Congress Flies Into Action to Save Perk
October 01, 2007 9:06 AM
Lawmakers from both parties are rushing to reinstate a perk they once enjoyed: the power to book multiple flights out of Washington, D.C., but only pay for the one they use.
The informal arrangement was said to accommodate lawmakers' erratic schedules. Last-minute business on Capitol Hill can keep Congress in session, delaying lawmakers' trips home from late one evening to early the next morning. Some airlines offer a similar perk to loyal fliers, but most do not.
Two weeks ago, an airline lobby group determined the perk appeared to be a violation of the gift ban that was part of the new congressional ethics law.
THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS
Airlines "could do for members of Congress what they would do for their best passengers -- but not more than that," explained David Castelveter, a spokesman for the Air Transport Association, which made the determination.
Now, Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Robert Bennett, R-Utah, are pressing a Senate panel to act and officially reinstate the perk, their offices confirmed. By issuing its own interpretation that the ethics law does not apply to the multi-booking perk, the Senate Ethics Committee would reassure lawyers at the Air Transport Association.
Some Hill watchers are nonplussed by the flap.
"Quite frankly, it sounds like lobbyists for the ATA are trying to ridicule the new ethics rules," said Craig Holman, an expert with the Washington, D.C.-based watchdog group Public Citizen. Holman said he found ATA's determination "absurd."
Castelveter demurred.
"We're in the process of trying to understand, on behalf of our members, what the new rules mean," he said. The spokesman noted that under the old ethics rules, lawmakers were held liable if the law was broken, but under the new rules, signed into law in July, the airlines would be held liable.

Of course the fly into action when it involves them but anything else they just stand around and talk.
Why should they be special over the little guy? Is that why flights have gone up so high in price because the little guy is paying for the tickets that the Senate and Congress do not pay for I think there is something wrong with this picture.

Once a crook always a crook, once a politican your still a crook, just more pitiful and slimier.

They have to do something, they haven't got Jack Abramoff anymore !!!

The airlines and Congress have been in bed smooching for a long time but the honeymoon is just about over. A few more years of non refundable fares and stealing the publics money, detaining any passenger who argues, the latest one found dead, should eventually lead to a good solution for these lofty personalities.

Ironic how quickly they act when one of their perks is at stake.

How disgusting! Congress thumbs their collective noses at We the People, fail to defend the borders, fail to support our loyal brave troops. Cannot seem to comprehend America is at war, trying to save our necks from being slashed by a radical 13th century religion that wants to take over the world, but watch them run! Watch them run for the money! Our Money!!!!

Well, I think we ought to solve this problem once and for all by giving every Congressman and Senator his or her very own private jet, so they can come and go as they please. After all, is it really fair that only ONE Congresswoman, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, get to enjoy that perk?
Let's see, for 534 Congressmen, the total bill for that should be around $5.5 - $6 billion dollars just for the planes, not for fuel and maintenance. But hey, one or two hefty tax increases from a Democrat-controlled Congress ought to just about cover it!

Of course this is a gift. When was the last time the airlines didn't charge you the cancellation or change penalty when your plans (personal or business) suddenly changed? When Congress has to live like the rest of us (health care, pensions, airline perks, etc.) maybe then we'll see value coming out of Washington.

The undeserving still abusing power. I have contempt of congress. Cut taxes and cut spending now!
Posted by: fred | Oct 1, 2007 11:47:17 AM
What I would give were they to show even a fraction of their interest and determination for saving this perk to the issues which concern the people they allegedly represent !!!

Vote EVERY incumbent OUT....and then kick out ALL the lobbyists.

Wow Congress can leap into action when one of their perks are in danger, but let "We the People" need an immediate response - good luck. When you consider how little time Congress spends on the peoples business it is amazing that anything gets done. Especially when we are in an election cycle. I would imagine that when this "important" issue comes up for a vote everyone on the campaign trail will be there for the vote, but let health care - the war - a transportation bill - border security - campaign finance reform - come up for a vote those running for re-election are the ones that can't find time to cast their vote. I don't care how they vote, but since they are on "our" payroll they should show up occasionally for their jobs.

Prez now has on order 24 new-design coptors just for HIS use. Perhaps he could "share"?
Or maybe Rumsfeld's 911 Washington spy plane is now available for use?

I think that the congressmen and senators should be put on social security like we have and see how fast it gets fixed

"But hey, one or two hefty tax increases from a Democrat-controlled Congress ought to just about cover it!" Ironic Guy leaves out the Republican controlled Congress who did the same thing! How incredibly naive some people think we are to buy that!Realistically, I think they should be able, as our elected representatives, to change flights because of "official" reasons! To do it because you can is not good enough however! I think perhaps they should have to file something with the Congress what bookings and why requested! As far as Nancy Pelosi, Many Republicans don't think, even though #2 in line to take over the presidency, she should have an aircraft. Well all the Republicans had them, and many MUCH lower in stature than she! Grow up!

What do you expect from the "crook club"
If it was an issue that didn't affect them there wouldn't be enough of them around to have a roll call but when it comes to their special goodies they are like ticks on a hound dog.

FIRST I READ WHERE GOVERNMENT WORKERS ARE UPGRADING THEIR AIRLINED TICKETS TO
FIRST CLASS. NOW CONGRESS AND THE SENATE
ARE BOOKING TWO FLIGHTS AND THE TAX PAYERS ARE FOOTING THE BILL AND THEY WANT TO CUT SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICAID
ITS TIME TO GET RID OF THE GARBAGE IN WASHINGTON AND GET THE NAMES OF CONGRESSMAN AND SENATORS AN VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE
Posted by: CHARLIE Mc | Oct 2, 2007 11:27:52 PM
Their swift action in behalf of one of their perks shows us how to solve the threats of insolvency for Social Security and Medicare - put our Congressmen and Congresswomen on Social Security and Medicare instead of their special retirement and health care plans. Then they would take swift action to resolve these issues that are vital to millions of Americans.
