Public Broadcasting Activists Refute McCain Campaign 'Facts' on FCC Letters

February 26, 2008 2:04 PM

Avni Patel Reports:

Mccain A public broadcasting activist is accusing Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign of lying in its statements rebutting last week's New York Times story about McCain's connections to Washington lobbyist Vicki Iseman.

After the story broke, the McCain campaign distributed a lengthy document stating that the senator's commerce committee staff "met with public broadcasting activists from the Pittsburgh area" who opposed a controversial license swap involving Iseman's client, Paxson Communications, before it sent two letters to the Federal Communication Commission urging the commissioners to vote on the issue.

"It never happened," said Jerold Starr, who led the grassroots opposition to the deal as the co-chairman of the Save Pittsburgh Public Television Campaign. "Moreover, we had no idea that McCain had any interest in our local matter."

Starr's co-chair on the campaign, Linda Wambaugh, said that she and Starr handled all the lobbying for campaign.

"We were it. Anything would have come through us," said Wambaugh. "There was absolutely no contact whatsoever -- no meetings, no phone calls, no correspondence."

The McCain response document also claimed that both Paxson's lobbyists and the public broadcasting activists "expressed to staff members their frustration that the proceeding had been before the FCC for over two years. Both parties asked the staff to contact the FCC regarding the proceeding."

"That's a bold-faced lie," said Starr, who wrote about his experience leading the campaign in his 2000 book "Air Wars." "The longer it took, the better our chances were. It meant that the FCC was paying serious attention to our complaint."

The McCain campaign questioned how Starr would be able to remember every meeting from nine years ago, though it says its own statement was based on the recollections of the Commerce Committee staff at the time.

The McCain letters, sent on Nov. 17 and Dec. 10 of 1999, came weeks before Paxson's deal to swap licenses with religious broadcaster Cornerstone Communications was set to expire.

Angela Campbell, a Washington lawyer who represented the Pittsburgh activists, says the timing of the letters was "clearly in Paxson's interest," although the letters included a disclaimer stating that the senator took no position on the vote.

Questions have been raised about other statements contained in the McCain response to the Times story over the past few days. Newsweek.com reported on Friday that a 2002 deposition indicated that McCain recalled discussing the Pittsburgh deal with Lowell "Bud" Paxson prior to sending the letters -- an apparent contradiction of the campaign's statement that the senator never personally discussed the matter with Paxson or his lobbyists.

Paxson told the Washington Post on Saturday that he recalled discussing the matter with McCain in the senator's office weeks before the letters were sent. Another Paxson lobbyist, Dean Goodman, later told the Associated Press that he doubted Paxson's recollection.

Appears that Mr. Straight Talker ain't talking too straight

Great. McCain's crazy, angry and a liar too. What a surprise.

"The Maverick", which I was (regrettably in hindsight) willing to consider voting for in 2000 ('cause he seemed to be honest, not a politician) has become as corrupted as most of the congressional/administrative/judicial sector.

He tried fighting it, but the GOP is mostly controlled by the 'good ol' boys' back-scratching network and was scared of someone who might challenge the long awaited appointments (and paychecks) for those who'd 'towed the line'. So they marginalized McCain to get Bush in 2000, then asked McCain to do Bush's bidding in 2004 "for the GOP" in return for their support in 2008 (during which he supplicated himself so eagerly and fully to the 'status quo' of bribes/favoritism/cronyism, etc.).

The sad thing is that the GOP has barely helped McCain thus far - even for all his "line-towing" (it's almost as if they're rubbing McCain's integrity in his face, since they now own it). McCain used to be respectable, but since he gave in around 2003-ish, he's been a hollow version of himself.

McCain (in my humble opinion) seems to have sold his soul in exchange for a semi-shot at the Presidency.

When I saw him forcefully advocate GW Bush for president in 2004, I could see his integrity being eaten by the shadowy men on the sidelines.

This guy used to be truly independent, but gave himself up for the grand pooh-bah . . . the presidency.

The real news is this guy Saint Mcain wants more war.

What a bowl of joy !

We love Saint McCain - NOT :)

So, when will the corporate media begin referring to John McCain as being "ethically-challenged" vs. being a "straight-talker". For some reason, the vast majority of corruption/ethics issues in the past seven years have fallen at the feet of Republicans. Still, it seems that the corporate media almost seems to will itself not to connect the dots.

Please find your own language to describe the campaigns and candidates. When you parrot the spoon-fed talking points, you let down the American people. Our constitutional democracy needs to have a skeptical, independent press to ensure that our elected officials and courts are truly serving the citizens of the United States.

Actually, I just thought of another explanation for McCain's problems with producing accurate memories -- perhaps he's having a senior moment.

Anyone who doesn't realise McCain was always a scumbag doesn't have enough sense to have a vote worth their own #####.

The only genuine candidate who is not only honest but also a patriotic American is Ron Paul.

McCain is a fool, an incompetent spoiled rich kid and a probable traitor and always has been. Do some research,

He is furthermore nuts. Has fully lost his mind as the following should at least make one alert to the possibility.

Anyway see if I care that you choose another one of the worst people on the planet for a leader.

Uh frank, they don't relate to any backs unless they are 'bare-back' ridin fools. Kay Griggs exposed the true nature of both parties "up and comers" in the system. Seems like barak is one too, according to Sinclare.

McCane is a fratBoy scumbag. His playing around nearly suck a U.S. carrier but only killed about 167 fellow sailors.

The revelations of his talking to nobody in Iraq, is proof enough that he is some loonatic, and a good chance he IS tha Manchurian candidate depicted in the Sinatra movie.

Anyone who ever thought to or voted for McCain never did their duty as required. To pick the best person for congress, senate or president. You wouldn't have to look to deep to find McCain himself saying he has lied in order to get elected. If you knew and voted for him anyway double shame on you. I get ill just thinking that people could vote for someone just because he or she is in their party or because they hate the other person. When will it stop, when we are in a nuclear war or 10's of millions of people die from starvation every year. We are closer to both than most people want to admit. But admit or not it is happening. I am ashamed to call myself an American anymore we have nearly hit the bottom of the barrel. And it continues business as usual.

McCain, a sad shadow of an once admirable man.

Fellow Veterans have told a story about John
McCain over the years. It seems he was the only resident of the Hanoi Hilton that wasn't decorated and promoted when they were repatriated to the USA ,I was told McCain made numerous radio broadcasts for the enemy ,I feel anyone can be broken by torture and being broken holds no shame however to my knowledge, nobody among the other pilots
co-operated, If these stories are true, this would explain McCains constant war support(A hundred years of
War)as compensation for his failures.
and a sure removal from the War Hero's list, John Kerrys "Swiftboating" hammered a real hero. What is McCains
true history ,Many call him the Mancherian candidate, can this be true ,We already know his honesty is called to question regarding the Lobbiest revelations, Am I alone in this
speculation? Has He ever received treatment to his obvious serious case of
Post Traumatic Stress Disease? These are questions that must be answered before the Republican Convention

Well, now, "Straight Talk" doesnt mean necessarily that its truthful straight talk, it just could mean he doesnt sound like hes talking mumbojumbo political stuff that the constituents dont comprehend. That gives him an out to still be the straight talker, but lie a lot.
Personally, i think he has bent himself over the railing for the Republican party just to get elected. What he'll do if he gets in, is anyone's guess, he crosses republicans as much as he does dems and the comman consumer.
Heck the guy grew up as a rebel, james dean's movie character was his favorite movie guy, he almost got kicked out of the academy twice. he was a reknown womanizer, drunk, smoker, brawler, etc.
What makes one think that if thats his attitude for his first 25 years or so, that his brain is of a thinking type that he changes everything about his persona to be a better guy? Dont you think he thought he was confident of his decisions before?
I dont know that he deserves the kudos hes been getting from anyone.
Seems like a typical lying republican to me.

If letters are fair game, wait until we see the letters Obama wrote so Resko could be eligible as a HUD housing developer (slumlord). Obambi's teflon can't last forever.

Good god Capt Ed -- we're actually posting ramblings accusing McCain of having made secret broadcasts from Hanoi he's somehow managed to always keep quiet? Nice. Makes the Obama "dressed" photo denied-release seem like the pinnacle achievement of Western civilization by comparison.

Ultimately, the he-said-she-said of this, the relative lack of sizzle as a story (sex would have sold; why would the NYT have made so many questionable journalistic choices in getting the Iseman story out in the first place?), and the fact that likely Dem nominee Obama will have a "canceling-effect" issue with Tony Rezko will ultimately make this a non-issue. Put it this way: anybody who reads this and believes the bulk/worst of it and/or is bothered by it was probably never really on the fence with McCain anyway. To a true undecided/late-breaker/average Joe or Josie, it's just not gonna hold much water.

It must be most Republicons these days have demensia,McCain is one.

Posted by: AJ | Feb 28, 2008 8:51:18 AM

Pat Buchanan said that "McCain makes Cheney look like Ghandi". If that is your kind of President, then get thee down to the voting booth. I prefer someone that will actually make America safer and inprove the lives of working Americans than to do more of what Bush/Cheney have already done to our safety and security - flush it down the toilet.
