Three More Saudis Named Terror Financiers by U.S. Treasury

October 10, 2007 1:55 PM

Threemoresaud_mn The U.S. government today named three more Saudi financiers they believe are supporting terrorist groups from Saudi Arabia. So far, not one person in Saudi Arabia identified by the United States and the United Nations as a terror financier has been prosecuted by the Saudis.

"These three terrorist financiers were instrumental in raising money to fund terrorism outside Saudi Arabia," said Stuart Levey, the undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence at the Treasury Department.

"In order to deter other would-be donors, it is important to hold these terrorists publicly accountable," said Levey.

The individuals, Abdul Rahim Al-Talhi, Muhammad 'Abdallah Salih Sughayr and Fahd Muhammad 'Abd Al-'Aziz Al-Khashiban, all allegedly provided financial support to the Abu Sayyaf terror group responsible for multiple bombings and kidnappings in Southeast Asia.

In 2001, members of the Abu Sayyaf group kidnapped American citizens including the missionaries Gracia and Martin Burnham. The Burnhams were held in the jungles of the Philippines for more than a year, and Martin was killed during a rescue attempt.

One of the men named today, Al-Khashiban, gave the leader of Abu Sayyaf $18,000 to conduct an attack on either the U.S. or Australian embassy in Manila in the early 2000s. That plot was later disrupted by Philippine authorities, according to the Treasury.

By being named to the Treasury list of terror financiers, any financial assets that are under U.S. jurisdiction will be frozen.

Last month, the Blotter on ABCNews.com reported on the longtime frustrations of U.S. officials who say the Saudi government continues to look the other way at wealthy individuals identified as sending millions of dollars to al Qaeda.

The Saudi embassy said last month that "Saudi banks have complied with freeze requirements and have initiated investigations of transactions that suspects linked to al Qaeda may have undertaken in the past."

It seems that no matter the proof supplied to the Saudi Govt. there will be no action taken. Oh yes they comply with our treasury regarding freezing assets - if we can get to them, but that is little or no help. The Saudis are not our partners in the war on terror; what they are is terrified of the likes of Al-Queda, and what it means to the Saudi Royal family. The US has been invited into Saudi Arabia for their internal security, oh yes and they allow our military to operate from their country, but with restrictions. The US being so dependant on their oil supply we have created a symbiant relationship where one cannot survive without the other. The Saudis greatest fear is that their radical islamic enemies (Shites) would gain a stronger foothold, and further threaten their feudal society. We will be allowed a presence there until the threat is gone or controlled to a point the Saudis feel comfortable, and when that happens we will be asked to leave so fast it will make our heads spin. In the Middle East the adage "My enemies enemy is my friend" is a constant, and our percieved freindship is one of convience(sp). So we can wring our hands and complain about the Saudis supporting terrorist, but the Royal family could care less about our concerns as long as they feel safe with our forces there.

That is the wrong way to give the Saudis a list of names... you should use bold text with smiley faces [:)] in them. Maybe add a little glitter and some ribbons in then and then give it to then in a colorful envelope. One look at that and the Saudis will bring the them right to our door steps. Or how about one of those singing hallmark card? Now that will guarantee a response !

Bush Jr. must be hopping mad. Leave his "eternal friends" the Saudis alone!

That country is the only reason that America hasn't converted to renewable, and ecological fuels yet. Once our ties are severed there, only then can we be a free America again.
