CIA Presses for Leak Probe Into Ex-Official
December 21, 2007 4:42 PM
A request from the CIA for a criminal investigation into the ex-spook who recently gave an interview with ABC News to discuss harsh interrogations of terror suspects is "both expected and normal," according to the man's lawyer.
"It is a routine act that the CIA undertakes even when they know no violation has occurred," said attorney Mark Zaid, who represents former CIA official John Kiriakou.
ABC News aired an unprecedented interview with Kiriakou Dec. 10, in which he told correspondent Brian Ross he believed that the CIA used a technique known as "waterboarding," or controlled drowning, to extract information from a controversial al Qaeda captive.

The CIA has requested the Justice Department examine whether Kiriakou illegally shared classified information by giving interviews to ABC News and other outlets, the Washington Post reported Friday.
In the interview, Kiriakou gave a carefully-worded defense of the CIA's use of waterboarding, saying that while he believed the treatment was torture and necessary at the time, it is no longer necessary.
Kiriakou's on-the-record comments 11 days ago reportedly outraged CIA officials. Sources told ABC News some called for an investigation at the time, but the effort was squelched by higher-ups.
Kiriakou said he did not witness the waterboarding but was told details by others who were present.

A recent Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll found that a huge amount of Americans suspect cover-ups by elements of the federal government and that distrust of the federal government is growing significantly. See the article: "Survey shows majority of Americans suspect cover-ups, distrust federal government" (AmericanChronicle December 21, 2007).

That's typical - They can't defend their actions so they do the next best thing and go after the whistle blower... It's the Joe Wilson scenario all over again.

Its war time. This guy committed treason as defined by the papers he signed. A firing squad should be in order.
Oh thats right - we should welcome those that mean us harm.
Funny how turning the other cheek is the only Christian thing we are allowed to talk about.
I fear my gov't because losers like this guy hinder my families safety.
Waterboard these punks and keep the fighting out of my country. Better yet, waterboard them and treat them like they treat our POW's..

Whistleblowers like this fellow have to speak out; but they or we cannot expect a corrupt fascist government to investigate itself. Thats like asking Hitler to investigate the SS. Only after these criminals are out of office, and the war crimes trials proceed against Bush/Cheney et al- then the truth will emerge, ugly as it is.
Meanwhile, as we confront terror, and in the words of Pogo: we have met the enemy and they are us.

Who cares about waterboarding?!! They are strapping bombs to their children and cutting off heads. Do what is necessary to gain the information you need. Who cares if it scares them into submission. You pansies out there who would rather see Americans die than the Islamic Terrorists are screwed in the head.

What does the Frau Hilldigard want to check out in this investigation? Where was Bill at the time?

MICHAEL says it all as the abc chumps fail to post my thoughts. My thoughts include the giddy possibility that news losers and enabling paid off hacks get swept up in the WAR CRIMES TRIALS. Be still my beating heart...

I would suspect there are cover ups that occur...as there should be. The average American would rather go to the mall than have any accurate thought about the real world. I think Jack Nicholson said it best: You can't handle the truth. My father's favorite quote...educated beyond the means to assimilate the information puts it all in proper context.

To mysovereignnation: Treason is releasing of classified information such as the white house did in the Valerie Plame case. Whistle-blowing falls way short of being treason, I'm afraid that your fears are directed towards the wrong people. Remember this - It is better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt...

Once someone is tortured, the experience
becomes a part of that persons life
experince or intellectual property.
