WEWS Cleveland: Natural Gas Boom Has Hidden Danger

May 02, 2008 1:49 PM

From The Blotter:

Wews_paynes_080502_main Our affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio is reporting on the hidden dangers of natural gas wells being drilled in residential neighborhoods.

NewsChannel5 Chief Investigator Duane Pohlman interviews an elderly couple who lost their home after a massive natural gas explosion, which was traced to a new well located just down the road from their home.

Rick and Thelma Payne, pictured, were asleep at their home when they were shaken out of their bed.

"The bed went up and came down and crashed," Thelma said. "It was terrifying that night, and it's been terrifying ever since."

While regulations have recently been tightened, the changes have done little to address concerns about where new natural gas wells are located. Under the current guidelines, wells can be drilled as close as 100 feet from an occupied home or apartment.

O bama says we have to have gas tax to discourage gas use. OK. We stop gas use, who pays the lost gas tax revenue? We are paying for rads and bridges with a tax that O bama wants to eliminate. 18 cents per gal and millions of gallons used each year. Grab your feet and bend over folks

What does Obama have to do with this story? This story is about drilling for natural gas close to people's homes, in residential neighborhoods. Who would want that?

To David. Clinton and McCain want to eliminate all federal gasoline taxes.

Obama says to keep them and there'll be less driving, but the remaining gas tax collection will save 6000 good building jobs a year and make our infrastructure safer.
Most experts say that if the US drops federal gas tax, the gas companies will just increase the price of gas 18.x% to cover the lost tax and the money will go to Big Oil.

It's to them that we bend over when we drive gas guzzlers.

Apologies to Sue, I know the article above was about natural gas, but I thought david needed some things explained about the calls for a moratorium on the federal gasoline tax.

Watch out folks- this residential drilling is happening all over Ohio as well as Michigan, Texas, and California and maybe others. On our street - we all got sick as a result of fugitive leaks of toxic gases during the drilling in the middle of the night!

Now I see why these environmentalists fought so hard to keep drilling away from wildlife- geesh. What a dangerous mess- these things are worse than nuclear power plants because the plants are strictly regulated to keep them safe. Yet another reason to run not walk toward alternative energy.

Capitalism is all about profit and gain, folks, not about people's lives or safety.
