Rezko Trial: Obama Consulted on Board Picks

March 10, 2008 1:27 PM

Justin Rood and Melissa Murphy Report:

As an Illinois lawmaker, Barack Obama was one of eight state officials consulted on appointments to a state board which later became involved in what prosecutors describe as a fraud scheme, the Associated Press reports today.

That information was contained in a June 2003 memo from a national Democratic official introduced this morning as evidence at the trial of Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a Chicago-area developer and political operative facing corruption charges.

The memo does not say how much influence Obama had over the process of picking members for the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board, AP said.

And it did not indicate Obama was involved in the alleged corruption that later tainted the board.

WHO THE HELL CARES...OBAMA HAS ONE POSSIBLE SCANDAL..SHALL WE START LISTING OL' BILLY BOB'S AND HILLARYS SCANDALS. IF THE WORST THING THAT OBAMA DID WAS BE-FRIEND A POSSBIBLE SCUMBAG...I WOULD STILL VOTE FOR HIM WITH A SMILE...

So, ... there is non information here?

Posted by: Mark Webb | Mar 10, 2008 1:45:29 PM

No news here. The media is trying to get something out of the Rezko suit that does not exist. Hillary, Bill, Bush and every politician out there have had something to do with a fund raiser that got indicted. Bill Clinton actually testified in court. Hillary returned almost a million to Norman Hsu who is in jail today.

obama knew the SYRIAN slum lord
for 20 years and also contribute in his
(obama) campaign when HE ran for office
in CHICAGO.So how can you say he was not
involved in the alleged corruption that
tainted the BOARD.Again tip-toe around
OBAMA.

There is no question in my mind that Obama will be called to testify. It is about time Brian Ross started to peel back the onion on Obama. So far, he's had an easy ride. Things are beginning to change.

Posted by: Nia | Mar 10, 2008 2:01:25 PM

Health Facilities planning board? Does this tie in to Michelle O's 200k raise?
I can only imagine what is going to come out next and I wonder if the media will cover it or continue to pretend that all of this is on the "up and up"
Sounds like Obama is less of a "change" candidate than he would like us to believe!!

Posted by: Jerry | Mar 10, 2008 2:04:25 PM

The problem is that Obama acts like the saint who does politics differently from other politicians. But he's no different. His campaign theme is about clean politics. But he just hasn't dipped his hands in the national politics longer than other dirty politicians. Barely 3 years in national politics. Wait until he gets into double digits. This is only the beginning. Nobody's perfect.

Posted by: Dao | Mar 10, 2008 2:06:59 PM

This man Obama comes with to much baggage,it can't all be just rumors!

Posted by: Kathy | Mar 10, 2008 2:07:32 PM

And why is this important???

You guys keep on fishing. You might get a nibble but no catch.

Posted by: ROB | Mar 10, 2008 2:08:14 PM

The media has had pain trying to het something on Obama's record and it has been daunting. To say he is not vetted is not true. They have been investigating him for a while and all they have is this. I will vote for him if this is all they have.

Posted by: james | Mar 10, 2008 2:08:18 PM

Brian Ross,

Excellent work! The more you dig, the more filth you are going to find.

Posted by: Michelle | Mar 10, 2008 2:12:55 PM

This does not even begin to pass the "smell test". Have to hold your nose if you vote for Obama. This already stinks to high heaven and just stay tuned. There is lots more to come. Oprah is in this up to her ears as well.

Posted by: Bill Elliott | Mar 10, 2008 2:13:04 PM

Yeah, let's talk about Clinton scandals. Whitewater was investigated for 6 YEARS at a cost of 60 MILLION dollars and no evidence was ever found that the Clintons did anything wrong. People today still drag that dead horse out for view. But let there be any suggestion that Obama may have done wrong and it's "they're smearing Obama" oh my, how can anyone say such things about "Saint Obama". Talk about a double standard.

Posted by: JR | Mar 10, 2008 2:16:31 PM

I smell something funny. It's funny that people here see something coming down the pike that "may" be negative stuff for Obama and his followers revert back to Hillary and her decade and a half old scandals. It amazes me that Ken Star investigated these allegations against HRC and found nothing but people still want to believe that she is quilty. People really are afraid of strong powerful woman.

Posted by: Karl | Mar 10, 2008 2:18:05 PM

You, Obamanias, are making it seem like Obama is special just because he doesn't have much baggage. Any fresh first term Senate will have same amount of baggage as Obama. Obama was just smart enough to take the opportunity during a time when people wanted changed from Bush type of politics.

So if Obama has nothing to hide why did he run from Rezko questions in San Antonio, and making himself look bad? lol

Posted by: Dao | Mar 10, 2008 2:29:17 PM

It is becoming increasingly clear that O'Bama and Clinton are carrying some pretty heavy baggage. This is just the tip of the iceberg for O'Bama. Sitm watch and enjoy the show that has just begun. How did we end up with these two for our candidates?

Posted by: Bob H | Mar 10, 2008 2:37:15 PM

obama dances well, to well. how could you not know what a friend of 20 years does? PLEASE!!! people are just riding the obama wave as it were. but they eventually crash...

Posted by: sal | Mar 10, 2008 2:50:45 PM

Unfortunately for Sen. Obama it's almost inevitable that the ongoing Rezko corruption trial is going to bring out very damaging stuff. The Chicago press has already been all over him for this, and the national media will soon be forced to cover the "dirty old politics" of Sen. Holier-Than-Thou.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | Mar 10, 2008 2:58:33 PM

Obama claimed himself a clean and new type of politics. He lied because he was just the same as others... The bad but pretending good is the WORST... Please don't claim yourself as pure as Saint again....

Makin' a Mountain out of a Mole hill...

This is just too much fun for one fool...

Posted by: Jester of Fools | Mar 10, 2008 3:16:53 PM

so let me get this straight, after 200+ investigative news stories and an FBI investigation, neither of which turned up anything illegal on the part of Senator Obama, this is a scandal for him how? Because he knows the guy? C'mon Hsu was/is dirtier than Rezko. Bill Clinton has actually been convicted for lying to Congress and HRC still associates with him. Rezko is small potatoes compared to the Clinton associates that have been or are under investigation/indictment/impeachment.

Posted by: Louis | Mar 10, 2008 3:32:38 PM

did you people catch this:
"The memo does not say how much influence Obama had over the process of picking members for the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board, AP said.

And it did not indicate Obama was involved in the alleged corruption that later tainted the board."

The only apparent fact in this article is that Obama was 1 of 8 consulted in the appointing of a state board that later is being accused of wrong doing. No where in this article or any other does it prove that Obama has done anything illegal. He's not even being investigated. Can someone, anyone post a like with proof that Obama did anything wrong or is even being investigated for doing anything wrong... Waiting

Posted by: Kim | Mar 10, 2008 3:36:29 PM

baccarattwo it can be said that he wasnt involved because there is no proof whatsoever that he was and believe you me if it comes out that he were involved in anything illegal this country will nail his but to the wall. You people are just waiting for it.

Posted by: Kim | Mar 10, 2008 3:37:49 PM

Folks keep talking about the "Clinton scandals". Fact is, those "scandals" were investigated aggressively and spread on the front pages of all the major media at that time. Bottomline - nothing was found.

Obama on the other hand has not been investigated, and has gotten kid glove treatment by the press. Now, he may also come out squeeky clean in the end, but will that happen in time for the general election? Can Dems take that chance? And, what if he is not found to be clean? What do we do then?

Folks, we have serious business in this country - we need solid leaders with proven track records. My vote - Hillary. If she is not the nominee - McCain. Plain and simple.

Posted by: bw | Mar 10, 2008 3:39:26 PM

And the plot sickens!!! Wow,will all this come out in time to stop one of the biggest mistakes of our Democratic Party's exsistence (Thomas Jefferson's Party). We need Hillary Clinton. She has a firm grasp of the issues and a lifetime of committment to America. Americans, please wake up and smell the coffee. Let's not end up with four more years of the same. moblou KY bring the vote on to the rest of "US"

Posted by: Mary O'Bryan | Mar 10, 2008 3:41:58 PM

This IS significant. Obama is proving to be the old-school political insider he constantly harps on. I am starting to wonder if his decision to run for president right now, after emphatically stating that he wouldn't, has anything to do with the dirt that will be found on him as the Rezko trial continues.

I really hope that if Obama had shady dealings that we find out right now instead of after he is elected president. The more we learn about Obama the less he looks like the bringer of hope and change he claims to be.

Posted by: Haley Rodman Clemson | Mar 10, 2008 3:44:37 PM

You know what I find interesting? It is that Obama wants to accuse Hillary on her "judgement" on the War, yet his "bad judgement" with his association and implicit connection with Rezko is beyond just questionable.

Posted by: Heidi | Mar 10, 2008 3:45:38 PM

Good point Heidi!! If entering into a deal with someone who is under investigation is not Horrible judgement I do not know what is!! This is some of the worst judgement I have ever seen!!

Posted by: Jerry | Mar 10, 2008 3:53:43 PM

Here's a good "judgement"... Obama has been the chairman for Senate Foreign Relation Committee since January 2007, he has not held a single hearing since he took the position. His excuse, too busy with campaign. He pressed the wrong button 6 times on Senate votes, another good "judgement". If you don't have the time to be responsible for a position you took, resign, don't let it ride for over a year LOL. If you push the wrong vote button 6 times, please don't press that red button wrong 6 times when you become the president. LOL

Posted by: Dao | Mar 10, 2008 3:55:49 PM

It's about time Obama is summoned to testify in court about Rezko.
The media is too shy to report Obama's wrong dealings with Rezko for 20 years.

Posted by: Lisaky | Mar 10, 2008 4:03:53 PM

Obama got money from Rezko. Rezko got money from Nadmi Auchi. Nadmi Auchi made his vast fortune from doing business with Saddam Hussein.

It is all true. And if Obama would be the nominee the Republicans will crush Obama.

This is only the beginning. This trial is expected to last 4-5 months. They are not even close to revealing the Nadhmi Auchi link.

Posted by: Follow the Money | Mar 10, 2008 4:15:07 PM

The issues are not as simple as the Obama supporters would like every one else to believe. Mr.Rezko is a very corrupt political dealer who bulit very
unsafe buildings. Mr.Obama continued to write support letters for this individual and curried favors from this individual small and big ones including large sums of campaign money and assistance in buying house. Mr.Rezko is not an acquaintance but a very close ally of Obama. Mr.Obama is lying through is teeth!!!

Posted by: mike | Mar 10, 2008 4:15:42 PM

Let Oh-Bama and Michelle move into one of those slum like buildings that Obama never bothered to get fixed for all those poor people in his district Instead of being ashamed of America --- Michelle should be ashamed of her DO-NOTHING husband who "folds like a wet suit." when theres problems to solve- according to Senator Lindsay Graham and the New York Times. . Alot of us are not on the Piped Pipers bandwagon..

Posted by: jimbo | Mar 10, 2008 4:20:23 PM

What's worse is that Rezko was being bankrolled by a British/Iraqi guy named Nadhmi Auchi (who had ties to Sadamm Hussein). He made a huge money transaction to Rezko just before the questionable house deal involving Obama. Do a search on Auchi. Wait until this guy's name comes up in the Rezko trial.

Posted by: nhnell | Mar 10, 2008 4:21:07 PM

I don't understand why big time politicians and celebs support Obama. He does not have appropriate experience to be a President of USA, yet. The answer is MONEY. They were bought by Obama and his friends, Rezko and sub-prime mortgage lenders.

Posted by: Lisaky | Mar 10, 2008 4:23:43 PM

I just read a post by a Clinton supporter that "this man (Obama) comes with too much baggage. How can we support him." Is this person a supporter of Hillary Clinton, you know, the one who served as Bill Clinton's co-president who proudly proclaims the "vetting" of her baggage? Here is the intellectual height Clinton needs all her supporters to reach and not exceed to have a prayer.

This is the Bush Justice Dept and the Attorney Generals left in it are the one's who did not lose their jobs for refusing to perform political prosecutions.

This is also Clinton the fighter's machine. I would lay money odds on any number that if Bush or Clinton actually had anything of Obama he would have been carted off before Rezko and the others and he would have been offered a deal quicker and better than any deal OJ's Vegas co-defendants got. LOL.

Never seen anyone so "GREEDY & SELFISH" more than clinton family over past 31yrs have been existing as a human which makes it so hard sometimes to sawllow thinking about their ways of getting the white house back like that property on penn ave belongs to them. Probably their thoughts on getting nomination will be better using tony rezko trial linking obama to the case will give the ulimate gift they're looking for obviously they're chasing wrong ambition period cause we're here when "Bill Clinton" lied under oath about sex scandal, white water & more definitely we'll end their careers this year.

Posted by: Beck | Mar 10, 2008 4:55:04 PM

Lets just remember that Rezko has donated to a lot of Democrats as well as Republicans. Lets not just point the finger to Obama as many poiticians benefitted from this man.

This says it all:
Obama has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the Rezko case....
Obama has returned nearly $150,000 in political contributions from Rezko and his associates...

He's done nothing wrong here and he returned any money involving Rezko.

Posted by: John | Mar 10, 2008 6:44:32 PM

Obama is keeping quite on Rezko because he knows the prosecutor is playing a cat and mouse game with him and he doesn't want to get caught up in another lie. Unfortunately, Obama doesn't know what cards the prosecutor has! It's going to get much deeper - hold on!

Posted by: jim | Mar 10, 2008 6:48:48 PM

It's frightening that people are choosing to just ignore things like this. Is this a sign of immaturity? This needs to be looked at for people that are being put into office.

Posted by: John | Mar 10, 2008 6:49:02 PM

Considering the fact that the Clinton's have never been found guilty of anything ever, except Bill lying about a sexual encounter (why didn't we ask JFK about Monroe?), how can anyone fall to the lies and deceit of the Republican machine during the Clinton years? It's TERRIBLE what you Obama radicals are doing in your determination to win. Listen to yourselves, turning your backs on the most successful Democratic presidency in most of our lifetimes. A lot of Hillary supporters like Obama, but many in their own wisdom feel that at this moment in time, they trust and believe in Hillary now, and see that Obama will be better off working a country to full change when its infrastructure has been repaired.

Posted by: Benjamin | Mar 10, 2008 7:02:26 PM

The paper trail between Rezko and Obama is a long one, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, with Obama writing endorsement letters for the developer to get big government housing projects. Obama also hired as an intern the son of a Rezko associate who was later convicted of fraud. And after the City of Chicago had to sue Rezko for not providing heat to low-income tenants, Obama remained on good terms with him, getting all those political contributions and $625,000 towards the purchase of a home. In the end, however, the national media will likely devote more coverage to Hillary Clinton's tax returns.

Posted by: Factcheck2 | Mar 10, 2008 7:18:41 PM

Rezko is under inditement for extorsion and political favor selling.Who was Rezko extorting money for Obama and his senate campaign, who gave back 150,000 dallors when the story broke but did he tell anyone that he was a board menber on the very board his good friend is getting investigated for favor selling and extorsion no hes said nothing.Rezko was also being sued for failing to pay back G.E financial 3.5 million,at the same time he was buying the lot next door to Obama,a lot that Obama could not afford to buy,so rezko bought it.I dont think the forced campaign contributions to Obama for contracts and loans by the board was anything less than a plan by both Rezko ansd Obama

i predict hillary releases tax returns on april 15th..nothing scandalous in them..and then the messiah will really look exactly like Ken Starr..

we shall see..or as Hillary says about rush.."Be careful what you wish for.."
by the way this story will break right before the Florida/Michigan re-do vote..and guess who will win both...?

JR - ok let's talk about the Clinton scandals. 40 million of our tax dollars were used to investigate. Crimes committed by Hillary Clinton = 0. Best they could do was expose a sexual impropriety that is irrelevant to the job as President. Vetting and investigation into Obama has just begun and may yield crimes committed by Obama.

The curious thing about Obama & Rezko is the denial & big lie at the SC debate with Clinton & Edwards.
When Obama tagged Clinton with her time on the Wal-Mart board, she shot back with "what about your ties with the slum-lord Rezko?"
No, he shakes his head & says "NO, NO, NO". He went on the say he only knew him thru about 5 hrs of billing for the lawfirm he worked for. Clinton got boo'd. Obama took SC by a landslide. That Sunday, the day after the SC election, Obama went on a news show & confessed he & Rezko were friends & he was a fundraiser for 20 yrs.

WHY the lie? Shortly after, Anderson Cooper "Keeping them Honest" did one little small glimspe into this.
They produced a letter, on the US Senate letterhead of Senator Barack Obama,on behalf of Rezko. To assure the parties concerned that Rezko was on the up & up. That's a pretty good reference. From a Senator.

So my questions are these >>>
How do you say Obama is innocent of all dirty dealings?
How many of the swindles would not have happened if he wasn't Rezko's "character reference"?
Were any of the "deals" that now find Rezko in jail a result of Obama's letters of reference? There is something here not yet discovered or not yet made public. He lied too hard, to fast & too much to have clean hands. And it was done in public on that debate stage in Myrtle Bch, SC.

Posted by: Sophia | Mar 10, 2008 9:19:01 PM

Hilary was sleeping with Bill and didn't know where he'd been!

So, why is it farfetched to think that Obama indeed may not have known what Rezko was all about.

Every great nation had it's downfall. I think that this is the beginning of the end for this once great country.

Posted by: mythinking | Mar 10, 2008 9:26:31 PM

Health Facilities Planning Boards - These groups control allocation of high ticket items like MRI's, Chemotherapy centers, Cardiac Care centers - and represent an enormous opportunity for graft or "pay to play" schemes. The fact that Michelle Obama moved from law and advocacy to the the University of Chicago Medical system while Rezko was consulting with Obama about appointment to this board bears looking into. There is more here than meets the eye.

During "Watergate" the question to President Nixon was : what did you know and when did you know it ?? The most important question with Obama should be; When did you know Rezko was under scrutiny, under indictment and when did you separate yourself from him and his associates. Until he can answer that, he is not fit to run for president!
Keep your eye on the Rezko trial, it is getting really interesting.

Posted by: Di | Mar 10, 2008 10:27:58 PM

I have a great idea! If there is any possibility that someone is guilty, lets throw them in jail. Why do we have to find the evidence. Also, lets forget about history so we can make the same mistake again. Forgot all the things the Clintons were accused of and later was found to be false. Forget that, throw Obama in jail. Proud Americans know he is guilty. Stop Obama!!!

Posted by: MikeMo1947 | Mar 10, 2008 10:57:01 PM

Obama is a corrupt politician. I don't call that "change." He should not be the Democratic nominee as you ain't seen nothing yet. Rezko is just the tip of the iceberg.

Are we going to risk losing the Whitehouse on this guy.Well,I guess I'll have to wait for universal heathcare for another 8 years. Thanks St.Obama.

First it was the debate in South Carolina, where Obama stated he never had dealings with Rezko, except for 4-6 hours for a church group that he was working for. Then came the news about Obamas house and Rezko who was being sued by G.E. financial for defaulting on a 3.5 million dallor loan but he could find 625,000 to help his buddy buy a house. Now today during testimony for Rezkos trial,it was anounced that Obama was one of the eight members of a board, that Rezko is accused of selling political favors, extorting money for contracts ect. And still Obama will not acknowlege that this has happened.McCain has an aide at the Rezko trial taking notes and getting info for later use.

First, a little bit of information was released against BO. BO denied immediately just like the week before 3/4 on the conversation between his economic adviser and Canada. Then more detailed information like memo are behind it just like a bait waiting for your screw-up.

Posted by: abcabc_123 | Mar 10, 2008 11:51:56 PM

Hillary, please don't offer him a ticket to be VP! After months
of the media adulation, they are suddenly realising that Obama is all talk.
The race is on and your message of experience is getting through.
He can promise "change"but change is the only real permanent thing in life, it happens, whether he makes hollow promises, or not , so his promises carry no weight! SOLUTIONS are what people want to see!
With regard to Rezko, the question to President Nixon on Watergate was
:What did you know and when did you know it ??
Therefore the most important questions for Obama is :
When did you know Rezko was under scrutiny, under indictment
and when did you separate yourself from him and his associates?
Until he answers that, he is not fit to run for President, there is
too much "sleaze"about to surface.

Isn't it comforting to know that there are so many expert, judgemental, and investigative individuals in the U.S. such as the many who have posted on this board. Just goes to show how screwed up the American Justice system really is. Used to be innocent till proved guilty. Do you really believe one can get a fair trial by your peers in this country? Now you don't even have to be charged with anything, and you are guilty. At least the Clinton's HAVE BEEN CHARGED. Hillary recently skated the law, and being called as a co-defendant in the Paul vs Clinton case, working it's way through the court of Appellate Judge Aurelio Munoz in California by claiming protection against tort fraud conspiracy charges under the California anti-SLAPP law. At that hearing in April 2007, however, Judge Munoz admonished the lead Clinton attorney, David Kendall, that unequivocally any attempt to DENY Senator Clinton's testimony as a witness in the case, would be "Dead on Arrival" Lead attorney, David Kendall then instructed Paul's attorney, Colette Wilson, that none of Clinton's three attorney's of record would accept a witness subpoena for Clinton's deposition on her behalf, and there would be no cooperation in the process the Judge stated should include Clinton's testimony. This is outright contempt for the rule of law. I guess Hillary will depend upon her Secret Service protectors to protect her from the process servers as well as school children wishing to get interviews of the Clinton's for their school papers.

No matter how you throw it. Dirt is still dirt.. Mr. Obama is silent because this is just the tip of the iceberg. This could bring him down if he is found to be more involved in this corruption trial.

I hope someone finally publishes the dirt on Obama before its' too late. It is obvious from the NAFTA deal and others that he is a crooked politician willing to say or do anything to get elected.

According to the AP, although the memo does not say how much influence Obama had over the process of picking members for the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board, Sen. Barack Obama again is guilty by association. The fact that the property was put in Michele Obama’s name further puts to question the legality of the transaction. As a married man, each time that I have purchases a home, my wife and I both were on the title. As a lawyer, Obama knew what he was doing no matter how the media makes excuses for their favorite candidate. Again this shows how this inexperienced politician lacks knowledge even in the law area. Even if the article does not indicate Obama was involved in the alleged corruption that later tainted the board, his acts again are questionable.

The news media outlets are describing New York State Gov. Eliot Spitzer, as one of the democrat party shinny star, upcoming, holy clean, new hope in the democrat party? Sound like the description of another upcoming democrat’s candidate (Obama).

Obama has several scandals. The Iowa independent reported in October of last year about a coup that Obama started so Hillary would be the sole person left on the Michigan ballot. He wanted her to look bad so she would lose the votes in Iowa. Several joined him but Dodd and Kucinich did not. He succeeded -- Iowans are very particular about their first caucus status and Obama's coup worked. Often we wonder why someone has crooked friends -- who would be willing to borrow half a million dollars+ even if you are broke -- like Rezko. It is not surprising now. The reasons are coming out. The politician who talks hope is really the leader of a political coup. He has so many fools in his bag. I am so glad that I am not one of them!!
