Obama Site Linked to 'Bush Shoe Toss' Event

January 09, 2009 5:26 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis reports:

Colin Powell held a press conference in Washington, D.C., Friday, touting the launch of Barack Obama's new Web site, USAService.org, which allows Americans to find -- and to promote -- local service opportunities that are searchable by zip code.

President Bush's former secretary of state said he was on the site this morning and vouched for its usefulness.

But here's betting that Powell didn't have time to go through all of the events on it.

Wanting to see how the Web site works, I typed in my hometown zip code in Los Angeles to find events within a 10-mile radius.

It pointed me to several events, including a blood drive, a graffiti cleanup, and an "Obama Celebration and Bush Shoe Toss."

The event, which was listed as a "Day of Service -- January 19," is taking place at the soon-to-open Carnivale Café on the corner of Vermont and Normal.

"Come celebrate with us," wrote Gilbert Gazan, 46, in the event's description. "Say goodbye to old Georgie ... Throw a shoe at a poster of Bush and win a free drink."

Click here to see the LA Weekly cover the restaurant plans to use as the shoe-throwing target.

Other than doing an occasional "very cursory" review of the site to make sure there are no "glaringly inappropriate" events on it, the Presidential Inaugural Committee is "not vetting the groups that are offering service opportunities or the individuals that are offering service opportunities or the people who want to participate," according to Linda Douglass, the committee's chief spokesperson.

"This is a hub," said Douglass. "It is very much like CraigsList, matching up individuals and groups who want to participate with opportunities to serve."

Asked about the "Bush Shoe Toss" advertised on Obama's site, Douglass said, "That obviously does not sound like any description of public service that we have in mind. But again, we are not in the business of regulating this. We're just in the business of giving people opportunities."

A few minutes later, after talking with her colleagues, Douglass called back to say that the committee has removed the "Bush Shoe Toss" from the site because "it does not appear those activities are connected to community service."

Gazan, who was inspired by the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at Bush, is undeterred.

Asked if he plans to go forward with the "Bush Shoe Toss" contest now that it has been deleted from USAService.org, Gazan said, "Oh, yeah, we have 22,000 students across the street at Los Angeles Community College."

"The whole world is breathing a sigh of relief," he added, referring to Bush's looming departure.

The Iraqi shoe thrower is a celebrity because his act spoke for a great majority of the world. If you loved Bush, no amount of persuasion can convince you that he was a disaster for the U.S. and the world, but facts are facts: He is widely seen, both here and especially all over the world, as one of the worst leaders in recent history. Compared to what many of us feel should be done to him, a thrown shoe is very civilized.

Colin Powell is so stupid and arrogant. I wouldn't trust him to give me a cup of water. It would be poisoned by the mere touch of this double-minded, flip-flopping politically expedient hypocrite. I wonder when he will be appointed to some high paying government job under his new found messiah Barack Obama. Powell is a democrat who like to claim he is a republican. Republican in name only is too nice for "Colon Plowell!

I do not trust Judas Powell and backstabber Colin.

indithinker,

How's my 401k and portfolio doing? Great, thanks for asking! I'm buying as much as I can while it's all on sale.

The only thing that's bankrupt is your intellect.

Posted by: Dave | Jan 9, 2009 7:09:39 PM

Yes, please keep claiming that it is all GW's fault. Just remember, over the next few years to hold that same opinion about the in coming president. I'm certain you are fair minded and will blame it all on Obama. LOL

Posted by: truu | Jan 9, 2009 7:10:55 PM

People should have more respect for the president regardless of political party. Bush haters... Get a grip and look at reality! Bush has kept this country safe. History will show that G.W. Bush was a strong president who never made decisions for the purposes of a popularity contest. Ironic it is that Obama will indeed continue most of the same policies as Bush. Yet those who criticized Bush the most will seemingly now find these policies acceptable because a Democrat is in the White House. Loving your country as an American is more important than which side you take in partisan politics. I hope Obama will make the right decisions as president. He already seems to be worrying many of the far-left who voted for him.

It's too bad Bush's security didn't grab that thrown shoe and ram it right up the little jihadist's backside. I'm still holding on to hope that someone sends a projectile in Obama-The-Liar's direction. Now THAT would be good old fashioned American justice. Anyone know why Obama had his entire life's records sealed? You know..the birth certificate, college records and medical records? There are MANY people out here that are on to what Barack Hussein Obama is hiding. It's just a matter of time.

Posted by: watcher | Jan 9, 2009 7:13:26 PM

no, the Democrats didn't bankrupt the country. I know the right-wing radio guys are really pushing this argument, but as usual, if they actually ever read a book, they'd be smarter, and might not try to sell this drivel. (ok, that's a wild hypothetical, and they'd probably still be idiots, but one could hope...). The point is, the general tendency of our country and its citizens to live off of credit is what caused our current crisis, and that is an endemic problem, not confined to Dems or Repubs. The Dems can be blamed for a general adherence to the principles of "spending away society's ills", but the Repubs can be equally faulted for their willingness to completely scr*w future generations to make today's corporate bottom line look rosier. Anyone who tries to blame this on one party or the other either lacks understanding or has no respect for truth

I did not vote for Obama, but would personally beat the hell out of any man that threw a shoe at him in my presence.

Where is Obama's illegal aunt?

Posted by: Sheila Martinez | Jan 9, 2009 7:15:04 PM

Watcher is an idiot...yeah, those corporations are horrible. They employ millions of Americans and pay retirement benefits (401Ks, etc) to millions of Americans.

Posted by: Martina Olaf | Jan 9, 2009 7:17:40 PM

Dantheguy9...I tell you what...why don't you go hug a terrorist today. Yes, the people that hate America and all it stands for are soooo very happy that this country has idiots like you that support hatred and hatred of our leader(s). They are even happier that idiots like you are free to express your hatred of your leader(s) so they can impress on their people how really terrible we are and we deserve to die and/or be killed. The only disaster I see here is the thankless, self-righteous that were all behind President Bush after 9/11 and then let the MSM and terrorist tell them how wrong they were...sleep well at night for the next 4 years...

Posted by: youAREkidding | Jan 9, 2009 7:18:26 PM

I'm not a Bush fan in the least, and I agree he's been a horrible chief exec. but he's the president of our country, and the presidency itself deserves our respect. the people who think this is funny are just sick.

as others have said, let's see how funny you find it when someone wants to do something similar to Obama.

Posted by: michiganruth | Jan 9, 2009 7:19:46 PM

I hope when the tables turn on Obama and those same people throw shoes at him it is not called racist.

I so agree with you on this!

Bush hater and Obama hater the fact remains that Bush damaged our nation and we do need Obama to change it around!!! I support neither! But facts are facts.

Posted by: JULS | Jan 9, 2009 7:22:08 PM

watcher: That sounds uncomfortably close to a threat against Obama...you should be careful. No, Obama didn't have his "entire life records" sealed. That's simply a pathetic lie, and I'm not even sure how you think it's possible to do that, but it just shows how ridiculous your beliefs are. I'm not sure what "good old-fashioned American justice" is in your eyes, but I'm guessing it has little to do with justice and less to do with good. To me, justice would be served if we as Americans made a vow never to elect another loser like Bush again.

Posted by: Dantheguy9 | Jan 9, 2009 7:22:58 PM

What's the big deal?

Why wouldn't the country want to celebrate the departure of America's worst president?

And for all the Republicans out there still apologizing for the Bush disaster, just remember to thank us for stopping your hero from losing your Social Security money to his stock market cronies.

You're welcome.

"watermelon eating contest"?

I didn't realize that throwing shoes was a racist act.

Posted by: Gars Luber | Jan 9, 2009 7:24:26 PM

I see there is a genius on here trying to link Obama to terrorism by calling him Osama.

If that person were educated, they'd know that Bush praised the Taliban in April 2001, slept all the way up to 911, and has a family fortune directly from Osama daddy. We're talking over 1 billion dollars directly from the Bin Laden family. It's no wonder that Bush didn't take Osama seriously before and after 911.

There are some ignorant Americans, but that guy might be at the top.

COLIN POWELL ALL ALONG HAS BEEN A CLOSET LIBERAL, LEANINGS WHICH HE MASKED SO THAT HE COULD MOVE UP THE CHAIN OF COMMAND, FIRST IN THE MILITARY AND THEN IN SEVERAL REPUBLICAN ADMINISTRATIONS. AND THEN HE GAVE THE MOST DISINGEUOUS REASONS TO BACK OBAMA. ET TE BRUTE.

Posted by: CICERO | Jan 9, 2009 7:29:02 PM

Gars,

Eating watermelon is not racist. Throwing shoes in some countries is the lowest of lows however.

You figure it out.
