White House Ousts Top Official Accused of Political Favoritism

April 30, 2008 10:13 AM

Embattled administration official Lurita Doan resigned Tuesday evening,  acknowledging that her move came at the request of the White House.

"Early this evening I was asked to submit my resignation, and I have just done so," Doan wrote in an email to her staff which was obtained by several outlets, including Federal Computer week, which was the first to report Doan's ouster.

The White House, which reportedly summoned Doan to a meeting Tuesday afternoon, is said to be planning an announcement of Doan’s departure Wednesday.

Around Washington, heads are scratching over the timing of Doan’s apparent dismissal from the top spot of the Government Services Administration – a massive agency which contracts for billions in goods and services for other agencies, from paper clips to office space and auto leases.

"The President is grateful for her service and wishes her and her family the best," said White House spokeswoman Emily Lawrimore in an e-mailed statement Wednesday, responding to an inquiry about the timing of Doan's departure and whether it had been prompted by the White House.

Doan had appeared to weather investigations by both Congress and the Office of Special Counsel (OSC), a Justice Department division charged with probing allegations of improper political activity by government employees.

Last May, OSC confirmed Doan asked other GSA employees to think how their agency could help "our candidates," following a 2006 PowerPoint presentation by the White House political office on Republicans in tight congressional races.

In an email to reporters at Government Executive early Wednesday morning, Doan appeared to defend her actions. "I would rather get fired for something I believe in, and a cause I was willing to fight for, rather than to believe in nothing worth being fired for," Doan wrote, according to the magazine.

Very interesting. Wonder when/if we'll get the full story on this? Given her past morally questinable actions and overtly (and sometimes illegally) partisan approach to her job, I wonder what could be bad enough for her to take a stand on what she "believes in."

Though I was both shocked and appalled after viewing the CSPAN coverage of the Congressional Testimony given by our former Administrator, I do believe the GOOD she has done for the American Taxpayers FAR outways the goings on of her acts called into question.

The problem with GSA is as it has always been "the good ole boys" club. It's not what you know, it's who you know. The problem here is that Bush's ratings quite deservidly have reached an all time low - and it is no longer "popular" to choose that side. Additionally, if you choose to state opinions openly, and with conviction, you are considered a "trouble maker".

I'm surprised they made her resign instead of taking over the stapler filler position in Chicago given to a Union member who had formally filed numerous complaints on behalf of agency members. He was told to "check stapler levels" after the last complaint.

I used to believe that I too, could make a difference. Being outspoken in the Government is not welcomed. Keep your drone hat on please and stand in line accordingly...or else!

"WE THE PEOPLE" lets get together & impeach B&C before they can do anymore damage? we all know that the only reason that the debt is so high, is that so much money is going into re-stocking those billion dollar weapons & who makes those weapons, shell companies owned by, well we(WTP) do not have a DOJ anymore, so those men will never see a court? talk about the 5k toilet? this is a lot bigger than that!

nothing makes me laugh more than you holier than thou democrat liberals when you complain about republican/conservative behavior. How quickly you have forgotten all the incompetence/ bribery /dishonesty and criminal behavior during the Clinton years. It would be nice if you would grow up at least to the point that you could admit that we do a bad job all the way around in picking and controlling our leaders.

What Clinton did wrong is a drop in a very Big Bucket to what B & C have done to the Country. That Deficit has been doubled by Bush and his cronies. In the last 7 years Bush managed to spend as much as all the Ex-Presidents before him.
