For '08 White House, 'Beltway Bandits' Pick Clinton, Dems

January 03, 2008 3:17 PM

For08whiteho_mn For private government contractors, Hillary Clinton leads the pack of White House contenders -- at least, if campaign contributions are any measure.

An analysis by Government Executive magazine showed executives and employees of major government contractors have given nearly $1.2 million to presidential campaigns this cycle. Clinton, with more than $240,000 in donations from that group, is ahead of her competition, the magazine reported.

Barack Obama isn't far behind, however. According to the publication, the Democratic junior Illinois senator received $232,000 from government contractors. In all, the publication found that more than over 60 percent of government contractor donations to 2008 presidential campaigns have gone to Democrats.

The federal government's use of private companies to do work once handled by public-sector employees has mushroomed under the Bush administration. The proliferation of for-profit companies and consultants providing the executive branch with advice and workers for functions including security, data processing and even sensitive intelligence projects has been decried by reform-minded Democrats like Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. -- and Clinton herself.

On the campaign trail, Clinton has blasted the trend and has promised to cut the private-sector government workforce by 500,000. Private workers, she said, are "often less accountable and less competent" than public employees.

A contracting industry executive told the magazine he didn't put much emphasis on Clinton's rhetoric.

"I don't focus too much on statements that are said in the heat of a presidential campaign," the magazine quotes Stan Soloway, president of the Professional Services Council, as saying.

The Clinton campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

Its time to end these contributions.

Also, anyone higher than a GS13/Major should not be able to work for these companies.

Even in WWII, there were Congressional investigations of contractors. I haven't heard of too many lately.

Like Medicare Part D which is costing taxpayers roughly 25% more than the previous government distributed funds. Bush's plan costs more because each of the "competitive" providers has to syphon off money meant to help poorer Americans to pay for executive overhead. This multiplies the cost of providing help--unnecessarily. I bet most of the executives of these companies are registered Republicans whereas the displaced government employees tended to support Democrats. Repeat this process for jails, security, computation etc and see the folly of Bush's capitalistic and harmful "privatization".

It doesn't matter who wins as they are ALL the same and paid by the same people. The only candidate that has always stood by his word and has held the constitution as the law is the only one worthy of office. Take the time and research Ron Paul. He speaks truth and is a true believer in our constitution. The others are merely puppets, crooks, and in my opinion unworthy.

It is too bad that Hillary can't be judged by what she believes in and what she has the power to acomplish. She surely has the backing of many of the population of Florida. I was amazed...

Finally, the real Hillary! The whole world needs to know. I knew she was dirty anyway.

Brian, what ever happened to the New Hampshire recount and those vulnerable Diebold machines (even if they have been conveniently renamed)?

you know, its amazing how we get blinded in a political race. As for most people they only look for a hero not a true grit canidate, They are often blinded by at first glances than by what they can see overall or what they hear. Back in North Carolina i was amazed how fast the african american voters turned their backs on the largest supporters and advocates there has been since rev king, and i was deeply saddened to see such disloyalty to ms Clinton. and the CLINTON HERITAGE, The next time you have the chance to watch both of the canidates, look in their eyes not at their mouths and you will see what i see, and did not see at first, There is complete passion in what she belives in, for all people not just some, When i watch Obama speek i find myself constantly searching in his eyes for his truth, and have not been able to find it there because i see no real passion in his eyes all i have seen so far is a man that knows what to say at the right time to the right people, and in no definition would this be called passison. Im still watching him give execellant sermonds but have not found his truth as i have hers for the past two months. So do yourself this, the next time you see either or both of them speek turn the sound down and see what they are saying, you will find your voice in her eyes.

lane,

What are you babbling about?? Are you suggesting we should cover our ears and watch the Candidate's "eyes" instead of listening to their words and make that the deciding factor??

Come on.. gimme a break

Another idiotic biased story. The headline claims that Beltway Bandits prefer Hillary Clinton. Funny, when Bush funnels literrally TENS OF BILLIONS of dollars to contractors in Iraq, many of whom ARE PAID TEN TIMES WHAT THE JOB IS WORTH, the contractors are NEVER called bandits by the media. Not exactly an objective headline, is it?
Then, when I actually read the facts, Hillary got only $240,000 from contractors and Obama only $232,000. Out of more than a hundred million they've raised. Wow, such a small amount from contractors, and the Hillary and Obama amounts ARE ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME! Maybe the headline SHOULD have read, "Contractors contribute equally to Hillary and Obama." But, if you can't bash Hillary and promote Obama in a article then, as a reporter, you haven't really done your job, have you?
