U.S. Embassy in Nigeria Warns Americans of Potential Terrorist Attack

September 06, 2007 1:07 PM

Usembassyinn_mn The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has issued a warning to Americans living in the country of a potential terrorist attack, telling Americans to be "vigilant to their surroundings."

"Potential targets include official and commercial installations in Abuja and Lagos," the warning states. The embassy is encouraging its employees and their families to "take an active role in their own personal safety by reviewing their security practices and making any needed changes."

There is no mention of specific timing or other targets beyond the embassy in Abuja and the consulate in Lagos.

Nigeria has not had the same problems with al Qaeda as East African countries, like Kenya and Tanzania, whose American embassies were bombed by terrorists in 1998.

But the country is considered unstable. More than 150 foreign oil workers have been kidnapped in the region's oil-rich Niger Delta region. Oil company rigs and compounds have also been bombed by the Nigerian militant group MEND, which stands for the Movement to Emancipate the Niger Delta.

The two-page warning gives Americans tips to protect themselves, including varying routes and times when traveling to work.

"Predictability leads to vulnerability," the warning states. "Be unpredictable."

The embassy also asks Americans to "report specific incidences of targeted violence to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos."

I pray for the safety of those who may be in harms way...

Will there ever come a day when people anywhere can not worry about terrorists? May God protect those who are now in potential harms way of these fanatical terrorists.

We serve one true God, and the same God will not ask a brother to another brothers life to show allegiance. "Terrorism is deception"

Reading through the write up on the terrorism alert on Nigeria, I do not believe in any way that a country like Nigeria can find itself in the possitions of the countries that have experienced these attackes in the past. With the professionalism of our security network, Nigeria is in a better position to repel these attacks. The troubles in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria should not be compared or attached to any form of terrorism, instead, the world should begin to look at it from the angle of self determination of the people of that region against exploitation. This struggle has no political or regious linage. Nigeria is a country blessed with resources and terrorism will fail in the country

the issue of global security and world peace will be a mirage and remain elusive unless nigeria is bulkanized to usher in peace on the african continent ravaged by illiteracy, poverty and disease.

over 85% of world crimes originate directly or indirectly from nigeria as a result of evil minded fraudsters and dubious wicked criminals masquerading as leaders that have made nigeria hell on earth - forcing her citizens to commit all sorts of crimes including terrorism - as most nigerians prefer dying in foreign prison cells to staying in nigeria that has no hope or future for them and unles the decomposing nigeria is split into 3 or more countries, the international community should stop wasting their time on global peace efforts. it is only the oil wealth drilled from the soil and waters of niger delta that has kept nigeria one otherwise everybody knows that nigeria is not one and can never be one. do not be deceived by the so called political reforms.unless there is peace in nigeria, there will be no peace in africa and by extention, no peace in the world.nigerians do not see terrorist attack as serious crime since the world have failed to speak with one voice to split nigeria - the continued silence is deadlier than terrorism.

I have been corresponding with a friend from the U.S. who's been working as a sub-contractor in a big construction company in Lagos. We have been talking every day until yesterday...the recording just said "the phone has been switched off."
Can u please advise how I can locate him or find out some information? I'm worried that something has happened to him.
I know he lives in Sabo Yaba.
thanks, RI
