House Dems Press Rice on Iraq Corruption

October 12, 2007 11:56 AM

Housedemspres_mn A quartet of powerful Democratic congressmen accused Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice of hiding information about corruption in the Iraqi government and urged her to reconsider her "misguided" efforts Friday.

Citing the sensitivity of the information, State Department officials have in past weeks declined to answer lawmakers' questions about corruption in Iraq, instructed others to withhold information on the topic and retroactively classified once-public documents, noted Reps. David Obey, Wisc.; Ike Skelton, Mo.; Henry Waxman, Calif.; and Tom Lantos, Calif., in a letter to Rice.

"It may be reasonable to classify some information," conceded the men, who chair the House Committees on Appropriations, Armed Services, Oversight and Government Reform and Foreign Relations, respectively. "[B]ut the wholesale...classification of all information is wrong and a misuse of the official classification procedures."

The letter comes amid growing alarm that fraud, bribery and intimidation have become commonplace within Iraq's nascent bureaucracies, undermine U.S. efforts to help Iraqis establish a stable democracy and may even support anti-American insurgents operating there.

The men cited recent comment by the former chief of Iraq's anti-corruption unit, who earlier this month told Congress that some Iraqi government operations were "effectively financing terrorism" in the country.

"We urge you to reconsider these misguided directives so that we can work together to find solutions to the corruption that may well be funding attacks on our troops," the lawmakers wrote.

State Department spokeswoman Nicole Thompson said she could not comment on the letter because she had not seen it.

The congressman are making a good point it's completely useless to stay in Iraq and try to bring stability if the Iraqi government is corrupted and nullifying our attempts.I know that everyone would like to see us leave that country eventually not stay and keep up a useless fight.

There is only one person inherently responsible for the mess over there. I feel sorry for Rice as an individual; she will be yet another pawn sacrificed in order to keep this regime alive (oops, did I say "regime???"). Too bad the pawn supply is starting to dry up............the Clinton family may have little to work with when they're back in the White House come Jan. '09. But, there's a sucker born every minute, I suppose. Are we as a nation THAT blissfully unaware? Or has the apathy around here reached new levels?

And, why doesn't the Congress assign the job of correcting the Iraq corruption to "Earmaks" John Murtha, who is an expert on corruption.

Our electrd congressmen do have the right to examine "secret" documents? If so we need to amend the constitution to protect we the people.

Condoleezza Rice should be the next president.

Why are we there? Can anyone come on this thread and say that they expect the troops to win in that mess? Does anyone here think that the Shia and Sunni are going to share the (oil) wealth together. One group is in charge and the other group wants to have control. It was that way when we went in. Gonna be that way when we leave. Mz Rice will be yet another fall-guy for this administration.
