U.S. Checking al Qaeda Claim of Killing Bhutto

December 27, 2007 11:47 AM

Uscheckingal_mn While al Qaeda is considered by the U.S. to be a likely suspect in the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Banazir Bhutto, U.S. intelligence officials say they cannot confirm an initial claim of responsibility for the attack, supposedly from an al Qaeda leader in Afghanistan.

An obscure Italian Web site said Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, al Qaeda's commander in Afghanistan, told its reporter in a phone call, "We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahedeen."

It said the decision to assassinate Bhutto was made by al Qaeda's No. 2 leader, Ayman al Zawahri in October. Before joining Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan, Zawahri was imprisoned in Egypt for his role in the assassination of then-Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

Bhutto had been outspoken in her opposition to al Qaeda and had criticized the government of President Pervez Musharraf for failing to take strong action against the Islamic terrorists.

"She openly threatened al Qaeda, and she had American support," said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, the former White House counterterrorism adviser. "If al Qaeda could try to kill Musharraf twice, it could easily do this," he said.

Al Qaeda had claimed responsibility for the bomb attack Oct. 18 during Bhutto's homecoming rally that killed 140 people but left the former prime minister uninjured.

Senior U.S. officials say it will take several days to sort out who was responsible and that it will be "a test of credibility for the Pakistani government."

U.S. officials monitoring Internet chat rooms known to be used by Islamic militants say several claims of responsibility have been posted, although such postings are notoriously unreliable.

In a statement Thursday night, an FBI spokesman said that there are "no specific threats" against the U.S. in web postings reviewed by the bureau.

I think Louis is correct... "AlQueada has been associated with this..., we will hear how someone admitted of this plot under torture and that if we had been allowed to be more aggressive with it [torture] we might have found something out sooner." Thank you, Louis!

ok, this has all the signs of crap. No matter what comes out now, AlQueada has been associated with this. Welcome back to the politics of fear. Next, we will hear how someone admitted of this plot under torture and that if we had been allowed to be more aggressive with it we might have found something out sooner.

The brutality of AQ in Iraq has turned the Iraqi people against them, maybe the murder of Benazir Bhutto will have the same affect in Pakistan. One can only hope.

now we have a nuclear armed country in chaos.. if the UN has ANY balls whatsoever it will IMMEDIATELY step up and take over.. will that happen?

if not, they have undoubtedly proven themselves completely worthless and should dissolve NOW

We need to have more understanding for Al Quaeda. They are people too. I think
with better education in place, more day care, excellent nutrition and diplomacy, diplomacy, diplomacy its hard to believe that the religion of peace could be respomsible for this.

This is what Al-Qaeda wanted all along. Chaos in a nuclear country. Pakistanis need to come together and clean the country out so that they may live in peace. Very sad day for Pakistan to lose this courageous woman. Musharaff needs to put Marshall law back into effect until everyone calms down, and assesses this with rationality.

Smells like AL CIADA.

This is a terrible tragedy for the people of Pakistan. We are a peace loving and modrate people. Those who have done this are enemies of Pakistan and enemies of Islam. This is a moment in History when we as Pakistanis should unite against Extremism and Terrorism and strengthen our reslove to eradicate this menace from the world. We as a country and as a people are the biggest sufferers in this. We have lost hundreds and thousands of innocent lives, we have lost almost a thousand brave soldiers and our country becomes more and more unsafe. We need the help from the world in fighting this menace.

It's time to unleash the full power of the CIA & the US military.

I agree with Mike: it was the evil Bush, with Cheney actually pulling the trigger, with bullets supplied tax free by Halliburton.

Posted by: sohail | Dec 27, 2007 12:57:43 PM

Isn't this similar to the days leading to 911?

We need Bush now more than ever.
4 more years, maybe 8 or more...

I fear what would a lesser Republican or, God forbid, any democrat mean in this time when a strong, honest and brave president like Bush is a must.

At a time like this, What kind of responsible news organization would actually pick out a demented-conspiratorial "Bush Did It!" email to post in the selected comments on this terrible story??? Is ABC NEWS run by juvenile wackos who also believe in alien abductions?!?! SHAME ON ABC!!

Posted by: Rider | Dec 27, 2007 1:01:38 PM

those who say terrorism is just fear tactics remind me of the people who said hitler was just a small problem and was not a major threat, and said japan would never attack the usa.....deja vue (all over again!).

Posted by: johnny | Dec 27, 2007 1:02:32 PM

Musharraf was widely condemned for putting Bhutto under house arrest, but maybe he did it for her protection!!

Posted by: Key | Dec 27, 2007 1:02:57 PM

Do we still have doubts about the evil of American Terrorism?

Posted by: Bob | Dec 27, 2007 1:03:04 PM

I agree with the above comments that AlQaeda and those who support Islamic terrorism are totally responsible. This brave woman called them out...that obviously, can't be left to stand. This is a long war, as President Bush told us after 9/11 and it may go on for eons of time before the world finally is tired of it all. We can only hope that adults will finally take charge and stop the insanity.

> ok, this has all the signs of crap.

Yes, Islamic terrorist crap. Or, is it conspiracy loon crap?

> No matter what comes out now, AlQueada has been associated with this.

By themselves, no less. If not them, then who? Aliens from outer space? Or more ominously, the U.S., the most eeeeeeeeevil country in the history of the UNIVERSE?

> Welcome back to the politics of fear.

Welcome back to the REAL WORLD. Why is it so hard for you to recognize evil when it stares you in the face? This just proves that the terrorists don't care if you are white, black, Muslim, Christian, or whatever. If you get in their way, you are a target.

All decent people, Muslims included, should be fighting against them, not fearing them.

Leftists have all the answers

Posted by: VEG | Dec 27, 2007 1:04:51 PM

This event is of course sad news. However, as Americans we must accept the facts that as a nation we cannot control the world. Further, we should not allow our elected political "Decission Makers" or as one calls himself a "Decider" use our country for the purposes of attempting to control the world. Although our intentions may be for the good, history proves to us that no nation who ever tried to do it in the recorded past has ever succeeded and survived as a nation.
I say, let's take care of us and help when we can. Otherwise, we have a country full of homeless and starving ppeople who do not even have proper mmedical care! It is time that we GET RREAL!

Posted by: Bob Baum | Dec 27, 2007 1:05:13 PM

While I agree we need to keep a watch out for the "politics of fear" mentioned above....we have to be just as careful to ASSUME it is politics of fear. Obviously AQ is the most likely suspect. just because fear has been played before, it does not mean that every claim of terrorism is false. Wake up.
