Embattled Official Defends Pricey Hand Towels
May 07, 2008 12:43 PM
Amid the cloud of alleged criminality and political machinations kicked up by yesterday's raid on the office and home of presidential appointee Scott Bloch, one charge seemed incongruous: that Bloch had misspent four hundred taxpayer dollars on custom-made hand towels for his washroom, which bore the official seal of his office.
So whispered an anonymous source to the Washington Post, anyway. But is it true?
Yes, the towels are quite real, and a legitimate expense, Bloch said through a spokesman Wednesday. Bloch has served since 2003 as the head of the Office of Special Counsel, charged with protecting the rights of government whistleblowers and investigating charges of improper political activity by government workers.
"Scott, as a presidentially-appointed, Senate-confirmed member of the administration gets an allowance for things," spokesman Jim Mitchell explained. "He paid about $300 for some towels that had the OSC seal on it. He took a couple home, which he paid for himself."
Mitchell compared the towels to carpets in the Department of Justice headquarters which feature that agency’s seal. He also observed that his boss could be thrifty – for instance, Bloch has always shunned the car and driver which comes as a perk of his position.
Asked if Bloch planned to step down, Mitchell said, "Not that I know of. He hasn't mentioned anything like that today."
Mitchell confirmed that Bloch is scheduled to testify before a grand jury as part of the investigation which prompted yesterday's raid, believed to center on suspicions Bloch may have destroyed evidence during a separate investigation into his activities. Bloch maintains his innocence.

This is why we shouldnt elect liberals to power. They are fond of fancy handtowels and corruption, the very two things that make a story like this possible.

Call me fiscally conservative, but a set of $2.00 hand towels from WalMart dry hands just as well as ones costing two orders of magnitude more.
Why is our government spending this kind of money on these things? Has the GAO ever done an audit on 'non-luxury' purchases to see if maybe instead of $1500.00 pillow cases, they could get by with ones costing, say, $5.00 and save the tax payers some money? Maybe if the trappings of power came with perks based on performance people would concentrate on doing a good job.

This is pathetic. It just goes to show that these politicans do not know or care about the people of this country. Does he think that American tax payers need or care about hand towels with his pretty seal?!?!?!

Funny how the media just keeps covering for these people in our government. Here in the Midwest we think spending $400 of taxpayer money on an embossed towel in these times (recession & war) IS a gross misuse. So why wouldn't this fat cat shut down whistleblowers?

One more example of arrogance among the elite. It is easy to spend and then justify the cost when it is not your money. These clowns have no idea how the working people in this country have to survive. They have so many perks they never have to worry about gas prices or social security going broke.

Jujubee Jones--Your response makes no sense. Mr. Bloch was appointed by President Bush. I'm pretty sure that doesn't make him a "liberal".

Another shining memeber of the GOP culture of corruption. I thought Bush was going to eliminate coruption in his administartion? Instead the Bush administration is by far the most corrupt ever!

HOW MANY FAMILIES CAN EAT FOR A MONTH ON THE MONEY SPENT ON HAND-TOWELS? WHAT A VULGAR DISPLAY OF SELF-IMPORTANCE! SAD FACT, IT IS PROBABLY REPEATED THOUSANDS OF TIMES OVER IN WASHINGTON. WANT A NEW BRIDGE MINNESOTA? HAVE EVERYONE SELL THEIR $300 HAND TOWELS.............REVOLTING!

Ummmm Jubilee this dude is a Presidential employee....doubtful he is a liberal except for when he is living on the public teat

uhm i'm a democrat and i'm considered liberal. Why would anyone want a 400 dollar towel? My girlfriend complains because i'll try to get cheaper towels than the ones at big lots.

Well, we know this guy voted for Bush BOTH TIMES.
Some poster on here referred to him as a liberal.. Umm NO, overspending without any valid reason would qualify him 100% republican, 100% 'conservative' (which no longer has anything to do with conservation)

It's enough to make someone vote Libertarian. When we, as a country, cast a vote from a two party system there are just so many politicians available. This government of ours is broken and in dire need of repair. Nothing ever changes in DC except that the graft finds more and more ways to steal our money. There is but one way to change, Obama, throw out the system and get a new one. You can't change the dog, Obama. Just the tail of it. It will still bite, growl, raise havoc and leave it's droppings all over the world. Change the dog...not the (Pick your body part here). That's change.

This is typical BUSH..And you can bet when this MORON leaves office in 252 more days the towels will go with him..I just would like to know how much this stupid wedding cost the taxpayers. You can bet the farm on it, it cost the taxpayers a ton of money and CHEAP BUSH stuck it to the taxpayers..

Custom made hand towels? Talk about ego!

Sorry but Mr. Bloch is a life-long Republican. The abuses of public office during the last seven years of a conservative Republican president will go down in the annals of history as the most corrupt, venal, and entitled since America was founded. Just proving that in a general way, Republicans are out for themselves--they could care less about the American people.

This man is not a liberal. He is a Bush appointee. What planet are you people on, can't you read? The man is a republican. Liberals are the ones with compassion, common sense and intelligence.
