Ambush: Video Shows U.S. Troops Being Hunted, Killed
November 12, 2007 8:21 AM
Dramatic new video shows how American soldiers in Afghanistan are being set up for deadly ambushes after trying to make peace with village elders in Taliban-controlled areas.
The effort to win the "hearts and minds" of village elders in the Korengal Valley of Kunar Province in Afghanistan has proved to be a dangerous one for U.S. troops, with elders often suspected of tipping Taliban fighters to the soldiers' schedule and whereabouts.
The video to be broadcast tonight on ABC News' "World News With Charles Gibson" and "Nightline" was shot by "Vanity Fair" contributing editor Sebastian Junger and photographer Tim Hetherington embedded with the 2nd Platoon, Battle (B) company of the 173rd Airborne on a joint assignment for ABC News and "Vanity Fair" magazine.

Six soldiers from another 173rd Airborne company, C Company, 1st Platoon, were killed in an ambush over the weekend in Afghanistan as they returned from a Shura, a meeting, with village elders.
The new video shows the men of the 2nd Platoon of Battle Company twice walking into traps after leaving meetings with village elders, one called to discuss details of a U.S.-financed water pipe project.
"We went from being the hunters to the hunted," said photographer Tim Hetherington who was with the troops when they were attacked last month.
Good Morning America Video: The Forgotten War
Three U.S. soldiers were killed and six others wounded in the October ambush. A medic was killed in July as the platoon left a similar meeting with village elders.
The video also shows a contentious showdown between U.S. commanders and village elders, who deny hiding Taliban fighters.
"Are you calling me a liar that I got shot at last night?" Lt. Matt Piosa, the 2nd Platoon leader, shouts at the elders.
In the five and a half months the 173rd Airborne has been in Afghanistan, it has been involved in an estimated 450 enemy engagements, commanders say.
Look for more in "Vanity Fair's" January issue on the newsstands in December.
To Send Letters to the Soldiers:
Many of our readers tell us they want to send their wishes to the soldiers of the 2nd Platoon, Battle Company, 173rd Airborne. As the forward unit in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, they are being profiled for a special project appearing in "Vanity Fair" and on ABC News.
Letters can be addressed to:

I can not believe that while I was watching this the young soldier who received the mail from a debt collector, what is wrong with our country when we have nothing better to do than send bills to our troups. I am truley sorry for the company that holds such little regard for the soldier fighting for our country, but holds the dollar in such high regard. SHAME ON YOU!!!

To think that Afghanistan was alrady secured. thanks to Bush's incompetence, the Taliban is gaining ground again.
Afghanistan was hiding Bin Laden who was responsible for 9/11. Saddam Hussein hated Bin Laden, and yet he is the one that we kill! We have more troops in Irak than Afghanistan, I dont suppose the oil have something to do with it?;)

Congratulations on this exclusive. It's great that you could air this video on national television, but should you? You are showing what I assume is graphic footage of young Americans getting killed. I do not see how airing the video achieves anything. I will be one person who will not be watching ABCNews tonight.

My son is now in his second tour in Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne. I would also like info on getting a copy of "The Forgotten War".

If you can't think like your enemy in Afghanistan then your going to be the hunted. We are not the only ones who can make alliances.
Keep your friends close and your your enemy's even closer.

I am not a bit surprised to hear things like that, we have been there way too long. We are no longer welcome there, the only time that they will need us there is when we leave. This is another war that we had to right being there at all but we are now we need to get out NOW.
GOD BLESS ALL OF OUT INNOCENT MEN THAT ARE THERE AND I AM IN HOPES EVERYDAY THEY WILL RETURN VERY SHORTLY AS I AM SURE HE IS EVERYDAY!!!

This horrified me. My son is going into to Afganistan next year. Thanks to Bush not ending the war. It will be his 3rd tour the first 2 were in Iraq. How much longer is this going to go on. This is like playing russian roulette with our childrens lives.

What is ABC calling this the forgotten war? I haven't forgotten about it. It is ABC's choice whether or not to cover it. It was they who haven't been covering it, and with this lack of coverage THEY are the ones who have forgotten it. Now they are telling us that WE forgot it.

no way to fight a war!!!!!!!!!!! Get people from the UN to go in there. our troops are not social workers as you see. they go to make peace and get killed by this people. they do not care about us. set up a 10 mile free fire zone along the border with Pak. and shoot anything that moves. if we do not fight a war like a war we will lose by attrition alone. time will prove me right. look at the russians. we will never stop this as long as these countries have no or poorly defined and enforced borders to the terrorists

We should send some of these braniacs posting messages here to Afghanistan. Obviously they know better than the Cmdr in Chief, the generals and every soldier in the battlefield.I think the war will over in no time, what say you?
Posted by: FRANK S. | Nov 12, 2007 10:36:01 AM
The oil? The energy industry is doing quite well these days. No one ever said we invaded Iraq to make things better fo you and I. They said we invaded iraq for the oil companies. So I will ask the question. Have things gotten better for the oil companies? Absolutely yes! They also have set up contracts to sell Iraq's oil when the oppertunity presents itself.

Bush's fault? You people make me sick. You hear a story about the enemy being the enemy and you go political. We should all come home and play nice with the Taliban? They would never come here to hurt us if we had a Dem in the White House?
I agree about PRESIDENT Bush being a poor leader in this war. I do not agree that you are better for your slurs and appeasment mindset. Highminded ignorance!
So you can understand I will vote democratic in this election. Be an American first!

Yes Afghanistan is the forgotten war, all the attention is on Iraq, everything is on getting troops out of there. What about our brave men and women who are loosing their lives in Afghanistan. The 173rd ABCT has lost 24 heroes since being in Afghanistan. Just remember all of you out there that it is by the blood of these young people and all who bravely serve that we have the freedoms we have.

To those who think we are "losing" in Afghanistan. If we pull our troops out, we win. The Afghani's will once again be mired in dishonesty, brutality and filth. They can accept help from the West to advance themselves, or they can settle for a brutal form of Islamic government. The Afghani's who set traps for our troops are defeating themselves.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for you because it costs you too much to fill up your gas guzzling suburban?? Seriously? Also, the notion that we would go there for oil is not disprooven bythehigh price of gas. The oil companies and the administration in Wash. that does their bidding do not care about the american people. they just want to control the oil so they can squeeze every ounce of profit out of us.

Agenda-driven, media hacks call it a Forgotten War because they conveniently 'forget' to report the good news and focus only on the sensational stories. The newsroom mantra, "if it bleeds it leads" is a handy substitute for talent and balance.

Afghanistan has the reputation for being the "graveyard for foreign armies". In the 19th century the British attempted to retreat from Afghanistan after a failed three year occupation. Of the force of about 14,000, of whom 10,000 were civilians, only one individual managed to escape; all the rest were massacred. The Russians entered Afghanistan as the ally of the existing government. We know its fate; this failed adventure was probably a significant contributing factor in the downfall of the Soviet Union. Watching a documentary on the life of the Afghan tribesmen, in struck me that in that male dominated warrior society, the men would rather fight than make love; how can the decadent West conquer a people such as that? Our soldiers have one major strike against them from the get go: they just want to make some money and go home and have as normal a life as possible. They don't live to fight. I doubt very seriously that the Afghan warriors have much respect for our troops.

it does not take much to be smarter than our current commander in chief with his 'gentleman's c-'s' - he is no scholar nor is he a patriot - gwb knows all about smiling to your face and sticking a knife in your back - he has done it to his own country the constitution of which he swore to honor and protect - he should be tried for high treason - but he could legitimately get off on an insanity defense - he is a sociopath with no sense of right/wrong - i wouldn't shake hands with him - he has brought shame and dishonor on our country - we are a mighty ship in danger of foundering - our founding fathers would be shocked and dismayed as i certainly am -

Don't forget, their are more NATO troops in Afgan than US troops. Its a NATO run mission. Do the people on this board hate America more than NATO? Please, someone give the board some military strategy suggestions as to how to deal with radical Islam in Afgan. I am sure we are all ears.
Don't forget there are 30 countries with armed soldiers in Afgan.

What do you expect? Do you remember Abu Ghraib, Haditha, etc., in this war? Do you know of the millions of Iraqi children who have been starved and killed by US sanctions? Have you read of Arab and Muslim grievances against the US and Britain? Any idea of how many civilians have been killed over decades with weapons stamped MADE IN USA?
Wake up. Enemies 'R' US.

I love how the idiots at ABC call Afghanistan the "Forgotten War." Isn't it the media who does the reporting? So wouldn't it be true that the media are the ones who have intentionally dropped the ball in reporting the war in Afghanistan? Also, I agree with Frank S., send all of these blithering idiots who seem to know how to fix the situation. I serve in the Air Force Combat Comm, how about the rest of you nay sayers?
Posted by: James | Nov 12, 2007 11:25:21 AM
When do Americans show videos of Americans being hunted down? If this were Taliban propaganda, it would be understandable and it is a disgrace that ABC does so. The war is not a Bush war, but it is an American war and a bit of concern for "our side" is the only approach American outlets should be showing.
Posted by: Peter C | Nov 12, 2007 11:25:38 AM
What we need to do is get rid of the reporters and let our soldiers fight the way they have been trained. How can anyone concentrate on the task at hand when they are concerned for how it will look on the news. PC has no place in war.

I agree with the first writter. What is wrong with Corporate America to send this young man a bill instead of thank you note. Why don't we send the bill collectors over there to see if they can collect on the debt owe to this country. Every day these people risk their lives for our freedom. I would like to thank each and every solider who has risked their lives for the liberties I have. Much love to you all.

Happy Veteran's Day.

You know it Frank S! I stumbled on this blog and it is amazing how we seem to forget that practically the entire Washington legislation supported this war at the start. No one wants to see anyone die - a life lost hurts so many...but can we put things in perspective at all? This war is nothing compared to the loss of life in Vietnam or WWII. 6000 teens die in car wrecks every year! Get a grip people...

Hey folks, this is warfare just like it was in Vietnam, with no win insight. Call your congressmen and senators and voice your opinions. It's gone on to long now, lets get out of these countries, now, save our young men and women's lives. It will become peaceful over there again, just like it did in Vietnam when U.S. got out and left completely. Isn't Vietnam peaceful now with U.S. gone? They just never learn the politicians do they?

The press only knows how to show us the bad things. Wouldn't it be refreshing if they told us a few Hero stories of our brave countrymen? This war would have been over long ago if not for the media providing the enemy with a huge propaganda campaign in our country. Peace can't be made until there is a winner and loser. Politically Correct Warfare, PC warfare is killing more people trying to do the right thing than if they just went in and knocked the snot out of them and then made them whole again. Being Politically Correct is the cause of many ills of our Great Country.
Can you imagine if WWII was reported like ABC and other other PC press reports this war? OMG we lost more men in one hour than we've lost in four years in Iraq and Afghanistan! We killed more people in one bombing run over Japan or Germany and they love us now. Respect is earned with force in these countries not with a hugg and a kiss.

My son just returned to Afghanistan and from what he has told us everything done there is highly classified. I am suprised that they where able to get this much footage. All this being said, this is exactly what he has described to us. Afghanees routinely set set traps for them and constantly sought them. Keeping your enemies close....is right on.
Posted by: JMJ | Nov 12, 2007 11:53:59 AM
I have friends in Afghanistan, and am in the Army myself. I can tell you from personal experience noone has forgotten this war on our side of things; why have others? This is not a conventional war, so we can't fight it like a conventional war. We also can't just nuke them...dont say stupid things just because you're angry. Our military leaders are very capable, and are working on the best solution. Meanwhile, the rest of us fight not for oil, or many of the things people say, but for the soldiers to our right and left. We dont have much say ourselves as to where we go, but we're damn sure going to try to bring each other home. The rest is up to the government, and those over us.

Rarely do I ever read reader comments but for some reason I did today. People have different opinions about things; that is natural and expected. What is amazing is to read so many comments that obviously reveal that many people are forming their opinions from superficial accounts from the major news media almost exclusively. Not much evidence of research, deeper reading and then contemplation. But I guess this is consistent with the process of things today. Schools teach our kids not how to think but what to think. The major news media don't just report news, they have to massage it to fit their template of how things should be thought about and viewed. Differing opinions are great but there should be some solid basis for them.
Posted by: Gary McArthur | Nov 12, 2007 11:58:28 AM
First, I doubt the veracity of this report. First, from your description you fail to note that things are complicated out there -- did the villagers really set them up? Or, more likely, were the Taliban already in the area. Fact is, the Taliban could not exist without the villiages, but that doesn't mean the villiages purposely set up US forces.
Secondly, I remember Brian Ross' claim, prior to the airing of his report on the Washington DC Madam and her "list," that he would reveal some very significant and high level names they found on the list. When the report aired it was a fizzle -- he did not, contrary to his pre-show claims, reveal anything significant (Sen Vitter's involvement with the madam was revealed by another source, not Brian Ross). Could it be that Brian thinks more of himself than he delivers?
In short, I don't buy this. This is just hype to get you all to watch. Don't buy it. It's just more media hype, more hot air and more sensationalsim. Truth is unimportant. Nothing's changed.
Posted by: robert | Nov 12, 2007 12:07:00 PM
You are such fools. Your president lied to you...and you re-elected him again. 9/11 was caused by Bin Laden...and he goes to take over iraq. Trillions of dollars are spent on this unjustified war...and the economy and dollar value is going to hell. They didn't want you there in the first place....then you scream about your soldiers getting shot at. US Army is commercialized and outsourced to Halliburton....US jobs are going overseas..and you still wonder. So when is enough is enough for you? What are you going to do about it? Hide your head in the sand? Bush is worse than Nixon.

Posted by: Sam Minervino | Nov 12, 2007 12:10:57 PM
Isn't that what war is all about? Each sides hunting one another? Did America actually believe it could just go into these countries, throw some weight around the people, out of fear of America's power, would just run screaming for the hills? These peoples, even in their primitive status, are using whatever resources they have to defend themselves against what they see as an invading source. The same mistakes made in Vietnam. There too, they considered the people primitive and backwards. But the people devised ways of even bringing down a powerful helicopter with bamboo rods thrown just right between the blades of the chopper. Never unestimate the power of the will and need to survive.

I am the father of one of those men at Korengal Valley and I am ANGRY, more than any level words can imagine.
Why now, after all the time we have been in Afghanistan are we just now telling the story? Why are we allowing the Taliban, and the foreign insurgants do this to our men and sons without us invoking the wrath of the world community....does nobody care anymore? Have we finally realized that there is actually another war going on?
Wake up American, remember these men in your thoughts and prayers, don't forget them and do everthing you can to support them.

Again, the american (lower case for emphasis that they are not) media runs a story on how the enemy attacks US soldiers. This is even more egregious because they show it on Veterans Day, a day we should honor those who serve and have served. Leave the anti US stories to reuters or al jezeera.

They will never get along with each other, let alone some non-Muslim-infidels like us. Let them figure it out. Maybe arm them all, and let them just keep on killing each other...it's their way!! Why do we engage in 'nationbuilding' anyway?
I thought the post-9/11 plan was that the US would conduct hit-and-run raids on Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran or whatever other loser nation harbored al-Qaida? Wipe 'em out and let the tribal elders clean up the body parts. Make the terrorists feel like the prey they should be rather than heroic liberators of Islam.
Why do we insist on buying all this high-priced cruise missiles, stealth bombers and UAVs and then fighting a Vietnam-style guerrilla war? (Yeah, yeah. I know. Don't knock Iraq/Afghanistan. It's the only war we've got.)

You are very naive if you think we would go to war to have lower prices at the pump. Exxon mobile is still posting record profits even with oil at nearly 100$ a barrel. Do you think they care how much you have to pay to fill your gas guzzler. They don't care about you, that's not what people mean when they say that this is a war for oil. Exxon Mobile, Haliburton, Blackwater, and plenty of other contributers to the "neo conservative movement" are making astronomical amounts of money.
The Cmdr and Chief obviously doesn't know anything otherwise the mission would have been accomplished in 03 like he pretended it was. Instead 07 is the bloodiest year yet in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The war might be over relatively soon depending on who wins the white house in 08, but don't expect anything before then. And if Mcguiliomny manages to win, don't expect the war to end before 2012.

I concur, Frank. It's easy to sit on the couch and make executive decisions on "intel" coming from ABC and the media. Obviously these folks are qualified leaders. It's easy to criticize and judge while other people do the work. Why would anyone with sound motives want to lead America anymore? Furthermore, shame on you, ABC, for airing enemy propaganda. (a day after Veterans Day, no less!) Does the media have a conscience or a soul anymore? If I wanted to see enemy propaganda I'd turn on Al Jazera.

My son-in-law is going to Afganistan after New Years. It is chilling reading this story. I agree, that we won this war and could have sustained peace and brough great prosperity to this area if it were not for the folly of starting an unprovoked war in Iraq. That is why I am agree with the impeachment proceedings called for against the VP and hopefully the Pres. What can be a higher crime then using our troops as misleading the American people in to rushing into war with Iraq when without solid proof of WMD? Presidents will continue to act like this unless they are forced to pay a price. Why are we such soft of executives jsut becuase they claim to be sincere? The path to hell is paved with good intentions. Sincerity is not the issue, it is honesty and competence.

The Soviet war in Afghanistan also known as the Soviet-Afghan War was a nine-year conflict involving Soviet forces supporting the Marxist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) government against the largely Islamic fundamentalist Mujahideen insurgents. The latter group found support from a variety of sources including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and other Muslim nations in the context of the Cold War. This conflict was concurrent to the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War.
The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on December 25, 1979. The final troop withdrawal began on May 15, 1988, and ended on February 15, 1989. Due to the high cost and ultimate futility of this conflict, the war in Afghanistan has often been referred to as the Soviet equivalent of the United States' Vietnam War.
The war had a profound impact in the Soviet Union, and has been cited as one of the causes that led to the union's eventual collapse in 1991.

the taliban, al qaeda and the UN have the same opinion of a country like ours. we should adapt our rules of engagement accordingly....

You cannot fight a war when your own politicians are more interested in scoring political points than upholding their oath of office and protecting this nation.
Our Politicians spend too much time criticizing and too little time worrying about the inner workings of this country. The end results/consequences rest on the shoulders of "We the People". Until we learn we are not being served by Washington, we will continue to suffer.

Thank you for airing this segment! Awesome job. Please continue to air segments that portray the war as it is in the battlefield. The American public needs to see these images to understand what our servicemen go thru abroad. Perhaps then we could have a clearer point of view and undestand the magnitude of the effects of any war. Great job!

The outrsage is that the villages were not demolished and the "village elders" imprisoned for their complicity in the attacks.
The restrictions imposed by "rules of engagement" prevent any rational response that would discourage participation between the villagers and their Taliban allies.
After WWII, the "wolf packs" in Germany were subject to summary execution when encountered and apprehended. That should be the consequence for the "village elders" and such cooperation with our enemies would cease. Why are we so reluctant to take the necessary effective actions?

As Michael Yon reported, because we never were able to replace the poppy as a source of income, drug money is filtering to the warlords and Taliban again. This has nothing to do with Bush but everything with tactics on the ground. So easy for you knee-jerk anti-war types to Monday Morning Quarterback every single thing in the war. Its war, and thus by its very nature is unpredicable.

Maybe fighting two endless, unnecessary counterproductive wars will prove to be better than fighting one, whatya say Frank. Heck, let's take down Iran and Pakistan while we are at it. Then we will have done exactly what Bin Laden expected us to do, and there will be an all out religious war thats origins can be traced back to 9/11. It would make Giuliani a shoe in.

My son is serving in Afghanistan, with the unit covered in this news story. Every time the phone rings or there is a knock on the door I freeze for a second or more. You can argue about the efficacy of our presence and the justification for it. You can talk about global implications, and proffer inane arguments for employing nuclear weapons and "killing them all".For me this is highly personal, and frankly I cannot construct a black and white argument for or against being in Afghanistan. What I fear are far more immediate implications: Will he end up, God forbid, among the 1/4 of homeless persons who are war vets? Will he suffer PTSD, and will he get the treatment needed to become a functioning member of society if that befalls him? Will he returned maimed and embittered? He is a strong young man, stronger than I am in many ways. I hope that strength sustains him. What I want, and cannot have, are assurances that he will be fine and returned to us whole.

Well, until I saw this video, I didn't know much about FB Phoenix. I knew more about the ones in Iraq. But now I know that there are about 30 soldiers there. I guess this ranks up there with the reports back in 01 that US intel was able to track OBL by his sat phone. Oh, gee, he just turned it off... Who is more at fault for this the reporters/media or the clearing of intel by the military? Loose lips sink ships.

I've got news for the sweethearts at ABC news. I haven't forgotten about this war or the guys fighting it especially the 173rd Airborne. Currahee guys. You may be there but we will never forget you nor will we lose faith in you. This is to you from a Vietnam grunt.

If you don't want to see our troops getting attacked, then vote to get them out. This is footage of the troops actually doing their job, and you don't want it aired. Sounds to me like you don't support their work. Traitor. ABC is doing its job of reporting, and if you don't want to see it, then don't watch it. Our troops on the other hand don't have the option of ignoring the realities on the ground because of people like you who don't see the reality of this war.

Again, when are we going to learn that to end these conflicts once and for all you need to kill the head of the snake.
That means we need to eliminate all the political and religious leaders who are "brain washing" their people into thinking all islam nonbelievers need to be destroyed. Stop playing games and start saturation bombing until these leaders and the countries (who support them) infrastructure are destroyed. These evil people only understand one thing - overwheming force. And don't stop until the job is done.
