Rumsfeld's Biblical Message-Laden Intelligence Briefs

May 17, 2009 8:00 AM

ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld prepared top-secret military intelligence briefs for former President George W. Bush with cover sheets featuring triumphant images from the Iraq war with "Crusades-like" Bible messages, according to an exclusive report in the latest June issue of GQ magazine.

The briefs, known as the Worldwide Intelligence Update, were prepared by Rumsfeld and often hand-delivered to Bush, and only circulated among a handful of Pentagon leaders and the president, according to GQ's Robert Draper.

A March 31, 2003 brief cover-sheet depicted a U.S. tank roaring through the desert with a biblical quote from Ephesians: "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand."

An April 7, 2003 cover sheet depicted an image of Saddam Hussein under a quote from the First Epistle of Peter: "It is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men."

An April 10, 2003 brief showed the statue of Saddam Hussein being pulled down, an Iraqi child kissing an American soldier and jubilant Iraqi crowds with a quote from the book of Psalms: "Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him … To deliver their soul from death."

At least one Muslim analyst in the Pentagon had been offended, GQ reports, and others worried that the biblical passages would inspire Islamic outrage within Muslim nations.

The cover sheets were the "brainchild" of Major General Glen Shaffer, a director for intelligence for Rumsfeld and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who reportedly told those who complained about the cover pages that "my seniors" appreciated them, including Bush, Rumsfeld, and former Joint Chiefs chairman Richard Myers.

GQ obtained the sheets from an unnamed government official who "was disturbed enough by these biblically seasoned sheets to hold on to copies," Draper reports.

Major General Glen Shaffer should be Court Martialed for violating his oath to uphold & defend the Constitution of the United States. Specifically, for violating his oath to uphold & defend Article VI and Amendment 1.

Like, the old dude was quoting from the Bible! OMG! Like, it's so weird or something!

As suspected, we lived under a theocracy under Bush that was intent on a holy war in the middle east.

Which is worse?:

Osama bin Laden kills approximately 4,000 Americans and causes hundreds of MILLIONS of dollars in damage in the name of 'God' and subsequently UNITES all Americans..

or

Bush sends 5,000 young Americans to their deaths in Iraq, of all places, and has spent hundred of BILLIONS of dollars and subsequently DIVIDES all Americans.. Oh, and also in the name of 'God'

"that is what God said not me!!" --no, that is what a bunch of Jews said thousands of years ago when they didn't know any better..

If he payed more attention to facts than folklore, then we might not be in this mess.

Lots of verses address the separation of church and state. A little scripture from the KJV Bible.
Mathew 24
Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

Rumsfeld forgot "Thou shall not kill"

I'm disturbed that military intelligence reports have a biblical theme. I don't want biblically driven military policy. That's just dumb. For those who can't handle the separation of church and state, imagine that someone with a different interpretation of the Bible, one who strictly relied on the teachings of Jesus came into the position and started advocating "Turn the other cheek" as the theme after an event like 9-11. I don't want someone justifying their decisions with the Bible, I want them justifying their decisions based on the cold, hard facts. Putting Bible quotes on a report just smacks of vanity and ego, if not the downright delusional belief that God must be on your side.

But what bothers me even more at an intellectual level is this sense of marketing strategy that lies behind these reports. What on earth do they need slogans for or graphics (beyond the normal graphs and charts)? Are not the officials of our government grown up and intellectually developed enough to make decisions without all the stupid bells and whistles you'd find on, say, an issue of GQ? Good lord. This just seems like a bubble-headed waste of time and money and the work of people who can't defend their thesis with a logical argument. My god, if I turned in my college thesis with a graphic and a biblical slogan unrelated to the material on the front, I would have been laughed out of my seminar. These are intelligence reports not marketing brochures. Hopefully with the change of administration we have some grownups in office who don't need pretty pictures to help them digest potentially dry information.

WorldClaZZ, it isn't weird - it's worse. It's completely irrelevant. It's like if I, as a fan of 19th century literature, quoted Charlotte Bronte on the front of a report. Or if a philosophy fan quoted from Stoic beliefs. Totally irrelevant to the facts, no matter that many people live by the Bible's teachings. This is military intelligence. It should be evaluated independently of one's underlying beliefs based on fact. It's about promoting America's welfare for the long run and using its resources wisely, not glorifying a personal ethos.

Where is Donald Rumsfeld? Has anyone seen him since he was suddenly removed?

Is it because this person is not presentable? Is it because Rumsfeld's mental condition has devolved into obvious dementia or paranoia?

God, schmod...what about accountability? But I'll guess the only focus here is who gets to sit with God on a golden pedistal. Let the others take care of themselves, hm?

I guess I never am ceased to be amazed at how oblivious top Bush administration officials were to how America was viewed or would be viewed by incidents such as thes. If nothing else it portrays arrogance....and that is a trait that seems to permeate Republicans....and until they rid themselves of it will keep them from gaining power anytime soon.

The Bush Administration was a cult in itself. Try and go back and listen to some of Bush's speeches in the run-up to the war in Iraq. Very doomsdayish. Bush and friends were no more in touch with reality than the conspiracy theorists who spend their lives trying to find a link between the 9/11 hijackers and the US government.

And ABC doesn't like it!

Posted by: LongT | May 17, 2009 10:57:19 AM

Amen! It is only godly men that will save this country. Rock on.

What we've know all along: God did it.

(Behold, the GOP is diminishing)

So not only did the Bush administration squander America's economic might, they also undermined its moral authority by turing a war into an idiotic schoolboy crusade.

If you have a billion dollar defense industry, and heavy unemployment for unskilled labor, it is a recipe for attack on another nation. Iraq now has their Pearl Harbor. If no one attacks you, you can attack them under the flag of the holy cross. Our tax dollars flood the world with rifles, ammunition, and grenade launchers. We are sinners, and we will run out of warriors before the enemy does. We are weak, and fear complete victory and enslavement.

Bush's war equaled Profits for corporations. And a huge debt to it's citizens. Thousand of innocent men and women have died for their gain. They made another war, In the name of God, Bush , Rumsfeld, Cheney and the rest of the administration should be tried for treason.
