New Kennedy Book: Caroline's Kids Nixed Senate Bid
May 05, 2009 11:10 AM
ABC News' David Chalian Reports: It appears the ailing Sen. Ted Kennedy's vision of his niece Caroline to carry the Kennedy family banner forward in the Senate for another generation may have been thwarted by Ms. Kennedy's children according to a published excerpt of a new book about Sen. Kennedy's life.
The public and messy courtship of Caroline Kennedy by Gov. David Paterson (D-NY) to replace Hillary Clinton in the United States Senate came to a screeching halt in January when Ms. Kennedy removed herself from contention citing "personal reasons."
In an excerpt of his new book entitled, "Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died," that has been published in the current issue of Vanity Fair, author Edward Klein writes that Caroline Kennedy's three children -- Rose, Tatiana, and Jack -- were the instrumental force that caused their mother to take her name out of the running for the New York Senate seat and to choose not to follow in her father and uncles' footsteps.
The Kennedy children “felt that she was becoming a different person -- one that they didn’t much like,” writes Klein. Rose, the eldest, said to her mother, “‘Mom, you are above this,’” according to Klein's account. Klein writes that a Kennedy friend said it “was a wake-up call. It jerked Caroline back to reality.”
The whole notion of who is poised to succeed Ted Kennedy as the leader of the famed Kennedy family is explored in Klein's new book. The author reports that a Kennedy family friend described a hospital room scene in the aftermath of Sen. Kennedy's seizure last year thusly: “The elephant in the room was the notion of succession. . . The question was: Who was in line to take over for Ted, not just, or necessarily, in his Senate seat but as head of the family?”
Mr. Klein reports that Caroline Kennedy expected an easier path to the New York Senate seat once making her intentions clear. But it was the botched handling of the process by Gov. Paterson and the rough and tumble of New York politics that apparently was cause for alarm for her kids.
A family adviser tells Klein that "Caroline was stunned" by her kids' reaction. But according to the adviser, her children “told her that if she was getting this worked up just getting the job, they didn’t want to see what she would be like in the trenches of a political campaign or a fight in Washington. . . It was Caroline’s conversation with her children that tipped the balance.”
At the time, Gov. Paterson and his aides attempted to attribute Ms. Kennedy's withdrawal from the senate selection process to possible vetting issues such as nanny and tax problems. But Ms. Kennedy and her allies continued to assert that her decision was for personal reasons.

Well Caroline gave up her senate pursuit for the right reason if she felt her children will not receive her devotion. I always felt she was too nice to be in the senate and not ready to watch her back in Washington. She also got a good sense of the people who she thought were her friends. On the whole it has ended well for her and she has lived for another day in the future to think for running again. In the mean time she can continue to do the good she has become used to doing without the shackles of political obligations and responsibilities. As well as continue to bear the torch of the Kennedy legacy.

The whole fiasco was hilarious. "I am ready to be appointed to the Senate." It's like coming out and saying you are ready to win the Miss USA competition.

It was obvious to all that she was banking on the Kennedy name, connections and money to win her the seat.

Aren't her children grown? Why would they want to interfere with what their mother might aspire to? I should think that her children might be more concerned about the media's "raking across the coals" that was certain to happen. John Jr. even said once that he thought that if his father were alive today and considering entering into politics for the first time he probably would not have done it.

The truth is her famous "ya'know" interview revealed she was poorly qualified. I'd cover that up too!

it speaks volumes about the sad state of affairs this nation is in when the know-it-all's post their know nothing, judgmental comments here. contrary to their beliefs, there is a difference between taking a stance and taking a single-minded, closed-end approach. BUT you can't begin to tell or convince them of that because of their know-it-all, hot-airbag ways.
Good for Caroline for doing the right thing.

She was smeared by Patterson.

Her daughter cared about her. Good for her! Now if she would just switch over to the Republican side, she would be MUCH happier. Her father was NOT today's democrat, by any means. He must be turning over in his grave, seeing what the democrats are like now. Sad.

Like past-era Republicans, who were moderate and reasonable individuals for the most part, aren't turning over in their graves at what extremists modern Republicans have become and how that's caused their party to lose any semblance of political control? I daresay Kennedy-era Democrats, who championed regular working people, equal rights, and improvement for disadvantaged groups, would have been damn proud of modern Dems. We haven't changed that much at all. Rpublicans most assuredly have.

Caroline Kennedy is too sensitive to be involved in the day to day dirty politics business. She has a pure and noble soul. Our effort now should be to clean the political mine field and get rid of it, and ensure that no dirty and unqualified joker ever enters politics through any political party and destroy the fabric of the society

Caroline Kennedy knows who she is: she's her mother's daughter and a first class act, all the way. Citizenship and service are her pillars; her family is her foundation. My hat is off to this fine woman.

It is nice to have this extra insight. But let's not forget that she was under qualified, poor speaker, and was out of touch with real issues that real folks face. This country has suffered enough. We don't need any more political dynasties.

really, now! that's all we need is another polician, living an unfaithful lifestyle - so it goes with the kennedy clan! jack kennedy did the same as did his father and brother, bobby! we have enough scandals going on in washington as it is. 'where have all the good 'ol boys gone? Lord, help us all!'

america - what happened that we would end up as we are! one answer: the demos!

Linda, Caroline Kennedy's elder daughter is nearly 21, but the other two children are still in their teens.
As for this story, I do think it represents "spin." The children might not have been enthusiastic, their privacy would have been violated, and I'll say for Ms. Kennedy that she has kept them out of the limelight. However, it became amply clear that she simply wasn't qualified for the job and that too many people were not applauding the prospect of her appointment. I think she withdrew her name because she was intelligent enough to realize that. She doesn't need to claim, now, that she did it for her children's sake. Better simply to exercise some discretion and move on.

Come on people! She would have been the same old business as usual person only grabbing more for herself because of her name. Please put / vote in new people and vote out the lifers and alike!!!!

The Kennedy's are pure muck.

We have no idea what this woman is all about. She has been as her mother was; a private figure. I'd like to know why everyone thinks that if your last name is Kennedy, you're going to be good in politics.
