Congressional Republicans Blast ABC; ABC Fires Back
June 23, 2009 4:22 PM
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: A group of several dozen Republican House members has sent a letter blasting ABC News about its plans to televise a health care forum from the White House -- and the president of ABC News fired back today.
The letter to ABC News, signed by 40 members of the newly formed “Media Fairness Caucus,” accuses ABC of “providing in-kind free advertising for President Obama.”
“The manner in which the news programming is being presented -- at the White House with the President and First Lady and without opposition -- is unprofessional and contrary to the journalistic code of ethics to present the news fairly and independently,” the members of Congress wrote to ABC News President David Westin. “This is not a Presidential news conference open to all news outlets. This is an exclusive arrangement from which the President and his viewpoint stand to gain. It’s as if ABC News is providing in-kind free advertising for President Obama.”
The letter asks that ABC “present both sides and offer the opportunity for rebuttal.”
Westin wrote back to the members of Congress, promising a “thoughtful, respectful, and probing discussion of some of the issues raised by the calls for health-care reform.”
“We will include a variety of perspectives coming from private individuals asking the President questions and taking issue with him, as they see fit,” he wrote.
“Sadly, some inside government and within the private sector see every issue as material for a sort of political high theatre, to be used to gain votes or energize political bases or simply to raise funds. I would have thought that a subject as important as the health care received by the American people would rise above this sorry spectacle. Our citizens need and deserve more. We are proud to be making a serious effort to go beyond mere punditry or stylized, bipolar debate; we are proud to work for a network and a company willing to devote valuable airtime to serious consideration of a subject so worthy,” Westin wrote.
You can read the full letter from the members of the Media Fairness Caucus HERE.
And you can read David Westin’s reply HERE.
Also today, the Republican National Committee is launching a new national cable ad attacking “a national TV network” for ‘turn[ing] its airwaves over to President Obama's pitch for government-run health care.”
Watch that ad HERE.

Republicans really don't mind "coming off" as TRITE LITTLE PEOPLE!!! (Whatever happened to Honor, Integrity and Self Respect?)

I always respected ABC and not so much the other 2 joke networks NBC and CBS...but I am greatly disturbed by the networks decision to be a cheerleader for a controversial policy proposal without providing pros and cons...the alarming thing is ABC doesn't recognize how this compromises fairness in reporting which a fundamental of good journalism

Can everybody watch it first - then post their opinions and comments? Just a thought...

Wonder how many complaints those Congressional Republicans have written to Fox News so far.
Posted by: teddymaniac | Jun 23, 2009 4:46:35 PM
Connie,
Why watch it? We already know what the slant is. The agenda has already been agreed to. Even now they're rehearsing their lines and practicing their ad libbed responses.

republicans are forever complaining - they have no new or even old ideas - they lost Why would anyone even listen to the party of bush, cheney, rumsfield, palin, mccain, boher cantor graham etc. all proven liars - the party is full of them. time to disband party - and form a new party - the above have destroyed the party of lincoln.

Groucho - Become a better informed person. Watch it then give me your most valuable opinion. Dont' tell me about slants and agendas if you don't know

Since a Republican filibuster wouldn't be legally acceptable as a tactic to disrupt the Healthcare Forum. The Republican party may want to consider just sending their Leadership in to "Throw A Tantrum" to disrupt the forum!!!

what a joke ABC is. Private individuals as they see fit? yeah - and they wont be picked and coached like Huff Post today was by the Obama administration? Or maybe the private individuals are all leftists pre-screened to the Presidents liking or ease of questioning.
ABC's reply was a smoke screen and so obviously showing its bias you can do nothing but laugh at this travesty

This decision is a major example. They have become so BIASED in their News Room that it is no longer a News Room.
They have definately become the Government Media!!

Please tell me 1 primetime news organization (except FOX) that doesn't fall all over themselves for Obama? Can't think of one? All I ask for is balance. Obama has never been asked a hard question from the media in his life and it won't start here either, sorry! He's doing the ONLY thing he knows how to do...be a public organizer.. that and spend other peoples money... that he doesn't even have yet.

Thank you ABC for not caving to the bullying tactics of the neoconservatives that almost destroyed this country. It is important that people get an understanding of the important issues facing healthcare reform and I am proud of you for having the integrity to air them. The republicans want to continue ruling people through fear and innuendo. Way to go!!!

So what? Who's watching ABC anyway? Why all the fuss? The people who believe the Obama tripe are about the only ones who'll be viewing. If that small group chooses to watch then they'll be off the streets and leaving the rest of us alone.

Seriously -Doesn't this sound like an info mercial for Obamacare?
Posted by: jacknyc | Jun 23, 2009 5:25:33 PM
They didn't vet him during the campaign, they won't admit they have lost their integrity...all they want is for Barak Hussein Obama to succeed at everything "he" wants. So much for Freedom of the Press. So much for the Constitution. So much for putting Country ahead of self. Hello Pravda.
Posted by: WhidbeyBoy | Jun 23, 2009 5:26:32 PM
ABC has no business doing an infomercial from the White House. Period. That's not what a REAL news organization does. Of course, they WILL go ahead and do it anyway. I consider ABC News little more than unmitigated propaganda and the network has lost all credibility. Might as well admit it, label it, and move on. ABC is now about as relevant as Chris Matthews and MSNBC. It's a shame. Brinkley must be spinning in his grave.
Posted by: George | Jun 23, 2009 5:26:39 PM
Em, why not actually watch the program and then complain about it if you found it was biased? Seems to me that the bias is actually found in people who complain about a program without even watching it...
Just a thought.

Holly,
Fear and misinformation have been a hallmark of the Obama administration from the get go, and this health care reform is no different. To see a supposedly impartial news outlet so willingly becomes pawns is sad and disheartening. ABC is now a joke. All the anchors should just wear Obama masks as they do the nightly news.
And yes. I would say the same if Fox News or any other news outlet had done the same thing. It's outrageous and ABC deserves every piece of criticism they're getting.

LOL @ Holly
This administration uses fear and innuendo all the time:
PASS THE STIMULUS OR MORE JOB LOSSES
NATIONALIZE GM/CHRYSLER OR MORE JOB LOSSES
Constantly trying to make Americans scared of the future unless we surrender our liberty to them. Screw that.
ABC has exposed itself with this charade. You have to wonder why Fox is the most watched cable news network......

Hey Holly....get a clue.
