Republicans Find Voice in Opposing Stimulus: 'Oh, My God'
January 15, 2009 1:33 PM
ABC News' Rick Klein and Dean Norland report: House Minority Leader John Boehner needed only three words to serve notice that President-elect Barack Obama is nowhere close to achieving the big bipartisan vote on the stimulus package he wants so badly.
"There was no Republican input at all involved in what House Democrats outlined today," Boehner, R-Ohio, said at a news conference at the Capitol. "I just took a moment to look over the draft from Chairman [David] Obey and the draft or outline from Chairman [Charlie] Rangel. Oh, my God.
"I just can't tell you how shocked I am at what we're seeing. You know, it's clear that they're moving on this path along the flawed notion that we can borrow and spend our way back to prosperity."
As we discussed earlier, Republicans heard the Obama team's discussion of $300 billion in tax cuts and thought (or hoped to think) that was a floor. Many Democrats, meanwhile, thought it was an unacceptably high ceiling, and pressed that number down to the $275 billion in the package produced by House leaders, in consultation with Obama aides.
This is not the final package. But it has to be dismaying to the Obama folks to see finger-pointing and recriminations that fall along such familiar party lines.

The last paragraph needs explanation. It's meaning is unclear except for it being clearly partisan hack journalism.

Bush never included Democrats in his initiatives either let alone talks concerning them. Everyone knows to expect the right wing Republican obstructionists to play their game. And they wonder why they lost - hummm. By 2010 they will be dinasours - extinct!!

I don't know why it would be dismaying to Obama, since during his 2 years in US Senate and years in the State Senate he was one of the most partisan in the chamber.

hey eyeonyour, do you remember Ted FRICKIN' Kennedy writing the education bill so many years ago? HELLO! Bush tried that whole "new tone" thing on everything but the war and security. That got us the bad housing legislation that put us in this mess.

Where is the change we can believe in?

"Bush never included Democrats in his initiatives either let alone talks concerning them. "
It's a pity "liberals" don't (or can't) read.
Bush TRIED to deal with T Kennedy, Kerry, Pelosi, etc etc. when he assumed office in 2001 and 2002. However, he soon learned that the socialist party bites the hand that pets.

Kat - amen.
eyeonyour - you may very well be right about being extinct. America may not survive you and the other members of the liberal left.

When Bush consulted Democrats, his worst achievements resulted.

i was going to say that

In the spirit of Homer Simpson, may I add: Mmmm, dinasours. Try us, we're tasty. Much better than RINO-sours.
Posted by: Karen Otravez | Jan 15, 2009 2:10:43 PM
eyeonyour,
That makes no sense! He let Democrats write most of his bills. No Child Left Behind etc. That's why most of us Republicans can't stand him either.
Posted by: Ted | Jan 15, 2009 2:10:49 PM
Well, Bushie and the Republicans spent and spent like there was no tomorrow. Now the Republicans are going to go over everything with a magnifying glass and say 'OMG'! This Country is in dire straits, and yes, we may need to borrow more money to start to get back on the right track. To the Republicans... you are already rich - take a salary cut and vote for Main Street America that really needs Assistance from our Government. To hell with Wall Street and the Big Banks... remember, we are the voters, too.

Uh, "Bush never included Democrats in his initiatives..."
Do you even know what you are talking about, eyeonyour? Base your reasoning on facts, not HuffPo/DailyKos fluff points.
Posted by: Jake | Jan 15, 2009 2:11:09 PM
Actually eyeonyour, your memory is not so good. George Bush let Ted Kennedy write his education proposal, and these types of "reaching across the aisle" were what brought down the Bush administration. The Democrats are eating their young right now, and stabbing each other in the back. Obama knows that with his power hungry party primed to screw him at the first turn, he needs the republicans to help build some type of majority in congress. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will push him down to get in front of the camera.

We are already broke and will be unable to pay off the most recent and proposed rounds of money printing. If protesting such destructive ideas is obstruction, then so be it. This morning the Los Angeles mayor held his hand out for $300M+ federal dollars for parks and buses. Not!
Posted by: Richard | Jan 15, 2009 2:11:44 PM
Hey Kat....since when is accountability synonymous with obstruction? Wouldn't it be nice if the idiots in DC (both parties)actually acknowledged that this money belongs to WE THE PEOPLE? Simply back-filling a monstrous hole with trillions of OUR dollars is not the answer..and will surely lead to the death of our Government. Please don't take this out on one party. They have BOTH failed us.

Republicans should be more vocal in their opposition to this package.
43,000,000 voted against Obama. They are waiting to see what will be happening.
No one wants to take on someone else's debt. Most people have done without, saved and waited; to now ask them to shoulder the cost of those who failed to do so will bring about a serious backlash from the public.

Two Words: Stock UP. The demoncrats are going to completely destroy this economy. You think you have seen bad, you aint seen nothin yet. But of course, this has been their Socialist/Communist plan all along. So Stock up on Guns and Food. This is going to get ugly.

Obama - the one who brings everyone together... hahahahaha hahahahahahaha. What a bunch of crap.

When will someone be a good leader? When will we Americans become the practical, constructive, problem-solvers we can be? Who cares about democrats and republicans? There is a fiscal crisis that is draining us all white. Stop the hate. Make our country work! Yes that means us all.
