Exclusive: FBI: Al Qaeda May Strike U.S. Shopping Malls in LA, Chicago
November 08, 2007 11:48 AM
The FBI is warning that al Qaeda may be preparing a series of holiday attacks on U.S. shopping malls in Los Angeles and Chicago, according to an intelligence report distributed to law enforcement authorities across the country this morning. (Click here for full text.)
The alert said al Qaeda "hoped to disrupt the U.S. economy and has been planning the attack for the past two years."
Law enforcement officials tell ABCNews.com that the FBI received the information in late September and declassified it yesterday for wide distribution.
The alert, like similar FBI and Department of Homeland Security terror alerts issued over the past five years at holiday times, raised questions about the credibility of the information.
THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS
The bulletin acknowledges that U.S. intelligence officers are uncertain as to whether the information is real, and intelligence officers say there is a concern that it could be "disinformation."
Law enforcement officials at three different agencies told ABCNews.com the FBI alert was based on a source who has proved reliable in the past.
The source reportedly had only "indirect access" to al Qaeda and word of the actual threat came to U.S. intelligence officers "through a lengthy chain" of contacts.
With the shopping season approaching, however, the FBI officials decided it was necessary to share the information.
For the past few years, jihadist chat rooms have regularly posted comments from anonymous individuals who have suggested or boasted about similar plans to attack such soft targets as shopping malls.
"Out of abundance of caution, and for any number of other reasons, raw intelligence is regularly shared within the intelligence and law enforcement communities -- even when the value of the information is unknown," said Special Agent Richard Kolko. "In the post-9/11 era, sharing information is our top priority. Al-Qa'ida messaging has clearly stated they intend to attack the U.S. or its interests; however, there is no information to state this is a credible threat. As always, we remind people to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities."
"We have no credible, specific information suggesting an imminent attack," a DHS official said.

No problem in Chicago, the terrorists and illegal aliens have free rein over the state of Illinois because our borders are wide open and our immigration laws are NOT enforced. The LA info is ironic - they have the most illegal aliens and liberal law breaking immigration criminal supporting policies of all. Lack of respect for our immigration laws (by our government) is how the 9-11 terrorists were able to move freely about the country. No Changes from 2001 - except maybe worse.

Quick, Hillary, take a poll and then see what your fellow White House hopefuls have to say about this before you weigh in!

At the rate the economy is going, no worry, none of us will have any money to be at the malls shopping.

Can we blame this on 'Global Warming' or Gearge Bush too?

Hmm..lets see. Once again we have information, "that U.S. intelligence officers are uncertain as to whether the information is real, and intelligence officers say there is a concern that it could be "disinformation." What the FBI & the DHS has turned into is a Ministry of Disinformation. Goebbels and Goering are laughing in their graves.

i love that last line about jihadist chat rooms saying how they boast about the attacks... You would hear the same crap in any aol chat room.

I think alerts like this are created by terrorists to distract from actual intentions. After 9/11 was shown to be on the radar for several years prior to the attack, however, you can't ignore anything anymore. Our best defense is to go about our lives and not let terrorists win with fear.

Regarding Dave J's Post: Remember the gas attack on the train system in Spain? Can't happen? Watch out, this threat is real. Oh, I forgot, we brought the towers down, and OJ IS innocent. Go back to sleep Dave.

Let's see,, we were told that Soros would ruin our economy if we put Bush back in the oval office, we did. The American dollar is under attack and it is not certainly by our friends, now have a warning that the thug nasties of the peaceful loving Islamic faith plan on attacking shopping districts during Christmas season,,,I have credit card, I have computer, and I am not afraid of using them.
Now lets find another source for our oil, such as the Gulf, or Alaska, then work to find a clean alternative fuel, and tell the Middle East a nest of vipers to continue on fighting each other till the next kingdom comes.

They say this every holiday season.
As far as the Economy on the rocks, Washington DA, check the recent reports.
It is a scare tactic, as that is the only thing that keeps people ontheir toes, but to say threats does not exist is to put your head in the (dare I say ) SAND.

This type of “disinformation” is its own type of terrorism. The FBI is damned if they do and damned if they don’t. If the FBI doesn’t share the bulletin and something happens, it is bad news for FBI and of course for us. If the FBI tells us about such bulletins then we become frighten, we stay home in fear, and our economy suffers.

Let's see, there was an planned jihadi bombing of the mall in Cherry Valley, IL and the jihadi shooting up the mall in Utah, both within the last year.
So obviously any warning from the federal government that there could be a coordinated attack at malls during the busiest time of year is obviously a plot by the Bush administration to boost their ratings.

I suppose this is planned for Black Friday - I do believe these attacks are planned on a yearly basis.
Of course no one will be in the malls this year as no one has ANY MONEY!!!
Shouldn't be a problem.
Any chance of Bush and Cheney shopping in these malls during the planned attacks?

It is not paranoia if they are really trying to kill us--and guess what--they are really trying to kill us.

Looks like the 35% of Democrats that think 9/11 was an inside job are VERY well represented here.
Posted by: Toronoman | Nov 8, 2007 12:44:25 PM
I'm surprised this hasn't happened already. Either they haven't tried or our security services are doing a terrific job.
I wonder what the over-under is for posts about this article calling this warning by the FBI a rightwing conspiracy to scare the public. I'd say at least 100.
It's real people. It's our reality for the distant future. Let's just hope we can stop as many of these attacks as possible.

Who the heck still shops at the mall? They have this thing called the Internet...wait a minute, is Amazon behind this latest tip?

Why would Al Qaeda attack before the elections. That would just make sure that their best friends, the Democrats, would lose...
