belongs to doesn't matter when IGNORANCE is rampant.
Where is Dwayne DOG Chapman? Go get him DOG!!

When you allow a criminal like Hsu to contribute to your campaign and then when discovered, your only defense is to claim ignorance, that is clearly incompetence.
If Hillary were elected and something happened to our country, are you going to accept the same incompetence? I want someone with a sense of responsibility. If she can't manage her campaign, how in the world can she manage a country? She can't!!

Hsu filed bankruptcy in "the early 90s". My bet is that when he was convicted of taking that million dollars from investors, he filed bankruptcy to avoid having to pay reparations. Then here we are, a few years later, and he has so much wealth that he can contribute a quarter of a million to Democrats? Unless you are funded by corruption (other governments or mafioso types), you would not be able to go from broke to obscenely wealthy in such a short time. YOU BET IT STINKS!

Is there a doubt in anyone's mind that the Clinton machine has something to do with his "disappearance"? He may not be offed, but I bet he shows up the day after Clinton loses. Where is he Hillary? Your campaign manager stated one day on TV that you were donating the Hsu contributions to charity, yet five minutes later in an interview with yourself, you said you were giving the money back to Hsu. What's it gonna be Hillary? Go ahead and put the money in the coffers, it will make it back somehow anyway. Or, will you use the William Jefferson (Louisiana)excuse, "I don't know how that $900,000 minus ten thousand dollars got in my freezer". I trust the Clintons about as far as I can throw them. I can't, too much baggage!

I'm curious as to the source of Hsu's cash. Any thoughts?

Bobby,

You're are a riot dude, stop drinking the Hillary Coolaid. It's more of the same: voter fraud, launder campaign money, sell out our national security, and nationalize the health care system. World workers unite.

Did I honestly see Republicans making fun of illegal fundraisers?LOL, how about Noe, DeLay, Gingrich, Ney, go ahead and laugh, nobody gets a bigger chuckle than me, when I read your holier-than-thou postings, ha-ha-ha. By-the-way, he was a fundraiser, so far, nothing illegal is anywhere near ANY Democrat, nobody showed favoritism of any sort, chuckle, chuckle.

My gut feeling on this matter is that the Contributor is Dead, and his body will never be found. Either the Clinton's had him killed or the Real Money Bags of this Scandal, the Chi-Coms!
Either way, this man will never testify before a Senate Committee on Campaign Finance corruption.
Hillary will Guarantee that!

Hillary and Bill Clinton are known by the company they keep. Too many thugs are their pals. America, Beware!!
