GOP Activist Likens Gorilla to Michelle Obama
June 15, 2009 11:03 AM
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports:
A South Carolina Republican activist has learned the perils of social-media sites, with a Facebook posting where he joked that an escaped gorilla was probably related to First Lady Michelle Obama.
The activist, a former state senate candidate named Rusty DePass, responded to news of a gorilla breakout at a local zoo by posting to Facebook on Friday: "I'm sure it's just one of Michelle's ancestors -- probably harmless."
(The entry was deleted -- along with DePass' Facebook page -- over the weekend. But the South Carolina political blog FITSNews.com captured a screen-grab.)
DePass apologized: "I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest," he told a local television station, according to the New York Daily News.
But he added: "The comment was hers, not mine," claiming that the first lady had recently made a remark about humans descending from apes. (It's not clear what he was referring to.)
DePass is a former chairman of the Richland County (S.C.) Republican Party. He was an early supporter of George W. Bush's campaign in 2000, and of Rudolph Giuliani's in 2008.

The ignorance of republicans never ceases to amaze me.
We are lucky to have Michelle Obama as our first lady - she is smart and classy - two things that could never be said about DePass.

Racism is as rampant in the republican party as fat white men with martinis. And this is why the republican party will not win the Whitehouse for a very long, long, long, long, long, long time.

Racism is in both parties.....and remember it's not the republicans pulling the race card........hmmm, it's the democrats!

Dude the party I used to be a part of is a bunch of garbage. The dems are useless too, but this racist nonsense is way over the line.

It's a joke. Michelle made the statment not long ago about being decendent from apes so what's the big deal. Anyone sitting for 20 years in Rev Wright's church has to be racist if you continue to support his church. But I guess she is not speaking to the Rev anymore he said "them Jews want let Obama talk to him"

Everyone is so quick to label this man a "racist". IF this remark was based solely on her ethnicity, then yes, this is a disgusting display of hatred. HOWEVER, what if Michelle actually made a remark relating the human ancestor to the gorilla and this man's comment was to truly question her belief in evolution? Then it becomes an attack on her religious beliefs, but by then we would have tagged him a racist and destroyed his family's livelihood.
I am not saying he was wrong or right with his comment. All I am saying is that people are so quick to turn angry due to their own insecurities before fully understanding the entire situation. This happens too many times in today's society.

Francis: Give the exact quote that you attribute to Michelle Obama! You can't because she never said it! Defending this remark against the First Lady shows how ignorant alot of Americans are.

Wow, a Southern Republican who believes in EVOLUTION!?! What is happening to the GOP these days! His comment is not racist as most everyone, excepting certain Republicans, believe humans descended from apes. So what is wrong with saying that Michelle had ape relatives? Or is the left now against evolution also?

The good ol boys and girls and Barack Obama haters need to stop trying to play the innocent role, they show their ignorance every single day.We understand that some of you can't stand the fact of Barack Obama being the POTUS we understand that but please ABC NEWS you are just as bad as the good old boys and girls and obama haters because you keep putting these ignorant stories on the blogs. We all know that most people on here will call Barack and Michelle everything but a child of God.And someone even had a nerve to bring up the old news about staying in REV.Wright's church for 20 years.RIDICULOUS and IGNORANT

MikeC: first of all, Letterman was WAY out of line and should apologize. Now to the GOP. I watched a documentary on HBO a couple months ago that followed the McCain campaign all across the country. Tons of footage and interviews with everyday people at picnics, high school gym rallies, town hall meetings, NASCAR events, parades etc. It struck me about three-quarters of the way through: not one black face in any of the crowds. Not one brown face. Not one Asian face. Only white people. Thousands of them at McCain events. If the GOP does not find a way to reach out, be inclusive, they are dead.

What about all the insults and degredations that the Palin family has had to endure. Isn't it funny that liberals have always thought that it's totally against everything to interject any kind of difference of ideology, they're blind to anyones elses opinion and will denegrate them and make them look foolish for having a belief, but it's just fine to insult a bright energetic conservative female whose views on abortion are different. She obviously loves her children and I think it's just a shame the way the press has treated her.
Obama think it's just fine to let the guys go who cut off Americans heads and give them miranda rights on the battlefield but when it comes to abortion especially late term abortion it's the hell with the baby view, he even introduced a bill that would let a live baby from an abortion die because it might cause trauma to the mother, and he does all of this so callously....
I don't believe there is a more arrogant love himself person on the planet.
By the way David Letterman is not a comedian he is now a political activist and I hope his show fails after what he said about Govenor Palin and her daughter whether he meant the older daughter or not is irrelevant, and Obama should have put a stop to this during the election, how would he feel if this was his wife and children.

Its a joke! So.... sensitive.

MEI: Again cite your source for the Michelle quote! You can't because she never said it! Try looking at reliable news sources before you run off at the mouth and continue showing your total ignorance.

Sorry, but this guy is an idiot. Doesn't he know that Facebook is an open book? This makes me doubt his intelligence. But the worse is the insult and the half-baked apology about "being sorry if anyone was offended. So he's sorry that they are offended, and not for insulting them. This has become the common response for a lot of insulting. As it is, the GOP in South Carolina hit another low mark.

So the GOP's sole platform is racially charged and derogatory shots at anything having to do with the Obamas? Smart move!

At some point in America, we need to stop this stupid name-calling and making fun of people who we don't agree with. Everyone from the politicians, comedians, news commentators and even parents - need to take a step back and stop supporting these haters - for the sake of our kids and the future of the nation. Whether it's Keith Olberman, Dave Letterman, Rusty Depass or others like them. Send them a clear message that this type of behavior is NOT OK - on either side of the political spectrum.

Rusty DePass
You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Your comments about Michelle Obama were reprehensible and offensive on SO MANY LEVELS! It one thing not to accept this new administration and the good they are doing for so many people of all races and backgrounds, but it's another thing to insult a woman who is a ROLE MODEL for millions of people in this country including MYSELF! And your "apology" was not sincere in the least bit and people have already acknowledged that (including the media). Closet racism is still alive and well.
Fortunately, there are people who are in your same AGE category, race and socio-economic status that have EMBRACED this administration and those are the people I admire. CHALLENGE yourself to be a better person!!!!!
Sincerely,
Derek

Hey dems, it's OK to call Sarah Palin "slutty" and you guys defend it as satire? Guess what, the jokes on you now! Take the joke for what it is or you're nothing but a hypocrite! Enjoy eating crow dems; attack this dumb remark at your own peril.
