New Orleans DA to Resign

October 30, 2007 5:08 PM

Neworleansda_mn New Orleans District Attorney Eddie Jordan told his staff today he would resign Wednesday in light of a $3.7 million discrimination verdict against his office and an increasing murder rate since Hurricane Katrina, the AP reports.

Back in August of 2006, Jordan bristled at criticism and walked out of an ABC News Nightline interview when told that law enforcement officials were critical of his handling of his office.

ABC News' Brian Ross was interviewing Jordan as part of a report examining the state of the New Orleans justice system one year after Katrina, to be broadcast on Nightline.

Since Hurricane Katrina, there has been growing criticism of Jordan's office by senior people in law enforcement who say, even with the acknowledged problems caused by Katrina, the District Attorney has not efficiently dealt with a huge backlog of cases, estimated at more than 3,000 in August of 2006.

Jordan told Ross his questions were "stupid," when Ross asked Jordan to respond to a comment made by U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in an ABC News interview earlier this week.

"You need to have an effective police department, you need to have the courts operating effectively, you need to have a local prosecutor who is doing his job," he said.

Brian Ross: Do you think he's talking about you?

Eddie Jordan: No, because we're doing our job and I have the evidence to support it.

Brian Ross: You don't take this then as a criticism from Washington?

Eddie Jordan: I don't take this as a criticism from Washington because, as I've said before, we are taking care of our responsibility. This is ignorance and stupidity on the part of people who don't know how our system works.

At that point, Jordan's aide stepped in front of the cameras and announced she was ending the interview.

At that point, Jordon protested that Ross' questions were "stupid."

Brian Ross: They are honest questions, sir.

Eddie Jordan: They're stupid; they're not honest questions.

Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

Believe me when I tell you that the people of New Orleans are glad to be rid of the Eddie Jordan. I can still remember the shock I felt when he was elected. I was not shocked by everything that has happened since.

The citizens of Orleans Parish are VERY happy to be rid of the incompetence of Eddie Jordan. Maybe now we can get the rebuilding going in the right direction. Now we need a mayor that wants to rebuild the city in a quote "non-Chocolate city way" America don't give up on New Orleans we need your help. We're doing all we can to get rid of these fools in government. We have a new governor, we need the mayor out of office too.

New Orleans has always had its share of problems long before Jordan became D.A. I'm sure those problems will most likely continue long after he is gone. Isn't New Orleans a city where LE were caught guarding the warehouses for drug dealers a few years back where the drugs dealers stashed their drugs? Where it was revealed that LE were openly beating citizens on the streets of of New Orleans without fear of being reported? Where citizens who dared to report police brutalities were threated? Had hits taken out on them, where one hit was actually carried through and a woman was gunned down in the street for reporting having witness a cop beat a man almost to death on the streets of NOLA? The hit, most likely as a favor by one of the drug dealers the cop was working for.

He must be a Democrat, or else ABC would have said "Republican" in the first sentence.

I hope that the people of New Orleans could get over the racial barriers and party affiliations to vote for people who are most qualified to serve in government posts. The rebuilding of the GREAT CITY OF NEW ORLEANS requires that each person overcomes certain affiliations and racial loyalties. New Orleans should not be termed as a "chololate city" or "non-cholocate city," but must be recognized as a city of great diversity where people of all races embraced each other and assisting one another to fight problems such as crime, poverty, and racial tensions.
