Boehner: Time for Government Spending Freeze

March 06, 2009 10:14 AM

Abc_rick_klein_081203_main_2 ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, reacted to the rise in unemployment today by calling for a federal government spending freeze.

“Washington Democrats seem more determined than ever to continue pursuing tax hikes and pork-barrel spending increases that are only proving to make matters worse,” said Boehner, R-Ohio, in a statement.

“President Obama campaigned against wasteful spending last year and has renewed commitment to fight it now that he is in office.  I hope he will follow through on that promise by vetoing this legislation if it passes the Senate and working with House Republicans to enact a spending freeze for the remainder of this fiscal year.”

The move come as Senate Democrats scramble to find the votes to pass a $410 billion spending bill to cover federal expenditures through the rest of this fiscal year. The bill increases so-called “discretionary” spending by about 8 percent -- and includes some 8,500 earmarked special projects inserted by lawmakers.

The president has said he will sign the bill regardless of criticisms from Republicans and some Democrats. But it’s developing into yet another rallying point for an opposition party that’s finding its way to a new identity under the Obama administration.

8500 pork spending earmarks.

“President Obama campaigned against wasteful spending last year and has renewed commitment to fight it now that he is in office."

Your lead Mr. President. We all know what you said. What will you do? Live up to your word? Or be known as a liar?
Your lead.

I read that of the 9000 (or is it 8000) earmarks in the bill, 60% were put in by Democrats, and 40% were put in by Republicans. Since the ratio of Democrats to Republicans in the House and Senate is roughly 60/40, doesn't that mean that Boehners Republicans are just as responsible for the spending? I'm just wondering....

harsh spending cuts during a deep recession. Why not? Sure it was a disaster in the 30's and mainstream economists agree it is a stupid idea, but what a great slogan for 2010! It'll play even better than when they lambasted Clinton's attempt to kill that Bin Laden guy as "Monica Missiles" - boy, that was a great soundbite and made sure Clinton never tried that again.

What an Ass.

How long before the Obama appologists show up bashing this guy because he is a republican and said something logical. Cue the hatred.

Brant:"Your lead Mr. President. We all know what you said. What will you do? Live up to your word? Or be known as a liar?"

He'll only be known as a liar by the 30% of hardcore Republicans who thought Bush was doing a good job and interpret monitoring active volcanos near major US population centers and common flightpaths as wasteful spending. I don't think he's too worried by your disingenuous threat to hate and not respect him even more.

Dave:"How long before the Obama appologists show up bashing this guy because he is a republican and said something logical. "

Based on the historical record and well documented economic opinions everyone just hashed out during the long month of stimulus debate - how is drastically cutting government spending logical? They are just trying to get a redo on the stimulus, gutting normal budget funding to ensure the stimulus fails.

That is the logical intrepretation. Perhaps you can explain the logic of passing a Keynsian stimulus one month and then the next month gutting the budget. Please, what is the logic in that other than petulantly trying to undo the stimulus passed by a supermajority of representatives?

Grandstanding at its finest . I also did the math and yes the GOP had its hand in this bill. They want to act like they don't participate in the pork but they surely do and then scream "pork" when it will get them on TV. I hope we can someday look back on this and see how really silly this has become. I say go forward bite the bullet and take no crap from the right. If we are wrong at least we were not whining and bitching about tax cuts.

It is probably worthless to respond to you types...but it's worth a try.

Where in my post did you find anything that suggested I "hated" the President?

The President said what he said. The Bill is full of what it is. Why the accusations of any discussion against it being hateful?

Posted by: Brant | Mar 6, 2009 10:45:54 AM

Now they listen to Ron Paul, but it is too late. The republicans had their chance. Now we go down in an orgy of spending.

Time to get rid of the liberal socialist idiot Obama. Impeach Obama now.

Another thing. Is it possible, in your mind, to be a conservative that voted for Obama? Based on what he campaigned on of course to convince us he was better to handle the economy.

Can 52% of the voting populus consist of conservatives?

Based on the historical record and well documented economic opinions everyone just hashed out during the long month of stimulus debate -

Does anyone remember when this happened?

Not me.

What I remember ... Pelosi, Frank and the Democrats -- "We Won" -- deciding what would be in the stimulus without including the other party. They voted in the house and got it passed because they didn't need ANY and I repeat ANY support from Republicans. Then they passed a bigger document page wise in the Senate that no one READ and the last "yea" vote came from a guy they had to fly back in from his mother's wake and who also hadn't read it ....

Is this what you think passes for debate?

Please.

this is coming from the party that got us into this mess! Ignore any and all republicans!

Brant:"The President said what he said. The Bill is full of what it is. Why the accusations of any discussion against it being hateful?"

For reference, you said:
"Your lead Mr. President. We all know what you said. What will you do? Live up to your word? Or be known as a liar?
Your lead."

You inferred that he was breaking his promise. Yet you don't cite his promise in HIS WORDS, preferring to infer use a common negative formulation (we know what you said/did). Then you proceed to aggressively challenge him, are you a liar or not, after setting up this negative allusion.

Propaganda isn't that hard to spot. You're a natural at it. Discussion about Obama's policy positions are NOT at all hateful. The underhanded attack you made followed with your disingenuous "what did I do?" wide-eyed innocent look is. Feel free to post Obama's promise IN HIS OWN WORDS, not a headline from a talking head, if you honestly believe your comment was not clearly a negative attack.

this is coming from the party that got us into this mess! Ignore any and all republicans!

I know that you weren't paying attention until The One was running for office, but here's a newsflash .... the Dems were in control of the congress for the past two years ... so the republicans were not the only ones who got us into this mess .... just an FYI for you there snooks.

The GOP Taliban just isn't going to be happy until this country is in cinders. They are doing everything within their power to destroy us. I think Wall Street would be doing better if it wasn't for the negativism of the GOP and its efforts to undermine Obama at every turn.
It amazes me that their prescription for recovery is to do "NOTHING". The same mentality they used to drive the bus into the economic ditch. Inside ever Republican is a little Hoover waiting to get out and start a depression.

Posted by: J Johnson | Mar 6, 2009 10:57:37 AM

Someone please tell me that the Republicans don't honestly believe what they're spouting off about. This is analogous to curing someone's snoring problem by strangling them to death.
At this point, the arguements about "wasteful spending" are entirely moot. We are all to blame for what we're dealing with, and the only way out is by putting money into the system in the hope of kick-starting spending and credit flow. Is it a perfect solution? Hardly, and it scares me to think of it not working, which is possible, I grant. However, grandstanding and obstructing just to score political points and playing a cynical strategy in this climate is deplorable. And attempting to place this at Obama's feet when he's been in office less than two months is ridiculous.
Until the Republicans get some ideas and real leadership, until they actually do want to solve problems rather than getting back power they ably squandered, they will be doomed to minority status for years to come, as people want to feel that the government is trying to do something rather than doing nothing at all.

beebop:"What I remember ... Pelosi, Frank and the Democrats -- "We Won" -- deciding what would be in the stimulus without including the other party."

FACT: The stimulus includes admendements WRITTEN BY REPUBLICANS.

FACT: Birth control funding was pulled at the explict request of Republicans.

FACT: The national mall renovation was pulled at the explicit request of Republicans.

FACT: Aid to states was cut to make way for a Republican-championed $70 billion Alternative Minimum Tax cut (benefiting primarily those making over $60k-$200k a year) - that's almost 10% of the bill's total cost.

FACT: Beebop's memory has ZERO credibility when hysterically ranting Republicans were not included.

stealth:"Someone please tell me that the Republicans don't honestly believe what they're spouting off about. "

The fact that on average each Republican representative put in the same amount of money in earmarks is pretty good proof that this is just sloganeering for the next election.
