Drunken Hookup Barbie Demands Bush Official's Resignation

November 21, 2007 8:53 AM

Drunkenhookup_mn Using simple filmmaking techniques -- and employing a crude parallel between lead poisoning and sexually transmitted diseases -- a consumer advocacy group is pushing for the nation's top product safety official to step down.

In a short, made-for-Internet video released by the Campaign for America's Future, a Barbie doll calls a Ken doll to complain she has contracted lead poisoning from a late-night, alcohol-induced, post-breakup (and off-camera) rendezvous with her dashing plastic boy-toy.

"It's hard to talk about, Ken," Barbie says into a cell phone glued to her head.  "But I've contracted something."

"Oh, no!" Ken replies into his phone. "Barbie, I'm so sorry.  What is it?"

"It's -- it's lead poisoning!" Barbie says.

"Barbie accessories containing toxic levels of lead were some of the 25 million products recalled this year," the group explains in a press release announcing its campaign.

The Washington, D.C.-based nonpartisan watchdog is using the video to call for the resignation of Nancy Nord, acting director of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, for declining to push for better funding of her agency despite recent problems with unsafe products being imported to the United States.

Drunken hookup Barbie is not alone: several Democratic politicians, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. have called on Nord to step down.

Asked to comment on the video, CPSC director of information and public affairs said, "We're just not going to dignify anything like that."

Nord said last month she had no intention of resigning and rejected criticism she was too cozy with manufacturers.

Most probably the CEO's for these toy companies are democrats ( didn't Toys-R-Us contribute to the democrates?); they pushed their manufacturing off-shore where it was "cheaper" laid off american workers and paid themselves exhorbitant salaries. They didn't bother to keep check on their chinese sub-contractors, that would have cost money. Maybe we should call for all of Congress to step down and resign.

Product safety has gone down so much and its hard to know whos blame. bush has to take some of it,I mean hes doing more than nothing right now with all the products coming in from China...China right now is pissed to say the least with the US..they would stop ships coming in if there was too much more upcry...its nuts.

Sure the Chicoms load up USA_bound products with poisonous stupid_making chemicals. You pay for it, pals.

Don't blame the Chinese... They are asked to produce goods for the least possible cost so the US company selling them can make more profit, and US consumers would rather buy low-quality, cheap throw-away goods than high quality, more expensive items. What happened to family heirlooms and toys passed down from a generation to the next?

Besides, the US now exports unethical practices so they don't have to carry the blame. Can't torture prisoners? Send them to Syria for interrogation, can't use DDT on crops? Import food from India where they do, Can't pollute water and air with toxic chemicals? Send production to China where they do. Can't use slave labor and 8-year old kids in factories? Open a factory in China, Thailand or elsewhere where they will. Until the US consumer asks for the same standards to be applied to foreign manufacturers as to US ones, don't expect things to change. BTW, that may bring back some manufacturing jobs here and improve the trade balance and the US dollar value....

Buy stuff from your nieghbor. You know, the local mom-n-pop operations. If we quit buying the crap that they are sending us, then they will stop shipping it here. I'd rather keep my local businesses in business, than some faceless Chinese executive. But some people hold the almighty dollar higher than principles, and that is why we will always be bombarded by foriegn products.

Nord, Bush's appointee, has let the companies get away with murder. She couldn't answer as to how her agency tests for lead when she knew that was going to be the subject matter before Congress. In China, they deal with corruption a bit differently.

Nonpartisan watchdog? Nice research, Blotter. From their own website: America's Future works to revitalize a progressive agenda. CAF works to build an enduring majority for progressive change. We challenge those who suggest that nothing can be done and expose the conservative agenda that has made things worse.
According to Wiki: Campaign for America's Future (CAF) is an American political organization founded by a group of progressive leaders. CAF argues that the Democratic Party should draw sharp contrasts with the Republicans and advance a progressive agenda.
For the last five years, CAF has thrown an annual conference called "Take Back America." It is a gathering of progressive activists, elected officials, bloggers, left-leaning media outlets, and other liberal nonprofits that meet and share best practices and tactics.
