GOP Lawmaker Presses Rice Over Iraq Rape Case

January 30, 2008 11:49 AM

Justin Rood Reports:

Goplawmakerpr_mn A Republican lawmaker wants Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to answer questions in person about the high-profile rape case of Jamie Leigh Jones, after lower State Department officials failed to provide information that satisfied him.

Declaring that the State Department's previous written responses about Jamie Leigh Jones' allegations of gang-rape and confinement were "unacceptable" and raised "serious concerns," Rep. Ted Poe of Texas wrote the State Department Monday to request a meeting with Rice. A copy of the letter was shared with ABC News.

In interviews and her lawsuit against her former employer Kellogg Brown and Root, Jones has said she was drugged and gang-raped by her co-workers on her third night in Iraq. After reporting the incident to KBR, she has said the company confined her to a modified shipping container.  According to Jones, Rep. Poe played an instrumental role in winning her release by contacting the State Department, which dispatched agents to her location.

Asked if Rice would meet with Poe, State spokeswoman Nicole Thompson said "the secretary's office will respond to the congressman." She declined to comment further.

I don't know about the rest of you SHERLOCKS but did anybody notice how bad Condi looked at the STATE OF THE UNION "duress"...

hmmmmmmmm, another shining example of Bush administration up-front honesty. Even to a member of Bush's own party. How refreshing. Can we say "Cover Up?" boys and girls? How sad this is and how sad the Bush administration is.

The really horrible thing is that the gang-rape occurred in 2005, almost 3 years ago now. Condi and DOJ are the ones who claimed they had no jurisdiction in the Green Zone. KBR said the only recourse Jones had was ARBIRTRATION by one of their own chosen arbitrators.
The whole thing is sick, just like the President and Vice President. The whole administration is just plain evil.

Don't expect anything from this dingbat..She is just another Bush SOCK PUPPET..All she plans to do is sit on her #### for the next 354 more days and tour the world at taxpayer expense just like her boss..

This reminds me of the things the Nazis did years ago. But the Bush administration and their friends are Nazi wannabes. Some day all their evil deeds will surface and even their lemming supporters will see the true evil that has occurred over the years.

Hey, Ted Poe is one red-neck son of a gun -- he was known in Houston as a very tough judge and he does not play well with others; he gets his teeth into something and he's not the kind to let go. As scary as it would have been to have appeared in his courtroom on some trumped up murder charge in Houston (Harris County is big on trumped up murder charges), I have to say that I am very glad that it is Ted Poe who is going after this. The preceding commenters almost certainly do not know the tenacity of this guy. He's never say die, redneck to the end.

I don't see any Bush supporters here. This is so outrageous that it defies logic. As does Bush's presidency.

I certainly don't blame the white house for gang rape. How many of you have actually made a phone call to your congressman demanding action against this contractor and pressing for justice on this woman's behalf? Why do you expect more from politicians than you yourself are willing to offer?

Counting the days when this corrupt administration and its brown nosing
lackeys ride off into the retirement sunset with all of their hard-earned money.

This is a sad situation IF these allegations are true. The lesson here is read a contract before you sign it. The contract says she has to go to private arbitration with the company which doesn’t leave her too much legal recourse. Also I have worked in the green zone for KBR and I can tell you there are some holes in this story. Besides, there are plenty of KBR employees who have been screwed by this part of the contract but nobody gives a crap until a pretty girl comes along with some glamour shots and Congressman Poe smells an opportunity. That sounds pretty callous I know but I’ve seen some pretty major set-ups by some KBR employees against the company to try and cash in.

Do you have any class? If Ms jones was your daughter would you want her name and photo plastered all over the news, as you have done. The delivery of this article shows just what kind of news outlet you are. It's all about gossip isn't it.

Are you ready for a McCain BUSH Ticket? As in Jeb Bush?

About 7 months ago, I spent several hours (stranded) at the Washington, DC airport and on the same flight from DC to Los Angeles being chatted up by McCain's' campaign manager who would not stop boasting what a great legacy the Bush family has to leave the American People. And! He boasted what a great President Jeb Bush would make for this Country.

I can only speculate that since George Sr and Barbara Bush have been such close friends over the past several decades, that McCain will repay that friendship and loyalty by calling on Jeb Bush to run as his Vice President.

Ever wonder why other Governors have endorsed McCain but Jeb Bush has been eerily silent during the primaries about who he is endorsing? It's because both Jeb and John know that Republicans will NOT vote for McCain if they know that a Bush will be the running mate.

Chime in folks and get the conversation out there before Super Tuesday!

We taxpayers pay KBR (the government for the work and then to claim that we do not any juridiction is laughable and outragous. They are a a US company paid with US dollars employs american people and they claim they are exempt from justice and our laws. Once this government leaves and I can't wait. KBR and all should be investigated

Posted by: Wilma | Feb 1, 2008 12:04:38 PM

Do a little research, KBR has been investigated many, many times and KBR employees have been prosecuted and convicted for a variety of crimes over the years. KBR as a company has made no claims to being exempt from any laws and I assure you does not protect its employees in any way from the government who pays all of their inflated salaries. One of the reasons nobody has much interest in the case is because even a cursory glance at the claims and the evidence doesn’t even come close to “reasonable doubt”.

It is a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation, Yes We can. It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed it's trails for it's freedoms, Yes We Can, It was sung by immigrants as they trudged out the deadly shores, Pioneers pushed westward against unforgiving moments, Yes We Can. It is the Call for the Workers Organized, women who reached for the balance, A president who chose to move us to a new frontier and King who led us to the mountain top to the promise land, Yes We Can. Yes We Can to justice and equality. Yes we Can to opportunity and prosperity. Yes We Can Heal this nation Yes we can...

I hope everyone who reads this would imagine this lady is your daughter or sister or wife, and think what you would do to the rapists/Blackwater and the State Department that allowed this to happen. "Business/Money First" is the plan of this Bush admin! Not WMD! Not spreading freedom! It's profits for Halliburton and KBR and Blackwater who are Bush-Chenney-Rice-Rumsfeld-Powell's cronies - those war criminals. It's OIL!
For all head-in-the-sand republicans out there who still refuse to see this disaster for what it is, if you still support the war ==> push your own children and grand children to enlist! (You notice people like ROMNEY who has 5 sons, who favors the "war", but none of the son has evern been to Iraq? Fricking HYPOCRITE!)

These rapists will go free and nothing will be done to Blackwater/KBR or Halliburton. I have no faith in this bought-and-paid-for bunch of gangs of GOP.
