Cheney Backs Gay Marriage
June 01, 2009 3:33 PM
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports:
Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s media blitz continued today -- this time with Cheney placing himself to the left of President Obama on a key social issue.
Appearing at the National Press Club, Cheney answered a question about gay marriage by coming out in favor.
“I think that freedom means freedom for everyone,” Cheney said, The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein reports. “As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish.”
Cheney stated his position in a roughly similar way during the 2004 campaign, though he couched his position by pointing out that President Bush made administration policy -- and he favored a constitutional ban on gay marriage.
But the issue has gained new currency in recent months, as state after state moves to legalize gay marriage. Some prominent Democrats -- including former President Bill Clinton, who said last week that his view on gay marriage is “evolving” -- are moving away from their opposition to gay marriage.
President Obama remains personally opposed to gay marriage.

Who cares what Cheney thinks? This evil person needs to fade away.

This is Major. One by one they will all come around. Its time to be on the right side of History!

I like Cheney but do you seriously think he would be for this if one of his own wasn't gay? I don't think so!
Posted by: Robert | Jun 1, 2009 4:09:11 PM
Robert: I agree. If he didn't have a gay daughter he very well might be against gay marriage. That is a pattern we see over and over with conservatives. If they have a gay child or gay sibling, it completely changes how they view gay issues and how they think gays should be treated. Gays aren't the immoral, unpleasant, subhuman monsters who deserve to be treated like second-class citizens. They're just people trying to make their way in the world like everyone else.

Robert that's a silly comment. How does anyone form an opinion. I think Cheney is very American and not very LOVE THE WORLD. Probably as a result of his close attachment to the global realities that only a high up gov official is held responsible for. I commend him for having the stuff to stand up for a non cookie cutter GOP view. "All that we are is a result of what we have thought." - Buddha

Yeah, Robert. Seeing the positives (people who love other people, happy families) and the negatives (discrimination, being condemned, and pain) up close and personal can change people's minds. It is one thing to rail about people you don't know, but to tell your own son or daughter that you think they deserve for their love to cause them pain? Only a cruel, selfish parent would do that.

Cheney was against gay marriage before he was for it. I wonder what his stand will be tomorrow and will the other GOP spokesperson, Limbaugh, allow his statement to stand?

He was against gay marriage before he was for it?????? You people are way to funny...and Obama has always been against gay marriage, so what.....

Cheney is only playing Political games!

Robert, I echo your comments.

If he had a son who wanted to have two wives would he be in favor of that too?
Posted by: Gary | Jun 1, 2009 4:56:33 PM
If freedom is for everyone, then, why hate crime laws that seek to make it a criminal offense to criticize homosexuality? Apparently, Cheney wants freedom for homosexuals and liberals, but not for his fellow conservatives, which makes absolutely no sense at all!!!!!

As for Cheney I don't care. He has a right to his view. As for Gay " Marriage" I say NO! Marriage has and always MUST be between a man and a woman! If they want a union of some sort so be it. But a marriage is between two individuals that naturally can produce offspring. If for some reason the man and woman cannot have children due to reason not of their doing then they still can call it marriage. Those that choose to have a union or a legal partnership of some sort can do so if they must. They can set this agreement up in any manner they so deem. The need to call it a marriage is not needed. The agreement they have can and should have all the same wording as a marriage other than calling it a natural marriage. IT IS NOT! Those that want this change are not doing it for any other reason other than spite! Have your unions, Have your partnerships, or what ever But leave marriage out of it. It is not the same thing.

No! to gay marraige and lifestyle.

Gary If he had a son who wanted to have two wives would he be in favor of that too? .......and if he did that would be called supporting your children no matter what....last time I looked that was a favorable quality in a parent, some of you should try it. You guys would trash Cheney either way anyway.
Posted by: Boxcar | Jun 1, 2009 5:11:02 PM
P, In that case all marriarges that do not produce offspring should be banned. Any sterile or elderly couples should also be denied the right to Marry. You can't have it both ways. Either everyone should be allowed to get married, or no one should. Seperate but 'equal' doesn't seem to work very well, ie different water fountains, sitting at the back of the bus, not being able to vote, etc etc. Besides what religion tells you, state 1 reason as to why gay people shouldn't have the same right to be married. They're human too, right? Do they not bleed? Do they not weep? Gay people are just like everyone else and deserve the same rights and protections.

Well...it's a little late for him to do something about it seeing as he had eight years as VP to make this an issue. And denn...it's not a criminal offense to criticize homosexuality. Anyone can criticize anyone or thing they want to within reason. It is criminal to attack someone based on protected classes such as race, sexual orientation, etc. And yes that applies to all. If someone is attacked because they are white, or straight that can, and has been, prosecuted as a hate crime.

every one is entitled to equal protection under the laws of the United States. Marriage is one of those rights.

This must have both sides scratching their....uhhh....heads. The Cheney haters and the Cheney lovers....neither will know how to respond. Gotta love it!
