NYPD Chief Casts Doubt on Giuliani Expense Story
November 30, 2007 3:40 PM
New questions were raised today about Rudy Giuliani's explanation for submitting police security expenses to obscure city agencies while he was mayor of New York and carried on a secret affair with his mistress, who also was given use of a police driver and city car.
Giuliani said Thursday the unusual billing practice was not intended to hide anything but instead to speed payment of American Express credit card bills.
But the current New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said today he knew of no problems with the delay of payments before Giuliani was mayor, when Kelly served under Mayor David Dinkins, or since.

"I don't recall anybody, any statements about delay," Kelly told reporters.
He said all bills for the police details for Dinkins and now for Mayor Mike Bloomberg are handled directly "through the police department."
Critics say Giuliani's practice of sending the bills to other agencies suggested he was trying to hide his extra-marital affair with Judith Nathan, who he later married after divorcing his second wife, Donna Hanover.
In South Carolina today, Giuliani declined to offer any further explanation, saying, "We've already explained it."
Giuliani's staff made "a concerted effort" to keep reporters from coming near to the candidate, according to ABC News reporter Jan Simmonds.
"At least three Giuliani press staffers loudly instructed the press to stay within their cordoned-off area and were warned not to approach the candidate," Simmonds reports.

Rudy lying again? What a surprise. Kiss your campaign goodbye.
Posted by: LawyerTom1 | Nov 30, 2007 4:08:27 PM
Bush paved the way and Rudy wants the pay. Shows you how bad the MAINSCREAM media messed up fawning for access from 1600 PENN. Now they turn on the media telling them to stay in their corral and shut up. Republicanism...serving the underground executive branch spawned by the bushbaby.
Posted by: daddy | Nov 30, 2007 4:16:29 PM
I think this will be Giuliani's undoing.
How could someone with Giuliani's record of morally-questionable behavior be nominated by the Republican party?
Posted by: Jason | Nov 30, 2007 4:24:27 PM
Again the rich and spoiled who think they are better and more clever than everyone else and don't have to pay for things. He is not qualified to be a president or even a mayor.
Posted by: Ron | Nov 30, 2007 4:28:46 PM
Another sleazy Republican stealing public money to finance his sex life. Typical.
Posted by: JaneSays | Nov 30, 2007 4:37:28 PM
Where are the Republican morals police now? Still whining about Bill Clinton, I guess... LOL
Posted by: Big Steve-O | Nov 30, 2007 4:39:04 PM
Gee, what a surprise; yet another financial scam by "Mr. 9/11 Parrot".
If after all these articles showing just how corrupt he is, he's elected President, then it will show that Americans do not want decency in their government, and will get the corrupt government it deserves.
Posted by: Marta | Nov 30, 2007 4:51:54 PM
The issue isn't whether or not Rudy squirreled away the costs for his dalliance, but that he used public funds and employees on his mistress while still married and spending security dough on his wife and family. And Judi having her own police car and driver....Its too much.

PS: You do a great job Brian. Thank you.

Giuliani is as crooked as a cat's back. How low have we sunk that he can even be considered a viable candidate, let alone a front-runner?
Posted by: Cardsgal | Nov 30, 2007 5:18:55 PM
Quick show of hands. Who really believes Rudy's answer to this situation? Anyone? Anyone? I didn't think so.
Posted by: nab | Nov 30, 2007 5:23:23 PM
Rudy is as rotten as the day is long. I hope the MSM stays after this and follows through. Just because he has lied and painted himself into a corner and doesn't want to talk about it, does not mean there is nothing there.

All this petty bs! I understand it is indicative of one's character, but give me a break! And after watching “His Onerous” the mayor going after Mitt about some illegals doing his gardening work, I thought what a bunch of petty bs! Here Rome is burning down all around us and they want to see who has the dirtiest drawers! I want to know what direction they are going to take the country?

He was dispersing the payments to hide them from the press obviously, are we all stupid idiots????? this man wants to be president, no way. I would vote for a Mormon before him, at least at one time, they could have multiple wives, without divorcing them all to get to the right one???? i still can not believe that the republicans are going with him.......family values??????

Rudy G is the poster child for GOP family values!
Posted by: AJ | Nov 30, 2007 8:31:01 PM
We ALL know why these expenses were billed in this way - to HIDE THEM. It doesn't matter what else happens while you're mayor, you DON'T get to use city $$ to cruise your mistress around town.

Rudy is slime, and needs to just go away. He only has the city of New York to speak of, if anything. What has this man ever done, other than try and boast about himself. If I wanted a Presidential Candidate to be doing that, I think we should look at some of the WWF wrestlers first. They at least look better in tights than Giuliani ever would.

Posted by: Mike | Nov 30, 2007 10:48:01 PM
Those of you who expressed shock or surprised at this revelation should check his records as the Mayor before 9/11. As for his family values, he is the posterboy for the GOd's Own Party's double standards. At one point the former Mayor of NY City was living with his former wife and the present wife in his only official residence. Please don't tell Rush or you know who that I said this about their party.

All you need to know about Ray Kelly is that he was Police Commissioner under
David Dinkins, the Worst Mayor in
New York City History!
Kelly was Police Commissioner during the
"Crown Heights Riots" when many Jewish
citizens were killed!
Ray Kelly is just bitter that Rudy cleaned up the horrible mess that he and Dinkins left behind!
The rest of you fools who have posted here are either supporting Democrat candidates or were Never Guiliani supporters to begin with!
Contrary to your comments the Clinton Slime Machine led by ABC, NBC, CBS,
The new York Times etc will not Prevent Rudy from being elected President next year!

Gosh, sex sells, I guess.
Why was no one in a lather about the fact that Giuliani is keeping all his business dealings secret? We have no idea what conflicts he would have as POTUS. Oh well, if this is what keeps Rudy from getting elected & *Judith* from being First *ahem* "Lady" (so to speak), then keep on digging, Brian. You're a rock star!
Posted by: MJ | Dec 1, 2007 1:09:26 AM
The fact he dodged the draft to avoid Vietnam didn't phase his supporters; supporting and eventually employing a pedophile priest didn't phase them; appointing and supporting Russell Harding didn't phase them; backing Bernard Kerik, no problem; adulterous and multiple marriages, (hey! what about Bill?), no problem. I'm betting illegal use of public funds to carry on an with an affair will blow over as quick as Katrina devastated New Orleans. Obama's honesty, integrity, and intelligence is looking better and better.

The more I see of Mr. Rudy Giuliani, the less I like him.
He would do Americans a great service if he would just go away.

I'm totally shocked that everyone didn't know he was a bully and a crook from the onset. People in NYC know what and who he is. Just ask and see what answer you get. The man did nothing but strongarm everyone around him in NYC until he got his way. You think GWB is a bully? Wait until you get a load of this guy.

of the Texas GOP.

I just sit and laugh now...Everytime you watch the news theres a new scandle with another one of the R candidates. I have always thought that they were very much overpaid for the job they do, why cant we FIRE them like our jobs can? They get all these FREE benefits that go with their job, and not only did we support his wife and kids, we were supporting his mistress(es) which ever the case, no wonder our taxes are so out of control, they keep raising them so they can LIVE IT UP, while we are choking here, losing our homes, can barely feed our family, cant afford to pay for gas, cant afford to heat our homes, cant afford the doctor, We pay for all of this for these GREED MONSTERS, I feel like y'all, how in the world could anyone think he would make a good president? Open your eyes, HE AINT THE ONLY ONE DOING THIS CRAP!!!!!! Be careful if you dial 911 for help, the officers and rescue might be too busy guarding one of our officials wives, mistress, boyfriend, hahahaha not so funny huh?

Who really cares? Not one of the candidates walk on water! I'm not saying Rudy is the one, but Americans should vote for the candidate that'll do what is right for America and not all of the factionalized special interest groups!
Posted by: keith | Dec 1, 2007 8:36:04 AM
Rudy cleaned up NYC. He was allowed to have 24/7 protection regardless of where and who he met. So whats the problem? We know he had an affair. All this proves is he actually met the person he had the affair with .
Posted by: Dennis D | Dec 1, 2007 8:55:31 AM
As a native New Yorker who has moved to NJ I know how much better Rudy made NYC and I know how corrupt NJ Dems are. US Attorney Chris Christie has indicted 128 Corrupt NJ politicians so far . Most are Dems. Read a paper.
Posted by: Dennis D | Dec 1, 2007 8:57:40 AM
Let's start having the other republican candidates discuss these Rudy issues at the debates.
This guy is a non-starter, non-candidate. Let's weed him out and move on.
Posted by: Quickphil1943 | Dec 1, 2007 9:26:13 AM
It is disgusting that those with influence on the Right such as Sean Hannity and Pat Robertson are supporting Rudy. An honest Conservative can only conclude that their party is lost. Rooting out corrupted politicians should be the chief concern of every Republican at this stage. It is amazing how ignorant we are to fixing our mess. Despite his changing positions on some core issues, he is by far the most ethical of the candidates.

What an endorsement! Makes a lotta sense.
NOT.

All you have to know about Ray Kelly is that he was NYC Police Commissioner while David Dinkins(the worst mayor in NYC history)was Mayor!
The "Crown Heights Riots" took place during this time!
Rudy had to Clean up the mess left by
Dinkins and Kelly! Kellys comments are
just sour grapes!

If Hitler,Stalin and Al Capone were still alive, and running for President on the GOP ticket, they would have many GOP supporters. Their supporters would say things like: So no one is perfect, give them a break. Do you expect them to walk on water? Who cares if they murdered a few million people, what's the big deal? Go GOP! Go!
Posted by: AJ | Dec 1, 2007 2:54:36 PM
Everything you said could be applied to Hillary Clinton and the Dems!
By the way the reference to
Al Capone shows you are an Ethnic Bigot! Are you implying that all Italians are criminals?
Posted by: reaganfan | Dec 1, 2007 5:30:54 PM
Supporting the GOP culture of corruption is supporting criminal activity. Clinton is a saint compared to Rudy.
Posted by: AJ | Dec 1, 2007 6:00:08 PM
AJ: Rudy has been convicted of nothing!
Clinton(Bill) has been convicted of
lying under oath in a civil trial!
Hillary has Sandy Berger working on her campaign! He was admitted to stealing
documents from the national archives pertaining to Bill Clinton's actions or inaction on terror prior to 9/11!
What was he trying to hide?
Posted by: reaganfan | Dec 1, 2007 6:24:51 PM
Rudy couldn't ooze any more slime if he was a 200 pound slug moving through this garden of politics.
Posted by: Rick_VT | Dec 2, 2007 9:30:35 AM
It's obvious that you know nothing about the history of NYC. #1. David Dinkins, though a relatively ineffective Mayor and a disgrace during the Crown Heights riots, was hardly its worst.
#2. Ray Kelly was not Police Commisioner during the Crown Heights riots, Lee Brown was. The Crown Heights tragedy occured in Aug. 1991. Ray Kelly was appointed Commisioner in Oct. 1992 and served until the end of 1993. During his time as PC he oversaw a continued decline in crime in NYC that started during his predecessor's tenure(Hint: Google Community policing). He also led the response and successful investigation of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the lessons of which Rudy Giuliani failed to learn.
#3. I served the NYPD from 1987 to 2005, under every Police Commisioner from Ben Ward through Ray Kelly(twice) and I will say unequivocally that he was the most professional, respected, intelligent and honorable of all of them.
I'm not sure whether you're a liar, an ignoramus or just a damn fool, but one thing I am sure of is that you have nothing constructive or honest to add to this thread.
Posted by: Budbear | Dec 2, 2007 12:30:12 PM
As a former New Yorker who worked in NYC throughout both the Dinkins and Giuliani administrations, I, like a lot of other area residents, understood Giuliani's character from the first.
In his campaign against Dinkins, Giuliani did not shy from appealing to New Yorkers who were unabashedly racist, using surrogates like Bob Grant, the racist talk radio host. All the while, Giuliani proclaimed himself to be nothing of the kind. He is what he has always been, an egotistical authoritarian.
Posted by: JerseyCurmudgeon | Dec 2, 2007 1:04:13 PM
I get so tired of hearing about how well Rudy did after 9/11. What was it exactly that he did? I don't remember him at ground zero w/ a shovel. I mean come on. If anyone deserves credit for the aftermath it is the firemen, policemen, volunteers, the people of NYC and the citizens of our country who stood together. Rudy didn't have to lift a finger.

Democrats: Shrillary who is running to get around the constitutional provision that would prevent Bill from running again. Makes as much sense as having Maria Shriver run to avoid Ah-nald Schwarzenegger's foreign born prohibition.
Obama, a Chicago machine candidate, and Senator who has moved up to a staff of 15.
Mike Gavel and D. Kucinch, Insane.
Joe Biden, Plagerist.
Rudy: personal life a train wreck, but made a career out of fighting organized crime.
Romney; Not much of a Mormon, only has one wife. Businessman and Governor
McCain Fighter pilot, prisoner of war, adulterer, and Senator with a staff of 15.
Thompson: At least can talk, but moved from Senator with staff of 15 to Actor with staff of 10.
Huckabee
Duncan hunter: Military background, has all the right positions.
Ron Paul: MY Rep when I was in Texas, used to earmark bills that would pass without his vote, then vot against them.
