Stray Guns in Baghdad

July 11, 2008 1:24 PM

The U.S. embassy in Baghdad is warning its employees: don't leave your weapons laying around.

"Weapons are continuing to be left unattended throughout the Embassy compound," according to an unclassified memo to employees, obtained by ABC News, sent earlier this week. "The improper handling of weapons has legal and political implications."

Just to be clear, the embassy reminds employees:

-- Don't leave your gun unattended when using the embassy pool. "If using the Embassy Pool, you must designate a gear guard."
-- Don't leave guns unattended in vehicles, even if the vehicle is locked.
-- And don't carry your gun if you've been drinking. "No weapon will be carried while drinking alcoholic beverages."

Anyone caught violating the rules will have his or her weapons confiscated, the document warns, and a supervisor will have to sign a letter requesting that it be returned after the individual has "been counseled on proper weapons retention."

The memo warns that "additional disciplinary action" could be enforced.

The memo provides no indication exactly how widespread the problem is, but the message applies to the massive security staff and contractors defending the Green Zone.

Don't carry a weapon loaded.
Don't leave it by the pool.

These folks need to tighten their shot group.

what;s your point, dude? Troops on patrol should have a few cold ones inside their armor patrol vehicles? Nobody should relax inside the embassy compound? Hard working people who are engulfed by 112 degree heat shouldn't be allowed to swim? dude, c'mon...

OK, I give up. Read this little tidbit a couple of times. What exactly was this articles purpose?

That these people are human just like us...or was it solely to embarrass and belittle our own people??

Im thinking the latter.

But it makes top billing. Whats up, no car bombs to chase etc.

Wait till you get back to DC. That is where the real danger of getting shot is, or in Detroit, or in East St. Louis, or Detroit, or Philly ....

agree, no point here, just an attempt to make the personnel look stupid...lame article. Look out for your own and report something that counts over there. 100 thousand + soldiers and this is the story you post, come on there are numerous narratives being created at any moment in Iraq right now.

Why do you simplify the question to an either/or and not consider more explanations? Every one in any situation needs to be in control of their deadly weapons. Do humans like you leave weapons around. Humans like me act with great responsibility when it comes to weapons.

There have been thirteen military men electrocuted according to the internet in Iraq because of faulty electrical work by a civilian contractor. Being an electrician by trade, one was to many, having a weapon would not have helped any of our soldiers. Shame on the people in charge that through their negligence allowed this to happen. The last one, a green beret was electrocuted in the shower. Shame on these people with their memos about firearms being left unattended in a safe zone; the only place that seems to be an unsafe area is the soldiers shower and swimming pool. SDhame on the people in charge!!

Yes indeed, the only reason about an article on the careless (more like stupidity) of embassy personnel and "contractors" leaving guns (automatic weapons included) lying around unattended was to embarass those "hard working" foggy bottom paper pushers and mercenaries. I mean why else would a memo warning these parasites that guns and alcohol don't mix and to keep track of your weapon be published. Surely not to show the public what a bunch a life these "hard working people" have, not being able to take their guns to the pool or the bar. Sure, why shouldn't folks occupying someone else's country that they've destroyed in an illegal war started on a lie not be able to go for a swim or have ice for their Scotch while the Iraqi people don't have water, electricity, medical care (hey, we don't either); schools or their loved ones back alive. But at least they've got soccer fields and soccer balls, according to the propaganda.
